Healthy, Effective Home-Remedies for Hairballs in Cats I thought the poor thing was possessed and about to have some sort of an alien explode out of her mouth!

hat's how I felt the first time I saw our new cat-rescue, 'deliver' a hairball. Between the drooling, dry heaves, rolled up eye-balls and chupacabra moans, in the moments leading up to the grand finale. Either, I lay witness to some of the worst, overacting since Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek series, or my very first cat had a very serious problem! Luckily, my tortured imagination only had a moment to try and comprehend how it was that my cat, just had a ~poop come out of her mouth~ before my hubby, (the seasoned cat whisperer) walked in and calmly said, 'Oh Pippin just had a hairball'. Twenty years later, I know just about everything there is to know about hairballs, and how to prevent them, safely and naturally.

Cats are very fastidious groomers. Their barbed tongues capture this hair and over the course of time, this can create quite a ball of hair in their tummies! If this hairball becomes too large for your cat to pass in his regular bowel-movements, he may 'hack it up'. If you've ever seen this, it is unmistakable! Often it sounds like an old smoker coughing up a lung; or something out of the movie The Exorcist. If you are not fond of this picture, then may I suggest some natural, non-toxic home remedies to help your cat easily pass the hair. You can add any one (not all!) of these items below, to your cat's wet-food several times per week, to help keep her hairball-free.

More often, if your cat is big on grooming, and less often if she's not. You can judge how often the remedy is needed, by keeping a close eye on your cat. ~ 2 tsp. Of pureed, raw canned pumpkin. (not pie-filling!) ~ Or, 1/8th tsp. Of Slippery Elm powder, mixing it well, into her wet food. ~ Or, you can add a marble-sized bite of Virgin Organic Coconut Oil ~ Or you can add a good quality, daily Omega 3 supplement for pets. ~ Or, you can add a canned sardine, with a drizzle on top of the olive oil from the can. (avoid feeding Tuna as this is unbalanced and can become addictive) Remember too, that giving your cat a daily brushing will help tremendously in reducing hairballs in your cat. In addition, petting your cat in broad, firm strokes with wet hands after brushing, will also help to lift off any loose hair. Easier for you to then wash your hands of the hair, than for your cat to swallow it all. Never, ever dab petroleum jelly, butter or any other substance on a cat's nose in hopes she'll lick it off to stop hairballs. Your precious fur-baby, with her tiny nostrils upon her tiny nose, needs her nostrils clear and free to breath. Dabbing any substance onto it, can cause your pet to inhale that substance into her lungs quickly causing her to suffocate. I would avoid all store brand, hairball remedies that have petroleum in them. It has been known to cause serious poisoning, and potentially fatal results.
