Unless the highlight of your winter is the seasonal flu, you count on these things to make those colder months more tolerable. Let’s see if you can have a heads start on winter and buy yourself things you could look forward to use or play with when the first snow arrives. First of all, you certainly will need winter tires, are yours in good shape and can they be used for another season? If so why don’t you call your local garage and plan an appointment in advance for some date at the end of October or the beginning of November? This way you won’t be surprised with summer tiresduring the first snowfall or stuck in the waiting room because it’s rush time and every day is booked solid. No tires? Start slowly looking for what you need, sales will soon arise! You may not own Ski-Doos or 4-wheelers or you may be looking for a new one. Local dealers are ready to help you at this very moment! It takes time to find exactly what you want and what you need, why not start looking now? If you find what you need you will look forward to snow begins! If you’ve been shoveling snow off your driveway, perhaps you’re looking for another option. Will you hire a snow removal company or will you buy yourself a snowblower, a 4-wheeler with a plow, or even a tracker? Now is the time to make reservations as you can have a nice choice of area, cottage size, and features. Some cottages may be close to ski hills, some may have hot tubs, pool tables, close to cross country trails, motor operated trails, 1,2,3,4 or more bedrooms... If you start your research now, you may have access to the perfect cottage for the perfect winter retreat! No matter your plans, winter is approaching faster than you think, might as well get ready for it on a positive note!

Tennis Balls and Other Shocking Hazards that can Choke Your Pet! couple of weeks ago, one of my German Shepherds' litter mates ended up in Emergency! He had been playing with a ball, by himself and suddenly began choking! If the ball hadn't lodged in his throat, where two small holes in the ball (blessedly) were exposed, allowing him tiny amounts of oxygen he would have suffocated before arriving at the Emergency Vet's office.

Understand that in addition to size, the felt on a tennis ball was never meant to be sucked and chewed on, by any animal. It is not safe, and it does not break down in the stomach should your dog swallow it. Even the best made tennis balls have fluorescent paint on them, and are pressurized for bounce, with nitrogen inside of them! These are not safe dog toys!

The ball in question, was a toy made specifically for dogs. It was the package instructions appropriate size, yet still proved almost deadly. How can you keep your pet safe?

Other ball choking hazards for your dogs (and even cats!) are pingpong balls, 'birdies' used in Badminton, and super dangerous are golf balls left where your dog might get a hold of one. There's also the squeakers inside of cloth or rubber toys that dogs will take great pleasure in pulling out of the toy, and sometimes swallowing or choking on it in the process.

Know the right size for your pet! A ball that can fit past your dog’s front teeth is too small and poses a very high choking risk. If you are unsure if the current ball your dog plays with is the right size, chuck it! Then, get your cherished pet a ball that is clearly over-sized and SAFE!

How many of you are still playing catch with your dogs using a tennis ball? What once was a beloved past time for those of us who raised dogs in the 50's and 60's, is now known as one of the worst culprits in dog choking hazards! Tennis balls were not created to be a dog's toy. Yet so many people buy them because they are cheap and readily available. Not to mention, dogs love playing with them! However, the choking danger is very real and is your pet's life worth risking? Know the right size ball for your pet! Imagine the toxic chemicals used to make a dog's toy ball from the dollar store!

Buy toys from responsible companies, who keep your pet's health, as well as their fun in mind. Buy over-sized balls and chew toys, or use a dog-safe Frisbee to throw for them. Ensure your pets toys hold up to the same safety standards you hold when buying toys for your children. After all, aren't your pets part of your family? If you consider yourself a responsible Pet Custodian, you will break what may be a long-time habit you've done since you were a child. It may not be easy, but then, when you know better, DO better! Extra tip! If you see your dog choking, grab a glove or towel, anything with grip to hold onto his wet tongue, then gently pull it downward to try and dislodge the ball. If the ball has already travelled down the throat, using your hands on the outside of your dog’s throat, gently 'roll' the ball upward, until it can be reached to pull out. ~~
