TRACEY KELLER – The artist of life By Lahnee Pavlovich

Pablo Picaso once said ‘art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life’. All you need to do is sit and ponder one of Tracey Keller’s pieces of art to know there is a great deal of truth to this statement. Based in Eumundi on the Sunshine Coast, QLD, Tracey Keller is a selfconfessed adventurer, beach bum, princess, nature enthusiast, animal lover, hyperactive artist and big fan of brussel sprouts. She has been putting brush to easel for 15 years full time and still loves it just as much as the day she started. And, her first ever painting was of a gold fish! “I just felt like painting one so I did,” she said. “I paint to create joy and make people smile. When people can all smile at a painting it seems to make the world that little bit happier.” Before she entered the wonderful and often whacky world of art, Tracey worked as the retail operations Manager for Hilton International. “I loved my job but I was always really good at art so one day I did a painting and have never looked back,” she said. “People always tell me how lucky I am to get to do what I love and be paid for it. I have a pretty simple response – the harder I work the luckier I get.” And it hasn’t always been a smooth ride. Tracey credits a healthy body and healthy mind to her success. “It’s funny because I have been through a lot in my life – been under general anaesthetic 55 times, had my foot ripped off in a paragliding accident, had 36 knee operations but I am super fit and pain free. I put it all down to positivity, a healthy attitude and a healthy diet of clean eating,” she said. “I know my body and my mind and I know what I can withstand. I think living a clean life – in eating and in the way you think – is so important. This is how I live and it comes across in my paintings. I'm always smiling and happy and it shows in my work.” Tracey’s first exhibition was at a gallery in Brisbane. She said she just decided to give it a go. “I approached them about doing an exhibition and they loved the idea, it ended up being sold out,” she said. “Next thing I know I was exhibiting in

All because I gave it a shot! “Everyone has the ability to do what they want, but a lot of people keep finding reasons why they can’t – money, time – they put obstructions in their own way. I still get rejections now, but each one brings you closer to perfection. Rejections are part of life but if you don’t go out and try, you will never get what you truly want.” Over the years Tracey’s style of art has changed and progressed. Currently she creates stunning Kaleidoscope pieces focusing on capturing the soul of various animals. Her art combines thickly layered paint and pieces of hessian and metal, woods, charcoal, oils, fabrics and feathers.
As well as putting her name to many pieces of artwork, Tracey has also illustrated a book called ‘A fish with a Wish’ written by Katrina Logan. Katrina loved Tracey’s work so much she made up her book, copied and pasted images from Tracey’s website into the pages and presented the work to Tracey. “I felt humbled and that is how the book came to be,” she said. “It’s now part of the Queensland curriculum.” Tracey also does pet portraits and pretty much anything else that makes her, and others, smile. Over the years she has also raised more than $100,000 for various charities through her work. “I have had a few painting styles over the years. My current style is Kaleidoscope which has been accepted so well by the public and the galleries. I have had sell out exhibitions and I think people love it so much because it’s so bright and happy,” she said. “I don’t think there is really an intellectual reason why I started painting these Kaleidoscope pieces. It really just happened because it was meant to. My partner Kim and I decided to disappear for a while and travel so we went to Bali, completed a course in yoga teaching, ate raw food, practiced our yoga and then when we came back the magic just happened. The style is even now still evolving and that’s the beautiful thing about life too, it’s always changing and evolving.” Tracey is also evolving her work space after moving from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast three years ago. “We are currently working on building

FASHION FORWARD IN BYRON BAY The Link Editor Lahnee Pavlovich has a chat to the very lovely Kelli Wharton, award winning designer and founder of unique Australian fashion brand TALULAH.
Tell me a bit about yourself, how you got into fashion, and the journey you have been on so far. I love what I do. I founded the TALULAH business in 2005 and now work as Creative Director for our three brands. I build collections from concept to design through to production. My typical day involves research, sourcing fabrics, designing prints, designing garments, working with my production team to produce samples and working with our manufacturers to produce our collections.
Tell me a bit about the label TALULAH and where the idea came from. I started making wearable art when I was at school, which lead me to major in fashion at High School. I was hand making lace tops combined with textures which I began selling to a local boutique. As the demand and popularity for these tops grew, I made the decision to build a business
and an entire collection line – this is how TALULAH was born. TALULAH holds a signature colour, print and brand aesthetic that I established when I started and runs through the collections I produce today.
What do you love about the fashion industry? I love the entire process of producing a new collection; concept, to design, to production. We have key pieces that can carry on from range to range including the chic party dress and bonded silk pieces, but every new line I challenge myself to build and grow on our established design aesthetic to create something that is modern, new
and feminine. Delivering a collection where I have pushed myself to go beyond the boundaries of what I have designed previously is always an exciting process!
What has been the best experience for you on this journey with TALULAH so far? Fashion Week was exciting seeing my vision come alive. Selling to all our wonderful boutiques and David Jones, launching into swimwear has been incredible too. I just feel like I’m the luckiest girl in the world because I am doing what I love to do. So every day has its exciting times.

My family and I are lucky that we share our office and home with the beautiful surroundings of Byron Bay and its beaches. In a typical day my husband and I rise early with our two children, drop them off at day care and then head over to join our TALULAH team at TALULAH HQ. Every day is busy in the office, but we are lucky that everyone who is part of our team loves what they do and where they live. Plenty gets done in a single day, but the day’s definitely run away with you. My husband is company Director and I am Creative Director and Designer for the TALULAH brand. We share our office space together and work in partnership to build the business.
Any plans for the future you can share with us? We are continuing to develop the TALULAH and ISLA lifestyle, building a TALULAH world. Ahead for the brand is a designer home wares collection, a new resort collection, plus cushions and furnishings. It is a very exciting time for the brand and our consumer!
What is the one garment you couldn’t live without? My TALULAH Autumn Adore You Maxi Skirt and our new Wild Side Racer back singlet. It’s my staple outfit for the new season.

GET BACK IN TOUCH AT GAIA By Lahnee Pavlovich
Nestled in the lush sub-tropics of the Byron Bay hinterland, a region often famed as the healing capital of Australia, you will find Gaia; an escape from the perils of new millennium living – a secluded sacred space where you can renew, refresh and restore. As a treat to myself at the start of 2014 I booked the Refresh Package, five blissful nights at Gaia Retreat & Spa perched perfectly on the edge of what seems like a hundred rolling hills in all directions. Discovered by Olivia Newton-John and close friend Gregg Cave, the retreat reflects Olivia’s personal elegance and connection with the environment, something she has had a strong affinity with for many years. They like to think of it as bare foot meets Armani… and I suppose it is! The property, which features 13 treatment rooms, a heated salt water swimming pool, tennis court, hot-tub spa, sauna, steam room, walking tracks and its own organic garden, is on 25-acres and seemingly a world away from everything. Driving up the long winding driveway I could smell the change in the air, literally. I took a deep breath and my week had begun. A man named Tim dressed in what looked like the most comfortable brown pants and olive shirt I had ever seen greeted me as I entered the Kukura House, the main restaurant and meeting area. The space was decorated in natural hues of brown and green with muted whites and black stripes here and there. There were peach coloured curtains adorning the wooden beams separating the restaurant from the library, a gift shop and Indian inspired nook closer to the entrance. It was really quite beautiful, like a very fancy version of someone’s expensive home. Tim offered me a seat and some delicious kofta’s and salad with a lemongrass iced tea. The first of many incredible, healthy, organic meals I indulged in during my time here. The thing I noticed about the food was that it was always fresh, bursting with flavours and so vibrant on the plate. Perhaps the best part was that it was designed to your dietary requirements and

simply placed before you. No choices, no hassles, just there ready when you were. After I finished my lunch I was shown to my room, lucky number 13, a Sura Terrace, entered through a big wooden door with intricate detailing. The room was complete with day bed, beautifully striped in the most calming yet energising colours of maroon, lime green, lemon yellow, black and watermelon. Next to the daybed was a wrought iron table with two chairs. A hedge and other green plants offered privacy. The bed inside the room was large, perfect for spreading out head to toe and adorned with squishy pillows. Hidden inside the wardrobe was the ‘restore’ section of the room, a little fridge and herbal tea station complimented with a plate of fruit. The bathroom boasted a sunken tub and a view to an outside reading table. There were plenty of options inside the room for reading too; a chair here, one there with a foot rest. I was glad because reading was something I had come here to do. I had also come here to reconnect with myself, learn how to enjoy my own company and ease the stresses of modern day life. I wanted to take some time to simply sit back shut out the outside world and breathe. And Gaia has the unique ability to provide guests a space to realign themselves physically, spiritually and emotionally through nurturing guidance and wisdom along with nourishing organic food. So what better place to spend 5 nights? Gaia offers a diverse range of revitalising activities with a schedule that changes daily. And the best part is that you can choose to do as little or as much as you want. Something I was really looking forward to was the daily morning yoga; 90 minutes of stretching, flowing and moving through the poses as the sun rises from behind the hills. Followed by a myriad of delicious breakfast options, all healthy and all prepared for you, it was a wonderful way to start each day. Throughout the week I also attended various talks with the team of spa staff on everything from nutrition and stress, to the healing powers of native Australian flowers. If you are feeling energised you can participate in the fitness classes or take a walk around the property with 1.5km of walking

Gazing out over pastures, trees and rolling countryside, orchards to the right and forest to the left, it is almost too perfect, like someone has painted this pretty landscape on the horizon.
tracks boasting stunning scenery and an air of peace. Perhaps a favourite activity was clay sculpting. Who would have thought an exercise in patience could be so rewarding. It was highly therapeutic and the two hours flew past with a focus on nothing more than moulding something boring into something of beauty. On the second day of my stay, robe and slippers on, I meandered through the gardens to the award winning Gaia Day Spa for my first spa treatment of the week. This was a trip I took many times throughout my stay allowing my body and mind to indulge in everything from a remedial massage to acupuncture, lymphatic drainage, body scrubs and steam room treatments, facial masks and even an astrology reading. Stroke by glorious stroke I felt muscles unclench, bones crack lightly and the energy realign inside me. The therapists really knew how to push, pull, stroke, guide and nurture your body and soul back to a place of joy and sheer relaxation. Most days after the treatment was complete I would make my way back to my room floating on pampered feet, make a herbal tea and soak in a warm bath letting the water wash away whatever small bit of stress was left, all the while smiling, a deep hazily fulfilled smile. Afternoons at Gaia are often open
After spending some time perched on a rock watching the clouds float by, listening to the chirping sounds of the insects, you start to feel a greater appreciation for life. Followed by a walk to the veggie garden, a square fenced section sprinkled with herbs, veggies, citrus fruits, and all the colours of the rainbow, you realise why you feel this way. Gaia is in a word, beautiful. And full of life! Stopping to inhale the fresh scent of vine ripening tomatoes and watch the bugs move around the leaves is something you don’t do every day. Here, taking your time just feels natural. By the time I left Gaia, my heart was open, I was letting life in, feeling positive, and I was physically rejuvenated too. Heather Mitchell in Strictly Ballroom In many ways, it’s thanks to the late Pat Thomson that Heather Mitchell is to play Shirley Hastings in Strictly Ballroom The Musical – the role that Thomson played in Baz Luhrmann’s award-winning 1992 film. Asked to audition, Mitchell – whose only experience of musicals was at high school – admits she was

skeptical at first. “I said ‘I’ve never done a musical, it’s ridiculous.’ But when I realised what the role was, I thought, ‘I’ll just give it a go.’ Pat Thomson was a friend of mine. I just loved Pat and I thought, ‘OK, I’m going in for Pat,’” she says. Shirley Hastings is the pushy mother of Scott, the young ballroom competitor who, to Shirley’s horror, wants to dance his own steps. Thomson died of cancer in 1992 shortly before the film’s premiere but was awarded an AFI for best supporting actor posthumously. “It’s a real privilege to try and come close to the heart of what she created,” says Mitchell. One of Australia’s most respected, loved and busy actors, Mitchell was nominated for a 2014 AACTA Award for her portrayal of Gretel Packer in the Nine Network’s Power Games – the Packer-Murdoch Story Part I. Her other recent credits include Luhrmann’s film The Great Gatsby and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead for Sydney Theatre Company.
Mitchell was born in Korea to an American father and Australian mother. “My Dad was a forester. He travelled around the world planting trees most of his life. He met my mother in China where she worked in orphanages,” says Mitchell. After a “wonderful childhood” in Jamaica and America, the family came to Australia. Mitchell went to high school in Camden, NSW then moved to Sydney where she heard about NIDA and auditioned successfully. Strictly Ballroom began life at NIDA in 1984 – four years after Mitchell graduated – as a student project of Luhrmann’s. “I get the feeling that Baz wants to be true to that original idea,” says Mitchell of the musical. “It’s not trying to recreate the film. There will be a lot of colour and gorgeous costumes and all that sort of thing but I think he also wants to be true to the original stories, which were very personal.” The score for the musical will include new and existing songs. Mitchell hasn’t sung professionally before,
but during the audition process Luhrmann gave her the opportunity to take regular singing lessons with the show’s musical supervisor Max Lambert – which she continues to do. “I won’t ever be belting out a song but I will be singing. They are writing something to suit my voice, which is incredible,” says Mitchell. She is also enjoying the ballroom. “I love dancing. As a child I did (classes) but my only professional experience is dancing in a cage at the Hip Hop Club in my 20s,” she says with a laugh. After one of the first read-throughs of the musical, Mitchell says the cast “ended up in a conga line and just couldn’t stop. (The show) is just so life affirming and very uplifting. It does make you want to dance at the end. I think Baz wants the production to have that feel – an infectious joy that makes you feel really happy and just makes you want to dance and sing.” Strictly Ballroom The Musical, Lyric Theatre, Sydney from March 25. LAUGH OUT LOUD The 10th Annual Sydney Comedy Festival is returning to Sydney and one of the acts we are all looking forward to is Irish born Jimeoin. Inflight editor Lahnee Pavlovich had a chat to the funny man in the lead up to the festival.
So tell me a bit about how you got into comedy? I was actually traveling in Sydney as a backpacker and I went to a comedy show one night. I decided to get up on stage and tell a few jokes and the rest is history as they say. That was 25 years ago!
You have been involved in a lot of things over the years, had success in film, on tv and of course with your stand-up, you have travelled Australia and the world, what do you enjoy most about your career? That I can still do it! It’s not that easy to be able to still tell jokes and get a laugh after this long. I’ve been really lucky because I think I’ve actually gotten better over time and that’s the best part for me.
You’re quite the comedy favourite and of course well known for your observations on the absurdities of every-day life. What have you been observing lately? (Laughs) well I can’t give that away or you wouldn’t need to come to my shows.
How would you describe your comedy? Funny…. (laughs). I think my comedy is just all about jokey jokes. I don’t really stay on any subject I just tell funny jokes. It’s just about having fun, having a laugh, it doesn’t really have a point… I suppose you could call it pointless.

Have tea with the Mad Hatter, take a quick visit to Italy, and pass through antique Indian gates flanked by elephants. If you feel the need, you could even profess your love in a giant corkscrew made of roses. No, we haven’t fallen off the wall with Humpty Dumpty. These are all things you can do in one day at the Hunter Valley Gardens. Covering 60 acres with thousands of flowers, trees and shrubs, the Hunter Valley Gardens are arguably one of the highlights of the historic Pokolbin district in New South Wales. Nestled in the Hunter Valley vineyards, the ten themed gardens - Formal, Indian Mosaic, Rose, Italian Grotto, Chinese, Lakes Walk, Border, Sunken, Oriental and the Storybook Gardens – first opened in 2003 after a four year construction, and have been entertaining both kids and adults ever since.
For the Kids: Hailed as one of the best places in the Hunter Valley for children, there is plenty to keep the kids amused in the Hunter Valley Gardens. “It’s a safe place where [kids] can come in and run around,” Hunter Valley Gardens spokesperson, Alena Pople says. “A lot of people love the children’s storybook garden, with all of the characters such as Humpty Dumpty, Alice in Wonderland and the Gingerbread house. That seems to be a
popular one for people no matter what age they are." The Hunter Valley Gardens also provide a kids playground in the village shopping area, where families can have a barbeque or a picnic while the kids play, along with an aqua put-put and golf course.
Tying the knot: Couples looking to get hitched at the gardens won’t suffer from a lack of choices. With six stunning locations, the Hunter Valley Gardens host multiple weddings every week. “One of the more romantic gardens is the Border Garden which is beautiful because it has lovely plantings of colourful annual flowers, as well as beautiful fountains and statues,” Ms Pople says.
The Hunter Valley Gardens also occasionally host special events, with the most notable being the Christmas lights in November/ December each year. Some events to look out for in 2014 include the Hunter Valley Gardens Chocolate Festival and Snow Time in the Garden, both in July.

IVANHOE If you chase city lights and over-priced cocktails, then perhaps the Ivanhoe region is not for you. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a peaceful getaway, a historical experience or to appreciate some of Australia’s greatest wildlife, then pop on the train to one of New South Wale’s oldest railway stations, Ivanhoe.
In the wild Whether you choose to drive or travel on a train, you are guaranteed to see an array of natural wildlife on your way to Ivanhoe. The town itself offers visitors the chance to see two of Australia’s most iconic animals: the kangaroo and emu. Ivanhoe local Jan Longfellow said both of these creatures can be found wandering through Ivanhoe. For those unfamiliar with the temperament of the kangaroo and emu, Mrs Longfellow promises that there is nothing to be afraid of. “They will run from you first,” she laughs. For more variety, spend the day at Willandra National Park, situated 70kms Southeast of Ivanhoe. About a 50 minute drive away, the park is perfect for bird watchers and reptile lovers, with 23 species of reptiles, including bearded dragons, and 195 different types of birds calling it home.

Park’s Merton motor trail and appreciate not only an array of natural wildlife but the remnants of the daily lives of Aboriginal people from over 45,000 years ago. Visitors are welcome to look at the remains of oven hearths, broken pieces of grinding dishes and stone flakes, but should not touch the objects. Once you have walked the trail, history fanatics, ghost chasers and those looking for a thrill will enjoy staying in the historic men’s quarters of Willandra National Park during sheering season. It is said that the ghost of sheerer Flash Jack – from the old bush song, Flash Jack from Gundagai – visits the quarters when it is time to get the sheers out. For history buffs that prefer to keep away from the supernatural or just stay in Ivanhoe, the self-guided Ivanhoe Heritage Trail is a must. The trail allows visitors to explore historic sites of the classic outback town, including the 1920’s heritage listed railway station, and learn about the infamous bushrangers. A brochure on the selfguided tour can be found at the local post office, or visitors can simply follow the eight sign-posted locations. After completing the Heritage Trail, take a look at the Long Paddock Mural – The Pioneers– a visual portrayal of Ivanhoe’s history.

boasts a strong community spirit, and a friendly welcome to visitors. In November last year the community held a 14km Bush Ride through the town to raise money for the McGrath Foundation. Participants could choose to ride bike or horse, and together raised over $40,000. A fundraising event for the McGrath Foundation is planned again for late this year, with the possibility of a representative from the Australian Cricket team making an appearance.

When planning a getaway to Thredbo resort you undoubtedly envision frosty days filled with snow, skiing and hikes through icy wilderness. But what happens when the snow begins to melt away? Well, I can tell you that there is plenty to do at Thredbo when the sun is shining. Whether you’re planning a holiday for sight-seeing, sports, adventure or for learning something new, there is a bit of everything in the warmer months at Thredbo. KEEP FIT ON HOLIDAYS By former olympian Elka Whalan For many of us, maintaining an exercise routine while we're on holiday seems impossible. We may have grand plans to hit the hotel gym every morning, but when great food and no alarm clocks become a daily reality, it can be harder to motivate yourself than you first thought. Here are my top four tips to help make sure some form of exercise makes its way into your holiday routine! 1: Buy a resistance band. These can be found in any general sports store such as Rebel and they weigh literally as much as feather. This makes them perfect for travelling - they don't take up much room, you can't use the excuse that it's eating up your luggage allowance, and you can use them pretty much anywhere. Before you hit the breakfast buffet, bust them out in your room or take them outdoors for strength and resistance training. Resistance bands are amazing for toning and keeping fit especially if you have lots of trains to catch on the way to your destination. 2: Pack your sneakers. Old or new, smelly or just purchased, there is no excuse not to put them on and go explore your new place. Power walk the streets or find a safe park and run and take in the sights. Never go on holidays without your runners. You can't go wrong - and after days of exploring, your feet will thank you that you did it in sneakers and not strappy sandals! 3: If do happen to find yourself in a place with no gym (which is highly unlikely these days) then use your imagination. Take a look around your hotel room - what objects can you utilise for a quick workout? Use walls as a backing to do squats and lunges, use the desk chair for dips, and if there are free bottles of water by your bed, use them as weights and dumbbells for your upper body! There are no excuses not to stay in shape. For that extra room service treat you need to earn it! 4: Pack your exercise gear. Space is limited when traveling, so make it a priority that you will work out. By packing your training clothes you have to be accountable for taking up that room in your suitcase so get it out and use it! Find a block time to use the gym or swim in the hotel pool and do it! You'll always have time for things you put first. Make exercise a priority. It's a life saver when it comes to jet lag! •

A CULINARY ADVENTURE IN PORT MACQUARIE THE 2013 SBS FEAST TASTINGS ON HASTINGS a festival packed full of flavour

Recently my fiancée Amanda and I visited Port Macquarie to experience the ‘SBS Feast Tastings on Hastings’, the region’s premier food and wine festival showcasing all the gourmet delights the region has to offer. But we discovered so much more than just the festival with three days in town. We set off in the early hours of the morning bound for the train station in Brisbane to depart on the XPT, NSW TrainLink’s express passenger train connecting Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. We made our way to our roomy first class seats and settled in for the journey ahead. Having caught some express trains through Europe a few years ago I was a bit concerned about the leg room, but I had room to spare this time around. The buffet car provided some breakfast and light refreshments during the trip which was really convenient. It was a different way to travel for us, and we were able to catch up on some good books and recline the seats for a well-earned nap. Around seven hours later we arrived, surprisingly fresh, at our destination Port Macquarie. We made our way to the Mantra Quayside, our hotel situated near the centre of town and overlooking the beautiful Hastings River. The room was really comfortable, as you would expect from Mantra, with a large spa in the bathroom to boot! I made a beeline for the rooftop pool which I had seen on the website for the hotel. As soon as

I hit the water I felt like a new man, exactly what I needed after a big day of travelling. After chilling out poolside we felt ready to get to know the town. I was surprised to learn that Port Macquarie had such an interesting historical background. In the early 1820s it was established as a penal settlement and was well known for its rather tough conditions. A decade later, in 1830, the region was first opened to settlers who quickly made use of the area’s quality timber, pastoral land and abundant fishing potential. Hard to believe such a beautiful place was once considered a terrible place to be sent. The significance of 1830 was the inspiration for our venue for dinner that evening, Eighteen Thirty Restaurant & Bar, located in the ultra-modern Glasshouse building on Clarence Street. We were greeted by a very upmarket setting, akin to a fancy harbour side restaurant in Sydney. With piano playing in the background we were both feeling very much in holiday mode, sipping on our cocktails enjoying our entrée, which was duck liver pate with port jelly, sour cherries and melba toast – amazing! Shortly thereafter our mains arrived; I’d ordered the beef striploin with potato mash, baby spinach, slow roasted tomato and wine jus. Amanda’s barramundi with smoked aubergine puree, spiced daikon and peanut sambal had some very unique flavours that she thoroughly enjoyed. Dessert didn’t disappoint, what a way to end this dining experience! Chocolate blondie with mocha cannelloni and cacao sorbet, and lychee macaroons with coconut meringue, raspberry gel and passionfruit sorbet were our selections. Now that was a dinner! The next morning we collected our hire car from First Class Rentals and drove
west for around 15 minutes to reach Cassegrain Winery. Once a month they host ‘The Artist Market in the Vines’, which we were fortunate enough to be able to attend that day, with its relaxing folky vibe beside the lake, set amongst the vineyard and jacarandas. Sipping on our goat’s milk lattes and perusing the various stalls was the perfect way to spend a Saturday morning, with plenty of breakfast options there as well. Next stop was the Billabong Koala and Wildlife Park, located about 5 minutes away, halfway between Port Macquarie and Wauchope. Nestled amongst the forest we found the Park, well-known in the area for its variety of wildlife. We headed straight for ‘Jurassic Pond – home of Shrek the Monster Croc’, and indeed a monster he was. You can head below the pond to see Shrek underwater, an experience that was truly unique. They have a theatre set up for feedings, something well worth checking out. We were surprised at the amount of birdlife they have at the Park, from wedge-tail eagles to peacocks wandering around the pathways, and the exotic animals such as snow leopards and red panda. The kangaroo and wallaby feeding from my hand was a highlight, and I was embarrassed to admit that as an Australian, this was something I had never done. Well worth trying. Make sure you check out the red panda feeding in the afternoon, a couple of cute little characters indeed. After another relaxing swim back at the hotel we were then invited along to the ‘SBS Feast Magazine Sneak Peek Party’ in the Cooking Demonstration Pavillion for the Tastings event the following day. We were introduced to a few of the guest chefs of the festival who had made the trip up from Sydney. We knew the food the next day was going to be spectacular if the offerings that evening were anything to go by.
Finally the day had arrived; it was indeed the day of the Tastings on Hastings. The weather gods were smiling on Port Macquarie as it was absolutely perfect weather. With over 100 gourmet stands set up, not to mention some jumping castles for the kids, a couple of stages with live music and even a spaghetti eating contest, you have a big day ahead of you to take it all in. I must admit I was roped into one of the aforementioned contests, and even managed to take out one of the heats! Sadly, I was destroyed in the final by one of the locals who somehow managed to ingest an entire plate of pasta in around 20 seconds. I was happy to let him take that one out! Throughout the day we were fortunate enough to learn from some guest chefs in the demonstration marquee; Craig Freudenstein of XS Food, Mitchell Orr of 121BC, David Tsirekas of Xanthi Restaurant, Patrick Friesen of Ms G’s and local favourite Eric Robinson of The Other Chef Fine Foods. They ran through their recipes and what inspires them to cook, and we were then lucky enough to sample the food at the end of each demonstration. My personal favourite was the Thai fried chicken that Friesen demonstrated. Later in the afternoon after sampling more than our fair share of delicious food, the event had come to a close. We decided to book a cruise on the Chinese Junk Boat which we noticed moored at the river. Fish and Chips on board and a local beer from Black Duck Breweries in hand we were gliding in style on the Hastings, with one of the most amazing sunsets we’d ever seen. On the way back to the dock we were fortunate enough to witness some local dolphins hitching a ride at the bow of the boat, putting on a show for everyone on board. The next morning we had a quick stroll around the beach at the other side of Port Macquarie, and sat up on the headlands overlooking the ocean. Some humpback whales decided to give us a farewell to the region, helping to make the weekend a great one. A DECADE OF MEMORIES Ten years ago, one of the world’s most iconic trains completed an epic journey from the coastal city of Adelaide, through the scorching heat of the Red Centre and onto the steamy tropics of the Far North. Australian rail had entered a new era.
It was midday on February 1, 2004 when a large crowd gathered on the platform of the Adelaide Parklands Terminal in Keswick to celebrate The Ghan’s inaugural journey from Adelaide to Darwin. The new $1.2B railway link from Alice Springs to Darwin had taken over two years to complete. It stretched over 1,420km, including six major and 87 minor bridges, and it had taken the construction crews 145,000 tonnes of rail and two million sleepers to build. All guests were there to witness the next chapter in The Ghan’s history – the realisation of a grand vision for transcontinental travel that was first conceived in the 1920s. Two days and almost 3000km after departing Adelaide, The Ghan arrived to much fanfare in the Northern Territory capital. The Ghan’s transcontinental journey north came 75 years after the train first left Adelaide for Alice Springs. For more than a century there had been a great deal of deliberation regarding the construction of a rail-link between Alice Springs and Darwin. The Northern Territory became a
separate territory from South Australia in 1911, partly on the condition that, at some stage, a transcontinental railway would be completed. The line would provide enormous tourism benefits and in a sense, bring the people of Australia’s most northern outpost closer to the rest of the nation. Over the last decade, the Alice Springs to Darwin tracks have opened up amazing opportunities for Ghan travellers to explore some of Australia’s most fascinating towns and landscapes. In 2014, The Ghan relived this epic event with a special journey from Adelaide to Darwin in February, featuring live performances and special events.
- Approximately 20% are holidaymakers from overseas. - The Ghan has taken 1570 journeys over the past ten years, travelled 4.67m kilometres. To put this into perspective, if this was one continuous journey, The Ghan would have circumnavigated the globe 117 times. -
Crew members fluctuate between 20 and 35 depending on the number of guests aboard. A full-time Great Southern Rail employee can expect to spend around 260 days a year on board a train.
- The journey itself takes two nights and three days (54 hours) one way for a stretch of 2979km.

- The average train length is 774m and average weight is 1400 tonnes.
- 537,449 people have travelled on The Ghan since the track extended to Darwin ten years ago.
- Overall, 1.3 million dishes are served in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant per year.
- 54% of guests over the past decade have chosen to travel in Gold Service, 44% in Red Service and 2% in Platinum Service (which was introduced as a service level in late 2008).
