Are You Ready in Case Your Pet Goes Missing?

t doesn't matter how careful you think you are, as pets usually go missing when their loving Custodian isn't around! Top reasons for your beloved pet to go missing are weather events, theft, fireworks, absent-minded family, friends or delivery people. Sometimes, you may have a pet that is an escape artist who just loves to explore! You never believe it will happen to you, until it does. Be prepared! Just as you would prepare an emergency kit for your car, it’s wise to have a special 'Lost Pet' kit ready, to grab on the fly, in case the unthinkable happens. The last thing you want, is to spend those first, precious hours looking for photographs and making up posters. You need to be out there, calling your pet's name, and searching in every nook and cranny! Always, have a recent photo of your pet. If all you have are puppy photos and your dog is already an adult, someone may not recognize a found dog, as yours. If your dog is an adult they probably won't change their looks much, until they grey at the muzzle or, gain/lose weight. In your kit, have 25 posters pre-made and printed up, with current photographs. A full-face view as well as a full body, side-view. This will help someone to clearly identify your pet. Use bold colours in your lettering, so as to catch the eye. Make sure to put the phone number of a manned phone, whether your land line or cell number, check that it is correct! Include a roll of tape as well as a hammer and nails and some thumb tacks. This way, you'll be covered when you put up the posters on lamp posts, trees, and memo boards everywhere you can. Think grocery and corner stores, gas stations, banks, restaurants, hair and nail salons, as well as the SPCA, Pet shops, Veterinarian offices/emergency, Groomers Shop's, and Obedience schools. If your pet needs medication, state it on the poster! It might make a thief think twice, if he believes the dog he's stolen is already sick.

Remember to mark 'REWARD' in big letters at the top of your poster. This is not the time to quibble. Make the reward large enough to be motivating. Include the last place your pet was seen and the date/time he went missing. Have a 'phone tree' list in your kit, with the names of people who will aid you in your search. Break the names down to which service they have agreed to help. Someone to pick up or babysit kids while you're out searching. Have someone to come over and man your land-line phone for any possible sightings/information. Have someone else to help you put up posters and someone to use their phone to call local shelters and Veterinarian offices. Importantly, have someone who is media savvy post to Facebook and other social media. Have the phone number/email/ or Facebook contact to activate the 'Pet Finders' in your location. IE: Pet Finder SD&G and Surrounding Area, Ottawa and Valley Lost Pet Network, Kijiji.ca Lost & Found Pets Canada, Pet Searchers Canada, using social media will get the word out far quicker and further afield than you could possibly do on foot. It's important that you physically visit your local SPCA and shelters and Veterinarian offices as these places are often chaotically busy. If you only telephone and not visit, someone may not have noticed your pet is in the backroom. So go there, often, and check in person. Not everyone in the place may have gotten the 'memo' that your pet is missing and yours, may be the 'stray' that was just brought in. Go out at night when things are quieter to call your pet and bring his favourite treats. Use a happy, light tone, never one where your pet thinks you may be angry. Finally, here are two tips that have never failed me: Keep positive when you are back home, and imagine a bright light shining up like a spotlight into the sky (Think, the 'Bat Signal' from Batman) then sincerely, and from the heart, call out your pet's name saying, “This is HOME! Follow the Light Home to me!” Then ask Archangel Ariel (angel of lost pets) to help your pet, find his way back home. ~~
