Liz’ Tips

Feb. 10th to Feb. 17th, 2011

HOMEFINDER WEEKLY Reference Guide Inc. Brockville/Leeds & Grenville 1.877.935.7503 www.homefinderweekly.com

Planning an office

You've overcome the hurdle of Mac vs. IBM. Traded your savings for gigabytes and signed up with an Liz’ Tips Internet provider so you can surf the Web. Now comes the hardest decision of all: Where are you going to By: Liz Quinn of Design’in-Mind Maximum Impact with Minimal Investment put your new personal computer? And on what? Brockville, Ontario

For first-time buyers, it's hard to imagine a computer, which arrived in a box smaller than your TV set, quickly spawning a gang of peripherals plus a cadre of manuals, disks and CD-ROM'S. But they do, and it gets worse.

Because few of us have the luxury of an extra room, many home computers end up stuffed into an unused nook: In the dining room huddled next to the china hutch, in the living room next to the picture window or in the family room with the television, stereo and family dog.

Some people set up their computers on unused tables or desks. Others, sacrificing looks for efficiency, buy ready-to-assemble computer desks at discount stores or a computer work station at an office furniture store. Because there are few homes where sturdy office furniture blends into the decor, most people go to a discount store and buy a table and hutch for their computer, trading comfort and efficiency for looks, said Mary Weimer of Desert Design Interiors in Richland.

"I wonder if most people even realize the importance of having a desk and chair that fits you and your equipment. Choosing home office furniture is more than just aesthetics, its ergonomics," the interior designer said. "People fall into deep caverns when they're working at their computers. A computer minute can stretch, easily, into four hours. If your chair doesn't adjust to fit you, if your monitor isn't where you can see it easily, if the height of the computer keyboard isn't comfortable, you'll end up with neck, back and wrist problems," Weimer said.

Home office furniture prices range from a modest couple of hundred dollars for ready-to-assemble pieces to a couple of thousand dollars for high-quality hardwood furniture. Even at the lower end, there are many different styles and sizes of computer furniture available, said Dean Martin, general manager of Kennewick Computer Co.

And if you do decide to use a table or desk that wasn't designed for computers, there are ways to modify them to accommodate one and still be comfortable. One way is "mount a drawer on the underside to hold the keyboard at a lower height, which is what I did for my desk here at work," Martin

said. "Ideally, you need a desk with adequate room to put out the keyboard and mouse and hold the monitor." Some furniture - often armoires - are built to accommodate entertainment centers and computers. Martin is skeptical of these multiple-use claims and advises potential purchasers to check them out carefully.

"Visualize how all your components will sit. Compare the angle of the monitor as it relates to the keyboard. Some look great until you realize that when you're using your computer, the monitor sits at a right angle to the keyboard. You have to have a neck like an owl to use (it) and be comfortable," he said. "They look good because everything folds up neatly inside, but (the setup) gets annoying after a while."

Computers also have certain physical needs. They need to stay cool and dry year-round and prefer their power smooth and steady, uninterrupted by voltage sags or spikes. A surge protector is an inexpensive solution to a potentially expensive problem. Martin recommends plugging your computer into its own outlet. Something like a microwave oven on the same outlet can cause a voltage sag when it kicks in.

"You don't notice, but your computer does," he said. If possible, choose a circuit free of electric heaters, air conditioners and refrigerators. Anything that suddenly draws a lot of power can deliver a fairly wicked voltage spike to the system and make the computer crash, sending all your hard work into oblivion. Beware of overheating. If you decide to house your computer inside a cupboard or armoire, make sure there are some holes in the back for ventilation. "Overheating is a computer's worst enemy. It can cause hard drive and memory failure," Martin cautioned. Planning tips

Here are some tips for integrating a computer into your home:

-- Measure your space. Know precisely the square footage you have to work with to create your computer work station. Think vertically as well as horizontally. Infrequently used files, supplies or books (computer manuals) can go near the ceiling. To avoid expensive mistakes, also measure the space between windows, doors and heater vents.

613-926-0892 • charles.boyd@sympatico.ca

-- Evaluate your needs before you shop. Be practical. How much leg room do you - and the rest of the family - need? Do you want an adjustable table, or just an adjustable keyboard holder? How much space will the computer, plus the printer, cords and surge protector, discs, manuals and CD-ROMs need?

-- Natural light is best, so position your work center near a window if possible. If more light is needed for paperwork, add an adjustable desk lamp. At night, use soft overhead incandescent lights - not fluorescents.

To reduce eye strain, position the monitor where the screen won't reflect glare from windows, mirrors or other shiny surfaces.

-- Not all desks are built for computers, so if possible get one designed for that purpose. That means a lower height than a standard desk - around 26 inches - with a depth of at least 2 feet to accommodate the computer and keyboard. Many computer desks are designed with a recessed panel to hide the cable tangle, and some have adjustable ledges to house the keyboard and mouse.

-- Shop around. Office supply stores - new and used - are just one source for furniture.

If a computer work station that looks like home, not the office, is important, interior designer Mary Weimer suggests shopping at furniture stores rather than office supply stores. Or work with an interior designer.

"Not only can (interior designers) help with lighting and ergonomics, but we have access to things that are not your standard-looking office furniture," she said. Virtual assistance

-- Keep scale in mind. Generally, office furniture for home use needs to be on a smaller scale than desks for the office. Take photographs of the existing furniture in the room you plan to use and match it up with the furniture you plan to buy.

If there isn't enough room to put your computer and its components where you want, measure the cables. Be sure they're long enough to reach where you have to put them, Martin said.
