Editor’s Blog by Carrie-Ann Industry Leaders Magazine has been providing business news and information across various industry sectors from different parts of the world. We have been publishing stories about milestones reached by companies through phenomenal efforts and winning strategies. The general notion is that the larger an organization is, the larger impact it has on the environment due to a high contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. So given that Google is one of the world’s largest corporate organizations, logic would say that the company in general must be harming the environment significantly, right ? Wrong. According to Google’s announcement earlier in September, the search engine giant is actually not just carbon neutral, but in fact beyond carbon neutral. How ? Read on to find out more. Naomi Campbell’s new eco home in Turkey, designed after an Egyption symbol - the Eye of Horus - is absolutely un-missable. All this and more... Regards,

Combat Climate Change with Fake Volcano Talk about taking proactive-ness towards combating climatic change to volcanic levels ! A group of scientists from Universities across the U.K have undertaken a project that involves designing a fake volcano, as an experiment towards developing ways to combat climate change. With the aim of reducing atmospheric temperatures caused by climate change, and to complement conventional measures to reduce carbon emissions, the SPICE (Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering) project will be a unique test of engineering technology that could become a precedent for future

The concept involves the use of a matrix of dual-sided linking tiles that wraps around the exterior of a building. These reversible tiles would have organic photovoltaic cells on one side to collect energy during the day,

10 Must-Ha Leadership is a trait known to many, learnt
by some and perfected by few. There are leaders and managers and supervisors and bosses, among others, who take up the responsibilities of getting things done through others, rather than by others. Many attempt, some learn and a few succeed. Leadership is a trait that is not passed on or inherited, it has to be earned, and on a daily basis.

ave Leadership Traits The concept of leadership has been the basis for much research and a good amount of literature has been published about the same, highlighting and describing the dos and don’ts, traits of good leaders, characteristics of the best leaders, things that make good leaders and the things that make leaders good. In a world where every third person is a self-proclaimed expert on business and leadership, it is important to learn from the very best. 1. “I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people.” M.K. Gandhi
2. “The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say ‘I’.” Peter F. Drucker The most effective leaders in the world seldom use the word ‘I’, they say ‘we’. The best leaders always think in terms of a team and believe in ‘team work’. It is the job of every leader to make the team function and the ones that understand that start thinking along the same lines and are effective. These leaders accept the challenges and work towards making their team efficient; the leader faces the song but gives credit to the team. This creates trust in the team and enables the leader to get the task done. 3. “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” Steve Jobs Leadership and “innovation” have an intrinsic relationship. As the focus of both leadership and innovation is to

There was a time when the strongest person from a group, clan or kingdom used to be their leader. In the present predominantly democratic society, a leader is selected by the people from the people and for the people. It is important for a leader to be ‘concordant’ and ‘approachable’ in order to facilitate an environment of growth and intellect. If an employee cannot approach the leader of the organization, he cannot put forth his demands, suggestions or ideas, thereby, hampering his creative genius and rendering him unsatisfied. A leader that can

it came to disseminating news and he went on to become one of the most successful entrepreneurs of the world and his company ‘News Corporation’, the second largest media conglomerate in the world.
In a research conducted in 2008 (McKinsey research), it was found that more than 70% of the senior executives believed that innovation was going to be one of the three main drivers for growth in the following three years for their companies. 4. “Don’t manage - lead change before you have to.” Jack Welch
5. “I don’t look to jump over 7-foot bars: I look around for 1-foot bars that I can step over.” Warren Buffet It is important for a leader to “be realistic”. Having momentum is necessary but not knowing when to stop can lead to a
Managing is not easy, but it is not the highend of leading an organization. Managing a crisis is important, but if the leader has the ‘foresight’ to see the situation coming, he can easily make decisions beforehand that can avert the crisis and lead to innovative development. Foresight has the power and potential of transforming the business industry and it is important that a leader possess foresight if the organizations is to grow. In absence of foresight, the 22

One who learns from an earlier mistake will never commit it again and reduce the chances of failure in the future. 8. “I have learned silence from the talkative, tolerance from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet strangely, I am ungrateful to these teachers” Kahlil Gibran Learning doesn’t have to be limited to one’s own mistakes and good examples set by others, one can also “learn from the mistakes committed by others” and bad examples set by them. In a competitive market, it is very important to keep a track of one’s rivals, how they perform, what they do and the outcome of their actions. One doesn’t necessarily have to follow their footsteps and do whatever turned out to be good for them, but when it comes to mistakes they make, one has to note them down on the ‘things to avoid’ notice board. 9. “As a leader, I am tough on myself and I raise the standard for everybody; however, I am very caring because I want people to excel at what they are doing so that they can aspire to be me in the future.” Indra Nooyi 24
“ “ Sometimes your best investments are the ones you do not make
A leader should be a “role-model” for the followers. This can be possible only if the leader sets high standards that need hardwork to be matched. This not only makes the leader respectable among his followers but also motivates the followers to work harder towards achieving higher standards of work. 10. “I start with the premise that the function of a leader is to produce more leaders, not more followers.” Ralph Nader One of the best characteristics of a modern leader is that he creates leaders from his followers. “Creating leaders” is not easy and it takes a long time to identify potential in the team member and nurturing it in a positive direction. Assigning tasks and duties to the team member and putting some of them in charge of particular tasks makes them selfreliant and develops their leadership qualities. So, by the time the top level leaders of an organization, such as, CEOs and Directors, retire, they leave behind a legacy and new leaders.

Through their business model, New York based BrightFarms, with their locally-produced, fresher, tastier food, offers to bring all the benefits of a Farmers Market to the Supermarket.
Why do some people prefer farmers markets to supermarkets despite the former offering less volumes of produce often for higher prices? Because, says BrightFarms, an increasing number of urban consumers want better, locally-produced food, not necessarily the cheapest available food.
And while providing better food, BrightFarms also offers an alternative to generating high amounts of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, and avoid traffic congestion.
Given that more consumers are opting for choosing from a larger variety of food, even if available in smaller volumes, especially if this means creating more job opportunities in the immediate localities, BrightFarms offers all this to supermarkets through their finance, development and management business.

To start with, BrightFarms promises higher profits for retailers. Their business module does not require retailers to invest any capital in the business; the only requirement is a contract to buy their produce. And given that they more often than not offer their products at lower wholesale prices than comparable products shipped thousands of miles, coupled with associated supermarkets freeing themselves from inconsistencies due to rising fuel costs, the BrightFarms model is sure to find lots of takers within the retailing community. An obvious advantage is the much smaller amount of shrink because of the significantly longer shelflife of locally produced food, translating directly into higher profits.
E n v i r o n m e n t a l Sustainability In addition to offering a scaled-up urban gardening alternative that promises numerous benefits to supermarkets and their customers, the Brightfarms concept has also been developed with environmental sustainability as one of their primary criteria. According to B r i g h t Fa r m s estimates, when food has to travel long distances – they say that the average item of food in the United States travels at least 1500 miles – the cost of gasoline used for transportation can amount to half the value of the food itself. Basing their business model on the “Zero food miles” concept, BrightFarms’ farming within urban areas removes the need for lengthy transportation.

Also, in contrast to conventional agricultural practices, which produce a lot of greenhouse gas emissions from the use of fossil fuels for heating purposes in winter, BrightFarm greenhouses capture waste heat from the host building, which means that their system uses close to no additional fossil fuel for heating. Similarly, the greenhouses use low energy cooling systems where power for cooling is generated through installed solar panels.
We’d be surprised if this urban farming concept doesn’t take off!
BrightFarms also maximizes the use of increasingly scarce land and water resources by growing their produce in a land area that is 20 times smaller than would be required by conventional agricultural techniques, while the recirculating hydroponic techniques that BrightFarms operate with use up to 10 times less water than conventional field agriculture.

Number Crunchingly Good project that is being built to connect Yakutsk in Russia to Canada’s British Columbia and will offer a highway, high-speed rail tracks, a fiber optic network as well as pipelines for oil and gas.
Project History The idea of a direct rail route and bridge spanning across and linking North America with the EuroAsian region was first conceived more than a century ago in 1905 by Tsar Nicholas II. With technological limitations at the time however, constructing such a mammoth-scale project was not possible. Neither Siberia nor Alaska currently has rail route links that connect the farthest points of their respective territories. The project, recently approved by the Kremlin, has been revived after being shelved earlier
in 2007. The project, reportedly brought to the discussion table by Aleksandr Levinthal, a high-profile Russian politician at a conference that focused on the development of Russia’s northeastern rail infrastructure, will be in the form of a PPP – private public partnership. According to a statement made by Viktor Razbegin in an interview to Russia Today, an official from the Russian Ministry of Economic Development, “The project is already underway… The rail track to Yakutsk that we have been building for the past 15 years has always been seen as the first part of the road. It will be finished in just about a year.” Expressing some concern over political hurdles that yet need to be overcome, Razbegin added “However, the most important is the political decision which hasn’t been taken yet. There are multiple countries involved, and it will be hard.”
While the project looks more real than ever before, it will be a long wait before the entire link starts functioning across its different components. Estimates say that the tunnel alone will require 15 years to be built, while the entire network, including the railway system which needs to be constructed on both sides of the Bering Strait is likely to be completed by 2045. 38

Sany Heavy reportedly aims to raise around $3.3 billion from this offering.
At a time when global stock market trading is witnessing a general low because of the unpredictability of world economies, Sany Heavy’s IPO in the Hong Kong stock market is likely to be Hong Kong’s second-biggest stock offering this year, following Glencore’s $10 billion IPO that took place earlier this year in May through its dual listing in the Hong Kong and London stock exchanges.
Overseas Acquisitions Will Follow IPO Sany Heavy, based in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province in southern China, announced by way of a media statement by Tang Xiuguo, president and co-founder of Sany Group, that the company will actively be looking at expanding sales in India, Brazil, Indonesia, the Middle East and Africa following the IPO. While rival company XCMG Construction Machinery scrapped its plans of undertaking an initial public offering given the low levels that the Hang Seng has been witnessing recently, Sany Heavy will continue with its plans of making a public offering. “Conducting a share sale today can help us expand overseas in a faster, better and smoother way,” Tang said.
Sany is reportedly planning to use about half of the proceeds raised through the IPO towards building new plants and expanding capacity for excavators, crawlers and cranes. Hinting at overseas acquisitions that might be in the pipeline, Tang said in the interview, “We have some opportunities and we are in talks on some businesses, including mergers and acquisitions (and partnerships with) some specialized enterprises, including some family businesses, which have very good professional skills and a certain group of clients.” Established in 1989 as a small welding material factory by founders Liang Wengen, Tang Xiuguo, Mao Zhongwu and Yuan Jinhua, the Sany Group has now grown into a global corporation with five industrial parks in

How ? “The Big Picture” by Google explains being “beyond-zero carbon” by saying that “Our efforts in efficiency, buying clean energy, and purchasing offsets bring our carbon footprint down to zero. We’re going beyond carbon neutral by investing hundreds of millions of dollars in renewable energy projects that create far more renewable energy for the world than we consume as a company.” Google has increasingly been investing in smart energy, green initiatives, with the more recent ones in this area being its $168 million investment in the Ivanpah solar power tower plant followed by $280 million investment towards creating the largest residential solar financing fund in the United States in conjunction with SolarCity. Alongwith having invested in utility-scale projects, built to contribute significant amounts of renewable energy to today’s electricity grid, Google has also invested in early-stage companies such as Makani Power and Potter Drilling, which are working towards developing innovative new technologies to in the wind and geothermal energy sectors respectively. 50

According to figures put forth by Google, the search engine giant had, uptill the end of August, invested more than $780 million in the renewable energy sector towards projects that are capable of generating 1.7 GW of power and electricity, which Google estimates as being equivalent to the amount of energy used by 350,000 homes.
The company has also made public the fact that it has put in place a number of special arrangements to buy electricity from wind farms, as a result of which an estimated 25 percent of Google’s 2010 energy needs were reportedly supplied by renewable fuels. The company estimates that this figure will reach 30 percent in 2011.

Google’s latest investment towards furthering the renewable energy sector is another fund that was set up by the search engine giant in collaboration with Clean Power Finance. Rick Needham, Director of Green Business Operations for Google, announced this new initiative on the 27th of September 2011. Involving an investment of $75 million by Google, this project takes Google’s total investment towards supporting the growth of the clean energy sector to $850 million, and is likely to help up to 3,000 homeowners go solar.

The dawn of
South Africa’s Renewable Energy Industry - by Dr. Chris Haw
Heavily reliant on its abundant coal supply and dominated by Eskom for the past 35 years, the South African electricity supply industry seems set for a shake up. The South African Government has started to shift its focus towards diversifying its energy mix, creating a secure supply of electricity and stimulating the development of a renewable energy industry in order to supplement the country’s rapidly growing energy demands.
The Finite Power of Coal
foreword
South Africa’s abundance of coal deposits, coupled with the perceived cost efficiencies of coal generated electricity and a nationalised monopoly on the generation market, have, until recently, allowed the South African government to offer its consumers significantly low subsidised rates for electricity generated by the energy source. Unsurprisingly, until now, coal has been the preferred means of electricity 64
generation in the country and is currently South Africa’s primary source of base load power, accounting for approximately 90 percent of the country’s total generation capacity. However, poor planning and a rapidly growing economy has left the country in an electricity supply crisis for the past three years, resulting in the government resorting to load shedding initiatives which have dealt a massive blow to the country’s GDP. This, along with a progressive shift in the global mind set to focus on ensuring sustainable energy generation, the Government’s commitment toreducecarbon emissions and manage the risk of carbon fines, as well as the acknowledgement that the country’s low grade coal is now longer sufficient for efficient power generation, has forced the South African government to seek alternative means of electricity production.

foreword
With global trends in environmental awareness placing much pressure on economies to put in place long-term policies on emission reductions, and with the mounting uncertainty of Eskom’s ability to support the country’s growing energy demands, the South African government finally released its 20 year Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) for 2010 to 2030. The IRP2010 places considerable emphasis on the development of renewable and nuclear technologies as the future
As one can see from the table, the first draft of the IRP excludes photovoltaic (PV) technology from its allocations – a major oversight by the energy policy makers as PV is a clean, simple and well established technology in 66
source of sustainable power generation in the country and, if all goes according to plan, coal should only contribute 43 percent to the total electricity generation mix by 2030.

a major role to play in helping establish the industry. He explains: “By providing a conduit through which industry and government can communicate and by keeping each other informed of important developments, we can work together to ensure a successful and sustainable implementation of renewable energy into the country’s supply mix.”
Says Dr. Chris Haw, SAPVIA’s Chairperson: “Our members comprise mainly developers, manufacturers and service providers operating within South Africa’s PV industry and our membership base continues to grow at an impressive rate with membership enquiries coming in on a daily basis.” 67
The current allocations are listed in the table below:

Other benefits SAPVIA members enjoy are networking opportunities; access to industry information and data; notifications of latest industry news and legislative changes that impact the market; access to research papers that would otherwise need to be paid for; participation in meetings and workshops with key stakeholders; as well as discounted rates for certain conferences.
Setting the Ball in Motion
foreword
After much anticipation, the country’s Department of Energy released the eagerly awaited Request for Proposals (RFP) documentationfor its Renewable Energy
Independent Power Producer procurement Programme in August this year, finally setting the renewables bidding process in motion. Says Haw: “Although still firmly in support of a renewable energy feed-in tariff programme over the price-based competitive bidding system which the government has opted for, SAPVIA is pleased the documents have been released and that vital steps are being taken to ensure the renewable energy projects get off the ground timeously.” “Having studied thedocuments and their stringent criteria,” Haw continues,“the association is impressed with the apparent great lengths the government has gone to ensure the procurement programme is a success.”

Growth Profile & Distribution According to the Barcelo Group’s 2010 annual report, the Group saw a net profit of 10.1 million euros (around $13.7 million), as opposed to its 7.6 million euro net profit from the 2009 fiscal year. Of the Group’s 185 hotels, 72 are 5-star hotels, 98 are ranked with 4-stars and 6 with 3 stars. Offering a total of 47,000 rooms, the largest share of the Group’s hotels (81) are located in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, followed by USA (62 hotels) and Latin America and the Caribbean (33 hotels). While the hospitality sector has been witnessing difficulties and a general slowdown globally, which has meant a halt in many of the projects, Barceló Hotels & Resorts ended 2010 with the addition of 5 new hotels: 2 in Cuba (Barceló Habana Ciudad and the second phase of Barceló Cayo Santa María Resort), 1 in Turkey (Barceló Ankara Antinel), 1 in Morocco (Barceló Marina Smir Thalasso Spa) and 1 in Spain (Barceló Corralejo Bay in Fuerteventura). Focusing on quality and the medium-high segment of the hospitality industry, the Reactor Plan (2010-2012) initiated by Barceló 112
Hotels & Resorts in 2010 aims to continue and increase, if possible, the quality of the chain’s hotel supply. With this objective in mind, despite the difficult economic scenario, the Group continued to carry out major renovations of strategic establishments such as Barceló Bávaro Palace Deluxe (in the Dominican Republic), which has ended its third year of renovation work with a total investment that already exceeds 250 million dollars, Barceló Santo Domingo (in the Dominican Republic), Barceló Illetas Albatros (in Majorca), which has become a hotel only for adults after the renovation, and Barceló Sants (in Barcelona), a very important hotel for Barceló Hotels & Resorts since it was the group’s first city hotel (added in 1995) and which set the standard for the chain’s urban tourism.

that, in times of crisis, major opportunities are also created.
In a transition year such as 2010, and after successfully completing the 20052010 Strategic Plan, which enabled our Group to double its portfolio and reposition it completely, from a chain of 3-star hotels to a hotel group with leisure and business establishments exclusively of 4 and 5 stars, the company approved a new plan called “Reactor” which will last for two years (2010 2012).
To carry that out, a number of measures have been adopted in order to, on the one hand, further improve the quality of the Group’s hotels, aimed at consolidating its deluxe offer, and, on the other hand, restructure its accounts, with the aim of attaining the highest possible profitability and the necessary financial strength so that the Group can make the most of the opportunities that may arise. And nearly always, this has occurred just after crisis periods.”
As indicated by its name, the plan is aimed at reacting to the current exceptional situation of the world economy, which our Group cannot avoid, and preparing the Group to tackle the main challenges of the future in terms of the difficulties that may be encountered and to take advantage of the situations that arise since everybody knows 113

Naomi Campbell’s palatial eco-home, with its over two dozen bedrooms and five lounges, is one of the latest to join the rapidly growing list of eco-friendly celebrity island abodes, like Johnny Depp’s solar hydrogen fuel powered home in the Bahamas. The large steel-and-glass dome, the eyeball of the Eye of Horus, is light and transparent, letting in natural light and warmth all year round. The intensity of how much light and warmth filter in is controlled by horizontal louvers, landscaping, and glazed windows. Campbell’s personal Eye of Horus in Turkey has been designed by devising an ingenious system of structuring photovoltaic panels which helps generate a large share of the energy required to run the building. The rest of the energy requirement is met by a highly sophisticated geothermal system and passive design. The design of this eco-mansion also includes a detailed rainwater harvesting system, while wastewater from the home is treated on site with the use of a biological treatment system, further increasing this home’s overall energy efficiency.
