Easter Safety for Your Pet

aster Lilies, are as symbolic to Easter, as Poinsettia plants are to Christmas. Did you know, that both are poisonous to our pets? However, lilies edge out their Christmas rival in the deadliness department. Just a small lick while grooming, where a lily’s pollen innocently dropped onto their fur; or a curious nibble of ~any part of the plant~ can lead to complete kidney failure in your cat within hours. If left untreated, even death. I don’t know about you, but I don’t love lilies more than I love my pets! Call your Veterinarian immediately if a pet has sidled up to your lily display! He may ask you to induce vomiting, and/or to give a charcoal tablet to try to absorb some of the poison, while you're on the way to the Emergency Vet's office. There is NO antidote to this. So, without intravenous treatment to flush the kidneys, your pet could very possibly die within a few days. Note, most plants in the 'Lily' family, are equally as poisonous! Examples, but not limited to the Day Lily, Tiger Lily, Peace Lily, Asiatic Lily and Lily of the Valley.

Your pet chicken, may actually give birth in it. :) These plastic grass nests, not only can cause choking in your pets, but may cut the mouth, esophagus and intestines. In addition, it can cause severe abdominal blockages/damage that will require painful, as well as expensive surgery. Why not use shredded or 'scrunched up' coloured tissue paper instead? One dollar buys you 20 sheets of it at the store, plenty, to line safely, all your Easter baskets. Easter is synonymous with chocolate, and by now, most pet lovers know; chocolate can make your pet extremely ill. The dark chocolate varieties with higher theobromine, may literally kill your small dog or cat. The Pet Poison Hotline declares a whopping 200 percent increase of calls at Easter's time, for pets who have been poisoned by eating chocolate. Along with the chocolate calls, come the calls of pets sickened by fermenting dough, certain herb and onion gravies, and too fatty, pieces of meats causing pancreatic attack. Vets speak of emergency surgeries trying to save pets from splintered cooked-bones stuck in the mouth, esophagus or perforated intestines. Some are successful. Some are not... With so many Easter goodies around, please ensure to keep your fur-family safe! Give them their own pet-approved, special holiday treats; far away from the human's temptations. ~
