Decorating a small deck A little personal outdoor space can go a long way towards relaxing the spirit. And just Liz’ Tips Tips because your apartment or house came with a cramped deck doesn't mean you have to feel Liz’s By: Liz Quinn cramped in it. by Liz Quinn brought to you by The Homefinder
With the right furniture and lots of welcoming colors and plants, you can sit in your very own oasis without fear of banging your knees or elbows. Here's how. 1. Make the deck seem wider Paint your deck in a light color (or stain it in a clear coat). The lighter the shade, the bigger the deck will feel. If your deck is already painted in a dark shade, first prime it with water-based primer (which is white), then follow with the light color of your choice. 2. Shrink the furniture Relatively speaking, the smaller your furniture the larger your deck will feel. Look for comfortable Adirondack chairs that offer great style in a small shape, or opt for more streamline furniture. And give up on the idea of a lounge chair, unless your deck is narrow but long.

Materials Needed: • exterior paint • painter's tape • tape measure • pencil • notepad • 2-inch paintbrush • roller handle • roller cover • paint pan • pan liner • straightedge Paint Background Deck Pour exterior paint into pan liner placed in paint pan. Add roller cover to paint roller, then add two thorough coats of base color to deck. Measure and Tape
3. Choose bright seat cushions You may not have room for a deck lounge, but you can still be comfortable. Consider the colour of your house siding or brick; you don’t want to place pink cushions next to a red-brick wall. Select seat cushions to fit the style of your small furniture. Choose blues and greens, reds and purples, or orange and yellows, colors that will look bright even on cloudy days. And be sure the fabric is fade-resistant. 4. Paint the wall behind the deck Depending on the house building material (brick, siding, wood, etc.) consider painting the wall of the house or your privacy enclosure in a darker shade. This will further increase the apparent size of the deck. It will also create a beautiful backdrop for your deck plants and furniture.
Once base color is dry to the touch, use a tape measure to determine dimensions of painted area rug. Jot dimensions down on the notepad. Referring to notepad, mark the rug dimensions directly onto the deck with a pencil and straightedge. Using the pencil marks as a guide, press the painter's tape directly along outside edge of mark. Follow these simple step-by-step instructions and see how exterior paint and painter's tape can breathe new life into an old deck. Paint Rug Using a paint roller, add two thorough coats of area rug color directly to deck. Reposition Tape Once the painted "rug" is dry to the touch, slowly peel back painter's tape. Touch up any bleed marks using 2-inch paintbrush. Reposition tape along inside edge of area rug. Tape Border Use tape measure to determine dimensions of border. Jot dimensions down on notepad. Referring to notes, mark the border dimensions directly onto deck with pencil and straightedge. Using pencil marks as guide, press painter's tape directly along outside edge of mark.
5. Hang your plants Instead of cluttering your cramped floor space, insert swag hooks in the eaves overhead and hang planters filled with drooping English Ivy and strings of colorful flowers, or you may choose some hanging tomato plants.. You can also mount plant hangers on the wall of the house to suspend plants in the corners. 6. Window boxes Hang window boxes on the far side of the deck rail. This will create a lush view from the deck, without cutting into its actual space. Use low-level plants to avoid creating an enclosed feeling. 7. Add whimsical beauty
Paint Border
Little whimsical touches will give personality to your deck retreat. Hang a beautiful bird feeder from the eaves, a wind chime, or a bird house. And slip blown-glass balls in your flower planters.
Pour exterior paint into pan liner placed in paint pan. Add roller cover to paint roller, then add two thorough coats of area rug color directly to deck.
8. Add a patio umbrella
Once paint is dry to the touch, slowly peel back painter's tape. Touch up any bleed marks using 2-inch paintbrush. Give deck at least 24 hours to cure before walking on it.
If you have no roof overhead, add a patio umbrella with a stand. Choose a brightly colored umbrella, to complement your new colours, to add life to your deck without plunging it in deep shadows.
Remove Area Rug Border Tape
Invite your guests and enjoy a great summer on your new deck!
9. Add a water fountain Look for a small water fountain that will spread the soothing sound of running water through your deck. Place it near an outdoor outlet if you have one, or buy a battery operated fountain instead.
