If you’re looking for recycled and repurposed decor and gifts, you’ll enjoy the products of Kate, from Kate Dwyer Designs. Local Maker & re-designer, Kate Dwyer, was born and raised in Cornwall Ontario. A Graduate of CCVS, her love of art & creating began at a young age by using leftovers/scraps from jobs around her father’s shop. Repurposing and recycling quickly became her media of choice, using found objects and strongly believing that there is an element of art and design in every single item around us. After high school, Kate moved to Kingston where she briefly studied graphic design, before returning to Cornwall to study as an interior re-designer. When she isn’t creating out of her home based studio you can find her mixing and matching colours at Dulux Paints.

Inspired by antique, vintage and retro styles Kate’s works combine function with fashion. Most pieces start from a find at local thrift stores, garage sales & auctions. Grabbing interesting items to use and having a stockpile of project ideas and materials are vital to her process. Using second hand items gives her the freedom to make mistakes and not have the loss of bigger costing materials, all the while saving pieces from the landfill. Snow-blindness! Should You be Concerned for Your Pets' Eyes? he 'Great White North' is in all its glory right now! In addition to ski hills, there are backyards, dog parks and oceans of farmer's fields thickly blanketed with bedazzling, white snow as far as the eye can see!

artificial tear drops in the eyes to help lubricate and relieve the dry, 'gritty sand' feeling. Your dog may need to wear an Elizabethan (cone) Collar to avoid further damaging the eyes by trying to relieve pain by rubbing or pawing at them.

I don't know about you, but the first thing I do is reach for my sunglasses when I step outside on one of those glaringly, bright-white days. This is because the bright sunlight, reflected off the snow (which by the way, has 80% UV radiation compared with 25% UV radiation reflection off water) can cause a painful, eye condition called, 'Snow-blindness' (Ultraviolet Keratitis or Photo keratitis)

Your Holistic Veterinarian may recommend topical, anaesthetic eye drops to ease pain. Some may recommend dark patches to cover the eyes or have your pet spend some quiet time in a darkened room. Treatment will depend upon severity of the damage done by exposure.

But what about our pets? Are they too, affected by the glare of the bright sun reflecting off the snow? Yes, indeed! Dogs have eyes that are anatomically and functionally very similar to humans. Therefore if you are bothered by the harsh glare, chances are, your dog is too!

Snow-blindness has symptoms similar to sunburn of the skin, affecting the eyes with moderate to severe pain, headache, redness, and dryness. Like sunburn of the skin, most symptoms are only noticed after several hours. If your dog is squinting, definitely get him inside, out of the glare, and gently lay a cool compress on his eyes. The corneas can be 'burnt' resulting in tiny blisters. There may be blurriness, tearing, swelling of the eyeball or eyelid, and temporary blindness. How temporary? The longer your pet is exposed to the UV rays, the more severe symptoms may become. Treatment?

Most cases resolve within 24-48 hours, if immediate action is taken. If you are out in the middle of nowhere, let your dog bury his head in the snow, to 'cool' the eyes. If available, wrap a soft towel or other thick gauze around them to stop the glare from creating further damage. Get him into some shade if possible if you can't get him inside right away. Once inside, gently apply a cool compress to the eyes. (Some, use thin slices of raw potato over the eyes) You can use

Some breeds are more susceptible than others, like the brachycephalic, (those with prominent eyeballs) such as, Boxers, Pugs, Bulldogs, Chihuahua and Shih Tzu. As well as, breeds prone to other eye diseases like Pannus. Such as, German Shepherds, Greyhounds, Poodles and Labradors. How can you prevent this from happening to your pet? If you have an outdoor, working breed, or just enjoy spending a lot of time outdoors with your dog, you may want to invest in a pair of Doggie Sunglasses, such as, 'Doggles' or the very fashionable, 'Rex Specs.' There are also, specialized dog hats with visors to help keep the glare out. Many varieties available, sold online at amazon or at your local pet store. Without protection, limit outside exposure on high, glare days. Take your pets outside during earlier mornings or late afternoons. Never leave your pet tied up outside without access to shade, yes, even in winter! In a pinch, you can smear ash from a fire, or black grease under their eyes as sometimes done on the sled dogs up in the arctic. (similar to what athletes do before a game) *Snow blindness can also happen to your pet even when it is overcast, on those grey, hazy days without contrast, if reflected light is magnified and your dog is unprotected. ~~
