A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

This is the BUMPER convention edition of the NICRA Bulletin. It may be the last type of Bulletin like this as we know it. More on the later. We are so excited to see many new members of the association attend the event coming up this month. There have been many Facebook (Isn’t it Meta now?? I don’t know) posts asking or first timer tips and there have been some good advice given. Here are a few of the prominent ones:

Bring along a pad and paper and take a lot of notes. Use the app as much as you can. Text yourself pictures of products you like and of business cards you want to follow up on. It’ll help keep you organized and help to remember who goes with what business. Make your top three ideas list before you leave convention so you’re ready to go when you get home. Get ready to get your chat on. You’re going to love it. Participate in everything that is offered! If you leave exhausted and overwhelmed…You did it right. Speak to as many suppliers as you can – they have great industry experience and insight. Someone suggested to hit the bar first. There will plenty of opportunities to share a drink and a great meal throughout the event.

Have a good read of this edition as it has information on the Convention App, donations for our charity auctions, the complete agenda with seminars, speakers and much much more. Can I also suggest you take some time to plan out your trip by looking at the seminar listings and the trade show floor map? This year will be the biggest and most attended trade show for the last 20 years, so plan accordingly. A word on COVID Safety. We are grateful that COVID cases are dropping daily in the Orlando area, however the Convention Committee are still requiring that masks are to be worn on the Trade Show floor and in the sessions. We have gone to extra effort to spread out where we can on our meals, competition and other large gatherings. I think you will find a nice balance of activities, educations, meals, networking and safety. AND, can I make a recommendation on at least 2 sessions to attend. The first is the MAJOR NICRA Announcement that will be part of the opening session at 1pm on Sunday the 7th of November. It’s the biggest Association news in 88 years. Also, plan to stay for the awards banquet and after party. We have a great band to celebrate and dance the night away at the end of the event. Travel safe, document your exciting trip to Orlando on the App’s Social Wall, and we will see you very soon.

The Importance of Pest Control in Food Facilities Like so many other areas of food safety, when it comes to pest control, focusing on prevention is absolutely key. Whether on the production floor or at the retail level, proper pest prevention and management is an essential part of any food safety plan. Pest control can be managed internally by a company or can be done via a third party contract. Whichever way you go, your ability to think proactively is key to preventing foodborne illness concerns related to pests. This means understanding conditions in your facility where pests can thrive, auditing your facility for weaknesses, training your employees what to look for, and being actively engaged in both vigilance and record keeping. It’s important too, to acknowledge that a one size fits all does not work, as geographical location, weather, the production environment, and seasonal changes can vary the threats that are most prevalent for your facility. Consider, for example, the myriad of ways pests can get into a facility and why they stay. Any openings in walls, floors, windows, roofs, etc. are all potential entry points. Poor sanitation procedures can also be a cause of infestation, as well as incoming pallets, boxes, and other

materials. Once pests have finagled their way into your operation, they hang around for things like: food, shelter, moisture, warmth, and other various needs. With all of these factors in mind, it can feel a bit overwhelming to figure out how to take on pest control most effectively for your operation. However, you are not alone! There are plenty of great resources out there. Here is an action plan for example that can get you thinking about pest control proactively: -Start with the outside perimeter of your property and look for any openings or penetrations. Clear out any perimeter debris, pallets, old equipment, old pipes...items that could provide harborage to pests. -Engage a professional pest control company familiar with food manufacturing to set bait traps on the perimeter and inside. Have them return on a regular and as needed basis. Have them do a thorough inspection inside and out and follow their advice. They may recommend installing fly elimination lights, powders in crevices, traps, sprays, etc. -Clean, Clean, Clean....open up panels of equipment, pull dipping cabinets away from

the wall, clean underneath refrigerators, clean drains with dedicated brushes, replace old gaskets and seals. -Keep the facility as dry as possible. -Store ingredients and boxes off the floor on racks and leave space to regularly clean behind and underneath all storage areas. -Clean up all spills, right away.

Be sure to consult with your local inspector, regulatory agency, etc. as well to help figure out the best program/fit for your facility. -Install self-closing devices for doors to minimize openings. -Frequently change mop heads.

-Dispose of cleaning rags after single use. -Do not have open food containers. -Inspect inbound trucks, boxes and pallets for cleanliness and possible infestation.

NICRA is pleased to offer a complimentary shuttle to Walt Disney World! Attendance is open to anyone directly involved in the frozen dessert. Are children permitted on the show floor? Children under the age of 16 are not permitted on the tradeshow floor at any time. This trade show standard is strictly enforced to help foster a professional, business-to- business environment for our attendees and exhibitors. Can I receive any discounts with my convention badge? Trick or Treat? Social Media Marketing Dos and Don’ts Target Market

But diving into social media marketing doesn’t have to be scary. To help you navigate this spooky topic, we’ve put together a handy dandy list of social media marketing tricks and treats to help guide you.

Trick: Going in Without A Plan You might be full of enthusiasm and ideas when you’re establishing your brand’s social media presence. And that’s great! Capture that energy and keep notes of all your brilliant ideas. But before you can put your thoughts into action, you need to have a plan. Posting things as you come up with them can be a recipe for disaster. You might start out strong and then run out of steam. How regularly you post on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, or whatever other platforms you’re using has a huge impact on performance. So when you have a surge of great ideas, jot them down and save them.

You can avoid dry spells in your social media feeds by coming up with a posting schedule. There are different approaches to take when planning out content and creating a schedule. Some people will plan out a full month’s worth of posts and others go week by week. If you’re a long-term planner, we suggest keeping some flexibility in your schedule to allow for posts about current events or more time-sensitive topics that may pop up after you’ve made your plan. Trick: Using the Same Content on All Platforms Listen, we understand that you can’t generate a completely new idea for every social media platform you use. However, you can’t just duplicate your posts to cover all your social media bases. Different platforms prioritize different types of content. Instagram is obviously imagebased, so a text post from Twitter isn’t going to make the most engaging content there. Treat: Repurposing Content Just because you can’t copy and paste


the same exact content to all of your social media accounts doesn’t mean you have to come up with original ideas for each platform either. There’s that tried and true saying – work smarter, not harder. You don’t have to reinvent the whole wheel, just tweak it a bit. You can pull content from one source and edit or reformat it to fit multiple platforms. Trick: Going Hashtag Crazy Hashtags are a great way to get eyeballs on your content. But you need to use them thoughtfully. That means only using relevant hashtags as well as using them on the right platforms. Twitter and Instagram are great places to deploy some strategic hashtags. But while hashtagging is possible on Facebook, it doesn’t really function as well and can make your posts look messy and bloated.

Trick: Going it Alone If you’re running a business, chances are you don’t have a ton of time to spend strategizing and scheduling content. And you probably aren’t able to put in the hours to keep up with all the social media marketing dos and don’ts in the ever-changing digital landscape. And that’s ok. Social media and digital marketing can be overwhelming. You’re great at what you already do, so don’t get hung up thinking you need to take on more by doing your social media marketing on your own.

Hopefully by now you have seen quite a few changes in the way NICRA is improving member benefits and communicating with our members. Our main method of communication is still our monthly Bulletin published on the 10th of each month. Up until recently, the NICRA Bulletin has struggled to attract advertisers and we have been offering free ads to those supplier members who contributed an article.

THE GOOD NEWS IS.....
