Can't decide which countertop surface is best for you? Well, that is not surprising Liz’ Tips considering the numerous countertop surfaces available. Because its main component is calcium, it can be affected by acids such as vinegar and citrus. * Metamorphic rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock types, in a process called metamorphism, which means "change in form". ** Lithification is derived from the Greek word 'lithos', meaning 'rock'. It is a geology term which refers to a process whereby sediments compact under pressure, expel connate fluids and gradually become solid rock. Lithification may occur at the time sediment is deposited or later.

The following information is to help you find a stylish surface that resists most stains, scratches and spills and fits your budget! Explore the differences between highly popular natural stone surfaces, and read helpful information to help you decide which of the many kitchen countertop surfaces is perfect for your project.

What is granite?

Granite is a very hard igneous rock made up of feldspar, mica and quartz. Granite is formed deep in the earth's mantle at extremely high temperatures. It is a very hard, resistant stone made of crystallized minerals. Although Granite is very durable and capable of lasting a very long time, this product is porous, so staining is possible without a quality sealer. Granite being crystalline in structure always has tiny pits spaces between the various mineral crystals. Some granites pit more than others when being polished, we suggest that you take a closer look at the slab you choose for your job. Chances are, if you look at it across the light you will notice the natural pitting of that stone. Remember, this is natural and it should not be considered an imperfection of the stone. Granite sometimes has natural fissures as well, which may look like cracks, but are not structural defects and are a naturally occurring result of the immense heat and pressure which formed the granite eons ago. These characteristics are part of the natural beauty of stone and will not impair the function or durability of the material. A product of nature cannot be expected to look manmade.

What is “cultured” marble?

Marble dust is combined with cement or synthetic resins to make reconstituted or cultured marble. The appearance of marble can be simulated with faux marbling, a painting technique that imitates the stone's color patterns. Cultured marble is a versatile building material; it is very cost effective and has a number of colour options including limited colour matching. Cultured marble is a composite product made of 75% marble stone and 25% resin and pigments. Each part is custom molded to your specifications, so it is seamless and there is no waste in the manufacturing process. This product is non-porous and is easy to clean, but may scratch. Scratches can be polished out and even small chips can be repaired. What is quartz?

Quartz is a manufactured stone (also called engineered quartz or engineered stone) comprised of 93% quartz stone and 7% resin binder. It is hard to duplicate the veining and pattern look you get from genuine marble or granite. As an engineered product, it's available in a far greater range of colors and patterns than natural stone; quartz is artificially colored throughout for a custom and unique look. Quartz is slightly more expensive than granite. The chunks of quartz are recombined using intense pressure and heat. As a result of this process, quartz typically does not have the veining or porosity that is found in natural stone. Pricing tends to be higher than granite, but quartz offers a stronger, non-bacterial surface.
