KARLEIGH NICHOLLS – HEAD OF MATHEMATICS

When students make a mistake in math, their brain grows, synapses fire, and connections are made. Dr Jo Boaler

In order to make mistakes, students need to feel comfortable in their learning environment. In our Mathematics classrooms this is a focus for our Department, ensuring the girls feel comfortable expressing their ideas and solutions in group and individual situations. When students were asked how they feel in their Mathematics classroom, they responded as follows:

‘In my math class I feel free to explore new concepts in a judgement-free zone with likeminded peers. I’m not afraid to admit I don’t understand something.’

‘The support within the classroom environment significantly altered how I learned and practised Maths this year. I feel the class size helped develop a stronger connection between the students and the teacher; and, I feel, this relationship has helped me to develop the confidence to voice more queries in class and further engage with content.’

Continuing to build safe environments for our students will remain a focus for our Department.

In the last week of Term 4 the Mathematics Department held a Maths Exploration Day. This was an opportunity for the Year 7 cohort to explore Mathematics through a range of different activities. The girls used logical thinking to code a Rover, explored number patterns and card games, used algorithms to find their ideal friend, based on values, and engaged with paper planes to evaluate specific criteria relevant to our Senior Assessment. The girls had an enjoyable morning and we hope to run a similar event next year.
