bites& happenings Kylie Minogue’s new album ‘will cover issues like LGBT+ rights’ Lewis Corner
If you follow Kylie Minogue on Instagram, you’ll be more than aware that she has spent most of 2017 so far in the recording studio working on brand new music. It’s been over three years since ‘Kiss Me Once’ – her last proper studio album (sorry ‘Kylie Christmas’) – was released, but we may not have to wait too much longer to hear what the Aussie has in store. “It looks like her album could be her most political yet too, with talk of tracks covering issues like LGBT rights,” an insider told The Sun. “Kylie just wants to make an album that will start conversations.” However, the first single from the album is set to be a track Kylie has done with UK producer Sigala, who’s had his own huge hits with ‘Easy Love’, ‘Sweet Lovin’ and ‘Say You Do’. “It’s a ‘Spinning Around’ vibe,” Sigala – real name Bruce Fielder – said.
“She wants people to be honest with her. I’m influenced a lot by the Nineties so it makes sense for me to work with her. It fitted really well. “It’s cool that it sounds throwback but it needs to sound modern as well to take Kylie’s career forward.” He added: “It’s about waiting for somebody to tell you how they feel and being like, ‘Come on, let’s get it out in the open and stop messing around. Tell me what you’re waiting for.’ After splitting from Joshua maybe that’s why she picked it because she wants people to be honest with her. It’s for her album, that’s the plan. Hopefully the next single.” The Kylie comeback just got even more exciting…

Pop superstar and film director says only ‘a charlatan and a fool’ would claim to know the facts about her first steps to fame. The Madonna biopic may be going ahead, but it appears the star whose career is reportedly to be made into a movie by Universal will not endorse its production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the script to ‘Blond Ambition’ – a screenplay by Elyse Hollander that topped last year’s Black List of the industry’s best unproduced scripts, and is named after the artist’s 1990 tour – was acquired the studio, and will focus on her early career. But it appears the musician will not be authorising its filming. “Nobody knows what I know and what I have seen,” she said in a post on Instagram in the wake of the news. “Only I can tell my story. Anyone else who tries is a charlatan and a fool. Looking for instant gratification without doing the work. This is a disease in our society,” she concluded.
According to reports, the story for Blond Ambition takes place in the early 1980s, with the star working on “her first album, struggling in a business that treats women badly, while also dealing with a burgeoning love life and the first hints of fame”. Of course there is a chance that Madonna’s animosity towards the film comes from a place of frustration, and that she would prefer to take the reins on her own life-story. She has, after all, starred in and directed a number of films, most recently 2011’s W.E., a drama inspired by the romance of Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII.
Zachary Quinto is free and joyful turning 40 Greg Banks
Zachary Quinto turned 40 this month and described the celebrations as epic. The openly gay actor, best known for TV’s ‘Heroes’ and for playing Spock in the recent ‘Star Trek’ films, took to Instagram to reflect on the milestone birthday. saying that it is impossible for him to find words to describe how grateful he is to his friends and family who organized such an amazing celebration for him to let him know that he is blessed with love. Quinto also paid tribute to boyfriend Miles McMillan ‘without whom none of it would mean anywhere near as much.’ He thanked the painter and model for ‘your generosity of spirit. Your culinary expertise. Your humor. Your heart. Your gifts. Your love. I am above all blessed with you in my life and I cannot wait to keep forging our path together side by side. Happy four year anniversary! I love you madly.’
Rupert Everett, Kieron Richardson, Mary Portas to feature in a documentary about gay life in UK Greg Banks
Rupert Everett and Mary Portas will star in a new series of documentaries ahead of the 50th anniversary of decriminalization of homosexuality in UK. The documentary, to be broadcast on Channel 4, will examine gay politics, social life, culture, and family life since 1967. Gay actor Rupert Everett, who has starred in ‘Shakespeare in Love’, ‘Stardust’, and ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’, will discuss his personal views on gay life in Britain. One segment, called ‘Britain’s Great Gay Buildings’, will feature broadcaster Mary Portas, who is married to a woman, guiding viewers around British buildings that housed extraordinary moments in gay history. Simon Callow, Lord Maheed, and Anna Richardson will also star in the programme. Announcing their birth, Richardson wrote on Twitter “Welcome Chase and Phoebe Rae”, accompanied with photos of the twins’ hospital bracelets. In another documentary, ‘Not Guilty’ will look at the many gay men who continued to face persecution, even after gay sex was decriminalised in 1967. ‘Epidemic’ will chronicle the coalition of gay campaigners, Tory politicians and doctors who fought Aids during the 1980s. And ‘Born This Way’ will examine how pop music changed hearts and minds by bringing gay icons into the living rooms of Britain.

Ricky Martin has landed his own reality TV show Singing sensation Ricky Martin has landed his own reality show. Whilst announcing their upcoming programming, VH1 have revealed that the ‘Livin La Vida Loca’ hitmaker will be getting a television series about his life. The series - which premieres this summer - promises to be a "revealing, never-been-seen account of one of the most private and guarded global superstars of our time”. Meanwhile, Ricky has got a lot to look forward to in the upcoming months as he is busy planning his wedding to his fiancé Jwan Yosef. He said: "We're going to elope and then let's see what happens. I always dreamt of a three-day wedding. I don't know what's going to happen! Let's see ..."
Extreme US Pastor says Ariana Grande is worse than terrorists because she is pro-LGBT Greg Banks
A US pastor has claimed that singer Ariana Grande could be more dangerous than those who took 22 innocent lives at her concert. Over the weekend, Maryland pastor David Whitney delivered a sermon in which he questioned whether Grande’s pro-LGBT position and support of her gay brother could be more dangerous than terror attacks. The pastor elaborated on his extreme views: “I did a little research about what she was about, and everything she stands for is quite eye opening. She is an open advocate for sodomy,” the pastor said, “She states that she did so for a particular reason, because her brother is a sodomite. She threw Christianity out, lock, stock and barrel.” The pastor also attacked the singer’s religious beliefs. On Grande’s practicing Kabbalah, he said: “She has embraced not only sodomy, but a satanic cult religion … it’s called Kabbalah, it is a Jewish cult belief system that is the opposite, in a sense, of our Christian faith. It appears this Ariana is like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, leading a whole generation of young people, and indeed some very young people, to a very dangerous place. [She is] indeed a dangerous woman, leading them down this dangerous road.”
"A lot is happening at the moment. Right now, we're putting this show together. Maybe when we're done we will go on the road again, but I definitely want a bigger family." Ricky is already the father to eight-year-old twins Matteo and Valentino and wants them to travel with him as he thinks it gives them more "stability”. He added: "Everything changes when you become a father. I'm a different person. Every decision I make is based on their well-being, and yes, they travel with me everywhere. We have a tutor, we homeschool them - or we tour school, it's not homeschooling anymore - but I need them with me always. "A lot of people tell me, 'But Rick, your kids need stability,' and I'm like, 'I am their stability. If I'm not around, they won't feel stable' and that's how it goes. In fact, whenever we spend too much time in one city, they go, 'Dad, what's next? Let's go. We're ready.'"
London Heroes: Doctor who treated London attack victims: 'When you think of Muslims think of the surgeon who operated all night, not the terrorist' Rachael Pells
'Hundreds of Muslims were part of the amazing teams that responded to this incident, doctors, nurse, technicians, receptionists, police officer, paramedics and so many more' 09
A London doctor has spoken out in praise of the Muslim members of his team who worked to save victims of the London terror attack. Karim Ahmad, an A&E consultant at The Royal London Hospital urged members of the public to think of Muslims as the hundreds of doctors, nurses and receptionists who responded to the emergency by working through the night, and not the extremists who carried out the attack. Posting a public message on Facebook, he said: “I'm incredibly proud of our team at The Royal London and Barts Health. The response to the call was outstanding from all. There is something the world should know about that team. Three extremist[s] with warped views of the world committed horrific acts of hate. [Hundreds] of Muslims were part of the amazing teams that responded to this incident, doctors, nurse, technicians, receptionists, police officer, paramedics and so many more.”
Britney Spears to Marry Iranan-American Hunk Sam Asghari this year Lucy Middleton
“When you think of the word Muslim I want you to think of the Muslim nurse that ran our casualty triage area, the Muslim surgeon who operated all night, the Muslim technician that helped arrange transport home for discharged casualties, the Muslim security officer that ran out relatives reception area, the Imams from our Muslim chaplaincy that stayed all night to help comfort the casualties and so many more.” Mr Ahmad’s message has so far been liked and shared almost 4,000 times on social media, garnering hundreds of positive messages in response. On Facebook, a user by the name of Kam Marshall wrote: “This post reinforces my faith in humanity - it's so easy to vent anger at all non-Caucasians. Thank you all for being so understanding. The post proves the British are a tolerant and fair society.” Jill Avey said: “So good to hear the truth about the aftermath of an awful event, and to put things into perspective. “A big thank you, again to all the good people involved, just getting on with doing their jobs and selflessly giving whatever was required.” At least seven people died and almost 50 were injured when three men drove a van into pedestrians and attacked people with knives before they were shot dead by police. Since then a similar attack occured against Muslims outside a mosque who were hit and run over by a van. Progressive leaders such as Justin Trudeau and Sadiq Khan, who are some of the biggest champions of the LGBT community, were among the first to call for unity over divisions.
It has been reported that the 35 year old is engaged and expected to marry before the end of the year. According to Radar Online, the Toxic singer is set to wed Sam Asghari, with plans to propose to him before her residency ends in December. The pair met in October 2016 after the model appeared in her music video for Slumber Party. “The wedding will be butterfly-themed, and monarchs will be released when they exchange vows," a source told the publication. The insider then continued: "They’re choreographing their first dance, which will play out the story of how they met." It has also been reported that the star’s sister Jamie Lynn Spears will organise the bachelorette party "in her backyard”. And with a "barbecue hayride with fat-freezing spa treatments and teeth whitening" thought to be involved in the planning, it sounds like it could be one of the biggest bashes of the year. The source then also claimed that Britney has plans to eventually leave her Las Vegas residency in hope of getting pregnant.
10
The performer already has sons Sean and Jayden with her second husband, Kevin Federline. "She’s been seeing a fertility expert in Louisiana and is even saying she’s keen for twins!" the insider gushed. Britney has been married twice before in the past, first tying the knot with close childhood friend Jason Alexander in 2004. But the marriage was annulled just 55 hours later following a petition to the court that stated the star "lacked understanding of her actions". The performer later married dancer Kevin the same year, before welcoming their two sons. But sadly the romance was not to last, with the couple parting ways in 2006.
South Australia’s Law Reform Institute (SALRI) has told the government to abolish the “gay panic” legal defence currently in place in the state. The controversial defence allows people accused of murder to have their charge reduced to manslaughter if they can prove that the killing was triggered by a gay advance. This implies that the perpetrator committed the offence after being “panicked” because of unwanted sexual attention. The advance on the perpetrator does not have to be violent for this defence to be used. A report from SALRI said that the law discriminated on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. It recommended removing the “gay panic” element of the law. John Williams, director of the Law Reform Institute said: “It’s clear to us that the gay panic aspect of the current provocation defence is offensive and should be removed, and that any non-violent sexual advance of any kind should not amount to provocation. “As a basic issue, we also believe that our laws in the 21st century should make it unacceptable for anyone to lose self-control and kill someone.” South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill last year pledged to remove the “outdated and offensive” law. He said his government was waiting on a report from SALRI on the best way forward – the report which has now been released. Williams added that the government should wait for the second part of the report, which will follow shortly. It will advise the government on whether to get rid of provocation as a defence entirely.
South Australia told to abolish ‘gay panic’ murder defence Lucy Middleton
11
The South Australian Law Society argues that scrapping or changing the law is unnecessary, even though critics claim it is an outdated and archaic rule. South Australia is the last jurisdiction to have the defence in place after Queensland amended its criminal law in March. The legislation was passed even after criticism from the anti-LGBT Australian Christian Lobby, which claimed the change would be an attack on women’s rights. Australia does not allow same-sex marriage, although the country is considering a ballot on marriage equality.

The hot new men’s underwear brand everyone’s talking about
19
A new titan is emerging in the world of premium men’s underwear. Mastrioni is the hot new underwear brand making its way across the world. You might have seen it in department stores, or around the waist of models at Men’s Fashion Week, and now their new collections are out. We absolutely love the iconic Silver Triple Panther Waist collection with the repeated Mastrioni monogram on a silver waistband, and you can find it in a number of different colours in the form of trunks and briefs. There’s also a bronze version which will leave you feeling like a greek god. The Angelo White Panther Waist is the more classic waist with the Mastrioni name and its iconic panther symbol. Again, this is available in a variety of colours so we like the option of keeping it clean and sexy with an all-white look or turning up the volume with lime green briefs if you’re feeling more adventurous.
22
The Gold Bordeaux Panther Waist is particularly striking with its metallic gold waistband and bordeaux-coloured trim. The iconic Mastrioni logo is featured here as well and it looks very sharp as black trunks to bring out the gold. These unusual signature waistbands are Mastrioni’s signature statement and we are loving the new trends featured in the new collection. Mastrioni is rolling into quality department stores and select boutiques across the world. For more information visit www.mastrioni.com or email info@mastrioni.com

FASHION HIGHS STYLE GUIDE 20 Menswear Trends for Spring/Summer 2017
The season's trends are as contrasting to say the least! We break down all the shows to pick out 20 key trends for Summer 2017. On one hand, luxury giants are producing polished lessons in style, often with talented new creative directors at the helm. The result is a mash-up of couture hikers, nineties streetwear, a stylish sea breeze, the return of the beanie and sportswear alliances. On the other side of the style divide, Demna Gvasalia and Gosha Rubchinskiy are challenging the fashion establishment and opening a way for the bright young designers to come. Here are 20 notable trends from luxury Men's Fashion Week.
25
1. LUXURY BONDAGE It could be the influence of the Nuboyoshi Araki exhibit on in Paris, or just a rebel move to turn up the temperature for next summer. Either way, one thing is for sure: designers must have scoured the sex shops of Pigalle for inspiration for the harnesses and restraints that appeared on the runway this Fashion Week, raising the sexual tension at Dior Homme and KTZ and accenting with dog collars at Louis Vuitton. As seen at: KTZ, Dior Homme, Louis Vuitton
2. OVERSIZED SHOULDERS A fashion earthquake hit Paris in June, when Demna Gvasalia showed his first Balenciaga menswear collection, starting a one-man bid for super-sized shoulders. Bombers, classic overcoats and suit jackets were all cut with extremely wide shoulders for hybrid appeal. As seen at: Balenciaga
3. THE WINDBREAKER As for mid-season jackets at Prada, Versace and Juun. J, the windbreaker and the parka came in all chromatic shapes and sizes: light parachute-style at Juun. J, printed and tied around the waist at Prada, and hooded at Versace. As seen at: Juun.J, Prada, Versace
26
4. ROPE LINE When fashion and nature collide... Seen from London to Paris via Milan, designers reworked climbing rope as a fashion piece swinging from tailored suits and jackets at Dior Homme or accessorising karibiners at Lanvin and MSGM. As seen at: Dior Homme, Lanvin, MSGM
5. SUPER SHORT SHORTS Not seen since the 1970s, could the ultra short be about to make a comeback for next summer? The jury is out, but while we’re waiting on a fashion consensus, it’s worth noting that we saw pyjama-style versions at Fendi and Comme des Garçons Plus and super short retro sportwear at Gosha Rubchinskiy. As seen at: Gosha Rubchinskiy, Fendi, Comme des Garçons Plus
6. RAINWEAR With a rather damp summer so far in Paris, we welcomed rainwear on the runway. A SS17 essential, sheer at Comme des Garçons Homme Plus, monogrammed at Louis Vuitton and classic yellow at Gucci. As seen at: Comme des Garçons Homme Plus, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dries van Noten
27
7. NINETIES STREETWEAR Fashion loves to regularly revisit the minimalist Nineties look, with the MTV generation now heading up many of the independent labels. Inner-city outerwear couture was an East London design signature for Astrid Andersen and Nasir Mazhar, given a post-Soviet twist at Gosha Rubchinskiy. As seen at: MSGM, Gosha Rubchinskiy, Astrid Andersen
8. YELLOW It’s the color surprise of the season. Yellow accents or even bolder color-blocking lit up the summer catwalks at Hermès, Gucci and Alexander McQueen. As seen at: Gucci, Hermes, Alexander McQueen
9. CHECKERBOARD Black and white checks have come into play, giving the look a shot of cool through optical illusions and print combinations. Seen on the runway for both day and night at Givenchy and Tokyo label Facetasm, as well as distorted at MSGM. As seen at: Facetasm, Givenchy, MSGM
28
10. COUTURE HIKERS The Great Outdoors was the foundation for this Fashion Week, as labels looked to outdoor pursuits and explored a hi-tech utility wardrobe. Designers took the road less traveled with windcheaters, backpacks, walking sandals and hats with the Made in Italy label adding sheen and elevated camping, hiking and varappe equipment to objects of desire. Prada built a whole collection around the theme, with significant use of nylon harking back to the styles that made the house's name back in the 1990s. As seen at: Prada, Nasir Mazhar, Moncler Gamme bleu
11. CREAM Neutral linen tones and sandy shades were a dominant element of the tailored looks at Dries Van Noten and Alexander McQueen and the casual military-inspired pieces at Valentino. A quintessential look for summer. As seen at: Dries van Noten, Valentino, Alexander Mcqueen
12. MARINE ACCENTS With embroidered anchors, marinières and water-repellant materials, a salty breeze made its way onto the runway, led by Alessandro Michele’s aquatic collection for Gucci. As seen at: Topman, Gucci, Off-White
29
13. SPORTSWEAR ALLIANCES If the news that the Vetements collection was based entirely around collaborations with 18 other brands came as a shock, it shouldn't have. Fashion has always been about alliances and collaborations, led by Comme des Garรงons Homme Plus this season, with a transplant version of the Nike Dunk sneaker, Off-White with Umbro and Gosha Rubchinskiy cozying up to Italian sportswear titans Fila, Sergio Tacchini and Kappa for collaborative pieces that we expect to go cult. As seen at: Comme des Garรงons Homme Plus, Gosha Rubchinskiy, Off-White
14. THE CAP It-accessory at Balenciaga, Acne Studios and A.P.C., the cap topped all looks as designers played with color and texture; from red to nude via denim and everything in between. As seen at: A.P.C., Balenciaga, Acne Studios
15. THE BACKPACK Sportswear gains ground each season and for Summer 2017 the backpack is star of the style show. High luxe at Vuitton or a practical at Prada, backpackers can leave for the airport safe in the knowledge that their style game will on point wherever they end up. As seen at: Louis Vuitton, Prada, Givenchy
30
16. THE BUCKET HAT We thought we'd seen the last of these Nineties accessories, but according to the Spring/Summer 2017 catwalks, bucket hats are set to make a strong comeback next season. In keeping with the current fisherman trend, designers sent models out onto the catwalk this Menswear Week sporting a series of stylish variations, from waxed rain hats at Gucci to Christopher Shannon's more conceptual take and Givenchy's plexiglas version. As seen at: Prada, Nasir Mazhar, Gucci, Givenchy
17. JACKETS AROUND THE WAIST A subtle styling detail spotted at Ami and Sacai or with a fresh conceptual twist at J.W. Anderson, the jacket tied around the waist was a surefire sign that cool nonchalance is making a comeback this season. Think Kurt Cobain's signature shirt checkered shirt slung low around his waist. As seen at: Sacai, J.W. Anderson, Ami
18. All-in-ones From fierce fighter pilot to laid-back mechanical chic, designers are showing no signs of expelling the utilitarian all-in-one from their menswear wardrobes any time soon. A bold fashion statement that steals the style of workmen in their warehouses, we predict a strong Spring/Summer 2017 trend for jumpsuits and boilersuits. As seen at: Valentino, Louis Vuitton, Junya Watanabe
19. MIXED MESSAGES Clothing has long been a means of communication, an idea which designers took literally this season. In a society where economic crisis is a harsh reality, the printed message turned clothing into political statements. At Comme des Garçons Plus: ‘The King is Naked’, MSGM asked probing questions (‘What do you feel?’), Gucci proclaimed the ‘future’ and Off-White held up a ‘Mirror’ to the spectators. As seen at: Gucci, MSGM, Christopher Shannon, Off-White
20. CAMOUFLAGE Camouflage is fighting its way to the top of the style stakes next summer as urban adventurers toughen up their look. Spotted at Givenchy, Valentino and Dries Van Noten. As seen at: Dries van Noten, Givenchy, Valentino

ZAC EFRON’S S T Y L E
EVOLUTION From High School Musical’s teenage boy with overgrown bangs to beefy Baywatch hunk, Zac Efron’s style has continued to evolve. His new looks range from California streetwear to dapper red carpet suits. Here’s a look at his style evolution.
Intervi ew by N atasha Dani el s
I
t takes a brave man (and a seriously stacked physique) to wear a pair of Speedos next to
Dwayne Johnson, but Zac Efron isn’t your everyman. The face that launched a thousand crushes in ‘High School Musical’ has, in recent years, grown from teen hunk to bona fide leading man – and one with a serious sense of style.
33
Of course, where stylish men go, brands follow, so it was only a matter of time until Efron landed a big fashion campaign. His partnership with Hugo Boss as the face of the brand’s iconic Hugo Man fragrance aims to celebrate everything confident, charismatic and classic about the pairing and aims to empower men to act on their passions to achieve their goals.
34
To mark the start of their partnership, the 29-year-old speaks about his style icons, his tips for success, and how he dresses a body that’s so ‘Baywatch’-level stacked, even The Rock called him an “animal”.
35
NATASHA DANIELS: As one of the world’s most stylish men, what pieces in your wardrobe and grooming rotation can’t you live without? ZAC EFRON: It might sound boring, but I really do live in black T-shirts. My life can be quite hectic, but with black T-shirts, I can run in them, but they’re classy enough to go somewhere cool or to go to a meeting in. I own dozens. As for grooming products: sunscreen. I can’t live without it, especially in LA. And a dab of cologne, you never know who’ll be smelling you. NATASHA DANIELS: You’ve spent the past few years building a signature look. But who’s your personal style hero?
ZAC EFRON: Steve McQueen, he’s my number one, he’s just classic and cool and never tries too hard. But on the other hand, I also love Michael Jackson. He was so crazily stylish, have you seen his clothes on stage? Unbelievable. NATASHA DANIELS:
You’ve seen your fair share of the red carpet. What are your tips for nailing tailoring? ZAC EFRON: I like to look at the classic style of Hollywood for inspiration, Steve McQueen obviously, and the old-school guys who wore suits so well back in the day, and then emulate them as they always just got it right. I also have a great stylist, Jamie, and we’ve worked together for years, so she just gets it, which helps. I like things simple and classic, but I guess I’m lucky that I fit things off the rack pretty well, so we don’t tend to have to do too many adjustments.
NATASHA DANIELS: What’s your go-to day off look? ZAC EFRON: On my days off, I’m usually working on something anyway, how sad is that? So it’s pretty much what I always wear – jeans, a bomber, a T-shirt. I haven’t worn a tracksuit for, like, two-and-a-half years, but this year I’m going to take a break and chill out in one for sure. NATASHA DANIELS: We’ve seen you looking bulked up for Baywatch, how are you finding dressing for a more athletic shape? ZAC EFRON: Believe it or not, I wasn’t that much heavier or bulkier before; I just got leaner. I was pretty much the same size in measurements, but during Baywatch, I had basically no body fat. I wanted to look more toned, like Bruce Lee, because obviously in terms of bulking I didn’t want to compete with The Rock. Luckily I didn’t have to change it too much; my style is already quite athletic, so it worked. That’d be my advice for guys with a muscular physique – go for athleisure. NATASHA DANIELS: You’re a well-known actor and now you’re moving into producing films too, so what are your tips for success? ZAC EFRON: It’s a cliché, but it’s true – life really does begin at the end of your comfort zone. Don’t ever be scared to try something new; I make sure I try something new every day. If you fail, so what? You tried, and that’s what counts in terms of success. In the long term, making those leaps will pay off. Even if it’s just going for a run and seeing if you can get a six-minute mile. Push yourself, make time for yourself and success will come.
Zac Efron is the ambassador of the new HUGO MAN campaign #YourTimeIsNow, a movement set to energise younger generations to act on their passions and fulfil their goals.

The dark arts
of Achraf Amiri
A unique provocateur has caught the eye of Horizon Magazine’s editorial team. Nobody does fashion quite like the artist and illustrator Achraf Amiri. The self-proclaimed "hidden son of the Addams family produces art that possesses style, controversy, sensuality, a raw and brutal irony and of course a wicked sense of humour.
39
His work both celebrates and critiques pop culture in the most unique and sometimes outrageous ways, and of course not even the biggest names from film, fashion or music are immune. Take a journey through Amiri’s wicked and fantastic interpretations and reinterpretations of today’s pop culture.

Born in Brussels, Amiri grew up inspired by the world around him. His works is always filled with self-reflection. Going on from the macabre to pure irony, his “illustrashions” (as he calls them) are more than simple drawings — they elicit real emotions. In 2010, after graduating as a Graphic Designer from Saint-Lukas Brussels, he travelled to Naples and finally based himself in London in 2011, where he made his debut as an independent creative.
40
Supported by a number of international press and media agencies, ELLE Magazine Belgium encouraged him to launch his work internationally. Amiri quickly developed a strong following via artworks he was commissioned to create for international luxury brands and a series of international fashion corporations and publications, including Nike, ELLE, Vogue, Sorapol and Rootstein Display Mannequins.
41
Amiri’s work continues to shock, inspire and impress. As the list of his clients and subjects continues to grow, so too does his international following.

No. 7 Men’s Protect & Perfect Intense Serum
In our eyes this is one of the most underrated skincare brands. As our skin ages, its structure is weakened, resulting in lines, wrinkles and a dull appearance. The serum is easily absorbed into the skin, leaving it feeling firmer, smoother and looking healthier. After just 2 weeks of use, skin looks younger, feels lifted and skin texture feels improved. In 4 weeks, deep lines, wrinkles and even pores appear visibly reduced. After 2 months continued use, over three quarters of men agreed this was the best anti-ageing product they had ever used. We recommend you use this underneath your No7 Men moisturises so skin is fully hydrated and energised.

VAMPIRE HAIR TREATMENTS Dr Dray’s Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) with LED Therapy
You may have heard of Vampire facials which became popular when Kim Kardashian and her posse of celebrities popularised the procedure. The more accurate name for the procedure is Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy or PRP. We spoke to Dr. Dray about the unique new procedure now available for hair.
Dr Dray’s PRP protocol is an excellent treatment to not only address hair loss, but is recommended for improving the condition of fine, limp or stressed while improving the condition of the scalp. Unlike many of the imitation clinics around, the treatment is administered using the mesotherapy gun instead of a syringe to ensure that there is an even and uniform coverage of the treatment area, which means that luckily the experience is a lot more comfortable and less painful to undergo.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Since each person’s hair condition is unique and influenced by their personal circumstances (I.e. stress, hormonal, hereditary, products etc) a consultation is required to understand the cause of the hair issue and the best course of treatments to improve the condition and see results. After your consultation with the doctor, a small amount of blood is taken from which the unique serum will be extracted. The plasma, the most dynamic and healing part of the blood is prepared with a specific hair cocktail as a serum in the clinic, and once ready the serum is injected into the scalp using the mesotherapy gun. Is it painful? It feels like small pinches on the scalp so most people will not find it painful at all. But be advised that many clinics aren’t equipped with Dr. Dray’s equipment and experience, and tend to inject the serum outright into the scalp using a syringe, which might sting a bit more without some sort of numbing cream.
50
THE SCIENCE
The cocktail specifically reinforces the root of the hair to strengthen it and further stimulates the hair cells to produce new hair, providing there is still some life in the hair follicle. PRP boosts this cocktail as it is highly concentrated with regrowth factors that are responsible for cellular rejuvenation. To further enhance the effects of PRP, Dr Dray’s protocol includes LED therapy (light emitting diodes), where a program is selected according to the problem being addressed. It also improves the health and condition of the scalp, particularly if harsh products have been used previously that have affected the skin.
Dr. Dray is the renowned gerontologist who invented the Mesolift and is a pioneer in cosmetic medicine. His 25 years of experience combined with his natural methods and excellent results have earned him worldwide fame and recognition. All the cutting-edge treatments are available at either his London or Paris clinics.
THE MAGIC
PRP procedures are growing in popularity across the world because the results speak for themselves. Due to the life-cycle of the hair, you do not expect to see immediate results in the way that you would using dermal fillers on your face, for example, but we certainly did get a sense that the scalp felt more nourished and revitalised. Over time I felt that re-stimulating the hair follicles on the scalp with a boosting cocktail from within really did make a difference. To really see a difference in your hair it is recommended to repeat the treatment at least several times over the course of the year. After having experienced the treatment once, I would certainly go back for more as I did feel that the procedure gave my scalp the ‘boost’ it needed to regenerate and ‘refuel’, and I can only imagine that doing this a few more times would be just what my hair needs.

FOODS TO KEEP YOU ENERGISED FOR HOURS Rachel Meltzer Warren and Darius Stone
Sadly, most of the superfoods that can unlock serious energy potential aren’t advertised with blaring signs on billboards or with massive logos on athletes’ jerseys. In fact most of them are hidden away in the produce section of your local supermarket. For those of us looking for some for some energy to go on and on, day or night, here are 7 foods that will keep you going!
Watermelon At 93 percent H2O, this juicy orb is the fruit equivalent of an IV drip. “Most people don't realize that water-rich foods can contribute up to 20 percent of your fluid needs for the day,” says Antonucci. Research suggests that even mild dehydration is linked with fatigue, because water is needed to sustain almost all your body’s functions. A cup and a half of cubed melon is as hydrating as an eight-ounce glass of water, and it’s also naturally endowed with vitamins A, B6, and C, all of which have their own energizing properties. Try this: Toss cubes with feta, olive oil, lime juice, and chopped fresh mint leaves. 53
Almonds A quarter-cup serving of these nuts delivers 30 percent of the magnesium you need each day—an impressive figure, considering that nearly half of all Americans don’t get enough of the mineral, according to government data. Being low on magnesium can make you drag, because your body uses it to generate ATP, the molecule that transports energy between cells. Almonds are also an excellent source of B vitamins like folate and riboflavin, which help you convert calories into fuel. Try this:
Raisins
Snacking on nuts or nut butters is the obvious strategy. But you can also use almond flour (from ground almonds) in place of breadcrumbs, or to replace one-quarter of the flour in baked goods.
Popping a few during your morning jog can put literal spring in your step. “Athletes like them for their quick hit of carbs and electrolytes,” says Tara Gidus Collingwood, R.D., a sports dietitian in Orlando. One study found that raisins were just as effective at keeping runners’ stamina up as were carbohydrate-based snacks designed for endurance. Athletes who ate either one during a 5-K shaved one minute off their race time, compared with those who only drank water. The ideal amount, per the study, is one ounce—about two mini boxes. Try this: Jump-start your a.m. by adding raisins, paired with nuts, to your cereal or yogurt. “Nuts have fat, protein, and fiber, keeping you going over the long haul, and the carbs in raisins invigorate you short term,” says Collingwood.
Endamame Soy beans are a good source of folate, a B vitamin that plays a crucial role in turning food into energy. One cup of the beans (shelled) gives you a full day’s worth of the vitamin, along with bonus magnesium and riboflavin, two minerals that provide extra pep. If you’re concerned about the GMOs in soy, choose organic. Try this: Steam edamame in the pod and sprinkle with chili powder and lime salt, or toss into cauliflower rice to bump up the meal’s staying power.
54
Chia Seeds Chia seeds’ concentration of protein, fiber, and energy-revving nutrients like magnesium and iron will keep you humming through the day. One study found that a DIY chia seed sports drink fueled workouts just as well as a store-bought one—sans added sugars. Try this: Make your own citrusy energy drink by mixing two tablespoons of chia seeds with two cups of water, the juice of half a lemon or lime, and one tablespoon of honey or maple syrup. Refrigerate for two to three hours, then stir. You can also mix the seeds into yogurt or oatmeal for a quick fix. (And if you just can’t deal with the gummy texture, try hemp seeds instead.)
Sardines Never tried these rich little fish? Time to give them a shot. Sardines are a top source of iron, which is crucial in transporting oxygen around your body—and oxygen feeds your muscles to keep them moving. Plus, these guys pack CoQ10, a vital player in your cells’ powerhouse, the mitochondria. Try this: Chop them and mix with cooked pasta, roasted cauliflower florets, red pepper flakes, and olive oil. Still not comfortable with the tiny fish? You can find similar amounts of iron in beef, shellfish, spinach, and pumpkin seeds.
Strawberries Oranges seem to get all the vitamin C glory, but strawberries are, ounce for ounce, a superior source. When researchers gave overweight adults who were trying to shed pounds a daily dose of C, the test subjects felt less tired during 60-minute treadmill walking sessions than those who weren’t taking the vitamin, according to a study in the journal Nutrition. “Foods with vitamin C also help your body absorb more fatigue-fighting iron,” says Collingwood. One cup of strawberries will deliver 89 milligrams of vitamin C, more than your daily requirement of 75 milligrams. Try this: Top a spinach salad with sliced strawberries to reap the benefits of C plus iron from leafy greens. 55

THE HEALTHY MAN’S GUIDE TO CHEESE
Want to safe-guard your liver and iron-clad your health all at once? Then, as new research from Texas A&M University has found, indulging in a slice or three of cheese could be the key to doing so, by grating away your chance of developing liver cancer and maturing your liver health at the same time. How? Through a compound called 'spermidine' that's found in aged cheeses such as brie and cheddar. So, when you serve up a slice, you can revel in the knowledge that your life expectancy could also be increasing by a pleasant 25%.
57
E AT WH E E L S O F F O RT U N E If the best your fridge has to offer is cheddar and a couple of Dairylea triangles, it’s time you took stock. Research points to fromage as the Frenchman’s secret ingredient to a long life, packing anti-cancer benefits. But choose your protein-rich platter carefully. “The ideal selection includes hard, soft and blue,” says Nigel White, secretary of the British Cheese Board. “Serve at room temperature to allow the flavour to develop.” Now, take these on board.
Mozzarella di bufala (soft)
This southern Italian offering is made from buffalo milk which, with almost twice the fat of cow milk, tastes decadently superior. Each ball also serves up the best combination of protein and calories to sustain energy and repair muscle during and after training.
Brie (bloomy)
This mild, fruity crowd pleaser can lower your risk of type 2 diabetes by 12% if you go for the goo twice a week, according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. But it must be ripe and prime for eating. “There shouldn’t be a white line in the middle,” says British cheese specialist Charles Bradford.
Gruyère (hard)
This Swiss cheese is the calcium king. People with healthy levels of the mineral have a 25% lower risk of all-cause death than those without. Plus calcium from food (unlike supplements) won’t up your risk of a heart attack. Hard cheese to dodge hard knocks.
Roquefort (blue)
“All roquefort comes from the same breed of sheep,” says White. “Then, it’s ripened in France’s Combalou caves.” This process gives the cheese its anti-inflammatory qualities, so contrary to what you’ve heard about the stinky stuff, it’s armour for your heart.

Y OU R B EL L Y -B ANI S HI NG BIBLE ALL THE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO SHED ABDOMEN FAT ONCE AND FOR ALL.
We’ve all dreamt of having those perfect six-pack abs but for most of us the main obstacle is often a layer of fat sitting against our mid-section. We’re saving you the hassle by compiling all the important information on this topic in one place so you know the clinically proven facts about how to banish it for good.
THE GIST Toning your abdominal area is a common goal for many people, and can be frustrating to deal with. A high percentage of body fat around your stomach can be a signal for more serious health problems. Although it may seem difficult, busting the fat is in fact possible and may require you to make some lifestyle changes. Studies have shown that regular, moderate-intensity cardio exercise is one of the best ways to reduce stomach fat. Adding in adequate exercise supported by a healthy diet can help you reach your goals.
59
E X E R C ISE ST R AT EGY
1. Include steady state cardio. Steady state cardio is any aerobic exercise that keeps your heart rate at a relatively stable level for at least 10 minutes. This type of exercise will help burn calories and support your metabolism. In general, it's recommended to get at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity each week (or 30 minutes five days a week). Aim for a mix of moderate- and high-intensity activity. This combination will burn calories from fat in addition to providing cardiovascular benefits. For example this can include: jogging/walking, running, biking, hiking, using the stair-master or elliptical, swimming or dancing. Some studies even suggest up to 60 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio daily for the most effective reduction in stomach fat.
2. Work out in the mornings. Try to get in your cardio exercises in the morning before eating your first meal. Exercising in this fasted state means your body will be using energy from its storage form — fat. Try to include any type of cardio exercise in the morning. Even a quick 20 – 30 minute walk can help your body use its excess fat stores for energy. Getting up earlier in the morning may be difficult for some, but if you try making it a priority, after a few weeks your body and mind will get used to the new routine. Make sure you go to bed earlier as well, as it's important to get adequate rest.
3. Include abdominal and core-toning exercises. Although cardio is responsible for burning and reducing overall body fat, adding in some light strength training can help tone your stomach and give you a more defined look once the fat is shredded. Core toning exercises will help strengthen muscles but it’s not possible to "spot treat" this area. Doing abdominal exercises won't cause you to lose fat only around your waist— it's a myth!
Include abdominal and core-toning exercises.
THE CARDIO PLAN
1. Run, jog or spin. Running and jogging is a great steady-state cardio exercise to burn fat. If you can jog fast or run, you'll burn more calories and help decrease body fat. In general, you can burn about 100 calories per mile when you're running. In addition, running is a great exercise for cardiovascular health. If you're not a runner, start slow. You can start with jogging a mile first and slowly increase your distance or pace over the course of several weeks. Do a spin class or include high intensity biking. Spin classes and high intensity biking is another great exercise that will burn large amounts of calories and fat because you can control your speed and resistance on the bike. The harder you work and the faster you pedal, the better fat burn you'll get!
2. Step aerobics. Step aerobics is a another great cardio class to help you burn calories and fat. It's particularly effective due to it's focus on your legs and glutes. These large muscle groups make you work up a sweat causing you to burn calories and fat. You may burn up to 400 calories in 30 minutes if you work out at your hardest intensity. If you haven't done a step aerobics class, start slowly. Use a smaller step and any modifications to movements that are too difficult for you. Over time, you can grow your comfort zone.
3. Do high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Another type of cardio activity is HIIT. This type of cardio burns more calories from fat and also raises your metabolism for about 24 hours after you've completed the workout. During HIIT you alternate between short bouts of very high-intensity cardio and short bouts of more moderate-intensity cardio. You do not spend as much time doing HIIT compared to steady state cardio exercises, usually about 20 minutes (with an additional 5 minutes at the beginning and end for a warm up and cool-down). They are intended to be shorter, more vigorous exercises. Studies have shown that there is a close relationship between the intensity of cardio exercises and the reduction of stomach fat. Doing HIIT may be one of the most effective options for reducing abdominal fat! 61
E AT I N G R I G H T
Limit carbohydrates. Studies have shown that low-carb and low-calorie diets resulted not only in faster initial weight loss, but also were the most effective at reducing stomach fat. Carbohydrates are found in a wide range of foods including: dairy products, fruits, starchy vegetables, grains and legumes. However, focus more on limiting carbohydrates from foods like: sweets or sweetened beverages, breads, rice, pasta, chips, crackers or pastries. While these foods do contain other nutrients, these same nutrients are also found in other food groups. Consume carbohydrates that also provide your body with a lot of other nutrients like fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals, or antioxidants. Foods like fruits, starchy, vegetables, and dairy all contain a lot of other vital nutrients and should be included in your diet. Low-carb diets focus on minimizing carbohydrates, not eliminating them. Some carbohydrates are necessary for your body to function optimally.
Monitor calories. In addition to following a low-carb diet, it's also been shown to be beneficial to follow a lower calorie diet. Studies have shown that the combination of low-calorie and low-carb diets result in the highest reduction in stomach fat. A low-calorie diet refers to a variety of differing calorie levels. The total amount of calories recommended will be different for everyone based on age, gender, weight and activity level. In general, it's safe to cut out about 500 calories daily from your diet. This usually results in about one pound of weight loss each week. Use a calorie tracker or online program to count how many calories you currently consume in a day. Subtract 500 from that number to figure out your initial daily calorie goal. When cutting calories, it's important to not cut out too many calories. Eating less than about 1,200 calories daily puts you at risk for nutrient deficiencies, loss of muscle mass, and fatigue.
62
Eat the right types of fat. There are a few different types of dietary fat that you can consume. Some have been shown to be healthier, whereas others have been shown to increase fat around your stomach and abdominal organs. Studies have shown that regular consumption of saturated fats was related to increased stomach and visceral fat. Saturated fat is found in foods like: full fat dairy products, processed meats, fatty cuts of meat, butter, and fried foods. Instead of eating foods higher in saturated fat, choose leaner sources of some foods. For example, choose lean cuts of beef or low-fat dairy products. Also, use fats like olive oil, coconut oil or canola oil for cooking instead of butter. Instead of foods higher in saturated fat, consume foods that are higher in heart healthy unsaturated fats and omega-3 fats. These foods include: fatty fish (like salmon, mackerel, tuna or sardines), olives or olive oil, nuts and nut butters, seeds and avocado.
63
Increase the amount of fruits andvegetables you eat. When you're following a lower carb, lower calorie diet, it's important to focus on eating an adequate amount of fruits and vegetables each day. Both of these foods are very nutrient dense — they contain a lot of fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants for very few calories. In general, it's recommended to consume about five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables each day. However, when you're also focusing on limiting carbs, do not consume more than one to two servings of fruit daily or one to two servings of starchy vegetables daily. Include a lot of non-starchy vegetables like: leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, tomatoes, brussels sprouts, zucchini, green beans, asparagus, mushrooms or eggplant.
Increase the amount of fruits and vegetables you eat.

CELEBRATING an Icon:
JEAN PAUL GAULTIER 65
One of the most influential and notable designers who many claim paved the way for other controversialists such as Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier is best known for his unique fashion house and his seven-year tenure as the head designer for Hermès.
In this issue, Horizon takes a moment to celebrate the man whose work has helped shape pop culture as we know it. He designed Madonna’s iconic conical bra along with her most iconic tour and photographic costumes. This is just one of the many iconic and ground-breaking creations he has made that helped redefine how we perceive beauty, fashion and gender. His rebellious approach of requiring models who didn’t look like models helped change the face of fashion and was
a first on the haute couture catwalks of the world. His other A-list collaborations include names ranging from Kylie Minogue to Dita Von Teese and even the famous Spanish director Pedro Almodovar.
66
His Story Born in 1952 in the Paris suburb of Arcueil, he was interested in fashion from a young age but was never formerly trained in design. Aged 18, whilst still at school, he joined the house of Pierre Cardin working there after lessons, which lead him to fail his school exams. His time at Cardin was short, owing to redundancies, and he moved on to Jacques Esterel where he learnt much of what was to become his signature style, and then to the couture house Patou. Returning to Cardin in 1974, he was sent to Manila to represent the company there.
67
"When I started my career, I went to work with Pierre Cardin. At that time, of course, I didn't have my line or whatever, so I didn't have my style at all. I was doing Cardin. So I was sketching, imagining what he would love," Gaultier told US Vogue in 2004. "And afterwards, when I was at Patou, Michel Goma was the designer so I was in the spirit of Michel Goma. I quite loved that. He showed his debut collection in 1976, having raised substantial finances with his partner Francis Menuge, but did not establish his own design house until 1982 with the backing of Japanese consortium Kashiyama. Gaultier soon became known as "l'enfant terrible" of fashion because of his penchant for challenging the then-standard views of fashion; reworking them and infusing ideas of his own. His work has been characterised by a stylistic consistency since his very first collection. Many of his collections show women adopting masculine attire, or men wearing skirts, corsets, and dresses with trains. "People reacted much better to me in the UK, which was where it was all happening," he told The Telegraph in 2010. "Jean Muir was big at the time here and she was fabulous, as was Zandra Rhodes. You could see the craziness in the British people, but I couldn't move because I'd already started in Paris.
In September 1985 he opened his first boutique on 6 Rue
Vivienne,
Paris.
He
became
internationally
recognised when he designed the costumes for Madonna's Blond Ambition tour in 1990. The conical bras and basques he created for her now rank among some of the most iconic designs in history. Gaultier has since said he had no idea that they would become so important. "I was a fan of Madonna's so I was pleased to collaborate with her for that reason - not because it would be good for my career," he told The Telegraph in 2010. He designed stage costumes again for Madonna for her 2006 Confessions tour and her 2012 MDNA Tour. In the same year, Gaultier's professional success coincided with personal tragedy when his lover and business partner Francis Menuge became seriously ill and died of AIDS. In January 1992, he published a largely pictorial biography called A nous deux la mode. In the same year he introduced Gaultier Jeans, as well as accessories and perfumes. The following year he launched his signature scent in a glass bottle shaped like a corseted figure.
69
In 1993, Gaultier became a co-presenter on television show Eurotrash, a magazine-format show which focused on the weird and wonderful from around the world. He showed his debut couture collection in 1997. In July 1999, a French fashion house invested $15 million in his business as part of a deal which Gaultier described as "a dream marriage". He has designed the wardrobe of a number motion pictures, including Luc Besson's ‘The Fifth Element’, Pedro Almodóvar's ‘Kika’, Peter Greenaway's ‘The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover’, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's ‘The City of Lost Children’. In July 2001, the designer was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. "Gaultier changed so many things: the creative process, sexuality in fashion," Balenciaga creative director Nicolas Ghesquière, Gaultier's former-assistant, told WWD. In 2003, Gaultier succeeded Martin Margiela as the head designer at Hermès, and debuted his first haute-couture collection for autumn/winter 2004-05. He designed the costumes for Kylie Minogue's international KYLIEX2008 tour in 2008. He became the latest designer to collaborate with US retail giant Target in May 2009 to produce an affordable line. It was announced in March 2010 that he would receive an Inspiration Award for his lifetime contribution to men's fashion and the fight against AIDS. He collected the prize at the AmfAR awards in New York on June 3. In the same year, Gaultier ended his tenure at Hermès, with the spring/summer 2011 collection being his last for the house. He launched his first-ever swimwear collection, in collaboration with La Perla, in July 2011. Gaultier was appointed Diet Coke's new creative director in March 2012. His role involved providing creative input into company's advertising campaigns, retail events and new online projects, as well as designing limited-edition bottles. He followed in the footsteps of Karl Lagerfeld, Matthew Williamson, Gianfranco Ferre, Marni and Roberto Cavalli who had also created new bottle designs for Diet Coke. Most recently in 2015 an exhibition of his creations entitled The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk’ toured across the world received critical acclaim for immortalising his contributions to fashion, pop culture, art, and for helping shape perceptions on gender and sexuality.

Vanessa Bell spent her life surrounded by famous people, and has come to be remembered primarily as Virginia Woolf’s sister. But she was one of the most interesting characters of her day and – from the look of this exhibition – one of its finest artists too.

Babak Koravi Expressions of the Mind A unique insight into the world of Babak Koravi. This contemporary artist is showing abstract mixed-media pieces at the Expo Chanciano in Italy, in association with the Chanciano Art Museum. Based in the UK, Koravi has developed an individual style of painting that does not follow or adhere to any classically recognised conventions. His work predominantly consists of oil on canvas, but his signature often lies in the hidden details and three-dimensionality of his pieces.

IN REVIEW CINEMA A SEASON OF FILMS ON THE HORIZON
Tom of Finland Director: Dome Karukoski Cast: Pekka Strang, Lauri Tilkanen, Niklas Hogner
Touko Laaksonen, a decorated officer, returns home after a harrowing and heroic experience serving his country in World War II, but life in Finland during peacetime proves equally distressing. He finds post-war Helsinki rampant with homophobic persecution, and men around him even being pressured to marry women and have children. Touko finds refuge in his liberating art, specialising in homoerotic drawings of muscular men, free of inhabitations. His work – made famous by his signature ‘Tom of Finland’ – became the emblem of a generation of men and fanned the flames of a gay revolution.
Boys on Film 16: Possession Directors: Nickolas Bird, Eleanor Sharpe
BOYS ON FILM is celebrating its sixteen years with an astonishing selection of the latest international gay short films. Featuring golden boys, teenage lust, self-conscious dolls, chance encounters and a vengeful creature, alongside a holiday romance and a young man’s attempt to conceal his sexuality from his mum, BOYS ON FILM 16 is the most possessive collection yet.

The Danish Girl Director: Tom Hooper Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander, Amber Heard
A touching love story loosely inspired by the lives of Danish artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. Lili and Gerda's marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili's groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.
The Levelling Director: Hope Dickson Leach Cast: Ellie Kendrick, David Troughton
A stunning debut feature by writer-director Hope Dickson Leach, starring Ellie Kendrick (Game of Thrones) and David Troughton (The Archers). Against the backdrop of the floods that devastated her home, Clover (Kendrick) returns to her family farm to confront her estranged father, Aubrey (Troughton). Shadowed by ill-remembered conflicts and unspoken regrets, the pair set out to heal their fractious yet still loving relationship. Dickson Leach’s showcases her burgeoning skill as a filmmaker to watch, displaying a remarkable ability to craft drama from silence and inference. Troughton gives a finely tempered performance, perfectly matched by Kendrick’s extraordinary presence in the breakout role of the year.
Remembering the Man Directors: Nickolas Bird, Eleanor Sharpe
Following on from the hugely successful film Holding the Man, here comes the documentary REMEMBERING THE MAN – the real life account of the lives, love and loss of long-time partners Timothy Conigrave and John Caleo. At a prestigious Catholic boys school in Melbourne 1974, Tim Conigrave and John Caleo fell madly in love. Their passionate, tempestuous, operatic romance lasted for 16 years, facing disapproval, temptation, separation, and the looming shadow of the Grim Reaper. Their star crossed relationship was immortalised in Timothy Conigrave’s memoir Holding the Man, and has been adapted for stage and screen. REMEMBERING THE MAN is a feature length documentary based on a long lost audio recording with Timothy Conigrave. This documentary uncovers the true story of how Romeo met Romeo; and what happened ever after.
