Our burritos are big, no question. But you need a lot of room when you’re talking lovingly made carnitas, slow-simmered pinto beans seasoned with oregano and cumin and garlic, hand-mashed guac, salsas made with fresh ingredients and crisp romaine lettuce. Heck, even that sentence was big. And that’s before the cheese and sour cream.

Angelina Jolie told PEOPLE’s Mary Green (above) that their small, intimate celebration was “very much a family affair. . . . The children chose their roles and their clothes.”

W

hen news leaked last week that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt had gotten married, I had two thoughts: First, it’s amazing they managed to keep it a secret. Second, I can’t wait to see the photos. Well, the wait is over. In this issue, Brad and Angelina share their wedding album exclusively with People’s audience (in conjunction with HELLO! magazine internationally). Of course this isn’t the first time People has had a Brad and PEOPLE NOW host Jeremy Parsons (right) chats with John Stamos.

Angelina exclusive, and for that, a great deal of credit goes to People’s Deputy East Coast News Editor, Mary Green, who has frequently interviewed Angelina—in good times and bad—and I’m sure Angelina, like everyone, appreciates Mary’s integrity, compassion and unfailingly cheerful vibe. The wedding, as you’ll see, was a warm and unpretentious but incredibly chic affair in which their six kids all played important roles; Italian designer Luigi Massi even incorporated the chil-

dren’s drawings into Angelina’s gown. The photographs in Brad and Angelina’s wedding album provide a beautiful, intimate look at one of the most fascinating families on the planet. I couldn’t be more grateful or proud to bring them to you. SPEAKING OF THINGS we’re proud of:

SINGLE AND MOVING ON BY STEVE HELLING

Britney Spears may have been nursing a newly broken heart when she stepped onto the stage on Aug. 28, but she definitely didn’t show it. “She was really amazing,” concertgoer Katie Woodhams says of the singer’s performance at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. “She was giving it everything she had. She thought he was great with her boys [Preston, 9, and Jayden, 8, her kids with ex-husband Kevin Federline] and wanted to have another baby with him.” But after Spears’s father, Jamie, informed her that a video proving Lucado’s infidelity was being shopped around, she ended things immediately. “She trusted David,” says the insider. “She can’t believe that he was not being loyal.” (Lucado did not respond to requests for comment.) But not everyone was as blindsided. “He has a history of sneaking around,” says a source close to Lucado. “He would go out at night a lot without her.” From the beginning, some PEOPLE September 15, 2014

of Spears’s family had their reservations about the Virginia-bred Lucado. “Jamie was very suspicious of David’s intentions,” the insider says. “Clearly his initial instinct was right. Everyone is upset at David.” But up until their split, the couple appeared to be heading for the altar. Last September she accompanied him to his sister’s wedding in Virginia. Spears and Lucado’s moms “seemed comfortable with each other,” an onlooker told People at the time. He returned the gesture in March when he traveled with her to New Orleans for the nuptials of Spears’s little sister Jamie Lynn, 23. Despite their blended lives, those close to the star say a reunion will never happen. “There is no way she

would ever take him back,” says the insider. “It’s over for good.” For Spears, being single is probably for the best. “Being in a relationship was tough for her because she has so much going on,” a source close to Spears tells People. “She’s been so busy with her show and taking care of her two boys. It’s been a lot.” The source admits Spears is “upset” about how the relationship ended, but says she’s channeling her emotions into work, which includes her Las Vegas run and her upcoming lingerie line the Intimate Britney Spears. “She’s focusing on her show right now,” the source adds. “She’s moving on.” IN HAPPIER TIMES Spears and Lucado (above, in August) began dating in February 2013.

IN THE FIGHT OF HER LIFE

On People.com, we’re keeping you updated on Joan Rivers’s health, but as this issue goes to press, she remains in New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital, since she stopped breathing during a medical procedure on Aug. 28. On the evening before she went into the hospital, I had the privilege of interviewing her at an event for Out @ Time Inc., an organization for the company’s LGBT employees, in New York City. Joan was at her best that night—hilarious, lively, sharp and warm. I’d never seen her in such great spirits, and she even expressed gratitude for her remarkable health at age 81. Despite the take-no-prisoners wit that has made her one of the greatest comics of all time, Joan Rivers is a woman of elegance and compassion. After the event, she went from the Time & Life Building to the West Bank Cafe a few blocks away to try out new material for her stand-up act. She seemed unstoppable. I hope for the sake of her daughter Melissa and the rest of her family that she is. I choose to believe that she always will be. —JESS CAGLE, EDITORIAL DIRECTOR

Just past the two-year anniversary of their engagement, the couple “are doing great,” says a source. They’re just in no rush. “They’re still talking about a wedding, and it will happen eventually,” adds the source. “They’re looking into sunny and warm locations like Hawaii.” And she’s sick of questions about whether she’ll have kids. “I don’t have this sort of checklist of things that have to be done, and if they’re not checked, then I’ve failed some part of my being a woman,” she said on Today before reuniting with Friends pals Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow on Jimmy Kimmel Live (see below). YOUTUBE’S DYNAMIC DUO

Beethoven and Leonardo da Vinci as rap stars? The genre didn’t even exist when they walked the earth, but you wouldn’t know it from watching YouTube’s Epic Rap Battles of History channel. Back in 2010, comedy improv buddies Lloyd Ahlquist, 37, and Peter Shukoff, 35, got the idea to dress up as historical figures and celebrities—and pit them against one another in rap battles. The channel is now one of YouTube’s most popular, with several videos garnering more than 80 million views. “We get to argue for a living,” says Shukoff. “It’s so fun.” Not to mention educational since they thoroughly research their characters’ verbal ammo. “I wasn’t really that good at history in school,” admits Ahlquist. “But when Pete and I did ‘Stalin vs. Rasputin,’ I read a lot of Russian history.” (Need a physics crash course? Watch “Sir Isaac Newton vs. Bill Nye.”) As for their new notoriety, that’s pure icing, says Shukoff: “We’re just happy to do something we love that people enjoy.” —JANINE RAYFORD RUBENSTEIN Comedians Shukoff (left) and Ahlquist debut ERB’s fourth season in November.

CELEBRITY PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

JUST SAY NO TO

NAKED SELFIES

There is only one way to make sure your privates remain that way: Don’t put them in front of a camera.* It’s a painful lesson that Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and others learned when pics of each woman in her birthday suit hit the Internet. The actresses claimed a violation of privacy—rightly so—and blamed a hacker who grabbed them off the “cloud.” Problem is, a “cloud” provides about as much protection as the rhythm method. (After all, according to oxforddictionaries.com, a cloud is “a visible mass of condensed water vapor floating in the atmosphere.” Not exactly Fort Knox.) But like a cloud, the scandal should pass quickly: Lawrence will likely make a very clever joke about it on a talk show, and Upton will go back to doing whatever it is that Upton does, which—as far as we can tell—involves taking almost-naked pictures Kate for magazine covers. Boston Marathon bombing survivor James Costello weds the nurse who cared for him

Costello and D’Agostino exchange vows on Aug. 23 (inset, on April 15, 2013).

There’s a happy ending for Boston Marathon bombing survivor James Costello, who married rehab nurse Krista D’Agostino Aug. 23. The couple, both 31, took their vows at a nautical-themed wedding at the Hyatt Regency Boston in a “fun but intimate affair with plenty of dancing,” says wedding planner Rachael Gross. Costello was standing near the marathon finish line waiting for a friend to complete the race when the bombs went off, killing three and injuring 264. Severely burned on his right arm and leg, he underwent multiple skin grafts at Massachusetts General Hospital and was sent to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital to recover. It was there he met D’Agostino. One thing led to another, and he proposed in December. “April 15 was one of the worst days of my life. I soon wondered why and for what reason this has happened,” he wrote in a Facebook post in December. “I now realize why I was involved in the tragedy. It was to meet my best friend, and the love of my life.” PEOPLE September 15, 2014

PERSONAL STORIES ABOUT GIVING BACK

Katy Perry Inspired by a teacher who took a chance on her, the star is helping kids get a leg up Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to experience the best educational system, because my parents moved around a lot. I was often pulled out of school—even in the middle of the year. I ended up being homeschooled and going to really strange Christian private schools before I left to pursue my dream. But even though I didn’t always have the greatest education, I was influenced by a lot of my music instructors. When I was about 13, there was one woman named Agatha Danoff who gave me Italian-opera vocal lessons at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, Calif. I couldn’t really afford the lessons, but she found a way to give them to me anyway. So I look at partnering with Staples for the Make Roar Happen campaign benefiting DonorsChoose.org as my way of paying it forward. I want to remind people that a small gesture can make a large impact on the very basic materials classrooms need for teachers to help students reach their fullest potential. I have a lot of fans who are in the moment of education in their lives—from kindergarten to college—so this is the greatest opportunity to take advantage of my success and set For more information, go to a positive example. The young homeless man had been sought on an arrest warrant since 2011 after he violated probation stemming from an earlier arrest. He posted $2,500 bail the same night and is expected to appear before a judge in mid-September. Helt, who moved to Los Angeles to become a model and ended up living on the streets, gained notoriety after he accepted the singer’s award for Video of the Year on her behalf to raise awareness about homeless youth.

Seinfeld actor Stephen Lee died of a heart attack in his Los Angeles apartment on Aug. 14. He was 58. His actress friend Lisa Pescia confirmed his death to The Hollywood Reporter on Aug. 27. Boardwalk Empire

When booze again flows legally in America, will Steve Buscemi’s Nucky still be lucky? TV DRAMA As the 1920s saga moves into the Depression for its fifth, final season, the rival gangsters continue to winnow themselves down with the occasional bloodbath. But Atlantic City bootlegger Nucky Thompson (Buscemi) has an eye toward the end of Prohibition. He’s setting himself up as a legit rum importer. However, after running into Joseph Kennedy, father of the future President, he laments that he has none of the Bostonian’s swagger or connections. This sourness is the enduring if paradoxical appeal of Buscemi’s performance. He may not have the heft of a James Gandolfini, but his biting displeasure with the world is original and real. We get flashbacks into Nucky’s childhood, but Buscemi has already done all the work: One look at his eyes tells you everything about Nucky’s past, present—and future. (HBO, Sept. 7, 9 p.m.)

Love Is Strange

A gay couple endure an unwanted split MOVIE DRAMA Alfred Molina and John Lithgow are George and Ben, a Manhattan couple who marry after years together. George is promptly fired from his job at a Catholic school, and the financially strapped pair must sell their apartment. Searching for a new home, they split up, bunking with friends and relatives. Everyone’s nerves are soon fried. This is a gentle but meticulously observed story, not so much about love as the frayed fondness that replaces it over time. The end, though, quietly stuns us with the real thing. In an excellent cast, Lithgow is the standout as a man delicately out of sync with his new environment. (R)

From the smooth, sensual strains of the title track, “Goddess,” to the luscious “Beggin for Thread,” her silky, lush vocals proclaim her presence as a force to bow down to (and play on repeat). They Do! The world’s most glamorous couple (and six delighted kids) share exclusive wedding photos with PEOPLE

Family Joy The Jolie-Pitts celebrate at their French home, Ch창teau Miraval, on Aug. 23, 2014. Clockwise from left: Jolie and Vivienne, 6; Maddox, 13; Zahara, 9; Pitt and Pax, 10; Knox,6; and Shiloh, 8.

Unscripted Moment Among the day’s memorable highlights: a dropped wedding band, which Shiloh and Knox (in hats of their choosing) promptly retrieved.

T

here was no string quartet, no soaring chorus, no star soloist. As Angelina Jolie prepared to walk down the aisle on the arms of her oldest sons, 13-year-old Maddox and 10-year-old Pax, the only sound filling the ancient stone chapel was charmingly lo-fi: a joyful noise from the 20 assembled guests and the groom himself, Brad Pitt. “There was no music, so

family and friends hummed ‘Here Comes the Bride,’” Jolie tells People of the intimate Aug. 23 ceremony on the grounds of Château Miraval, the couple’s estate in Correns, France. In a nod to tradition, Pitt only got his first glimpse of Jolie—dazzling in a classic white gown with a you’ve-never-seenanything-like-this twist—as she made her entrance. “Brad didn’t see the dress until the moment of the wedding,” she says. Then, with a California judge officiating the nondenominational civil ceremony, the couple exchanged heartfelt words penned for the occasion by

their six kids. “The children wrote vows and asked us to make promises to each other,” says Jolie. “It was very sweet what they came up with.” This is what “I do” looks like for the planet’s most-talked-about couple: part royal grandeur (that château!), part perfectly imperfect chaos (never trust elementary schoolers with a wedding ring) and wholly a reflection of the bride and groom’s half dozen young wedding planners: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, 9, Shiloh, 8, and 6-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. Pax—to Jolie’s gown and veil, designed by Atelier Versace master tailor Luigi Massi and hand-sewn with dozens of the children’s drawings, the entire affair unfolded at the intersection of A-list and Pinterest. “It was important to us that the day was relaxed and full of laughter,” Pitt, 50, and Jolie, 39, tell People. “It was such a special day to share with our children and a very happy time for our family.”

Of course, there was never any doubt that the “simple, personal” festivities would center on the couple’s six-pack of distinctive personalities. “It’s going to be Disney or paintball—one or the other!” Jolie told People in May of her kids’ “verging on hysterical” ideas for the wedding. More than two years in the making—ever since Pitt proposed to Jolie, at their children’s urging, in spring 2012—the celebration offered each child the opportunity to play his or her own unique part. “The children chose their roles and their clothes,” says Jolie. For Maddox and Pax that meant walking down the aisle with Mom—and lending a tie to Dad, who forgot to pack his own. Flower girls Zahara, in a dress designed by family friend Adama Kebe, and Viv, in a dress from her closet, opted to throw petals gathered from the family’s 1,200-acre estate. As for ring bearers Knox and Shiloh, the day called for whimsical hats of their choosing— and, yes, a briefly dropped wedding band, prompting giggles from the guests, a group that included Pitt’s parents, Bill and Jane, his brother and sister Doug and Julie, Jolie’s brother James Haven, designer Massi and jeweler Robert Procop. The informal ceremony, which kicked off around 11:30 a.m., offered emotional moments, too: Pitt had a dedication to Jolie’s beloved mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who died of ovarian cancer in 2007, engraved on a stone in the chapel where they exchanged vows. Both Jolie and Haven, 41, wore mementos to honor her as well: For Jolie, “a little flower ring that was hers” worn on her index finger, she says, “and Jamie wore an angel pin from her jewelry box.” Procop, who also designed Jolie’s Art Deco-

style engagement ring along with Pitt, created the Oscar-winning couple’s wedding bands. Pitt and Jolie started planning the bands’ design when they first got engaged, says Procop. “This is a couple who continue to think about how to surprise each other in gifts of love that all have meaning,” he says. “If every couple was like this, it would be a beautiful world.” Jolie’s earrings and Pitt’s suit were both pulled from their own existing wardrobes. But perhaps no single creation better captured the spirit of the day than Jolie’s one-of-a-kind dress. Having previously shared the children’s yearning to see her in a quintessential wedding gown à la Princess Fiona in Shrek, the star worked closely with longtime friend Massi. “Luigi is like family to me, and I couldn’t imagine anyone else making this dress,” says the actress, who devised the idea of putting her kids’ creativity on full display, from drawings of the family to pictures of planes, motorbikes, flowers and the words “ma famille” (French for “my family”). The result? Outrageously chic and endearingly sweet. (And quite possibly the world’s first example of haute couture-meets-fridge art . . . réfrigérature?) “He knows and cares for the children, and it was great fun putting it together,” says Jolie, who has worn Atelier Versace designs to the Golden Globes and Oscars (including her famous leg-baring gown in 2012). For Massi the opportunity to incorporate the work of the family’s young artists was particularly meaningful. “I was honored to be asked to make the dress,” he says. “We have been friends and worked together over a decade. I am grateful to the Versace family for the trust in me to execute the designs for Angelina.”

At the conclusion of the ceremony,

guests hummed Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” and repaired to the countryside surrounding the moated 35-room main house, where the couple first settled in 2008 just before welcoming the twins. Seated in the midst of spectacular scenery—including pine forests, olive groves, terraced hillside 70

vineyards and a private lake—the wedding party enjoyed a relaxed, alfresco reception. On the menu for the casual picnic à l’Américain: kid-friendly, BBQstyle fare, washed down with awardwinning Miraval rosé from the couple’s vineyards and Jolie’s beverage of choice, Bosnian rose petal juice. (It’s a sweet drink made from brewed rose petals, strained and blended with simple syrup.) Dessert included Pax’s cake along with several flavors of sorbet and chocolate and vanilla ice cream. Although they have a history of exchanging romantic gifts—often weaving in their children’s original artwork, a hint of things to come with the dress—

the couple chose not to do so for this occasion. The best part of the entire affair? “Seeing how excited the children were,” says Jolie, who has often spoken of the deepening bond she experienced with Pitt through parenthood. It has been a remarkable journey for the two superstars: Jolie, the Los Angelesreared daughter of Bertrand and actor Jon Voight, and Pitt, one of three children raised in Springfield, Mo., by Bill and Jane. Costars in 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the pair later found a shared joy in growing a family together—and growing and growing. “All your memories are based on time together, so you don’t have separate experiences,” Jolie told People in May. “You have this person you live with who really knows you, and you know them so well. You’re not lovers or boyfriend and girlfriend as much as you are a family.” There have been challenges, too, including Jolie’s double mastectomy in

2013, with Pitt by her side through the ordeal. “We’ve been through so much,” Jolie told People. “We’ve gotten a lot closer, which I think naturally happens with raising a family together.”

The couple pulled off the top-secret

wedding in part by holding it at their home away from home. With its Romanesque architecture and sprawling grounds, Miraval provided an ideal setting for their dream day. Pitt, a passionate architecture and design buff, has taken a sharp interest in remodeling the estate to suit his modern aesthetic. Over the years, he has personally chosen everything from fabrics to furnishings in Paris and at various art fairs. Most recently, during a 10-day visit in July, the actor quietly saw to certain finishing details. Many of the home’s amenities cater to their active brood, including indoor and outdoor pools, a commercial-quality home theater, a state-of-the-art video game room and vegetable and fruit gardens. “I’m a farmer now,” Pitt recently said of the family’s country life. But they’re also in the business of

The couple fit the wedding into a busy year: Pitt, who won an Oscar as a producer of 2013’s Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave, filmed his WWII drama Fury in England, while in Australia Jolie directed her WWII drama Unbroken. The two stayed connected via old-fashioned love letters. In recent weeks they have prepped for By the Sea, a drama Jolie wrote “a few years ago for Brad and me” and will direct, she told People. “It’s something really small and experimental.” Just five days after the ceremony, Pitt was at work promoting Fury in London, followed by a commercial shoot in New

Pitt has since joined her there, and the pair will begin shooting soon. “We are working together on a drama about grief and finding a way through a difficult marriage,” Jolie says of the film, in which they play a couple who become obsessed with their neighbors, one played by French actress Mélanie Laurent. “We find it very funny that it’s our honeymoon.” It’s work, yes, but it’s play too—especially now that the couple who have long talked of “growing old” together have made it official. Does married life feel any different so far? “Not different,” says Jolie, “just very content.” With Peter Mikelbank in Paris

ynn-Holly Johnson was just 20 years old when she jumped and spun her way into America’s heart as blind figure skater Alexis Winston in the 1978 tearjerker Ice Castles. “We forgot about the flowers,” her boyfriend Nick (played by Robby Benson) declares in the movie’s finale when Alexis, after performing a flawless routine, betrays her sightlessness because she cannot pick up roses tossed on the ice. That sudsy scene was Johnson’s biggest Hollywood moment. But in real life she’s faced equally dramatic adversity. In 2010 she suffered a near-fatal stroke. After years of rehabbing her damaged brain, the former competitive figure skater and Golden Globe nominee has become an activist, hoping to educate others about the little-known risk factor that put her in danger. Now, says Johnson, 55, “I’m just happy to be alive.” But the road back hasn’t been easy.

probably caused by three clots, which Dr. David Brown, director of the Hoag Stroke Program in Orange County, Calif., says most likely reached her brain through a tiny hole in Johnson’s heart (known as a patent foramen ovale, or PFO). When she regained consciousness, Johnson was asked what year it was; “1968,” she said. Ten days later she left the hospital, suddenly robbed of her ability to navigate the world. Johnson spent hours each day in rehab with other stroke victims, struggling to regain basic cognitive function. “I was crying every day, always on edge,” recalls Johnson, who would get lost driving her two kids, KelOn a recent visit to her Newport Beach, len and Jansie (now 16 and 13), to Calif., home, Johnson halts mid- school and doctors’ appointments. You’re kidding me,’ ” says the 70-year-old Rolling Stones guitarist, who is best known for the sordid tales of drugs, arrests and life on the road that he told in his bestselling memoir Life. But this time Richards delivers a surprisingly sweeter story: His new book Gus & Me (out Sept. 9) is a tribute to his grandfather Gus, who gave him his first guitar around age 9. “I’ve always wanted to pay homage to Gus. He set me on my way,” says the rocker, who himself is Grandpa to five—Ella, 18, Orson, 14,

KEITH For me, the idea of grandparents zoomed into my consciousness at about age 5. My mom would take me to visit Gus, her father. Suddenly my grandfather says to my mother, “Go get your daddy’s slippers.” I am gobsmacked! Nobody tells my mother what to do. To me this was like, “Whoa, Granddad is a special position!” But this book wasn’t my idea. It filtered through my publishers, and at the same time I was expecting my fifth grandchild. It seemed appropriate with the two things coinciding. THEODORA And he tossed it to me. We were at dinner, and Dad was like, “I have a surprise for you.” I read the first few lines and realized he was asking me to do the book. I’ve always loved to draw, but I’ve never put it out there. KEITH I talked her into it. But it was a perfect match. It felt right. THEODORA Alexandra [her sister, 28] and I were right before this age where every kid has an iPad or iPhone. Our relationship was completely welded. From then on it was talks about God, marriage, babies. We could talk about everything for hours. A WORD OF WARNING: IF YOU’RE ATTEMPTING TO GO FOR A WALK WITH MEREDITH VIEIRA, ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME It’s a three-block stroll to Vieira’s office from the Rockefeller Center rooftop where she’s just done a photo shoot. But she’s barely made it 10 yards before the first fan approaches her. Vieira responds by embracing her like an old friend. Mothers with small children follow. “Meredith, I just have to tell you how much I love you,” another fan says. “Oh, honey, come here!” she responds, offering a hug. Twenty minutes and 15 hugs later, Vieira has finally made it to her office next to the set for her upcoming daytime talk show, The Meredith Vieira Show, debuting Sept. 8. (Check local listings for times.) If these women on the street are any indication, Vieira is in for a warm response from viewers. That doesn’t mean she’s feeling overconfident. “There’s a lot riding on this,” she admits. “It’s the first time the success or failure of something is all on me.” True, she doesn’t have four other women with her, as she did on The View, or cohost Matt Lauer, as she did during her nearly five-year stint on the Today show. Yet Vieira, 60, is doing what she has always done best: taking a risk. “My decisions have always been gut-driven,” she admits. “It may not be the smartest thing, but it’s worked for me.” Helping matters is the support of her husband of 28 years, Richard Cohen, 66, and their three children, Ben, 25, Gabe, 23, and Lily, 21. “They all said to me, ‘Don’t not take the show because you’re afraid.’ Ben said, ‘You always tell us to challenge ourselves; the same goes for you.’ ” While she doesn’t have to worry about the sort of office politics that recently caused turmoil on the Today set—“My heart was broken for them. They were hurting. I just wanted to tell them that people still loved them,” Vieira says—that doesn’t mean fear isn’t a factor. “I’m scared before every show,” she says. “I jump into the deep end time and time again, and I’m not a good swimmer. But I start to figure out how to dog-paddle, and FAMILY DECISIONS things start to feel okay.” She sat When Vieira left Today in 2011, some down with People’s Kate Coyne assumed it was to care for husband Richard, to talk about the leaps of faith who suffers from MS. “I am legally blind now, that made all the difference. so she drives me places and does things for me when I have trouble, but Meredith is not a caretaker in a traditional way,” says Richard (with, from left, children Ben, Lily and Gabriel, and Vieira, in 2013). So when this new opportunity arose, Richard encouraged her to take it. “They were very supportive,” Vieira says. “Things might change, but for right now, this is doable.”

1 | My Parents Chose My Education >> My parents putting me in a single-sex school had a great impact on who I am. I attended an all-girls Quaker school in Providence called the Lincoln School. I started there at age 2 and went through to the end. I have three older brothers, but because of this school, suddenly I had a sisterhood that I never would have had otherwise, and an incredible bond was formed. It was right at the beginning of the feminist movement, and we were encouraged to use our minds in a way that was so empowering. From the start we were in uniforms, so it was about what we were doing with our heads, not what we were wearing on our bodies. We were encouraged to be loud in class, debate was a good thing, and all of it made me feel like the strongest person in the world. My parents wanted to raise a very confident daughter, in a culture where women weren’t always embraced that way. They wanted me to reach for the stars and to know that those stars were available to me, even though some of them really weren’t yet—but my parents wanted me to believe I could reach them nonetheless.

2 | I Accepted a Job Even Though I Had No Idea How to Do It COURTESY MEREDITH VIEIRA

GRACE UNDER PRESSURE “All these people signed on for me, for this,” Vieira says of her new series. “I don’t want to blow it for them.”

ment, and somebody from CBS Radio came in to critique it. He listened to what I’d recorded and afterward said, “I need to see you after class.” I thought, “Oh Jesus, what did I do wrong?” I wasn’t doing that great to begin with—it was lucky I was going to graduate—and so I went out into the hall and he said, “You have a huge future. I want you to intern at WEEI,” a Boston radio sta94

tion. The smartest thing I did was to say, “Okay!” And I wasn’t even interested in journalism! But I still said yes. He said, “Come prepared to rip wires.” So on my first day I showed up in overalls, because I had no idea he meant ripping wire copy from the Associated Press, Reuters and UPI that came in over teletype machines—I thought he meant actually ripping wires out of a wall. So I was in overalls, and everyone looked at him like, “Oh my goodness, who did you just hire?” I mean, they were cute overalls, but still.

3 | I Left a Job Even Though I Loved It >> As many people know, when I was a correspondent at 60 Minutes and pregnant with Gabe, my second child, the show’s chief, Don Hewitt, told me I had to come back to work full-time soon after I gave birth. And so I said no to Don Hewitt. When confronted with either “You stay here full-time or you’re out of here,” I said, “I’m not staying here,” and that night I slept like a baby—even

though 60 Minutes was the only job I had truly coveted in this business. But I knew it was the right decision. It was like this weight had been lifted off me. I had become this poster child, not by choice, for “You Can Have It All,” and no matter how hard I tried, I came to realize, “No, you can’t.” Or at least, I couldn’t. And I’m so glad, because it led me in a whole other direction. I had rarely watched daytime television because I was working, and so when The View came along, I didn’t consider it at first because I thought, “I don’t even know what to do!” But I went to the audition, and I was embarrassed to admit after all those years of “serious journalism” that I really enjoyed it, that I enjoyed getting to have an opinion! And then I got the job, which, obviously, ultimately led to Today, which led to where I am now. Because I said no to Don, it made me open myself up to other possibilities. I’d been moving in a straight line, totally linear, and mecca was 60 Minutes. Well, mecca turned out to be . . . meh. For me, anyway. It didn’t work with my life, and so I had to veer in another direction.

5 | The Choice My Son Wishes I’d Made Differently >> When I was pregnant with Ben, I did a profile on Ben & Jerry’s. I drove up to their headquarters in Vermont, and Ben and Jerry, really nice guys, asked me, “Do you have names for the baby?” and

‘Fear can be motivating. I’m scared before every show, and the day that I’m not is the day I hang it up’

I said, “Actually, if it’s a boy, we’re naming him Ben, after his grandfather.” And Ben said, “Then we’re giving him a lifetime supply of ice cream!” I said, “I’m so sorry, but I’m a journalist—I can’t accept that.” And to this day my son Ben will say, “You could have said yes! No one would have known!” I can just see him lying on a therapist’s couch someday saying, “It all started when my mother wouldn’t take that ice cream. . . .”

4 | My Husband Chose to Tease Me >> I’ve been married for 28 years, and I would marry my husband again tomorrow. The decision I made with him was more “You’re a jerk, and I’m going to marry you.” Like with saying no to Don Hewitt, I just knew it was right. To this day I can’t put my finger on it: There was just something about him. It was maybe the way he teased me—it was obnoxious, but there was something there. I was able to realize, “He’s teasing me because I think he kind of likes me.” And I loved his wit—he wore it on his sleeve—and hey, I loved the way he looked. I was working in CBS’s Midwest bureau in Chicago the first time I met him. He was a producer working with Lesley Stahl, and he came in carrying her bags, the poor guy, and there was something to be said for that too. And in the end I just went with it. Once that happened, everything great that came with it followed right along.

WOMAN OF THE PEOPLE “People feel like they know me from being on television all these years,” says Vieira. “And I sort of feel like I do know these people too.”

“Everybody is tired of seeing that fingerwagging wife character,” says Wilson, 33. “Annie and Jake are two peas in a pod.”

Your husband, David Caspe, is a writer on Marry Me and based your sitcom character Annie on you. Are you clones? Annie’s anger problem is an exaggeration! If not, I’m in trouble. And she has two gay dads, which I just think would be my perfect parental unit. Were any plot lines stolen from your own relationship? I had an inkling David was going to propose, and I suffered through two vacations with nothing! I kept getting my nails done. I didn’t do full hair and makeup like Annie does, but I did do a nice blow-out. What’s it like having both your onscreen husband and your real husband on-set? It’s definitely odd, but in the best way. [On-set], my onscreen husband Ken Marino and I spend the most time together. He’s one of the funniest guys on the planet. Do you and David take work home with you? It’s rare to get to work with your husband, but it’s really special that we get to collaborate. I think we only talk about it 23 hours a day!

When we last saw D.C. power player Olivia Pope, she broke up with her lover, the President, and blew up her big career to start a new life with conflicted hit man Jake (Scott Foley). Are you still recovering from the finale? KERRY: It was really dark. Olivia became unraveled. Everyone’s understanding of her is as this fierce, powerful, determined woman. And all of those things were stripped away from her. Okay, we’re dying here. What’s going to happen this season? KERRY: At the end of season 3, she became the old Olivia, but she fixed her own personal life by giving it all up. Sometimes people have to break down to break through, so in season 4 we’ll see a breakthrough. Shonda Rhimes, the show’s creator, is also launching How to Get Away with Murder this fall. Are you afraid of losing her attention? KERRY: She’s able to do it all. I’m just excited that she gets to rule Thursday nights!

IF YOU PURCHASED CERTAIN GLUCOSAMINE AND CHONDROITIN PRODUCTS YOU COULD RECEIVE MONEY FROM A CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT

TV’S

HOTTEST SITCOM!

A class action settlement has been preliminarily approved by the Court in Quinn et al. v. Walgreen Co., Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Supervalu, Inc., and Perrigo Company of South Carolina, Inc., Case No. 7:12-cv-8187 VB (U.S. District Court, S.D.N.Y.) (the “Action”). Your rights may be affected by this proposed settlement.

WHAT THE ACTION IS ABOUT Plaintiffs claim retailers including Walgreens and Wal-Mart sold Perrigo-manufactured products containing glucosamine and/or chondroitin (the “Covered Products”) using labels that misleadingly stated that the products would help “rebuild cartilage,” “lubricate joints,” and “improve joint comfort” when they do not. Defendants deny they violated the law and believe that the products provide the benefits stated on the labels. Perrigo has agreed to provide $2.8 million (the “Fund”) to settle the claims in order to avoid the cost, disruption and risk of continued litigation. The Fund will pay eligible claims, notice and administration costs as well as attorneys’ fees, expenses and plaintiff incentive awards. The Class includes U.S. residents who purchased for personal use, and not resale or distribution, a Covered Product between November 1, 2005 and August 1, 2014. This is only a summary. Visit the website below, or call (844) 322-8236 for a complete list of Covered Products and retailers.

DEADLY VACATION Heather and Schaefer (above), shortly after their arrest on Aug. 13, have reportedly refused to cooperate with Bali investigators. “She’s pretty shaken up,” says attorney Michael Elkin of his client, who stayed at the St. Regis Bali Resort (right) with her mom and Schaefer.

tumultuous relationship with Heather,” says a family friend. “But she never gave up hope.” In the weeks before their Bali trip, Chicago police say that Heather and boyfriend Schaefer were arrested for disorderly conduct while partying at a suite in the city’s Conrad Hotel after von WieseMack reported that her daughter had taken her credit card to pay for the room. Friends of Schaefer warned the aspiring rapper to “stay away” from Heather. “One minute she could be okay” says Schaefer’s pal Paris Reese, “and the next she would snap.” One of Schaefer’s last Facebook posts before departing to Bali read: “Leaving Aug 4th for Indonesia might not come backkkk [sic].”

Although the couple have so far refused

to talk to investigators, Schaefer’s words could prove prophetic. “We have enough evidence, including CCTV [closed-circuit TV] and fingerprints,” Colonel Djoko Hari Utomo, chief of police in Bali’s Denpasar district, told

reporters. “And I am inclined to charge them with premeditated murder.” If convicted, the couple, who at press time have yet to be charged with any crime, could ultimately face death by firing squad. Heather’s Chicago-based attorney Michael Elkin insists his client “is innocent of committing murder.” The mother and daughter “were fighting like cats and dogs,” Elkin admits. “But they were close.”

Police have said that security camera footage reveals Heather and Schaefer arguing with von Wiese-Mack in the hotel lobby just hours before her death. The next morning, the authorities claim the pair—who reportedly told them they were ambushed at the hotel by an armed gang—loaded the suitcase containing von Wiese-Mack’s body into the taxi, then were videoed fleeing from a back entrance of the hotel. “Sheila loved her daughter very much,” von Wiese-Mack’s brother William said in a statement, “and was always a very . . . loving mother.” In the days since Heather’s and Shaefer’s arrest, a steady stream of disturbing revelations about the couple has made headlines—including news that Heather is two months pregnant. While questions remain unanswered, those who knew the family best are left grappling with their grief. “Sheila worked so hard to keep that relationship with Heather going,” says former neighbor Allen Parchem. “And the result turned out to be tragic.”

1. Wash chicken and pat dry. Combine kosher salt and 11⁄2 tsp. pepper in a large bowl. Add chicken pieces and toss to coat. Cover and chill 8 to 24 hours. 2. Whisk together milk, eggs and hot sauce in a large bowl; set aside. 3. Combine flour and 2 tsp. sea salt in a separate large bowl. Dip 1 chicken quarter in flour mixture, then egg mixture and again in flour mixture. Shake off excess after each step. Repeat procedure with remaining chicken. 4. Heat oil in a 6- to 8-quart Dutch oven to 350°. Set a wire rack on top of a rimmed baking sheet. 5. Fry chicken, in batches, 15 to 17 minutes for breast quarters and 18 to 20 minutes for leg quarters, or until crisp and dark golden brown and a thermometer inserted into thickest part of chicken registers 165°, turning chicken during last 5 minutes of frying for even browning, if necessary. Temperature will drop after chicken pieces are added to oil. Adjust temperature during frying, as necessary, to maintain a steady temperature of 325°. 6. Remove chicken from hot oil; drain on prepared rack. Carefully ladle 1⁄2 cup frying oil into a medium heatproof bowl. Whisk in red pepper, next 3 ingredients and remaining pepper and sea salt. Baste hot fried chicken with spiced oil. Serve immediately. Makes: 4 servings Prep time: 25 minutes, plus chilling Cook time: 35 minutes

lifestyle site, Preserve, can attest. And as the face of Gucci Première eau de toilette, she’s especially particular about scents. Topping her list of best-ever smells? “Coming from California, I like the scent of the sequoias and the ocean,” she tells People. “I’m pretty addicted to Le Labo candles. And I love the smell of my mom’s skin. However, the smell of fresh brownies or cookies wins over my mom’s scent!” SHE ALSO LOVES the “elusive, powerful” orange blossom and leather-spiked aroma of the Gucci Première fragrance, which complements her unique red carpet style. “Since I don’t use a stylist, I’ll look at the runway shows on Style.com. I’ll call in a rack, and then I pick from that.” Her off-duty ensembles are also ever-changing. “Every day it’s different. I’ll wear a motorcycle jacket, jeans and cool boots; when I’m feeling feminine, I’ll wear a flowy dress. I think the best thing to do is whatever makes you feel the most comfortable, the most confident. Everyone has their own version of that.”

One Last Thing

Lenny Kravitz

The four-time Grammy winner, 50, releases his next album, Strut, on Sept. 23 Last dream I had It sounds really ridiculous, but I was somewhere with Jennifer Lawrence. We were hanging out with a bunch of people, and she was standing next to me. I texted her when I woke up. But I didn’t tell her about the dream!

Last time I laughed out loud I’m around a lot of funny, interesting people, and I laugh out loud every day. That’s essential. Mostly at myself. Like right now I’m in rehearsals with my band, and things get really funny and I just crack myself up.

Last time I was impressed My cousin, who’s staying with me, is going through a very hard life moment, dealing with a serious disease, and she’s handling it with such grace and strength and faith. She’s blowing me away right now.

Last time I splurged I redid the top floor of my house in Paris. That would be all kinds of things. Furniture, wallpaper, lighting, lots of stuff. I didn’t feel like I got it right the first time.

Last time I cried At my birthday [in May]. So many people were there, people that really matter to me. My daughter [Zoë Kravitz] and her mom [Lisa Bonet] and all my good friends and cousins and family. Just people who really matter to me. They showed me a lot of love. Reported by Tara Fowler
