The quiet secret just north of Nashville... Visit
Morgantown
Morgantown is a quaint charmer. Spend the day with us and you’ll be sure to find your special treasure. Our many specialty shops have a wonderful selection of goods, including clocks, primitives, dolls, Boyds Bears, candles, fabrics, Indian artifacts, quilts, knives, grandma’s china, a home or garden accent, floral bouquets and much more. Family operated restaurants still serve true down home cooking, and you can often find community hosted events with lots of fun for the whole family. So come visit us where you will always hear, “glad to meet you, please come again”!

Brown County Almanack Visitors Guide | Spring 2012
The story behind the spelling of ‘Almanack’. Well, it’s a tradition. “Kin” Hubbard, creator of those cartoony figures you see around Nashville, drew “Abe Martin of Brown County” for the Indianapolis News from 1904-1930. The Abe Martin character offered wit and wisdom with a questionable grasp on English, but a firm root in old-time practicality. Hubbard published five “Almanack”s full of Martin’s sayings, intended as parodies of “Poor Richard’s Almanac” or the “Old Farmer’s Almanac.” Brown Countian Tom Hensely published the first Brown County Almanack in 1965, retaining the Hubbard spelling and sensibility. The Brown County Democrat revived the tradition in the early 1970s, and has carried on quarterly ever since.

The views in Brown County are breathtaking any time of year, but the real beauty of the county lies in its abundance. When the snow thaws, the birds return and the flowers begin to bloom. Spring in Brown County offers much to see and do to rejuvenate your body, mind and spirit after a long winter’s rest. To help you get started, we combed the area to find ways to test your strength, stretch your mind and revive your spirit. The rest, now, is up to you.

Let’s Get Physical Zip lines, paintball, hiking, horseback riding, canoeing and fishing are all offered in Brown County. The hard part, then, is deciding what to do first. Find the outdoor activity that’s right for you at any number of companies—like Brown County Wilderness, eXplore Brown County and Rawhide Ranch. At Rawhide, you can choose a new activity every day of your stay, says Dusty McDaniel, horse operations manager. “We have zip lines, campfires, a fire pit every night, and guests can just stick around and play horseshoes,” he says. “You can go mountain biking and hiking on our trails … whatever people can come up with, they can do.” If you feel like going for a horseback ride, check in with McDaniel on the availability of the ranch’s 17 trail horses. The rides take anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour, and all the horses are kid-friendly, McDaniel says. “They’re great for families,” he explains, “or for the beginning or nervous rider.” The horseback rides are walking rides only, so if you’d like something, say, a little zippier, try the ranch’s zip line package. For $30, each guest gets six rides on various lines. Night zip line rides will also be offered, starting this

spring. Regardless of which rides you choose, McDaniel says ranchers concentrate on getting their guests to enjoy themselves. “Everybody gets a good laugh out of the deal.” Valley Branch Retreat’s eXplore Brown County also offers plenty of zip with its 13 cable rides, including soars through treetops and over a four-acre lake. Owner Gary Bartels says his adventure center is best known for its zip line canopy tours, though guests come to the area in droves for its other offerings as well. Bartels, with the help of sons Christopher and Lance, has spent the past 10 years building eXplore Brown County into what it is today, with its cabin and tent camping accommodations, a large entertainment hall, 60 acres of paintball fields, 30 miles of single- and double-track trails for hiking and mountain biking, plus miles upon miles of trails for all-terrain vehicles. Bartels says his center offers plenty to do for multiday visits, and he regularly books customized stays for corporate, school and church groups, as well as birthday and bachelor parties. If you want fun on two wheels around the county, consider contacting the Hoosier Mountain Bike Association or the RedBarn Jamboree & RV Park (where you can also rent mountain bikes) for suggestions on the best trails to match your riding level. Brown County State Park offers 25 miles of trails lovingly created and maintained by volunteers of the Hoosier Mountain Bike Association, and all the trails offer various levels of difficulty, the association’s president, Paul Arlinghaus, says. The trails have themes, he explains, from beginner rides “that you can ride with a new bike” to more advanced trails with steep slopes and 6-inch-wide paths. Riders can also tackle advanced trails on the property of Gnaw Bone Camp. Call ahead to check trail conditions and to get the official OK from the camp’s owner, Alice Lorenz. Regardless of where you ride, Arling-

haus says riders need to check weather conditions before they set out. “We advise folks not to use the trails when they’re wet and muddy,” he explains. Arlinghaus says riders also need to “be prepared to encounter other trail users; downhill riders need to yield and slow down, and make sure you know how to do basic maintenance, have the tools and have the ability to repair your bike.” And, he adds, always take a trail map. Brown County State Park also offers plenty of paved roads where guests can

hop on their road bikes and take in the scenic views. Visitors can also consider exploring Brown County via motorcycle. LTD Motorcycle Rentals will even deliver the bikes to your location. Call ahead to make a reservation or visit the website (www.ltdcyclerental.com) to check for motorcycle availability. The park itself offers a wide variety of activities for guests and families. There are hiking trails, biking trails, bridle trails (the park offers horse rentals or guests can bring their own horses), swimming pools and

lakes to fish and canoe, says Kevin Snyder, assistant property manager at the park. Mind over Matter It’s easy to find ways to expand your mind in Brown County. Ask anywhere, and you’re likely to find someone with information on an outdoor class or workshop being hosted by a local potter, a painter, musician or weaver. le At T.C. Steeal site ic r Histo Sunday of April, May and June, is in the works, and classes and workshops are regularly offered as well. T.C. Steele artist-in-residence John Bradley will host workshops and classes throughout the spring, including a workshop on garden design at The Garden Gala and Plant Sale on May 12. On May 19, Bradley will be doing a demonstration during the Festival of Flowers Paint Out, an annual plein air painting competition at the Steele site. “During this time of the year, the peonies and the irises are wonderful specimens to admire and paint,” Richards says. “We usually have over 100 artists of all ages registered to paint that day. Spring is such a beautiful time to be out here.” At Brown County State Park, Snyder says guests can learn a thing or two at the Nature Center, which offers interactive programs for the young and young at heart. “We have a full-time naturalist on staff” who runs the programs, Snyder says, “and the center also has fun, informative and educational displays, as well as a bird observation room.” In this room, birds can’t see visitors, “but you can see and hear them. It’s really cool to see them that close.” Springtime guests to Brown County can also join in one of the county’s biggest events of the year. The Wildflower Foray offers participants a chance to gain knowledge about local flora through three days (April 27 to 29) of hikes and programs that focus on the area’s natural history. Included are wildflower and bird walks, wetlands hikes, a boat trip and more. Guests can choose hikes on trails throughout the T.C. Steele property and at other nature areas, including the Hoosier National Forest, Indiana University, Sycamore Land Trust and Nature Conservancy lands. All programs and hikes are free, but some of the locations charge a gate fee. Find more information on the Web at www.fs.usda.gov/detail/hoosier/ workingtogether/partnerships.

Easy Spirit Some say the views in Brown County are so beautiful that simply being outside can revive your spirit. Mike Kelley believes the natural beauty at his property at Stone Head (see sidebar on page 28) offers guests the opportunity to revive spirits through hiking, meditating and more, and Stone Head is only one such location for a little peace and quiet. Snyder says visitors head to Brown County State Park for much of the same. “We’re best known for our vistas and views within the park,” he explains. “We have the second-highest hill in Indiana, and the surrounding hills that are here are pretty close in height to that. We have views where you can see for miles or tens of miles.” Each day at the park offers something different to see. “A lot of folks will come here early in the morning and catch a sunrise,” he adds.
Michael Rebman of Michael’s Massages has “always connected to God through nature, so just being outdoors is spiritual for me,” he explains. “Brown County has a spirit all its own.” Massage, Rebman says, benefits the mind, body and spirit, and he offers outdoor chair massages, as well as full-body massages in private locations for his clients. Paula Sutton of Gaia’s Touch also offers on-site massages, and “on nice, warm days, I do offer to hold sessions for Reiki, readings and natural health sessions outside if a client so wishes,” she explains. “There have been times I have taken clients outside of my office, and we have walked barefoot in the grass. It’s an easy way to lose stress and slow down. “My view on living in Brown County is that any outdoor activity or quiet time is rejuvenating to the body, mind and spirit,” says Sutton. “The land here has that effect on us.”

Sun Kissed
Caring for Stone Head and its surrounding land is a labor of love for one Brown County local By Sherri Cullison
At the corner of Indiana 135 and Bellsville Pike in the heart of Salt Creek Valley sits a well-known Stone Head, which has for years been kissed by sun, wind, snow and age … as well as by perhaps hundreds of Brown County locals and guests. The Brown County mile marker was created in 1851 by Henry Cross as his contribution to the county’s required roadwork for men, but over the years, the marker became more historic relic than a display of necessary information. The landmark notes its position 17 miles east to Columbus and 27 miles west to Fairfax, a town that no longer exists. Today, tourists and passersby regularly visit the landmark to have their photographs taken next to the stone bust—very often kissing its weathered cheeks before the camera. Behind the landmark is a farmhouse, built in 1891 and restored by current owner Mike Kelley to become a charming tourist home.
28
Beyond the house lay 122 acres of Brown County land where Kelley suggests passersby might want to stop for a stroll along prairie grass-lined paths, or to bird watch, hike or simply sit a minute and meditate. Kelley recently had five adjoining properties resurveyed to form one piece of land to someday be dedicated as an official nature preserve. “The land will be donated probably to the Sycamore Land Trust (SLT) as a protected property for others to enjoy,” he explains. “In the meantime, it will be designated as a conservation easement. I (will) personally manage the land until I die, and then it is put into the ownership and management of the SLT and forever protected from private sale.” Under Kelley’s care, the land has experienced a rebirth. the south. Kelley has developed and now maintains groomed hiking trails throughout. The trails in the Zimmerman Wetland Bird Habitat (named after famed artist William H. Zimmerman) have artwork displayed by several local stone and metal artists. Kelley has also planted native prairie grasses and wildflowers throughout the area. His purpose: to respect and care for the land, to improve the area for local wildlife and, in turn, to also enhance it for the destination’s human guests. Stone Head now offers a wealth of beauty, from its many flowers and trees to the sculptures by local artists that dot the landscape. Add to that the beautiful vistas and views, as well as the quiet spots, like the “Spirit Trail” and its “Spirit Shrine,” where guests are encouraged to sit and ponder life and loved ones, both past and present. Kelley, an avid birdwatcher and a member of the small birding group, the Zimmerman Wetlanders, says visitors can also see any number of winged creatures, like bald eagles, warblers and hundreds of sparrows, including several rare forms of the species, as well as an array of land dwellers.

A recently retired orthodontist, Kelley hopes he’ll now have more time to maintain the acres and build upon what he’s already accomplished. A new overlook in the Zimmerman Habitat is planned, along with the installation of a small amphitheater for pond life observation, several boardwalks, a footbridge and a Japaneseinspired teahouse. All in all, he hopes to find more ways to make Stone Head inviting to guests, while further protecting the land. The preserve, Kelley hopes, will become a place that allows the “study of the world about us,” he explains. “The whole idea of the nature preserve is really to give people a chance to gain knowledge of the environment. If you study what’s there, you have a greater appreciation for it … and with appreciation comes love.” As for all his efforts, Kelley believes that everyone should “do their part and try and leave the world a better place,” he says. “I like to think this is my way of fulfilling my small part.” For more history of the house and of the Stone Head, visit www.houseatstonehead.com.
