Inthiscase,Iwasauditingthe logbookofmystudentinpreparationfor aPrivatePilotcheckride.Nobigdeal, eh?Howeverthiswasnotmyfull-time student,butagentwhohadcometome forthefinalprep,giventhathisCFIwas notcomfortablewiththenewAirman Certification Standards. He had been workingonhisPrivateforyears,witha logbookfullofendorsements.Thequestionwas,didhehavethecorrectendorsementsforthecheckride?

Fortunately,theDPEinvolvedprovidedadetailedguidelineforthecheckride,includingalistof17endorsements possibly needed in today’s world of bureaucraticallydrivenaviation.Itturns outthisstudent’slogbookdidnothavea currentlistofpre-printedendorsements (fewlogbooksdo)andsignificantupdatingwasrequired.Noonehaddoneanything wrong, but the complexity of endorsementrequirementshasincreased markedlyinthelast10years.Ofcourse, theFAAisashelpfulasever,providing anendorsementAdvisoryCircular(AC61-65H).Containedthereinare92officialFAAendorsements,forwhichevery CFIisfullyresponsible.Quiteaload! Wasitalwaysthisway?

Where did the aviator’s logbook comefrom?DidOrvilleandWilberkeep one?Didtheyendorseeachotherforsolo flight?What was considered a cross country1903?Inspiteofthiswriter’s reputation for knowing an enormous amountofworthlessaviationtrivia,the originofthepersonallogbookremainsa mystery.Tobesure,thepioneerskept records,butmoreforpatentrightprotectionthantryingtogetajobwithanairline.Didthistraditionbeginwiththeearliestaviatorstryingtoimpresstheladies, “Iamtheworld’sgreatestaviatorwith oversevenhoursflyingtime?”Actually, quiteafeatbackwhenanaverageflight mightlastlessthan10minutes!Tobe sure,loggingflighttimebecameanorm inthemilitary,andlaterwhenaviation fellundertheauthorityofvariousstate andfederalagencies.Butformanyofus, thelogbookisadiaryofadventure, placeswehaveflownto,peoplewehave flownwith,andtrainingtaken.

Alookatmyoldlogbooks(some neededmuseum-levelrestoration!)tell thestoryofamuchsimplertime.This writer’s career began with only two endorsements,oneforsoloandonefor crosscountry,neitherofwhichwerein mylogbook,butonthebacksideofa long-lostmedicalcertificate.Itookallof mywrittenexamsandflighttestsbysimplywalkingintoanFAAofficeand tellingthemIwantedtotakeatest.Sure, minimumhourscameintoplay,butno endorsements.Themostfuninvisitinga flying career that spans 65 years is rememberingthepeopleIhaveflown with.Thatincludedaflightsnuggledinto myT-CraftBC-12withagirlfriend,a muchtighterfitthancouldbeachievedin my“49”BuickSedanontheMulholland Drivescenicoutlook.Yep,funmemories!

Buttherearemorethanjustmemoriesandrequiredendorsementstoday. Howaboutthosethreetakeoffandlandingsin90days,nightcurrency,IFRcurrency,makeandmodelflyingtimefor insurancereasons,dateofyourlastFlight Review, an Instrument Proficiency Check, or other considerations. Remember,givenaneventthatattracts theattentionoftheFAA,yourlogbookis subjecttoaudit.Areyousureyoulogged thosesixinstrumentapproachesinthe lastsixmonths?Howaboutfullstop landingsatnight?Remember,currency forcategoryandclass,howaboutthat seaplaneratingandwaterlandings?Once again,whatstartedaslittlemorethana traditionofkeepingadiaryofflightexperienceshasbecomealegalrequirement. Dodigitallogbookshelpkeepyoulegal? Tobehonest,Idonotknow.Idoknow thatdigitalrecordsareaccepted,butdo they keep track of types of flying required by regulations, providing reminders?

Thiswriterhasplacedinstructional endorsementsintodigitallogbooksbut findthattheformatwasobviouslynot designedbyaCFIqualifiedindividual whohadanyflyingexperience.Inone case, I could not use my Ground Instructorcertificateforawrittenexam endorsement because the format demandedacertificateexpirationdate. GroundInstructorcertificatesdonothave expirationdates.Isthereatrulygooddigitallogbookouttherethatisnotintegral toanexpensiveflight-planningprogram? Howaboutsmartphoneconvenient?To be sure, they may exist, but one is inclinedtowonderwhyguyslikemedo notknowaboutthem.
