editor’s NOTE
Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and the most successful venture capitalist in Silicon Valley, plans to live to be 120. Dmitry Itskov, the “godfather” of the Russian Internet, says his goal is to live to 10,000; Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, wants to someday “cure death,” and Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle, has called mortality “incomprehensible.” The key thing about mortality is that its approach to a given question always seems, and on all levels, perfectly logical. To take our current example, the argument about AI posing an existential threat to humanity, in most meaningful respects is, quite compelling. If and when we develop human-level artificial intelligence, it’s only a matter of time until this AI gives rise to smart iterations of itself whose intelligence is far superior to our own as our intelligence is currently to that of animal species on the planet. The most logical route, is to end up wiping death itself. This dimension is faintly visible in the techno-millenarianism of the Singularity: a point in the future at which human beings will irrevocably merge with technology, to become uploaded minds, incorporeal beings of pure thought. This particular strain of technological Singularity could be glimpsed in our Cover Story: The Golden Age of Pill Robots. Plunge In!

Stretchable, SelfHealing Smartphone Screen A new breakthrough in “self-healing” materials has scientists looking forward to a future in which smartphone screens and batteries within can repair themselves. Developed by researchers at the University of California Riverside, the new material is made up of a stretchable polymer and an ionic salt, making it capable of conducting electricity and self-heal beyond the daily wear and tear. The regenerative material can stitch itself back together within 24 hours after being torn apart, with its charged ions and polar molecules attracting and aligning to complete the repair. Researchers have modeled off the architecture of the human vascular system that provides efficient and repetitive delivery of healing agents. The beauty of the human vasculature is, we don’t have to probe the cut or scratch and repair it ourselves. The human circulatory system, a 3D micro-vascular network automatically releases skin healing agents into the crack plane to help repair the damage. The polymer chains are connected to each other by the ion-dipole bonds between the polymer polar groups and the ionic salt. As a result, the regenerative material can stretch up to fifty times its original size, which means that the scuffs don’t have to be permanent. “A self-healing material, when carved in two parts, can go back together like nothing has happened, just like human skin,” said Chao Technowize Magazine | may 2017
011
Wang, the Lead researcher behind the creation. Lead researcher Chao Wang believes the stretchable polymer will be used by major smartphone and other consumer products manufacturers by 2020. Presently, the protective cases market accounts for 20.5% share in the global mobile phone accessories market, and is anticipated to expand at a CAGR of 5.9% till the end of 2025. While Gorilla Glass is the screen material of choice for most high-end smartphones right now, it’s extremely prone to shattering on impact. Wang’s self-healing polymeric material may initially cost more than traditional smartphone cases, over a lifetime it can pay for itself with reductions in repair costs. Some smartphones are already fitted with similar technology on their cases, such as the LG G Flex. The regenerating material gives better protection from daily wear and tear than traditional phone UV coating. But Wang’s attempt marks the first instance of a regenerating material that can conduct electricity, meaning it could be used for phone screens.

Fa c e b o o k Live Raises Big Questions
On Easter, 37-year-old Steve Stephens drove around Glenville, Cleveland on what he said was an “Easter Sunday slaughter,” and soon he had garnered an audience of millions for shooting of Robert Godwin Sr., 74 which he had livestreamed on Facebook. In a series of turbulent Facebook posts, Stephen also claimed he had murdered fourteen random strangers. Despite the incident occurring on Sunday, April 16, the public did not hear from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg until Tuesday. When he did, he went with a cursory mention during a speech at Facebook’s annual developer conference. “We have a lot more to do here. And we’re reminded of that this week by the tragedy in Cleveland. And our hearts go out to the family and friends of Robert Godwin Sr. And we have a lot of work and we will keep doing all we can to prevent tragedies like this from happening,” Zuckerberg said. The main issue people have with Facebook’s involvement in this incident is that it took two hours to take down the nefarious footage. The victim’s grandson, Ryan Godwin, begged people to stop sharing the footage writing on Twitter, “That is my grandfather show some respect.”
Technowize Magazine | may 2017
013
Facebook is currently testing out multiple ways to filter out violent material – including AI technology. It is unclear if artificial intelligence played a role in flagging Stephen’s footage. Incidents in which people commit violent crimes and post them on Facebook are growing at an unprecedented frequency. Mental health experts warn livestreams risk desensitizing the public and copycat violence.

There are legions of human Facebook moderators hunting for pornography, gore, sexual solicitation, minors, sexual images, racism, hateful taunts, and brutal violence. Users report the offensive material to Facebook moderators, who then decide whether to remove the content or disable the user’s account. Justin Osofsky, vice president of global operations and media partnerships at Facebook, said the company disabled Stephens’ account within 23 minutes of receiving the first report about a murder video and two hours after receiving a report of any kind. Facebook opened its Live feature to the public last year and has since been pushing its 2 billion users to try out the new feature with advertising campaigns and featuring livestreams in users’ news feeds. It’s harrowing to understand why Facebook was so unprepared for the consequences of the push. Last July, the death of Philando Castila, a Minnesota man fatally shot by the police during a traffic stop in the suburbs of St. Paul, was broadcast by his girlfriend live across Facebook. The video has been labeled as graphic and violent did not capture the shooting itself, however, it remains accessible on Facebook. In January, three men in Sweden were arrested on suspicion of raping a woman and streaming the assault live to a private Facebook group. Sadly, no one called the police. In February, two radio journalist in the Dominican Republic were fatally shot during a Facebook Live broadcast. For now, the company relies on human moderators and artificial intelligence to remove offensive or harmful content. This approach raises quite a few concerns - for instance, last year, a Facebook moderator took down an iconic, Pulitzer Prize-winning photo from the Vietnam War depicting a naked girl running from a napalm strike. Facebook restored the photo after facing criticism. The problem is, Technowize Magazine | may 2017
015
artificial intelligence would inevitably make mistakes. The company would be accused of censorship if the algorithm wrongly deleted photos and videos. This explains why Facebook takes an unreasonable amount of time to determine if it should delete a video. Eventually, though, AI will work alongside human moderators, to effectively identify offensive content.

W at e r O u t o f Desert Air From California to sub-Saharan Africa, we’re facing a global water scarcity. Receiving less than 1cm of rain annually and with water resources under threat, Peru’s capital city Lima has had to get creative at high altitudes where municipal water departments cannot build reservoirs. The Peruvians Without Water movement has built vast nets to trap the thick sea fog and mist that regularly covers hilly landscape of Lima to provide up to 400,000 liters of fresh water to the region. In regions where it doesn’t rain much, nor are there many freshwater sources – a situation even more critical as urban populations expand rapidly – environmental innovators are conquering the crisis, resourcefully, one step at a time. A team of researchers at MIT and the University of California, Berkeley have developed a solar-powered device that can wring water from the desert air. The device works at low power in arid conditions, which means it could help remote desert communities without constant access to drinking water. The new device works like a dehumidifier, .i.e. it turns excess water vapor in the air into liquid water. Instead of using electricity, the water harvester in the device uses heat from the sun and a new material called an MOF (Metallic-organic Framework). The material, MOF has a large surface area and pores that can be customized to capture H2O molecules. The heat from the sun converts the H2O molecules into vapor, allowing them to rise out of MOF’s pores and into the device, which is a clear acrylic enclosure. The cube houses a condenser at the bottom of the vessel, directing the water molecules Technowize Magazine | may 2017

into a chamber below in which drinking water can be stores. In driest parts of the world like the Sahara, the device can pull 2.8 liters of water from the air over a 12 hour span. The solar-powered device could be used to help over 4 billion people globally who suffer from acute water shortage.

What Happens To Your Facebook Account When You Die When a German teenager was killed by a subway train five years ago, her parents grieved – they didn’t know if the 15-year-old from Berlin had deliberately entered the path of the oncoming train. Not so long ago, her mother turned to Facebook, hoping she might get some answers. Unfortunately, she was unable to gain access to her dead daughter’s Facebook account. Her request, as her daughter’s legal heir, turned into a long court battle to understand her daughter’s mysterious death. A Berlin superior court began proceedings to consider if her parents should be permitted to read their daughter’s Facebook messages after her passing. Although, both the parents had their child’s Facebook password, her profile was put into “in memoriam” mode after her death, locking her private Facebook message from being accessed by anyone. In the original 2015 ruling, the judge declared that analog as well as digital possessions of a minor should be treated in the same fashion, in order to avoid a situation in which “letters and diaries were inheritable independent of their content, but emails and Facebook posts were not.” Currently, Facebook offers only three options to address matters Technowize Magazine | may 2017

of a user’s death: a full delete of the deceased user’s account; “Remembering” to make in memoriam posts but permanently block the account from any login; and “Legacy Contact” which is quite similar to the executor of a will, however, as minor cannot choose this option, it would be of no help to the grieving mother. None of the above mentioned options would allow access to the information contained within the deceased daughter’s Facebook account. Observations concerning Facebook’s compliance with CIA, NSA and FBI requests for access to private data in cases of criminal behavior and acts of terrorism point to a double standard with regard to the mother’s request.

Elon Musk’s Neuralink Wants to create Matrix in Real Life Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, is onto his next project: a neural interface connecting the human brain with computer technology. The latest endeavor – Neuralink – is four years away from launching its first product to the market. The Neuralink device would initially focus on people with severe brain injuries. “The first use of the technology will be to repair brain injuries as a result of stroke or cutting out a cancer lesion, where somebody’s fundamentally lost a certain cognitive element,” said Musk. “It could help with people who are quadriplegics or paraplegics by providing a neural shunt from the motor cortex down to where the muscles are activated.” Elon Musk isn’t the only Silicon Valley tech-entrepreneur working on an implantable brain-computer interface. Braintree CEO Bryan John has invested $100 million on Kernel, a company that aims to combine the human brain and machine intelligence. At the F8 Developer Conference, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that it is working on a similar interface. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Californiaheadquartered Neuralink is a medical research company. The launch of its first product would depend heavily on regulatory approval timing and how well the device works on people with disabilities. The device seeks to create micro-implants of the neural interfaces augmenting the brain with computer assistance.

Meet The Real-Life Cyborgs Moon Ribas is the most human-like cyborg you’ll meet. Unlike the extreme “grinders”, the 30-year-old Spanish artist’s biohack is quite unique. Ribas has a minuscule magnet near her elbow that allows her to feel earthquakes anywhere on planet, in real time. “After perceiving this universal movement, and after this motion became an emotion, this is when I felt cyborg. It’s when I felt that my body and cybernetics had united,” Ribas tells the TEDxMünchen audience. Like her long-term friend Neil Harbisson, who has a color-sensing antenna attached to his skull, Ribas says the physical change is not the purpose of being a cyborg. Haribsson changed his body, to adjust his psyche, says Ribas. She deciphers the tremors she feels in body into dance movements. But, why the need to turn into a cyborg? “I want to perceive movement in a deeper way,” explains Ribas, a choreographer who studied dance at Dartington College in the UK. “The planet moves, constantly shaking and moving every day. I thought it would be amazing to translate the massive and natural movements of the planet in a different way.” Ribas’ subdermal implant perceives information from an accompanying iPhone app that collects seismic movement from geological monitors the world over. City plans should have a deeper understanding of the science of earthquakes, and large cities should not be built over active tectonic planet. To hone her seismic sense, Ribas is thinking about getting implants on her feet so she could distinguish where tremors happen on the planet. Ribas and Harbisson are hoping to team up with architects and technologists to enhance their cyborg-like implants.

World’s First Cyborg Artist Neil Harbisson is the world’s first cyborg artists. He wear a prosthetic device, an “eyeborg” that allows him to hear the spectrum, even the colors beyond the range of human sight. The eyeborg was updated, which means his skull is presently Bluetooth-enabled. He can either connect with gadgets that are close by, or connect with the internet. As a matter of fact, he can connect to anywhere in the world. He believes we people have a duty to use innovation to rise above our senses. Becoming a cyborg isn’t a life decision, it’s an artistic statement, more about treating our body and brain as a sculpture. Harbisson’s unique “eyeborg” – developed 10 years back by Plymouth University cybernetics expert Adam Montandon – meant he had to wear earphones connected to a laptop all the time. Ensuing operations enabled him to ditch this, as a vibrating chip was set first against, then inside his skull. Simultaneously, he turned into the world’s first cyborg artist. Harbisson is quite serious about being viewed as a cyborg artist. He had to fight with the UK Passport Authority, which at first opposed his point of having a travel permit picture of him with the antenna. He contended that it was not a piece of technology but rather some portion of his body, and they in the

The antenna additionally enables him to perceive hues past the normal human range: he can hear infrared and ultraviolet. For him, red isn’t the color of passion, it’s a serene color. Violet however, is a savage to the ears.

Dr. Kevin Warwick, a professor of cybernetics at Reading University, made headlines when the university claimed a chip implanted into his nervous system passed the 65-year old Turing Test. In 1998, Warwick become the world’s first cyborg. He had a radio frequency ID implanted in his arm, and as a result he can turn on light by snapping his fingers. Dr. Warwick is certain that humans will fall behind if won’t advance with the robots, and rather keep building them. He doesn’t want to be a robot, rather a better human. Augmenting our abilities, is the basis of the “cyborg”. As a matter of fact, one of the earliest uses of the term was by scientists Nathan S. Kline and Manfred E. Clynes in 1960, when describing their idea of an enhanced human being who could survive in the harshest of alien environments. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, “A cyborg is essentially a man-machine system in which the control mechanisms of the human portion are modified externally by drugs or regulatory devices so that the being can live in an environment different from the normal one.” Does this make Warwick the world’s first cyborg? What about the era of cyborgs? May be, we might start really simple, like having a third ear in our hands. Or a small vibrator embed into our heads to detect if there’s someone behind us.

Pill Robots Marc Stiegler’s 1989 short story “The Gentle Seduction” maintains the idea of technological Singularity in a rate-ofchange sense, with one of the characters superimposing the idea as “a time in the future. It’ll occur when the rate of change of technology is very great - so great that the effort to keep up with the change will overwhelm us.” The heroine of the story lives in a timeline where a majority of mankind is more willing to swallow a pill to restore one’s youthful state, or take a pill to boost one’s mental acuity. petrified of technology, she is forced to live a technologically-impaired, forsaken life she doesn’t want. One day, the woman ends up taking a new pill, and transmutes from a techno-neophyte to an organic intelligence. The women stops aging as centuries go by, she no longer needs her physical body and can choose to leave it behind and explore the universe as a type of pure mental-energy state. The ‘seducer’ is the technology itself, as the woman lives through Singularity, and is seduced by its wonder, bit by bit. Stiegler’s interest in a post-Singularity civilization began in 1984 when he coauthored Valentina: Soul in Sapphire to cover the galloping progress of artificial intelligence, genetics and nanotechnology. Now, three decades later, we’re approaching a moment when humanity – our bodies, our minds, our civilization – will be completely and irreversibly transformed by Singularity. It’s impossible to think about accelerating technological development and where it may be taking us, without accepting the idea of Singularity. As it turns out, life-extension advocates, cyborgs, neuroscientists, Silicon Valley tech entrepreneurs and transhumanists, are entirely convinced that merging technology and human beings will turn us into beings of pure and immutable thought. This particular techno-millenarianism of Technowize Magazine | may 2017

Singularity could be noted in Elon Musk’s widely reported recent comments at the World Government Summit in Dubai. In some ways, he insisted, we are already cyborgs. With all the digital tools that we have, our phone, our computer, that we can ask a question and instantly get an answer from Google and other things, we humans, already have a digital tertiary layer. In order to avoid becoming obsolete, we need some sort of merger between biological intelligence and digital intelligence. “It will be some high bandwidth connection to the brain that will help us achieve a symbiosis between our brain and artificial intelligence. After Singularity, the most talkedabout topic is life-extension. Singularitarians see biological boundaries that most people think of as perpetual and inescapable as solvable problems. Aging is an illness. So is death, like any other, intractable illness. What do you do with illnesses? You cure them. After all, Singularity cannot be plotted on the graph without biological evolution. Technowize Magazine | may 2017

Year 2050: Man Becomes Immortal The 1987 movie, Innerspace, the story of pill-size robot equivalent that could travel through a person’s gastrointestinal tract, was pure science fiction. Thirteen years later, in 2000, patients began swallowing the first commercially built pill cameras. The practice, known as capsule endoscopy is now commonly used in medicine. Since 2000, 18 European businesses and research teams have formed a consortium with the Intelligent Microsystem Center to develop capsular robots for cancer detection and treatment. Fantasy, storytelling, imagination, visioning, creativity, science and commercialization has us deploy key new technological developments that will undoubtedly have an influence in the larger world of pill robots. It is well known that one cause of physical degeneration associated with aging involves telomeres, which are segments of DNA occurring at the ends of chromosomes in eukaryotic cells. Each time a cell divides, its telomeres get shorter, and once a cell runs out of telomeres, it can’t reproduce anymore and dies. An enzyme called telomerase is capable of reversing this process, and is one of the reasons why cancer cells live so long. In November, researchers at Harvard Medical School announced in Nature that they had reversed age-related degeneration in mice, resulting in “new growth of the brain and testes, improved fertility, and the return of the lost cognitive

function.” They administered telomerase to a group of mice suffering from age-related degeneration. The lab mice didn’t just get better; they got younger. By raising levels of telomerase in people, we might slow the ageing process. Repeating this in humans is an impossible feat, because it makes the risk of cancer soar. Cancer occurs when mutated cells live longer than they should. If we figure out how to keep the anti-ageing of cancer cells without the dysfunctional mutations that come with them, we could basically never age and live forever. Researchers from Polytechnique Montréal, Université de Montréal and McGill University have developed new nanorobotic pills capable of navigating through the bloodstream to administer a drug with precision by specifically targeting the active cancerous cells of tumors. These robot pills are bred to respond to magnetic signals and can swarm to oxygen-depleted tumor to deliver antiageing drugs. At this stage, the technology is incredibly limited. You cannot rely on a single robot to manipulate all the active cells in the body. Moreover, the leading method of manipulation is using external magnetic fields, as batteries don’t work on such a large scale. Similarly, in experiments involving a simulation of the human esophagus and stomach, researchers at MIT, the University of Sheffield, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology have demonstrated a “tiny origami robot that can unfold itself from a swallowed capsule and, steered by external magnetic fields, crawl across the stomach wall to remove a swallowed button battery or patch a wound.” Technowize Magazine | may 2017
062
The researchers presented last month at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation, in a series of long sequence of papers on origami robots from the research group of Daniela Rus, the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Professor in MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The origami robot pill is steered by applying magnetic fields generated outside the body to remotely control the movement of the capsules. Perhaps, in the future, pill robots could perform biopsies and even more complex therapeutic processes, such as surgical procedures, which would make them an even more powerful medical tool. Critical problems such as power supply, space constraints and limited torque make ambitious therapeutic tasks impossible to achieve. Nanorobotic pills may eventually find wider use throughout the body for a variety of purpose. There are significant gaps today between where pill robots are and the promise of the era of Singularity, when pill robots will be integrated into the journey to immortality and anti-aging, becoming as common as smartphones of today, and often acting as regenerative medicine. It’s all rosy and, of course, a lot of people Singularity is a fantasy, wishful thinking, invented by the outrageous. Take this question: Can a robot pill replicate the biochemical complexity of a living organism? Technowize Magazine | may 2017

Tissue Distension One way to push tissue out of the way—to clear a passage or to gain a view—is to give the robot powerful arms that can push. Artificial Intelligence and Moore’s law Intel co-founder Gordon Moore noted a peculiar trend in the semi-conductors and electronics industry; an outline for the whole the semiconductor industry to advance. The four and a half page article by Gordon Moore in the Electronics Trade journal was the most impactful article ever that led the basic foundation for the silicon based circuitry industry.

Moore’s law, the evolution and the advancement Moore was a Cal Tech PhD, cofounder of Fairchild Semiconductor and head of its research and development laboratory. Fairchild has been

The statement which was initially an observation was labelled as Moore’s law later in 1970 by Caltech professor, VLSI pioneer and entrepreneur Carver Mead. The phrase then was caught by the electronics Industry as a core principle.
many versions of the Moore’s law for other capabilities of digital electronics. Processing speed, RAM’s, sensor strength, pixel density or resolution, all have some direct relation with the number of components that fits into the integrated circuit. Since their inception, enhancements in all these capabilities have also increased exponentially.
To increase the accuracy of the law, specific formulation of law has been developed by Moore afterwards with more precise observation. In 1975, Moore revised his prediction as the number of components in the integrated circuits doubling every year to doubling every two years. The latest prediction of Moore was factored by Intel executive David House stating that computer performance doubles every 18 months following the Moore’s latest prediction. So when Intel, the pioneer of chip developments adapted Moore’s law as standard principle for advancing the computing power, the whole semi-conductor industry followed this outline on their chips.
The chip making companies used to estimate that increasing the components density will lead to an increase in computing power by x times. The computing power required for the enhancements till now were the consequence of adaption of Moore’s law. The effects of Moore’s law have far fetching implications on technological development. Since last five decades, the advancement from slow running, huge-sized computers to the developments of artificial assistants and AI powered devices, Moore’s holds the credit.

developers excelled to meet to double their computing power. But the soaring demand for smaller, faster and more efficient computers bound a limit line for Moore’s law to extend anymore. We have seen an exponential increase of transistor density for last half century following Moore’s law. But now, packing the transistors in the silicon wafer is no more an optimised solution to power the computer processing. A report from International Technology of roadmap for semiconductors (ITRS) claimed that by 2021, transistors will get to a point where they cannot shrink any further. The big-name chip makers like Intel and Samsung argue that making chips smaller is not economically viable now. Moore’s prediction was kept alive in the industry with Intel leading the change. But according to Intel, the technology roadmap for Moore’s law will scrap soon. Intel since 1970 has followed
Moore’s exponential curve and fit twice as many the transistors in the same space on a silicon chip. The continual shrinking has helped computers get more powerful and energy efficient. But now accommodating the transistors in the same space has become a shorthand idea, economically and practically. With the decreasing distance between the transistors, the heat release will increase. So making transistors further any smaller or decreasing the distance would not bring increase in computing capability. We have totally got down the piles of Moore’s law to form a grain. However, Moore’s law is individual exponential but the computing technology today demands parallel exponential. To run deep learning algorithms and develop AI architecture we need to leverage the computing potential. GPU’s and reprogrammable chips are a step towards delivering parallel computing power.

Moore’s law will always be an important base Moore’s law has helped us bring smartphones, high-speed internet services and major breakthroughs in the field such as artificial intelligence and genetics. In 1965, Moore predicted, “Integrated circuits will lead us to such wonders as
home computers-or at least terminals connected to a central computer-automatic controls for automobiles, and personal portable communications equipment.” Moore had a pioneering vision and all what he predicted is practically real today. But experts now say than the tenure of Moore’s law as the base for advancing the computing power is about to end. The rate of AI progress

will not increase with Moore’s prediction. Is it a mere moot now for the development of robust processing chips compatible to put AI in implementation? Moore’s law is no more a practical solution to create superintelligent technology is a strong point. Even, Moore initially in his article predicted the practical
application of Moore’s law to be for next ten years from 1965. But then with the constant advancement, the electronics industry benefited from the Moore’s standard method of designing processor chips till 50 years. The technology today is tending

to design artificial intelligence technology that matches the super intelligence of human brain. We agree to the fact that Moore’s law cannot create such powerful AI. But we cannot point Moore’s law as the reason for not having the computing capability and hardware for developing self-evolving, natural intelligence technology. Moore’s law still gives an important cadence for the development of AI. The basic AI that we have today has developed with the power obtained from the current processors; developed using Moore’s principle. And that sets the base of the idea of super intelligence technology. The rate of AI progress will increase when the computer processing speeds will match to that of the human brain. The best brain simulations by the best supercomputing clusters could hardly fetch 1 percent of the brain and 1/10,000th of the cognitive human brain speed. So all we are lacking is that super computing power which is must for the self-evolving technology. The naysayers of Moore’s law need to understand that AI will not spontaneously erupt
from nowhere with the end of Moore’s law. But we need supercomputing processing power that will make the AI possible; as we got Moore’s law years back which made possible computing power we have today. We need to figure out how unsupervised the learning would work, how the computers would detect what human brains could or how we could inculcate the human sensing ability into the machine; all that with small, efficient and optimised processors. The founder of SpaceX and Tesla, Elon Musk is coming up with NeuraLink which will merge human brains (neurons) with machines to develop selfevolving technology. The startup will find ways to figure out how learning with machines work. We need to copy the brain and make evolution that inculcates basic human thinking in the machines. Once this technological breakthrough occurs, the world will be a technological wonderland as we see in the movies and the earth will have an omnipotent God.

The Future of Internet of Things
All aspects of technology have tremendously changed since the advent of the Internet of Things in 2013. IoT will help businesses solve traditional industry-specific challenges with advanced solutions to connect things, collect data, gain insights, improve productivity and increase revenue. In an industry which has an almost cult-like following, Internet of things has somehow managed to achieve a great deal of accuracy. It deals with the principle of aggregating data from users. This data is later used to display targeted content, which is to a great extent similar to digital advertisements. Aside from ever-expanding the conversion ratio, Internet of things has also figured out how to provide valuable content to the users based on their interests.

Behavioral measurements is a key some part of this process, and the Internet of things creates innumerable opportunities to gather, investigate, and measuring data. The behavioral investigation fundamentally includes targeting on a customer and collect data about a specific buyer. This has attempted to drive up incomes and even increase competitiveness.
The Gaming Industry IoT has had profoundly impacted the gaming business as of late. Despite the fact that there has been only a handful of applications that have actuated IoT’s presence, that is a lot of research and background work for a wide variety of gadgets. OutSoft, Sproutling, and Edison are a portion of the players who have had an impact over the most recent couple of years. As the segment grows, it would not shock to see Samsung, Apple, and Xbox venture into the field.
The Casino Industry Online casino gaming has exponentially grown as of late. This often prompts the subject of mobile casino on the internet: so how will it change? The appropriate response may come as IoT, which has as of now enabled online gambling sites to eliminate a large portion of the dealers. Rather than the manual dealers, IoT would have their spot depending upon the unwaveringness status of a client. These would gradually annihilate issues of moderate processing and a portion of the similar issues experienced by players when playing on the web.

organizations have come up with VR gaming tech keeping in mind the end goal to take the segment forward. These tools take the client into another virtual world where they can perform exercises like in real life. This gaming gear is probably going to extend its span to the universe of watching movies using the gear. This would imitate the experience of viewing a movie in a real theatre. How Is Internet of Things Changing Operation of Media Companies? A new era of media strategy has been created to a great extent due to the revolution by the Internet of things. Additional spending has been occurring on IoT than any time in recent years. For instance, the spending on IoT is expected to surpass around $70 million by 2018. The entertainment and media industry will focus its IoT budget plan on viewpoints like product monitoring, supply chain, and customer monitoring of the premises. Product monitoring which includes tracking items that are being sold to customers has been getting a huge chunk of the spending. This figure ranged from around 34.8% in 2015. On the other hand, the supply chain monitoring included the GPS tracking

operations at a warehouse, distribution or even the production stage. Spending on this was at around 25.8% and expected that would go down in 2018. Without a doubt, mobile applications appear to be the focus of IoT. Over 60% of the organizations primarily depend on mobile applications with a specific end goal to monitor the client data. The remaining tend to focus on the generation and dissemination keeping in mind the end goal to assemble data. Surprisingly, wearable gadgets like smart watches don’t appear to have caught on as expected, and it is not surprising that data from these gadgets just contributed 4.2% to the total. It has been estimated that media organizations will use IoT in three areas – personalization, mobile applications, and authentication. Personalization – The world unmistakably is by all accounts moving towards personalized promotions. These are viewed as important as the execution of the promotion itself. Media organizations can now depend on information from a wide variety of sensors keeping in mind the end goal to give relevant ads to a specific user. Connected cars are viewed as a noteworthy market for this reason. With innovation featuring increasingly in autos, entertainment organizations could give video content in the autos. As autos focus on self-driving innovation, it would empower those media organizations to give media content in the car. Music streaming is viewed as one Technowize Magazine | may 2017

of the industries that could intensely benefit from this move. Upgrading Security of Personal Profiles – Even though passwords have been the conventional type of securing an Internet account, they have become less reliable in recent decades. It might take two or three years before the more prevalent two-stage verification process faces obscurity. IoT could provide the ability to replace passwords using sensors that would be associated with a client. This will likewise extend to a few gadgets going ahead. Mobile Apps – More brands are switching towards mobile applications as opposed to only a website. They know about the immense data capturing ability of the mobile apps. While a site could give particular data about the client like the location, this information is far second rate in comparison with a mobile app which travels all day, every day with the user. This empowers IoT to collect more data. It would Technowize Magazine | may 2017

While the media business absolutely stands to profit by these upgrades, that will positively be a few obstacles en route like lawful issues. All the more imperatively, the client should be persuaded to share their private information. Final Thoughts Internet of Things has really taken a massive leap of faith over the last couple of years. THE NERDIST As soon as I cross the threshold of my house after a usually hectic day at work, I am greeted by my loving husband, my adorable son, and the after-effects of an indoor tornado. It is a normal activity for me to play hopscotch around the house before I can make it to my bedroom. One day it is a soiled diaper, or a LEGO toy, or a rattler, I step into something new every single day. But I come home so drained out that I have to give myself an encouraging sleep to clean up the mess left behind my nanny. The nanny has made it very clear that she will only take care of my son and not his belongings. This may sound reasonable in theory but practically, it is your domestic help’s way of getting back to you. As she particularly only looks after my son, she does not take responsibility for the mess that is created in the process. The diapers will be right where they were dropped, the empty bowl of baby food will be by his bedside, the toys will be poking our feet from time to time, and the worst part is that the baby is residing in all this mess. Whenever I discuss this issue with my husband, he very coolly says that if you have such a huge problem with the nanny then do it yourself. But in order to do it myself, I have to give up my job and my professional dreams. Well at the end of the day, I am a selfish human. It’s not just about the money but the power and confidence I get from my job. Giving up all of that doesn’t seem

so appealing to me. But at the same time, I also want an efficient nanny who can look after my child and his things well. My colleague told me that the people of Japan are coming up with a new kind of robot. It’s called the Robot Nanny. This term instantly rang a bell and got me all excited. I thought that finally I will have a permanent solution to my babysitting woes. But then my conscience woke up and I felt guilty about it. If I appoint a Robot Nanny for my son, does that make me a bad mom?
Firstly, I would like to clarify your personal doubts. In the case of your child, you have already decided what you want to do but you want someone’s approval so that you don’t feel bad about it. So here it goes. Getting a Robot Nanny does not mean that you are running away from your child’s responsibility. It just means that a human nanny may not be as efficient as a robotic one. Therefore you need not feel bad about it; instead you might find a nanny which will take care of your kid better. Now let’s come to the technical aspect. Here I will discuss the Robot Nanny which not only looks after your child, but also keeps him entertained. It is a common complaint by the children of working parents that they get bored alone at home all day as their nannies aren’t interested in playing with them and have nothing to do. This is where the iPal comes in handy. iPal is a child-sized babysitter robot which is designed in such a manner that the child can instantly connect to it. It stands 90 centimeters tall and has big eyes with a tablet on his chest. Even though it might look like a kid, it is fully equipped to handle all kinds of adult responsibilities. The

founder of this robot Jiping Wang claims that iPal can easily keep kids occupied for a couple of hours. It can handle three to eight-year-old children without the need of any kind of adult supervision. This works well for those kids who come back from school and their parents arrive from work in a few hours. In the meanwhile, iPal interacts with the child in a language that seems natural and easy to comprehend. There is an ongoing debate which talks about the adverse effects of machinery on the upbringing of a child. But iPal claims that it is different from the cold-unfeeling mechanical robots. It is also a great educational tool for the children along with being a companion. It takes special care when the child is low and joins him in his happiness. With such compassion and the efficiency of technology, iPal is a great solution to your ‘babysitting woes’.
I have recently moved out of my parents’ home to pursue my college education in another city. Being in a new city that too all by yourself is an exciting experience which I plan to cherish thoroughly. As I don’t know too many people around and am trying to make new friends over time, I signed up on a popular dating app to get rid of my boredom. I have never been on a dating app before therefore it’s a novel experience for me. I have had a healthy dating life but I never went on blind dates or anything close. The people I dated were the ones whom I knew well over time and trusted to a certain extent. But being on a dating app is a step further than blind dates. In a blind date, you have a mediator who can jump in to help if something goes wrong. On a dating app, the person is an absolutely stranger. You never know if he is a rapist or a transgender or simply a clingy guy. I came in contact with a number of cute guys with a

THE NERDIST hint of smartness through this app but never actually went on a date with them. We flirted for a few days and as soon as he would ask me out, I would make excuses and that would be the end of the conversation. This is because there is a slight sense of remorse in me whenever I am swiping through people in the app. I feel like being on this dating app is against my ethics. I want to go on a date but I don’t so that I don’t feel guilty later on. It is really unethical to use a dating app?
You are not the first person who experiences guilt or feels unethical by being on a dating app. It is not about your or any other person, this is the perception of the society we are living in which is affecting our thinking. You need to understand that dating through an app is ethical or unethical depends on your own personal mentality. You are a grownup who can make her own decisions and must have her space. Therefore it is ethical or unethical only if you believe so. Anyone else’s judgment must not matter to you. Thinking about the rest of the world will serve as a hindrance all your life whenever you will have to take a decision. So just do what you want to do. If you keep avoiding dates and pass your time by flirting with cute guys, you will gradually run out of people to talk to. This is because it is a ‘dating’ app and hence at the end

of the day, nobody will like to take the conversation forward if you refuse to meet. Thus I personally believe that you must strike a conversation with someone only if you are interested in taking things forward. If you are uncomfortable with the idea of dating through such an app, then there’s no point of browsing through it as it will only waste your and the other person’s time. People usually use a dating app to meet other anonymous people who may be living on the next street or studying in the same college as you do. It is full of surprises which may be pleasant or unpleasant. If you consider dating through such an app, always make sure you are cautious. Your concerns about your safety are absolutely justified. Tell your roommate about the guy you are meeting and where will you meet him. This is so that in case you get into trouble; your friend can come looking for you. It is important to have the skill of distinguishing between good and bad people on a dating app. Take proper precautions before meeting a stranger and if you sense that something is not right, confidently walk out on him. Nothing is more important than your safety.

THE NERDIST Being an avid user of social networks like many other people, I have a query about them which does not affect me as a user but I am just plain curious. We start using a particular social media network only when it has a large user base. But how does it grow to that level from a mere startup? People would only join that network if it has a number of their friends or family members. Then how does a social media network convince the initial users to sign up for it?
I would like to appreciate your inquisitive nature which forced you to think from such an angle. It is human mentality to use something but we hardly think about how the whole process took place before it reached us. Here let’s treat social media as one such commodity. We started using it once it got popular and all our peers joined it but we never thought about how it got to the level it right now is at. Technically speaking, any such startup needs a certain mass of signed up users who can convince their peers to interact with them through this medium. But then the problem arises about how to find such people. Therefore whenever such a startup is planned, the founder decides to target people of a particular demography or with common interests who will willingly join as initial users. For example, in the case of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg kept this network exclusively available to his college mates
Technowize Magazine | may 2017
113
and once it got famous there, then it opened it up to other users as well. He used his college mates as that critical mass who would serve as a source of interaction for the new users. If this is not the case, then people will keep uninstalling the app if they have nobody to interact with. The whole purpose behind a social network is to provide a medium of human interaction. It will not be wrong to say that no social media app can develop or even sustain its progress without the contribution of its users. When the trend of social media was a new concept, the startup had to request people to sing up as users. This is not as easy as it sounds as why would someone waste time on a social media app if he has nobody to interact with. But now such networks are promoted through other contemporary networks. They have a tie up with a particular network through which people can know about the app more which will intrigue users to sign up for it. But if a company has abundant funds and does not want to go through such a procedure, what is simply done is that an existing social media network is purchased. Any social media network owes its profit as well as progress solely to its users as they attain advertisements on the basis of the number of people using the app on a regular basis. This makes it crucial for the company to keep the users happy and satisfied. For this, makers come up with unique features at regular intervals of time so that the user does not get bored. After all, the company can afford to pay their staff all thanks to the involvement of the users.

‘Stories’ Trending on Social Media: About its Rise to Fame What is that one object which you can’t step out of your house without? A majority of the people can answer this question within a fraction of the second and will have a common answer as well: Smartphone. A smartphone is not only a gadget or a means of communication but a solution for a number of everyday needs of an individual. In order to enhance the utility of the smartphone, unique apps are coming out in the market every single day. Despite all this, social media tends to dominate most of the usage of these smartphones. portals for this that users have a huge variety to choose from. But variety does not really matter as a social media platform is one such app which runs only on the basis of popularity. The more number of users an app has, it directly affects the number of people who will sign up for it in a positive manner. This is because there is no point of being on a social media platform if an individual’s peers aren’t using it as well. Due to such reasons, selective social media apps top the popularity list and have a humongous user interface. A major reason behind the fact that social media is so attractive is because the trends on this platform change on a regular basis. This keeps things interesting for the user as he comes across something new often. Such trends help the apps to prevent themselves from monotony which appeals the user to spend more time on them.

One such trend that first came out five years back is the Snapchat Stories. When Snapchat was initially launched in 2011 and seemed to be a refreshing change in comparison to other social media platforms. On a general basis, other such portals offer a medium where the individual can pen down his thoughts or share media files such as pictures or videos. But the layout of Snapchat stood out among all the other social media portals. It was a fun way to share pictures with a short caption and also assured complete privacy of the user. The user could control the time duration for which his friend could view his image and would be notified in case someone took a screenshot. This turned out to be beneficial in avoiding any kind of internet scandals or blackmailing. Due to such secure yet different features, Snapchat soon gained immense popularity among large masses. Another prominent feature of Snapchat was the Story. Whenever a user uploaded a story, he could select who could view them. This story would be visible to his selected audience for 24 hours precisely. The user could also check who all viewed his story and if anyone has taken a screenshot. These stories were a quick way to know what was going on in someone’s life. As the user base of Snapchat kept increasing, other notable social media portals decided to adopt the same.

Zuckerberg’s obsession with stories The Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg created uproar in the field of social media with his innovation. Facebook is one of the most widely used social media platforms in the world currently. Therefore as soon as Zuckerberg sensed tough competition crawling along, he decided to simply buy it. This is what happened in the case of Instagram and WhatsApp. Zuckerberg decided to splurge money on these two brands as he knew they would affect the Facebook market. Despite these acquisitions, there was a social media brand which was trending rapidly in internet world due to its unique approach. But instead of acquiring this brand, Zuckerberg thought of beating the brand at its own game. Here we are referring to Snapchat. Presently, the situation is such that if you open any of the trending social media apps on your phone, you will come across the Stories feature. Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and also WhatsApp now showcase the stories of your friends or those whom you are following. Open any of

these apps and you will find such stories loading on the top of your screen. But the question might pop into your head that why are stories suddenly visible at all leading social platforms? The reason is something close to the reason behind the acquisition of Instagram and WhatsApp. It focuses on adapting the selling point of another popular app to quiver that app’s market.
Why are Stories so popular on various platforms? The thought behind inculcating the feature of Stories in other apps except for Snapchat comes from a very basic human mentality. Everyone wants to inherit what the other person is doing so that he doesn’t feel left out. Same is the case among these social media apps. Almost all of them offer identical features to the user. But to survive in this competitive market, it is essential to come up with something unique to lure the users. As soon as there is such an innovation, the other companies rush to create something similar to that to break down the market of their competitor. This is what happened

in the case of Stories as well. As something new was spotted in the market, everyone leaped to do the same. Also, the popularity of Snapchat Stories was very evident especially among millennials. Now the young generation has always been the target audience in the world of social media as they can be helpful in increasing the user base on a rapid scale. And also these people are the ones who spend maximum amount of time of the day on such apps. Therefore even the advertisers such apps attain are related to the millennial age. After all, this generation is currently dominating the demography of the world. Introducing Stories was an appealing concept as when Snapchat came out with that feature, it was an instant hit. After some time, a number of advertisements also started pouring on for which Snapchat introduced the ‘Discover’ and ‘Live’ features. This attracted not only advertisers but it was also used to reach out to the masses to serve the purpose of promotion or send out a message. It is not news anymore that video ads through an online portal are the next big thing in the marketing world. People are always inquisitive about what someone does in his everyday life hence putting such a video ad at regular intervals will catch the attention of the user without the need to bore them. Snapchat has had paid ads for a while now but this will become a part of the Instagram stories this year itself.

Will Stories stay in the long run? There are numerous people complaining about the omnipresence of Stories but despite this, market analysts believe that Stories will be a part of the social media trends for a long time. But the medium of its popularity might waver from time to time. This is because as Stories are splurging out on all kinds of social media, the users have started finding it repetitive. It has lost the charm of exclusivity as it is common on various platforms. Still it is popular to a certain extent. The medium of popularity may keep changing in terms of the social media app as people may get fond of Instagram Stories for a while and when they get bored, they have the option of simply switching to Facebook. Therefore, due to the options available for Stories, the users now have the liberty to explore various social media platforms instead of being loyal to one. This clearly states that Stories will stay popular for a while but not under the name of one single brand, but different ones.
