where we explain everything that makes up this wonderful magazine to all that is System 2.0 Hello and welcome to the wonderful world of System 2.0. Some of you reading this may already be aware of this revolutionary and industry changing invention, and others may be wondering what a System 2.0 is. In simple terms a System 2.0 is a straight line cable tow designed for wakeboarding, that pulls riders continuously up and down a stretch of water. Whilst this sounds simple, it is a recent invention and has already changed the sport of wakeboarding forever. At the current growth rate, System 2.0 Wake Parks will outnumber traditional cable parks and boat lakes within a few years.
bring your own Now for a quick history lesson: legend wakeLiving parkwakeboard to life Pat Panakos from the USA met Christian Von Lerchenfeld, the owner of Sesitec, the world’s most innovative wakeboard cable tow manufacture. These two industry super powers got together and created the System 2.0, born from the desire to find a way to run more successful events while making it far easier and more affordable
The System 2.0 is a new style of riding and has numerous features that make it far different and in some ways better than a full cable. Most wake parks look like a floating skate park and the System 2.0 is the perfect tow for this. When you fall in, the System 2.0 picks you straight back up and you can hit the obstacle again instead of swimming back to the start. The way a System 2.0 works means that new obstacles are being created, we are now seeing quarter pipes being installed into wake parks all around the world. Incredible setups like Red Bull Wake Lab and Wake The Line are now possible and the face of wakeboarding is changing forever.
What about you, the rider? Whether you’re a beginner or pro, the System 2.0 is designed for every level of rider. For learners the high pull and precise speed control the operator has means you can not fail to get up, it is by far the most efficient and user-friendly way to learn to ride. bring Once you have learnt to wakeboard and are ready to wake
25 for people to open new wake parks. The System 2.0 is designed by the best German engineers you can find and the most talented wakeboarders on the planet. In the past, to open a wake park you needed over £250,000 for a full-size cable, or a boat which drinks more fuel than you dare to imagine, which made the concept of opening and operating a wake park a challenge! Gaining planning permissions and approvals for a full size cable is both costly and time consuming and ultimately a wake park operating with a boat has low profit margins The System 2.0 has changed everything. It is now easier and far more affordable to open a new wake park. Why is this so great? Well because more places to ride means more people can learn to wakeboard, and the sport opens up to a far wider demography of people. For business and the sport, it is great to have new wake parks opening everywhere. In less than 4 years over 150 System 2.0’s have been installed around the world.
progress, look no further because the System 2.0 is the ultimate tool to learn air tricks and progress your riding. Fall in and within 20 seconds you’re up riding again and progressing. For obstacles the amount of fun that can be had is insane, and with continuous riding you can learn new tricks with every pass. Heading down to your local System 2.0 wake park is for any standard of rider and whether you just want to have fun, or step up your riding by learning new tricks, it will work for you. The System 2.0 has changed the sport forever and will continue to do so for a long time to come! This little magazine is an annual guide designed to keep you well informed on everything System 2.0, it is packed with information on events, new and existing wake parks, obstacles and how to open your own park. Happy reading and hopefully see you on the water soon. Peace, Tim

Last summer Wakestock hosted the WWA Rail Europeans on the infamous pool gap. In the past the pool gap has always been a sideshow to the Wakestock boat comp and the prize money has never been that great. In 2011 the World Wakeboard Association (WWA) teamed up with Wakestock to raise the level of competition on the pool gap and the WWA Rail Europeans was created. The likes of Shawn Watson, Brian Reeder and Danny Thollander all yourin own travelled from the USA tobring compete the event. The one great wake park to life thing about rail riding is that the UK riders are on the same level as the rest of the world. Riders like CK Koester, Marc Rossiter, Lee Debuse and James Young all made the semi finals and CK and Rossiter showed the UK standard is high by battling well in the final. In the end it was Aussie rider Mitch LangfIeld who took victory with consistent and stylish rail riding. He was hands down the winner and new WWA Rail European Champion.

Wakestock was created over 10 years ago and has grown from a wakeboard competition with a party in a car park to a music festival and wakeboard event with 30,000 people attending. It is by far the most prestigious boat competition that you can win this side of the Atlantic and widely regarded as the biggest wake event in the world. Over 7000 people line the shores of Pwlheli Marina to watch the boat comp and the pool gap is situated bang in the middle of the music festival! Headline acts have included Dizzee Rascal, Biffy Clyro, Chase & Status, Pendulum, Groove Armada, Moby, Calvin Harris and many more.

HAWKS
One of the key reasons for the success of Wakestock is its location just outside Abersoch in North Wales. Abersoch is a very cool place with crystal blue sea, sandy beaches and a back drop of the Snowdonia Mountain range. Combine natural beauty with a party vibe and wakeboarding and you’re in for the most fun weekend of the year. For those of you who don’t know about this fantastic event, trust me and stick 6-8 July 2012 in your diary right now and make the epic journey to North Wales.
In 2006 the organisers wanted to bring wakeboarding onto the festival site and contacted rail building legend Pat Panakos from the USA to design the now legendary Wakestock Pool Gap. It is a monster of a structure that spans over 200 feet in length and holds almost 200,000 gallons of water! It means that a wakeboard comp can be held away from traditional bodies of water and in the heart of venues like music festivals, boat shows and city centres. Wakeboarding takes a huge influence from skateboarding and snowboarding and that is exactly where the pool gap style came from. It features one high pool which is 8’ off the ground and then a lower landing pool, this means that the rails built in between the pools have a step down effect similar to a skateboarder riding a handrail alongside some steps or a snowboarder on a down rail in a mountain snow park.
straight away. It was the first System 2.0 to land in the UK and was used at Wakestock 2009. The difference was just mind blowing, the turnaround of riders was so much faster, the action was nonstop, it was more crowd pleasing, the pull was far superior for the riders and hence better tricks went down! It was a blinding success and really stepped up the level of competition on the pool gap. The Wakestock pool is one of the most legit and talked about rail setups in the world and it now hosts a competition format that it deserves. Each year Tim Woodhead and the crew from Industry Wake Parks build a new rail setup on the pool gap. In 2011 it was a street-style setup with an incline rail in the middle and 2 long and thin metal hand rails, one a straight down and one a flat, down, flat. This setup was super technical and meant the real rail riders stood out from the rest. Wakestock is a huge part of the UK wakeboarding community and loved by everyone, it simply should not be missed!
JAMES-PARKER
From 2006 to 2008 the pool gap used petrol powered winches to tow the wakeboarders. At the time this was quite revolutionary but the reality of it was that the pull was inconsistent and the turnaround time between riders was very slow. The rider had to pull the handle and rope back to the start dock after each ride, and this took plenty of time. As soon as the System 2.0 was invented Wakestock stepped up and ordered one

25 Red Bull run some of the most unique and cutting edge extreme sports competitions going, from the Red Bull Air Races and world famous X-Fighters to the likes of Red Bull Crashed Ice. Red Bull are big and ridiculously good at what they do. So when they called up the Industry Wake Parks office to chat about a possible wakeboard event, it was a monumental day for the sport in the UK. Red Bull had been talking to pro wakeboarder CK Koester and kitesurfer Aaron Hadlow who shared a dream about riding the flat waters inside a harbour. The UK is full of historic harbours in stunning locations, always with calm conditions that would be perfect for a wakeboard contest. It was from these early talks that the foundations of Red Bull Harbour Reach started. The idea of riding inside a harbour developed and the concept of jumping over the surrounding walls soon came in to Red Bull’s plans. As the plan developed the first priority was to find a location and Jamie Gatley from Red Bull came across the famous
5 Cobb at Lyme Regis. First built around 1328 it certainly has some history! Inside the Cobb and the rest of the harbour walls is a perfectly sheltered harbour, home to both fishing and pleasure boats. The Cobb wall is over 9m wide and at low tide over 5m high. The location was set and next up Industry Wake Parks had to create a setup which included going over the Cobb wall! Two huge custom fabricated kickers were built, along with a couple of natural features in an effort to keep the image of a harbour such as boats and fishing nets. An incline rail was made using an old canoe and a step-up step-down jib was made using two old sailing boats. A rooftop rail was also constructed which went over the Cobb from the outside of the harbour to the inside. The setup was unique, different and scary as hell for the riders! Nothing like this had been created before. The riders had never jumped over a 9m wide sea wall and had never ridden a roof top rail that was built on top of a 500 year old wall!

The only possible tow for the event was a Sesitec System 2.0! To install the System 2.0 was tricky, one tower was an easy install located on the land, but the other tower was in the middle of the ocean making it harder to install. After some interesting logistics the course and System 2.0 were set!
BRADLEY
On Saturday July 30th 2011 a handpicked selection of the UK’s finest wakeboarders arrived at Lyme Regis to compete in the Red Bull Harbour Reach. Six thousand people lined the beach and outer harbour wall. The Red Bull sound system truck was blasting out tunes and the event got underway. Outside of the harbour, the sea had become extremely choppy with an on-shore wind, which added a whole other level to the contest. This sea swell meant the landing conditions for the kickers were tricky, as the riders could have landed on the crest of a wave, making for a heavy and dangerous landing. Despite the testing conditions outside the harbour wall, the riders stepped up and battled for the big prize money. Each rider had two attempts to ride the course, hoping to qualify for the six-man final.

Johnny and Sam Carne, Scotty Broome, Louis Floyd, Dan Nott and CK Koester made up the final and it was down to them to stun the crowd and go all out for the win. Johnny Carne stuck a huge 540 over the wall, which won trick of the day, and his brother Sam took the overall win and Harbour Reach title! Dan Nott went sailing past the 16m marker and won the biggest air of the day. The riders had seriously stepped it up, some of the biggest glides and kicker tricks ever seen had gone down and it was now party time! The event was by far one of the most insane wakeboard competitions ever held, it was original, it scared the riders, and drew a huge crowd. It was fun, it was gnarly and it was just what Red Bull is all about! We will all be back in Lyme Regis on July 21st 2012 for Red Bull Harbour Reach, see you there!

Even if you only learnt to wakeboard the day before the competition you can still enter the Blackpool Wake Series. The style of the day’s activities are designed to be fun and friendly. When you sign up to ride in the comp you get to ride all day on the System 2.0. From the morning opening time till late afternoon all the entrants can freeride on the System 2.0 and there are pro riders on hand giving coaching and performing demos. The competition begins at 3pm with the riders split into categories that reflect their style. The divisions range from rookies, to ladies, juniors, wakeskate and many more.
No matter what your age, gender or standard there is a division suitable for you. Loads of prizes get given out to the top three in each division and then people can carry on riding and getting more water time. In 2012 the Blackpool Wake Park Series will be back and even better than before, there are more divisions planned, new sponsors and prizes and some banging after parties lined up. The series of competitions really helps to bring together the riding community at Blackpool Wake Park, riders who previously had never met have become good friends and ride together at various times during the week. It also inspires riders to want to be on the water more, especially so that they can learn a new trick to make their run better in the next comp! Massive thanks go out to all the riders from the 2011 series and the amazing sponsors: Mystic, Oakley, Hyperlite, SkullCandy, Relentless, Reef and Jacksy.

The Blackpool Wake Series was created in 2011 by the teams at Industry Wake Parks and Blackpool Wake Park. The 3-event series is designed as a grass roots wakeboard and wakeskate competition for all levels of riding ability, with the key aim of helping progress and inspire the local riding community at Blackpool Wake Park. The facility has only been open for just under two years and being so new they wanted to create a series that would help bring the riders together to push each other’s riding and learn new tricks.

MATT CROWHURST The Spring Open and Welsh Open have been created by Glasfryn and Industry Wake Parks and are annual contests that take place at Glasfryn Wake Parc in North Wales. The Spring Open happens in April designed to kick off the season with a bang and get everyone motivated to start riding again after the winter hibernation period. The Welsh Open has become a season ender for the local wake scene and is always held on the closed Saturday to Bonfire Night. Both of these comps are run in a similar manner to that of the Blackpool Wake Series. Once you have signed up, the whole day is spent riding on one of Glasfryn’s three System 2.0’s and six obstacles!
We could post all the results here and tell you who won which division, but that is not really what the two competitions are about, it is more about giving people the buzz to constantly return and meet new friends. What is more important than winning these events is who has improved the most! In 2011 there were seven months between the Spring Open and the Welsh Open and in that time it was incredible to see the improvements to riders like Jordan Phillips, Libby Henderson, Sarah Kilip, Ifor Jones and Robyn Seymour-Jones. At the Welsh Open in 2011 one of the highlights was seeing Robyn SeymourJones stick an awesome run that included landing a 360 off the kicker for only the third time and getting the whole crowd buzzing with excitement. Whether or not you are landing your first surface 180 or first 720 off the kicker you will be getting the same excited feeling and applause from the crowd and fellow riders. Thanks to the sponsors: O’Shea, Relentless, Mystic, Renthal, Skull Candy, Reef, Oakley and Jacksy

LEE DEBUSE The London Boat Show is one of the biggest water sports events in the UK and attracts over 110,000 visitors every January to the Excel centre in Docklands. In 2011 the boat show constructed a huge 70 x 24 metre indoor pool complete with a grandstand for the crowds, beach bar, huge TV screens and plenty of other attractions. Industry Wake Parks worked closely with the boat show and installed a System 2.0 into the roof of Excel. This was a big first, never before had a cable tow been setup without using towers to hold the cable in the air. Sesitec custom designed and fabricated two attachments so that the System 2.0 motor and pulleys could be suspended from the roof.

The System 2.0 towed the wakeboarders over the water and Industry Wake Parks installed 2 obstacles into the pool, a kicker and a box rail with a bank. Each day the wakeboard team made up of Dan Nott, Jonty Green, Lee Debuse and CK Koester, performed to the crowds showcasing what the sport is all about and demonstrating their skills. On the Thursday evening a competition was held on the pool with £1000 up for grabs for best air trick, best rail trick and best kicker trick. It was amazing to have the huge pool inside which featured as an integral part of the London Boat Show. We showed the sport of wakeboarding to thousands of new faces and even taught people to ride during the ‘Have A Go Sessions’. Industry Wake Parks will be back at the 2012 London Boat Show so make sure you go and say hello and check out the wakeboard shows.

Club Wake Park is located at Grendon Lakes in Northamptonshire and takes advantage of one of the many sheltered lakes on the site. The lake is near perfect for a System 2.0, it is just over 30 metres wide and 200m long and is surrounded by tall trees meaning it is always flat calm! The epic conditions are aided by a decent set of obstacles which includes two large kickers, a small kicker, flat bar and rooftop rail. The wake park is a true rider owned and operated business and this shines through when you visit. Toby Oliver, the owner loves nothing more than riding and because he understands what riders want, his wake park is designed to meet these demands. The System 2.0 is setup at almost 10m high and over 200m long, this makes it one of the best in the UK for air tricks. You can shorten the line and learn raleys and back rolls within one set! With a long line the pull resembles that of a full size cable and riders can go almost as big at Club Wake Park as they can at any full size cable around the UK. Tricks like double S-bends and numerous tricks to blind have all gone down at this wake park thanks to the high pull. The site at Grendon Lakes includes a bar, camping, wakeboard boat lake, fishing, paint ball and other activities, making for a great half-day visit or a weekend away.

Red Bull Wake of Fame, Wake the Line, FISE, Wakestock, Red Bull Harbour Reach, Nico’s Cash for tricks are just some examples. These are very exciting times for the wakeboard industry as the appropriate tools and businesses are in place to help the sport to grow. It is now easier to open a successful wake park than ever before!

So you have the dream to open a wake park? Well congratulations you have already made the first step towards fulfilling that dream; you are reading this and about to email Industry Wake Parks to find out even more! You can’t buy experience and that is one thing that the team at Industry Wake Parks have by the bucket load, and they are here to help you turn your dreams into a reality.

Your first step is one of the most important ones, finding a location. There are huge areas of the UK and Ireland with massive local populations but without a wake park within 100 miles! When you search for your location, don’t worry about looking for water, it can often be an easier process to dig a lake than to find one you can gain permission to use. The cost to dig a lake is not as great as you may first think and in the right conditions it can be a very sensible option. We work closely with our partners ‘Exc@v8’ who dig lakes commercially and can not only offer decent advice but also dig a lake for you.
2
Don’t forget that a wake park doesn’t have to be a completely new business or location, adding a System 2.0 to an existing boat lake can transform a clubs balance sheet and facilities. There are hundreds of activity centres around the UK, some of which could be interested in subletting one of their lakes, there is only one way to find out! A System 2.0 can also compliment an existing full size cable by increasing capacity and massively improving the return business from beginners. Learning to wakeboard on a System 2.0 is a far more rewarding and fun process than on a full cable due to how easy it is, thus people are far more likely to come back. Once you have the location, Industry Wake Parks will work with you to pre-plan the site and work out how best to operate a wake park on it. Next up is to gain the relevant permissions to use it and this requires speaking to the local authorities and council. Due to the fact a System 2.0 can be portable there are ways around needing planning permission, but we do not recommend this.
JEFF MCKEE
PATRICK VIERERBE
Once you have approvals and finance the next step of the journey is a detailed plan of the wake park, and a site visit from Sesitec or Industry Wake Parks will involve a full survey. The production of the cable then takes place, followed by the installation and training of the wake park staff. The training that Industry Wake Parks offer includes the System 2.0 Operators License, accredited by the British Water Ski and Wakeboard Federation, and full operating guidelines are supplied to each new wake park.
WOODHEAD
Once the System is installed, a soft opening can take place so that the staff get used to running the wake park and then a full-blown opening party and press day will launch your new business. Once you’re open we advise you accredit your wake park with the BWSW, then it is time to develop your park and gain from all our after sales support.
WOODHEAD
The next stage is gaining investment and finance, as it is not just a System 2.0 you need, but also obstacles, a shop, showers and changing rooms, club house, power, water and maybe a cafe. You need to create a thorough and realistic business plan.
WOODHEAD
To have your local council on side with your project is very important. In general planning for a System 2.0 Wake Park takes around six weeks but it can be longer.
Industry Wake Parks can help you with every single aspect of opening a wake park, such as training all your staff, helping build a business plan, organising events at your wake park, bringing sponsors, providing the cable and obstacles and much more. We offer consultancy packages which can run for anything from six months to three years. The idea of these packages is to help wake parks open and operate successfully. On top of this our media partner, AMP Creative, can work with you to create a brand. This includes logo design and artwork, websites and social media, photography to promote your park and professional film services to really get you noticed online and in the wake and local communities. Good luck with your dream of opening a new wake park and don’t forget to ask for help, that is exactly what we are here for!

There are many parks around the UK who have chosen to install Industry Wake Park obstacles, and deservedly so as they have over a decade of experience building rails and features for international events and wake parks alike. This experience is invaluable and allows them to make kickers and rails that not only work, but are also safe and extremely durable. A common problem for new wake parks is when owners with no past experience of designing or fabricating wake specific obstacles start to try and make their own. Nine times out of ten this results in bad rails for the riders and a big waste of money for the business. Trust should be given to the experts from the start.
MARC ROSSITER AT RED BULL HARBOUR REACH
Industry Wake Parks design and fabricate their own obstacles in the UK. Highly experienced riders, who understand the shapes and angles required to make a good wake park feature, design all the obstacles. Everything they make is fabricated by engineers with over four decades of engineering experience and qualifications.

The construction process uses mild steel galvanised frames covered in polypropylene on the surfaces and the sides. Styrofoam sheets are used to keep the obstacles buoyant and all the surfaces are fixed using countersunk bolts and nylok nuts. They are extremely safe, without any timber or screws used anywhere in the construction process, meaning riders won’t get splinters or injure themselves on protruding screws if they fall. All the surfaces are bolted down direct to the framework and every edge of the surface and sides are bevelled. These obstacles are long lasting and durable. Picking which obstacles to use at a wake park is incredibly important and it can make or break a wake park. The wrong selection and you won’t attract riders, but with a great setup and highly original features, riders will travel from all over the UK to come to your wake park. Consideration must also be given to all standards of riders and a wake park needs to have a steady ladder of obstacles that people can progress to as they improve.

25 UNIT are pushing the sport of wakeboarding more than any other company right now, hands down. They are bringing a whole new level of professionalism and innovation to wake parks and events all over the world. UNIT are a German based company who create wake and snow parks. They are heavily linked with both Sesitec and Pat Panakos of the Wake Park Project, and use cutting edge design and fabrication methods that are unrivalled by any of their competitors. UNIT own and run Wake The Line, which over the last few years has developed into the number one wakeboard event in the world, as it is the most prestigious event to be invited to compete in, and the obstacle setups are mind
Quarter Pipe blowing. One of the reasons behind the success of UNIT is that the obstacle shapes are rider designed. The likes of Nico Von Lerchenfeld, Kevin Henshaw, Steffen Vollert, Pat Panakos and Andy Klob are all key members of the UNIT wake team. The unique feature of UNIT obstacles is that they are plastic welded, this means there are no metal or timber frames inside, it is all plastic and this makes them extremely safe, durable and usable. UNIT is the first company using welded PE in order to make wakeboard obstacles. All their products are double seam welded, they are a German TUV-certified company and their products come with a 5-year warranty.

If you want to open the best wake park in the business then there is simply no question, you need UNIT obstacles. They are maintenance free, they will last for decades and they have shapes that riders love. If you want to build your own rails out of timber then you will have to remake them every couple of years and do hours of maintenance each week! Some park owners think these obstacles are too expensive, but because of the durability and incredible construction methods used by UNIT, they are extremely cost effective over a five to ten year period. Think of how much labour you will save and how much safer your wake park will be. UNIT don’t just do obstacles either, they have recently launched floating walkways and start docks for cables that stop backwash, self clean themselves and are extremely stable and user friendly for exiting the water.
SUESS
The tongue and groove system for joining the parts together ensures a clean, seamless connection without any visible screws or bolts, making these obstacles the safest in the industry and the smoothest to ride. The surface of each obstacle gives a very consistent slide, which is exactly what you want as a rider.
Scrolling down through the UNIT catalogue or website you feel like a kid who has been let lose in a big toyshop! It is easy to get carried away due to the huge amount of variety and impressive designs they have. From simple kickers, boxes and flatbars to the signature series, transfer boxes, quarter pipe and pipe rail. UNIT have the biggest collection of obstacles on offer and they are constantly releasing new shapes and ideas.

2012 is set to be one of the most exciting years yet in the development and growth of System 2.0 Wake Parks, and in spring a number of new wake parks will be opening. The first is Wake Up Docklands in London. They are starting with two System 2.0’s and three obstacles including a UNIT bank, which will be the only one of its kind in England. Based in Victoria Dock right next to the Excel Centre, the venue is simply stunning and features a unique back drop which includes Canary Wharf and the Millennium Dome. Wake Up Docklands System 2.0 was the 100th System dispatched from the Sesitec factory, and they got a gold carrier to celebrate this milestone!
There is plenty of growth expected at the current wake parks too with Wake Up Brighton increasing capacity and installing a second System 2.0 and more obstacles. Glasfryn already have 3 System 2.0’s operating at their site and it is very good to see the wake parks installing more systems and this really helps to show how successful they are.
At the historic and listed site of Hilsea Lido in Portsmouth a new wake park called South Coast H20 will open in the Spring and will feature a System 2.0 and 3 obstacles from Industry Wake Parks including a flat bar, incline and kicker. If you live in Essex then you will be especially happy as a new wake park is opening in Basildon, which features a System 2.0 and 6 Industry obstacles. In Scotland there is an incredible project underway called Fox Lake Adventures, this is a big project and the full opening will most likely be in spring 2013.
Harbour Reach is set for July 21st 2012 and that event will be growing in stature as it enters its second year. For the grassroots comps there will be a new Sesitec UK and Ireland Tour, as well as the Blackpool Wake Series, Spring Open and Welsh Open, which are all happening again.

Just Wake at Tattershall Lakes and Country Park is another double System 2.0 wake park due to open in spring 2012 and will feature 2 cables and an exceptional rail park. The lake is highly sheltered and will always be flat calm! To find out more about all these new spots opening make sure you follow System2WakeParks.co.uk for all the latest info.
On the event side of things Industry Wake Parks will be running all the wakeboarding at the London International Boat Show again in January. Then they will host the WWA Rail Europeans at Wakestock and everyone is excited to see what they build for the pool gap this year! Red Bull
In 2012 Industry Wake Parks is developing into the Middle East and with System 2.0’s being installed in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. One of the huge benefits of this is that qualified System 2.0 staff can work the British summer and then head to the UAE for the winter to work the wake parks over there. The System 2.0 revolution will continue into 2012 and beyond and it is certainly amazing to see the sport growing so much.
