MADE IN GUIMARÃES LAVADOURO 2
SALA DE ESTAR PARA lAVAR Lavadouro advém de espaço para lavar. Aqui, não só. Lavadouro é lavar, mas também descer, sentar e estar. Um tanque lava e concentra a água como elemento de contemplação. O outro é escavado e tornado na “sala de estar”. O Cheio e o vazio. O vazio escavado, “descido”. O dentro e o fora do tanque. Com materialidades diferentes: o dentro é intimista , espaço forrado/envolvido a madeira. A Luz acompanha a lógica da utilização do espaço. Rasgos pequenos, cobertura porosa ao longo do tanque com água. Efeitos de luz que interagem com a água, tornando-a contemplativa. Mas que protege o espaço usado como lavadouro. Já, a “sala de estar” é marcada por um maior vão de luz e alguns poros de luz nos limites da cobertura que permitem, a quem passe em torno e fora do lavadouro, espreitar. Cria relações visuais entre o espaço debaixo da cobertura e fora dela.

UMA ENTRADA NA CIDADE AN ENTRANCE IN THE CITY
Prof. Sofia Morgado - Faculdade de Arquitectura, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa. Prof. Sofia Morgado - Architecture School, Techinal University of Lisbon. Start point: the Metropolitan Square. For the questions of context, the need arises the understanding and study of city’s doorways, as entrances. The study comprised different time periods, as well as poetic and symbolic dimension, to get a reflection on the current city. What’s the dimension of the city’s doorways, today. The place: strong industrial pass. Nowadays, remains the industrial landscape with an evident relation with the river. “At door who will come knocking? In an open door to enter A closed door a den A world knocks the other side of the my door.” Pierre Albert – Birot Drowning in the fossils of the past, this area is revealed as ‘historic city’ (brown) confronted with the new dinamics of the current city. The ‘contemporary city’ (gray). It becomes necessary to give a new sense and dignity to the place. Meaning and identity before strong marks of a pass. “But the one who opens a door and the one who closes it, will be the same?” Gaston Bachelard If in the past the city’s doorway were retracted a singular architectural element, extremely physical, nowadays reflect the reverse. Before, the built-up. After, a void. Over time, the limits of the city were diluted to become it entrances more as voids, opening the city to the exterior. The element becomes a pause. A void. An exception. There, represents the pause between two ambients. The passage among the ‘historic’ urban context and the ‘contemporary’ urban context, characteristic of its surroundings. The spacial transition. An inside and an outside. The own place makes is the marking of the two ambients, throught a slope, a level difference: the land’s level (related to the city) and the river’s level (related to riverine dynamics). As an entrance point, the density’s inversion which is characteristic in the urban renewal, refers to the void - as exception. The public space of reference. Marking strongly this space includes the Industrial Museum of the East Zone of Lisbon. Pretext to emphasize the asleep identity and to spatially and physically connect the two morfologically ‘separated’ spaces. Basically, continuing the city. This public space is simbolically marked by a ‘chimney’ on an urban scale. Is part of the museum as a public space, also. Is the contemplation. And if the door is open in Marvila? After all, what’s the role of the doorways, nowadays?

A maioria dos trabalhos, ao longo do percursos académico, centraram-se em torno da Área Metropolitana de Lisboa. Durante o mestrado, a compreensão mais aprofundada da sua formação e dinâmicas foram essenciais para os trabalhos posteriores. Bem como, para uma evolução profunda acerca da cidade, em geral. Most of the work along the academic courses, was centered around the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon. During the master, a deeper understanding of its formation and dynamics were essential the next exercices. Also for a deep evolution in the thought about the city, in general.

A Zona Oriental de Lisboa THE EAST ZONE OF LISBON

Enfatizar a ligação ao rio, como ponto de chegada desta zona da cidade, através de um corredor longitudinal. Atravessa diferentes espaços, ligando dois espaços públicos de referência: um virado para a cidade. Outro, uma varanda sobre o rio. O corredor é caracterizado por três faixas. Duas são continuidade da cidade, o quotidiano, o presente. Outra é o momento de excepção, com o tratamento do vale como espaço público, a dois níveis. O plano inferior corresponde ao passado, à memória. Restituição dos percursos do núcleo histórico. Soltos, de contemplação ao edifício como ‘escultura’. O plano superior é a ‘alusão’ ao futuro. Continuidade da cidade quotidiana sobre o vale, atravessando-o sob percursos e espaços de paragem, suspensos em varandas. A intersecção destas ‘faixas’ com o corredor resultam em rótulas, praças de referência. Já a intersecção do vale com o corredor resulta numa pausa. O jardim vertical. Marca a transição entre os diferentes lados do vale e do corredor, resultantes das lógicas distintas da envolvente. A arborização nos dois níveis é mais densa em torno do jardim, de forma a encerrá-lo e criar-lhe uma ambiencia própria.
Emphasize the conection to the river as a city’s arriving point is throught a longitudinal corridor, a hall. Crosses different spaces and connects the two public spaces of reference: one turned to the city and the other a terrace above the river. The corridor is characterized for three lines. Two of them are city continuities: the quotidian, the present. The other is an exception moment with the valley trated as public space in two levels. The inferior level corresponds to the past: the memory.Restituiton of the historic nucleus ways. Loose paths, to comtemplate the building as a sculpture. The superior level is an ‘allusion’ to the future. Quotidian city’s continuity above the valley, cross it with paths and stop spaces, suspended in terraces. The intersection of these ‘lines’ with the corridor results in reference squares. In the other hand, the valley’s intersection with the corridor results in a pause: the Vertical Garden. Is the transition between the two different sides of the valley and the corridor - different logics of the surrounding area. The vegetation in the two levels is more dense around the garden to close it more and creating an own ambience.

The light is adaptated deppending of the function. More light or more dark. Different dimension and quantity of the spans. Light contrasts.
Here the corridor intersects the space as a porous element. Throught interior streets and emphasize light spans. Makes the connection with the surrounding. Is a building in the lower level and a terrace in the part above.

Como se o chรฃo se mexesse e se levantรกsse. Para receber espaรงos, dentro de si. Jogo de terraรงos. As if the ground is moving and rising. To receive spaces within itself. Combination of terraces.

Intenção de prolongar estes muros, fazendo-os passear pelo espaço como referência. O muro vai engordando e estreitando, consoante o que dentro e fora dele acontece. Torna-se tanto espaço público, como convergência de comércio, serviços e ofícios artesanais. Quando alarga contem nele uma função. Quando estreita, serve de passagem entre espaços. Pre-existence: walls in slope. Intention of extend the walls, making them walk throught the space as a reference. The wall is enlarging and narrowing, depending of what happens inside and outside of it. Becames public space as a commerce, services and crafts convergence. When enlarges has a function there. When narrows is a passage between spaces.

Outras funções importantes vão pontuando os aglomerados. Silêncio nas fachadas, ao longo das vias principais. Barulho nas fachadas que se voltam para dentro dos alglomerados, para passagens mais locais.
Another important functions are arising in the residential areas. Silence in the façades along the main streets. Noise in the façades that turns inside the residential areas, to local passages.

Como uma intersecção. Transpor o claustro para o exterior, como espaço público foi a intenção de acentuar esta rótula. Duas ‘linhas’ de espaço de estar que convergem para o momento de pausa. O objecto é diferente nos seus planos - soltos,que permitem passar, entrar e sair. São, naturalmente, opacos. Um deles é translucido, permitindo ver as sombras de quem passa. Reinterpretação do “espaço encerrado” que é o claustro, por definição. Stronge reference in the space: the convent. The space around it makes a transition of two directions. As an intersection. Transposing the cloister to the exterior as a public space was the intention of accentuate this rotule. Two ‘lines’ of public space converge into the moment of pause. The object is diferent in his plans. Loose plans, permits enter and go out. One of them isn’t opaque. Is translucent, to see some shadows of who is passing and create a visual effect on the object. Is the reinterpretation of the ‘closed space’ which is the cloister, as defenition.

Um percurso interior. AN INTERIOR WAY.
Prof. João Pedro Costa - Faculdade de Arquitectura, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa. Prof. João Pedro Costa - Architecture School, Techinal University of Lisbon. O programa consistia em conjugar num pequeno lote, uma galeria expositiva, espaço de trabalho e residência para um artista. Naturalmente, a residência no piso de cima e o atelier em baixo, mais público e acessível. O lote vira-se para um pequeno espaço aberto, o que lhe dá uma noção de paragem. Para acentuar esse momento, e criar uma relação mais forte entre o interior e a rua, surge uma nova direcção que une a rua principal ao espaço para o qual se vira. O interior é marcado por planos verticais que animam o espaço, como prolongamento das paredes em cima e servindo de elemento expositivo. The program consisted in fuse a expositive gallery and a residence for an artist, in a small lot. Naturally, the residence in the higher level as privacy and the work space in the entrance level as a public intention - the gallery. The lot turns it to a small open area, giving it a notion of stopping. To emphasize that moment, and creats a stronger relation between the interior and the street, a new direction arises. Makes the union between the main street and the space where the building is turned. The interior is marked for vertical plans that animate the space as a extension of the upper walls and with the function of expositive element.

Um Abrigo na Cidade, Jardim
Botânico da Ajuda
Como ponto de partida, o muro que separa o jardim em diferentes zonas. O Abrigo adossa-se a ele, prolongando a vista da cidade. O Interior, associado ao privado, é intimista. O Exterior é o publico, naturalmente exposto. De dentro vê-se o exterior. De fora não se vê o interior, pela simetria dos rasgos nas fachadas opostas. Quem espreita de fora, assim, vê o prolongamento do espaço exterior. Jogo de binómios como Luz/Sombra, Claro/ Escuro e Público/Privado.
A Shelter in the City, Botanic Garden of Ajuda, Lisbon. As a start point, a wall which separates the garden in the two diferentes zones. The Shelter is attached to this wall, extending the view from the city, as an urban space. The interior, associated to the private, is intimate. Naturally exposed, the exterior is pubic. From the inside we see the outside. From the outside we can’t see the inside, for the window’s symmetric positions in the facing facades. Who is observing throught the window, then, just see the exteding of exterior space. Combinations of Light/Shade, Light/Dark and Public/Private.

O lugar apresenta dois níveis ligados, apenas, visulamente. Um pertence à cidade mais cosmopolita, aberta e luminosa. O outro relaciona-se com a cidade dita doméstica, mais densa, estreita e em sombra. O pretexto ideal para criar uma ligação física que una os dois espaços e os atravesse em jeito de percurso, dignificando-os como espaços de estar. Para além de reunir uma riqueza em constrastes visuais de claro/ escuro, luz/sombra. Criam-se, assim, relações com a cidade de palco/ plateia, onde a pausa, o ver e o passar definem os movimentos do espaço. O cenário é a própria cidade. Tem a cidade como protagonista.
This place presents two levels, just visually connected. One refers the ‘cosmopolitan city’, open and luminous. The other is related to the ‘domestic city’, dense and aisle, ‘more in shade’. Both are parts of this area of lisbon’s context (historic center). The ideal pretext to create a fisical connetion that makes the union of the two spaces and cross them as a passage, giving them the condition to stay in the space. More, has rich visual contrasts of light/ shadow and light/dark. Relation of stage/audience are created with actions meaning the pause, seeing and passing throught it. The scenary is the city. Has the city as the principal actor.

Unificando dois espaços separados, tornou possível cruzar e permeabilizar a envolvente. Definindo percursos através de enfiamentos visuais, o vazio torna-se definidor do cheio. O espaço tem, aqui, uma vivência a dois níveis. O térreo é animado por comércio e serviços. O superior é espaço público, com gradações de alturas de forma a alcançar a vista sobre a cidade e o rio. O espaço de baixo é percorrível por dentro dos edificios como ruas-corredor, criando efeitos-surpresa. É composto, nas coberturas, por terraços com alturas diferentes para dividir espaços. As paredes inferiores prolongam-se no exterior. Planos verticais. Paredes do espaço público. Animam o espaço. Encerram e abrem outros, virando-os.
Unifies two separated spaces, became possible crosses and permeable the surrounding. Defining ways throught visual axes, the void becames the guide of the built-up elements. The space has life in two levels. The first is animated with commerce and services. The superior is a public space with height gradation, to get the view from the city and the river. The walking in the space below is close to the building’s inside, as ‘corridor-streets’. Creates suprise effects. Is composed, on the coverage, for teraces with diferente heights to divide the space somehow. The walls of the down floor extends over to the exterior. Vertical plans. Walls of the public space. Animate the space. Open some and close others, turning them.
