Few Australian manufacturers can boast selling their wares to the world’s manufacturing powerhouses, but Gold Coast load pin specialist Delphi Measurement counts US and Chinese producers among its international customers.

“We don’t just sell components, although we do that too,” Mike says. “We actually partner with our clients to come up with the best solution for their operation and follow through until it’s 100 per cent right.”
While Delphi’s main business is custommaking load pin cells, its staff are also highly qualified in calibration, electronics and specialist software development.
The company is approaching its 40th year in business and remains highly valued by its clients for providing old-school service.
“A lot of our work is fixing problems where businesses have gone with imported equipment that’s let them down,” Mike says.
“We design and manufacture solutions for a wide variety of force monitoring and measurement applications – big or small – and the people who use us invariably come back because they know we’ll do what it takes to solve their issues and our components will last.”
As well as designing and manufacturing specialist load and lifting sensors and components, Delphi offers solutions for conveyor belt tensioning, mining, manufacturing, CNC machining, calibration and repair work, among other services.
“It’s very important for us to keep these bespoke services available in Australia,” Mike says. “Our clients understand that too.
“We need to be there for other Australian manufacturers and keep championing industry in this country.”
Delphi services large and small scale operations including construction and heavy industry, the maritime sector, oil, gas and mining, cranes, lifting and towing businesses, chemical processing and food and beverage manufacturing.

Transporting a large amount of office documents and crates has always been a challenge – but the X-Cart from MHA Products solves those problems thanks to its unique design.

A foot pedal brake allows the X-Cart to be locked in position while loading or unloading and the injection-moulded plastic and aluminium design means that while the X-Cart is lightweight, it is still very robust and has a great carrying capacity.
The X-Cart comes with one collapsible basket which will lock into place on either the top or bottom platform. The top platform can be folded back to allow larger items to be transported.
Extra baskets can be purchased for use on both platforms and up to four baskets can be stacked on the bottom platform.

LAMPO TRAILER MAKES EMERGENCY RESPONSE QUICKER AND EASIER
Ever been in an emergency response situation where you need multiple pieces of equipment collected and transported to site in a hurry?
A burst water main urgent call-out at midnight Monday night requires a mobile pump with a mobile generator and lights.
A two-week project of night-time tunnelling on a busy road requires again, a transportable pump with a generator, lighting tower, and a compressor.

NEW PLASTIC PRODUCT TO REPLACE MINERALS IN CEMENT
Polyrok is a new sustainable alternative to minerals used in concrete, and is going to form part of the foundation for a carpark installation for Coles in Horsham, Victoria.
The concrete slab carpark will be made partly out of the recycled soft plastics product. The innovation is being led by Victorian recycling RED group and Replas, in partnership with Coles.
The carpark is the first commercial construction project in Australia to make use of Polyrok.
Made from plastic bags and soft plastic packaging recovered from the REDcycle program, Polyrock has the potential to divert 105,000 tonnes of soft plastics from landfill each year, if used in commercial concrete projects across Australia.
Coles state construction manager Victoria Fiona Lloyd said this was the first time the product had been used in a commercial environment.
The project will help repurpose 900,000 pieces of soft plastic, to be used in the carpark at the soon-to-be-competed Coles Horsham redevelopment.
RMIT University is also an active partner throughout the whole development process.
Polyrok reduces the carbon footprint due to the reduced thermal mass it provides.
This tackles the plastic problem, in addition to carbon reduction, while being fit for purpose.
Federal Assistant Minister for Waste Reduction and Environmental Management Trevor Evans welcomed the collaboration to find innovative and practical ways to reuse soft plastics.
“There is huge potential and opportunity for infrastructure projects to help us build a more circular economy,” Mr Evans said.
“This is why the federal government has prioritised the development of new national standards and guidelines to encourage the use of recycled content in roads and other projects.”
Since the partnership began, Coles and its customers have diverted more than 1.3 billion pieces of soft plastic from landfill.

CAN YOU FIX A BOTTLENECK WITH AUTOMATION?
As food and beverage manufacturers strive to achieve greater efficiency in their manufacturing operations, they often assume that the panacea lies in adopting the automated manufacturing of the ‘factory of the future’, or Industry 4.0. magnify the effect of them, and building automation into a flawed system is more likely to create new bottlenecks than solve existing ones.
Finding bottlenecks
As manufacturing and its associated processes evolve, bottlenecks can appear, or move to a different part of the process. Manufacturers may have designed their business not to have any, but each time they add new technologies, machines, people, recipes, ingredients, capacity or suppliers, a potential issue may be introduced.
The best way to solve this issue is to identify what areas have become bottlenecks by evaluating metrics such as throughput, capacity, and wait time. Then evaluate the consequences of those bottlenecks. What operations are being delayed as a result? Thirdly, manage those bottlenecks. What can be done immediately to solve them? Using automation to resolve bottlenecks
Having many interconnected devices makes it easier to identify faults, and existing bottlenecks can easily be eliminated with the implementation of a good ERP system. If there is a blockage, an ERP system will find it. If there are ways to improve efficiencies, an ERP will reveal them. Every piece of data collected provides even greater insight into the way a factory is operating.
To reduce the pain that comes with eliminating either production, people or supply chain bottlenecks, food and beverage manufacturers need strong ERP project management with careful planning to steer the change management process. For most producers in the food and beverage sector, change does not happen easily, but it can be achieved more efficiently if they have a structured view of their whole organisation. This will help them to easily make changes because they can see the logic of how processes, systems, data and organisational hierarchies are designed.

After all, Industry 4.0 will connect whole systems, from supply chains to factory floors and machines, all the way through to business intelligence and analytics. Through technologies such as digitalisation, automation and data exchange, food and beverage companies can benefit from fully integrated and collaborative systems that respond in real time.
In smart factories, alerts are sent before systems fail so that manufacturers can proactively fix equipment, prevent bottlenecks, automate with precision and much more.
Industry 4.0 will automate a range of common food and beverage manufacturing processes, including identifying and re-ordering missing ingredients instantly, automatically picking ingredients and filling machines in FEFO order, maintaining machinery on an ongoing basis rather than waiting for a breakdown, centralised systems that speak to every connected machine, device, supplier and stockist and real-time data reveals performance minute by minute.
Food and beverage manufacturers across the Asia Pacific region face the challenge of providing a wide range of products that must be safe to consume. With short expiry times, tight timelines, and a need to be cost competitive, even relatively minor bottlenecks can have a significant impact on productivity and profitability and therefore they need to be quickly found and then fixed.
To understand what needs to be fixed, manufacturers need to identify their bottlenecks and manage them. Many bottlenecks have similar root causes, such as staff underperformance, problems with a machine, supply chain issues, poor ingredients planning or poor machine layout on the factory floor.
