JUSTIN TERLECKI

Justin Terlecki lives and works in Lowertown, St. Paul, Minnesota. Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, Terlecki graduated from Youngstown State University in 1997 earning a BFA in painting and printmaking. He has exhibited his work regularly in the Twin Cities since moving to Minnesota in 1998 and has been with Groveland Gallery since 2011. In 2009, Terlecki received a Jerome Fellowship for Emerging Printmakers through Highpoint Center for Printmaking which funded a series of prints inspired by his travels to India and Spain. Terlecki's work is included in the permanent collection of the McDonough Museum of Art and many local and national private collections. Besides being a visual artist, Justin also teaches classes on the art of Pysanky, Ukrainian Egg Decorating.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Common everyday places can easily be overlooked as sources for creativity. In my latest work, I discover inspiration in my own familiar surroundings, such as my living space in Downtown St. Paul, my Lowertown neighborhood of century old stone and red brick buildings, and even my mother’s home in Northeast Ohio. Working through direct observation when possible, I explore the intricate details of these environments. I study the way natural or artificial light casts shadows and reflections to create a realistic inviting presence. In my depictions of interiors, I especially focus on the personal possessions which define these spaces. Collected souvenirs, old photographs, wall art pieces, and forgotten trinkets all tell stories through their considered placement, implying sentimental origins. In these images, one’s present coexists with the past. The time of day and changing seasons evoke the quiet sound of time passing. Even though a majority of this current series does not depict the figure, the people occupying these spaces remain present.
