CONTENTS 04 2016 Honorees 05 About Us 08 PULSE 12 Out & About 16 Tainted Ink 22 Why LGBTQ+ Senior Housing?
Welcome to our second issue of OUTINCT.COM. This year our community has been marked by great achievements and tragedy. The events at the Pulse night club once again reminds us that we have a long way to go in our struggle for equality and understanding. The LGBTQ+ community has contributed significantly to our country, state, nation and the world. The world paused to honor and celebrate the lives of those who were lost to violence this past year. I would like to thank CLARO, our sponsors, and the many individuals whose time and generosity have made PrideFest possible once again. As this event continues to grow, we hope this celebration becomes a gathering of all people who seek equality and representation under our rainbow flag. Celebrating Pride enables us to bring to light our contributions as a community and, most especially, letting our youth know that we do have a lot to be proud of, that love trumps hate, and that we have to do more. Let’s hold hands and in one loud voice say “no more.” We must persevere in eradicating hate, homophobia, and all other forms of discrimination in our country and the world. I hope that you all enjoy the festivities and that you have an opportunity to show your PRIDE. Sincerely,
Charlie Ortiz

O
ur movement for LGBTQ+ civil rights was catalyzed in a traumatic way close to 50 years ago at a bar named Stonewall in New York City. Those three nights of rioting were full of violence and pain and courage by patrons who dared to be themselves. The Stonewall patrons stood strong to bring an end to the years of cowering to oppression. Our pride celebration was muted by the tragedy which unfolded in a bar named Pulse in Orlando. The horrific details were communicated much more effectively to us. In that process, we may start to feel like we were there, too. We call this vicarious trauma. We don’t need to have been there to start to experience similar internal symptoms parallel to what people there experienced. We may have flashbacks of some of the vivid images which were described by the victims of what they went through that night. We may also have troubling nightmares or night terrors where we wake up in a sweat and have trouble going back to sleep. If you start experiencing feelings like the ones described above. Seek help! A mental health professional can help you to get grounded. It’s one approach to help you move from reliving and staying in the past to being present right now. Try holding a smooth stone and fully feeling its weight, dimensions, coolness and shape is one of many strategies to help you be in the present. There is a free phone app called MindBell that goes off randomly to help you get grounded throughout the day. The Hartford Gay and Lesbian Health Collective (HGLHC) maintains lists of therapists throughout Connecticut to make referrals if you need help. You can reach the HGLCH at (860) 278-4163, or visit www.hglhc.org. LGBTQ+ GUIDE OF CT 2016 - 2017 | 9

housands of LGBTQ+ community members, along with friends, families and allies attended PrideFest 2016 in Hartford, under the Memorial Arch in Bushnell Park in celebration of love, peace, and pride. This year’s second annual PrideFest was the largest LGBTQ+ event in Connecticut to date. Trinity Street was ablaze with color and music Saturday afternoon. The event brought thousands of people downtown to join the festivities and fun, which included vendors, live music, drag shows, booths from community businesses that sponsored the event, and a late night after party with a Studio 54 theme. Charlie Ortiz, the event’s coordinator, said “it was great to see folks strolling through the street, browsing the vendor tables, and getting down to the music.” Mucha Mucha Placer emceed the event, introducing the speakers and performers including former Hartford Mayor Pedro E. Segarra and Connecticut LT. Governor Nancy Wyman who presented a proclamation designating Sept. 10th as PrideFest Day in Connecticut. Charlie Ortiz thanked the former mayor and everyone who helped make the event possible. Hartford Capital City Pride is committed to making PrideFest more accessible, inclusive and relevant to all parts of Hartford’s diverse LGBTQ+ community and residents. We look forward to welcoming you again on Saturday, September 9, 2017, under the Arch. LGBTQ+ GUIDE OF CT 2016 - 2017 | 13

Good question based on the perspective of someone who has been a visiting nurse for over 35 years and has been in thousands of homes over those years of every race, religion, sexual orientation and gender expression. Yes we can get married today, yes we have laws etc, but laws don’t protect you well when you are sick, vulnerable, weak, maybe fully alert and oriented or not. Laws are often enforced postmortem and that is no way to live your life. The vast majority of LGBTQ+ seniors I have taken care of both at home and in the hospital, like all of us, revert back into being a teenager in High School, back in the closet again, and afraid. They hide the clothes they would normally wear, they hide the pictures of loved ones, the movies, the books etc., and for good reason, as the medical establishment has done a dreadful job of cultural competency. This type of living is draining and bad for the relationships that foster our wellbeing and health. I have to admit most of the senior housing I have visited
22 |
has been developed by houses of faith, and no, they cannot keep LGBTQ+ Seniors out, but they are not welcoming nor culturally competent.
To Love!
Yes, it does matter if the super of the building or other auxiliary staff understand, that the person you love is not your “roommate.” Yes, it does matter if your neighbors are stone cold silent as you walk by the mailbox or in the elevator. Being shunned at 85 is not the same as being shunned at 30 when you have a job to go to and your friends have not died off yet. I have not mentioned the word affordable as some people will have the resources to hire staff to stay in their homes the rest of their lives, but I will point out that 47% of people on Social Security have no other source of income, and most people today will live longer than their relations. As I write this, my aunt will be 100 in a few months. A good example is from a patient I had in 1981a 78 years old retired School Principle who in 1960 had enough money to buy four houses for about $30,000 in 1960. By 1981 he had spent all the money and more on health problems; money he thought would keep him the rest of his life. The Stonewall generation has turned gray and the Act UP generation, many with HIV and other medical problems, is just turning gray. If we don’t build for our Seniors who will? Where will we go when we are 75 or 85? Yes, in a perfect world we would not need cultural competent senior housing, but as of now, and for the next 30 or more years, we will.
