How to Avoid The Jingle Hells of Holiday Pet Safety

et's face it. In any situation, Celebrations included, the family pet is as safe as his custodian is responsible. So here's how to be responsible and keep that eggnog and figgy-pudding glow, all through the holidays. Tinsel on your fascinating, Christmas tree, can prove very enticing to all pets. However, while playing with it, if your pet even accidentally swallows some, it can prove extremely harmful. According to Poison Control: “Tinsel can result in a severe linear foreign body if ingested. A linear foreign body occurs when your (pet) swallows something stringy which wraps around the base of the tongue or anchors itself in the stomach, rendering it unable to pass through the intestines. As the intestines contract and move, this string or linear foreign body can slowly saw through the tissue, resulting in severe damage to your pet’s intestinal tract.” I hope that knowledge alone, ensures you will keep Tinsel off your tree, or at the very least, keep a very close watch on your pet, when close to it. Real or fake, the Christmas tree can also pose potential dangers. Both real and fake trees often have toxic, chemical flame-retardants, preservatives and (the former) fertilizers sprayed on them. Yum. With a real tree, the pine needles, if ingested, can also perforate his intestines (much like any cooked, left-over bones) causing excruciating pain, or worse.

The water bowl meant for the tree, can be an enticement, as who else drinks water in a bowl on the floor? Yep! Your pet! With its exotic, Forest scent, why wouldn't your pet think it's a treat just for him? If you've added an aspirin to the water, that can make it even more poisonous. Please don't count on your pets understanding, or somehow 'instinctively knowing' that water is not good. They won't be able to tell the difference! Remember, a lot of dogs (even cats) drink straight out of the toilet! Blinking or bubbling lights on trees, extra electrical cords, shiny ornaments and the hooks that hold them, candy canes or other preserved foods, are all potentially deadly traps, your pets will be aching to explore. What's a pet lover, who also loves celebrating the holidays, to do? Be responsible! Unplug all lights when you aren't in the room. Food belongs on the table, not your tree. Put large, nontoxic, unbreakable ornaments on the lower branches and put the heirloom stuff high at the top or better still, arrange these

precious items for viewing, in your China cabinet behind glass doors. Secure items on the tree by tightly wrapping the hooks to the branch, so they won't fall off and injure your pet. Watch for pet kitties, who, in particular, will go for bright ribbons and shiny garland. Tinsel belongs in a bygone era before we knew just how insidiously dangerous it is to children and pets alike! Vacuum up dropped pine needles daily. Use only flameless candles! Assign a responsible party to monitor your pet when he is around the tree and other holiday decorations. Hanukah Celebrators also have potential pet dangers to which they must be mindful! There are shiny, metallic-wrapped chocolate coins, twirling dreidels, wrapped presents, the beautiful, openflamed Menorah, as well as rich and delicious foods aplenty! It's important to know where your pet is at all times, especially when there are open flame candles, chocolate, and small toys to be picked up and swallowed by innocent, inquisitive pets. Keep your pet to his normal routine as much as possible. Make sure he gets his exercise and regular bathroom times. Give him his own yummy and special treats and keep him away from the dinner table, lest kindly, but unknowing relatives may feed him rich scraps and drinks. Keep an extra eye on him around lesserknown relatives and children visitors. He may get stressed out upon hearing their squeals of delight and holiday cheer. You may want to splash a little rum (if you imbibe) into your eggnog to help with the holiday stress. For your pet, the flower essence, 'Rescue Remedy' may help considerably in this situation. Remember, when all the guests have left, and the Holiday hoop-a-la is over; your cherished fur-kid will be right there for you as he's always been. Please don't push him aside during the holidays. Rather, take the time to include him in all the fun, family festivities as the cherished companion he is. Just like a child, he'll need you to guide him and keep him safe If your pets are anything like mine, they lie in wait for Christmas morning with as much exuberance as a child! They stand at the ready, wide-eyed and wagging tails just waiting for the "o.k." to rip open their presents. Well worth the extra precautions we take for them, they warm our hearts each Christmas. Just take a moment...breathe in, out, etc...and repeat: "I Believe....I Believe....I Believe".... Wonderful! Now allow the magic to enter your life... The angels are here and say: “This is a magical time! Not because of a special date on your calendar! But because, this is the time when all around earth, humans emit a much higher vibration, you glow! Your thoughts are lighter, you are happier, you FEEL joy! In doing so, you become who and what you want to be. You FEEL more like Creator, than at any other time. This is why so many ‘miracles’ as you say, happen now.
