The science behind our skin and wh I have been forced into writing the article after seeing how many â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;medispasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; are over using peels with no understanding of consequence. The over exfoliation all started with peels in the 90â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s through and now microdermabrasion and a large number of different peels on the market, unfortunately in the wrong hands these treatments could be resulting in more damage to the skin. As a therapist our number one job is to prevent premature ageing and improve the health of our clients The epidermis is important as it is a major line of the skin barrier defense and needs to be protected nourished and cared for Unfortunately when the skin is exposed to excessive use of peels and microdermabrasion the skin can reduces the skins defense to environmental, lifestyle and chemical which our skin comes into contact daily. The skin is a very sophisticated organ with protection and defense systems in the epidermis and dermis. Lastly the skin must be able to maintain its integrity by repairing itself, to be able to carry out this protection. This protection function mostly takes place in the dermis Karatin is a hydrophobic cell with a life or around 10-15 days from mitosis to arriving in the stratum corneum layer as a corneocyte, it will then take 3-5 day, other cells in the epidermis take 28-30 days. The superficial layer or the stratum cornuem is responsible for making and protecting the underlying dermis and subcutaneous layers. The superficial layer helps to protect the body from chemical attacks by the cornecytes which is filled with the hard insoluble protein keratin. Skins defence The acid mantle is what we always want to ensure is being protected it has a PH between 4 and 5.5. It has all the properties required to stop nonresident bacteria from developing and maintain the skins barrier. It is made up of a mixture of sweat, sebum, and lipids to which antibiotic peptides and dercidins synthesis by the sweat glands. There are three species of bacteria staphylococcus, propionibacterium and corynebacterium. They are all particularly well adapted to withstand the acid environment and antibiotic peptides. The micro flora found in the acid mantle is an important part of human skin to its function and activities. Maintaining the PH of the skin is imperative to avoid the proliferation of pathogens and an excess or lack of hygiene upsets the equilibrium of this cutaneous flora Acid mantle also maintains hydration; free water from the dermis continually crosses the epidermis by capillarity and evaporates from the surface of the skin, known as the Tran’s epidermal water loss or TEWL (on average9g/ m2 of skin per hour). Also responsible for creating an environment for the skin flora to reside. The hydrolipidic film (acid mantle) plays the important role of maintain epidermal hydration by slowing down trans-dermal water loss (TEWL) Plus creating a physical barrier to friction and movement. The skin is an amazing organ and is the largest organ of the body its defense system is extremely complex where different types of cells act together. Langerhans cells (LC’s) which are dendritic cells developed in bone marrow. LC’s are located above the basal layer, these cells are large cells with long branching extensions or dendrites some of these reach the demo epidermal junction; others will come close to the stratum corneum. If an antigen penetrates and crossed the horney layer cells take charge of it and leave the epidermis. Within less than 6 hours they may be found in dermal lymphatic vessels where they pass the antigen to L-lymphocytes release the immunological cascade reaction to eliminate the antigen and keep it in ‘immunological memory’ If the same antigen again penetrates the epidermis every year later it will be immediately recognized and the immunological reaction will be more rapid MediSpa | Beauty Essentials | Spa Packages | Facial & Body Therapies http://www.day-spa-perth.com.au/

The science behind our skin and wh and effective. If the antigen however manages to cross this first line of defense the macrophages of the dermis detect and eliminate it. This duo is complemented by the case of an infection, produces more cytokine IL1, which stimulates T-lymphocyte activity. Some treatments want to create an inflammatory response but if this is not what you are trying to achieve it is hard to believe why one would compromise the skin by subjecting it to constant removal, the skins first line of defense. So it is fair to say we have established that the removal of the acid mantle on a daily basis will lead to an imbalance of the skin. The use of exfoliates and self diagnosis can make issues. As a result severe dryness occurs due to blocking the pilosbacous duct. Over use of micro and peels can create the same issue, creating excess oil and larger pores â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Now one very unbalanced environment has been created Exfoliation is an important step in cleansing the face and body. It removes dead skin cells that have accumulated on the top layer of the dermis. Therapists use the peeling and micro but unfortunately can be overused. Many therapists will continually ablative removing the epidermis; this is why I have written this article. We had a client who had skin needling and microdermabrasion; she then visited another medi spa (someone she always visits prior) unfortunately this dermal therapist gave her incorrect information and insisted on having a peel less than two weeks after her treatment- I was horrified- it had left her skin dry and it is obvious from looking at her skin that her acid mantle had been compromised and her skin balance was altered dramatically. It frustrates me greatly when I see therapist doing treatments for the good of their pockets and not for the client. The overuse of professional peel and ad continual peeling or abrading the skin is not the answer to fixing wrinkles, pigmentation and acne My other big issue is the lack of support or additional treatment after a peeling program. The clients are often only prescribed a glycolic cream and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s it. Feeding the skin is imperturbable, many salons/ clinics/ spas/ medi spas after the peel or micro with no further nutrition- Sure they are cheaper, but at what cost? Nourishing and feeding the skin is extremely important to create a healthy skin When to peel? Skin conditions such as pigment and aging are a large part of our clients concerns. The

hen is too much exfoliating to much! actives required to make changes to their skin conditions are often in the vitamin coenzyme families and need to reach the epidermis and dermis to be effective, they are below the granular layer and dermal epidermal junction. This is where peeling and micros is a useful tool to help the penetration of active ingredients. Feed- feed- feed your skin Removal of the upper layers of the epidermis includes many cells in addition to this removal a certain amount of trauma occurs within the dermis. This will involve fibroblast stimulation; increasing blood circulation and the dermal reserve (glycosaminogltcans) are stimulated to react to this trauma plumper dermis. Health Watch: Bad pos Most of the population suffers from symptoms due to bad posture. When I took at good look I noticed how forward my neck/head posture was. This is normally caused by weak neck muscles, seated job positions, incorrect sleeping posture and extended computer and TV Over time poor posture creates a big problem affecting you spine, shoulders, hips and knees. It can cause a cascade of structural flaws that leads to back and joint pain, flexibility and muscles is compromised this in turn effect exercise and health and when we cannot this can cause nerve constriction. This is when the spine changes in shape the resulting movements or subluxation can put pressure on the surrounding spinal nerves that connect to the spinal come from all over the body, these pinched nerves can not only cause neck and back pain but may also cause pain in other related areas of the body. Ways to assess your posture is to: Wear something snug and take two full body photos one from the front and one from behind, relax your muscles and stand as tall as you can, feet hipwidth apart then refer to the list below to diagnose your posture problem. Look at your ear, if it is in front of the midpoint of your shoulder your head is too far forward 2. Can you see your shoulder blade? If yes, that means your back is too rounder 3. If your hips tilt forward and you have a belly pouch (even if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have one ounce of fat on your body) and your lower spine is arched significantly this means

Many people look at their mums and dad and assume they will look the same, My mum at 63 does not have many deep wrinkles, so instead of hoping for this trait, I went and got my DNA tested to see if science could give me any clues about how my skin would age. Remedial massage will be carried out as instructed by your surgeon Subject to your surgeons requests; The Post Liposculpture prodram is as follows:

• Massage will commence at 2 weeks post surgey and then at 8 weekly cycles • Once a week for 8 weeks (Gentle Deep Tissue/Lymphatic Drainage) • Once a fortnight for the next 8 weeks (Deep TIssue/Lymphatic Drainage) • Once a month for the next 8 weeks (Remedial)
