PRINTS & PAINTINGS STUART LOUGHRIDGE

September 11 - October 16, 2021

STUART LOUGHRIDGE

Stuart T. Loughridge is based in Saint Paul. As a studio painter he works primarily with oil-paint and watercolors. He is also a devoted print maker, well known for his etchings; and occasionally he is able to find time to create serigraphs. As for genres he is a landscape painter, and part-time he's a portrait and figure painter. Stuart's methods of creating a landscape are rooted in the 18th and 19th century practice of watercolor sketching. Stuart carries a small watercolor kit with him at all times. These treasured plein-air sketches are the raw material; they are the seeds for the finished studio creations, whether that be an etching, a watercolor, or an oil painting. The field sketches are by no means trying to be accurate representations of fact but rather inspired short-hand observations and are often void of city or settlement.

ARTIST STATEMENT Nearly all the works in this exhibition were created in the studio, yet they were also created with reference to a sketch. A sketch, no more than 7x10”, is created on location in the course of a few hours, and, if necessary, brought to completion in the studio. For an example of the completed sketch see “Carlton Peak,” and “ Lake Superior.” Sketching is a peripatetic discipline, so I travel light, carrying only a sketchbook and a compact watercolor kit. There is no such thing as a failed sketch: in the studio all the notes and sketches become useful as reference material in the building of a finished work of art. A piece may cite numerous sketches and notes, such as the etching “Beaver River,” which made use of five different sketches that were created over a span of twelve years. “St. Croix” (oil on canvas) references four sketches. Sometimes there are extensive alterations from an original idea, and it is this process of translating a sketch into a finished work of art that I find most intriguing. The final result is not necessarily an exact representation of a place, rather these works are the results of problems I have solved on how best to view a scene. For me the decision to become a landscape painter was not a profound or difficult one. Figuring out how to make a living at it was, but my love of sketching has provided the foundation for my art and my business. Investing in my library of sketches and the experiences of sketch-artists, such as the outstanding John Sell Cotman, have taught me how to use sketches as a resource for creating finished works of art.
