Close the door on dryer fires By Jason Gadbois State Farm® agent
ou could be heating up more than clothes in your laundry room. According to the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are an estimated 15,500 dryer fires annually, resulting in nearly $100 million in damage. The most frequent causes of these fires are improper ventilation and/or poor maintenance, which allow lint to accumulate. When lint covers heaters, switches and motors in the dryer, fires can result. TIPS According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are some things you can do to help prevent dryer fires: •Avoid leaving the dryer running when away from your home. •Clean the lint trap after every use. •Don’t dry oily rags in your dryer.

•Don’t operate the dryer without a lint filter •Ensure that the dryer is plugged into an outlet suitable for its electrical needs. •Keep the dryer area free of combustibles such as clothing and boxes. Adequate ventilation is key to not only the safety but the per-
formance of your dryer as well. The dryer duct should vent directly outdoors, not into an attic, crawl space or indoors. Ducts should be kept free of lint and combustible debris to prevent a fire from spreading outside of the dryer. Use only metal dryer ducts. Plastic ducts can collapse, caus-
ing blockage and lint buildup within the dryer. Plastic ducts may ignite or melt, and will not contain a fire within the dryer. Follow the manufacturer’s suggestions on the length of ducting you should use, since appliances are tested and certified according to certain specifications. Make sure to consult your owner’s manual for more information. HOT SPOTS While there are no sure signs that your dryer may catch fire, the following are some possible warning signs of trouble: •Clothes, especially towels or jeans, take a long time to dry. •Clothes are hotter than usual at the end of the cycle. •The flapper on the vent hood won’t open when the dryer is on. Consider having a professional disassemble your dryer to clean the lint and debris covering the heaters, switches and motors in your dryer and help prevent fires from occurring.

need to be sealed. Then follow these easy instructions. First, apply some water to your countertop. If it beads up, the sealer is still good. But if the water soaks in, your counters are due for more sealer. Ingredients Needed: 1) Dry Cloth 2) Water-based or impregnating sealers, unlike surfacetype sealers, which can affect a stone's color, impregnators penetrate without altering appearance. What is the best way to clean marble and other stone countertops? The old rule of thumb is never to use anything you wouldn't use on your hands. Never use powdered cleansers or abrasive pads to clean your stone. Even "soft scrub" type cleaners contain pumice, which is powdered volcanic stone, and might damage your marble vanity tops or floors. You should always use sealers and cleaning products designed for natural stone. Clean your stone with lukewarm water and dry with a cotton rag.

Granite has been used in the past in the commercial industry. What is Corian? Corian is man-made and created by combining minerals and acrylics. Corian offers more accessories such as integrated sinks and coved backsplashes, and come in a wide variety of colors; color and pattern options are extensive, and because you're not trying for the look of a natural material, you can experiment with vibrant hues such as turquoise or tomato red. Corian is nonporous, it's virtually maintenance free — no sealing or special cleaning required. Although it can be susceptible to scratches and burns, those are easy to sand out. Corian can also become damaged if exposed to heat. Corian slabs are only 30" wide, so if you have a wide island or peninsula, or an usual shape (i.e. boomerang pictured here), it can require a few more seams than the granite or quartz surfacing. The seams are inconspicuous but not invisible. Corian sinks are affected by something known as ’thermal shock’. This means they can react adversely to temperature extremes. While it’s outside of most everyday use cases of this material, it wouldn’t be a good idea to fill your sink with ice and then pour in boiling pasta. Is it necessary to seal stone? No, it is not necessary to seal stone, however many installers do it to all countertops because the sealer provides great benefit at little cost. In 99% of the cases if a you clean up after meals you will never have a stain. Mineral surfaces like granite are generally not porous, but some stones can absorb minor amounts of liquids, which rarely result in minor discoloring and staining. Although there are many good sealers on the market, taking simple precautions and performing regular cleaning can save trouble and cost. All marble and granite tops are sealed twice in our shop before they are installed. The impregnating substance penetrates the stone deep below the surface, making it quite impervious to alcohol, juices, soft drinks, cosmetics, cleaners, coffee, food and even oil. A good quality stone sealer typically lasts at least 7-10 years. First, use the water test to determine if your countertops
Some of the obvious applications have been panels on the outside of buildings, walls, and floors of "high-traffic" areas. Granite will withstand almost any element it comes up against including heat and cold. Granite itself is approximately 95-98% stain resistant although a silicone impregnator sealer can be used on all natural stone products. This will insure lasting life and beauty. Polished Granite should receive the same cleaning care as polished marble, use lukewarm water and dry with a cotton rag. When needed, spray glass cleaner (i.e. windex) and paper towel dry. **Do not let window cleaner sit on granite surface, clean right away.** Can I cut or chip or discolour my granite countertop? Like any solid surface, high impact blows can harm granite. Granite is harder than your knife blades and will dull them very quickly, if you use the countertop as a cutting surface. Always cut and chop on a wooden or plastic cutting board. - In only cases of sever abuse with a hammer or impact tool. A chip can be filled with a granite dust and epoxy mixture. - Unsealed, granite can absorb stains such as oil, which can ultimately cause dark spots or discoloration. Heat from pots and pans or burning liquids will not affect granite under normal circumstances. If you have a stain in your top contact your stone supplier, they can help you remove the stain by supplying you with a poultice that you can apply to the top to remove the stain. Where can I make the best purchase? Make informed decisions by doing your research. Read up on the product. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It is always best to consult with a knowledgeable and reputable local company when purchasing a product. Ask the dealer to recommend an accredited installer in your area. Don’t accept a verbal guarantee; get your warranties and your guarantees in writing.
