Premiership football, history, culture and some of the country’s best curry houses have established Leicester’s reputation as an exciting and friendly place to stay.

A city with two award-winning universities; the University of Leicester and De Montford University, this lively East Midlands destination is where you’ll also find the famous National Space Museum with its six interactive galleries and the UK’s largest planetarium. Known as Leicester’s original museum, the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery is home to a collection of work inspired by both the natural and cultural world, and is definitely worth a visit. For history lovers, the Old Town is a must. This area is home to the famous Leicester Cathedral and the

King Richard III Visitor Centre which tells the story of his life, death and recent discovery. The Guildhall is also worth seeing as it’s one of the best preserved timber framed halls in the country and dates back over 600 years. The former textile and shoe hub of St George’s Cultural Quarter is a haven for artists and creatives! The Curve is a particular stand-out attraction in this district too. Recognised as one of the country’s leading theatres, it provides a great setting for discovering new plays and dramas as well as large touring musical productions.

17

The historic village of Aylestone is a nature lover’s paradise with plenty of opportunities for walkers and cyclists to follow the scenic route along the Great Central Way. This path follows the former Great Central Railway and winds through the Aylestone Meadows. Just a stone’s throw from the city centre, visitors can admire Aylestone Hall and Gardens. The Hall is a Grade II listed building dating back to 1339 and it’s thought that King Charles I sheltered here for the siege of Leicester in 1645. St Andrew’s Church has over 800 years of history and is another attraction in the area.

When it comes to shopping, the city centre will not disappoint! St Martin’s Square combines a wealth of independent shops, restaurants and pubs, while Leicester Market dates back over 700 years with over 270 stalls, including the award-winning Food Hall. Haymarket and Highcross are two popular shopping centres in Leicester and are perfect for Christmas shopping. Christmas in Leicester will give everyone a magical feeling. Visitors can see over 16,000 illuminated lights and an incredible 52-foot Christmas tree, which is located at the Clock Tower. In addition, the annual Christmas ice rink will return to Jubilee Square and Santa’s Christmas grotto will make its way back to the New Market Square.

So, whether you’re heading to Leicester this side of Christmas or beyond, keep on reading to discover our round-up of hotels in and around the city centre. Today the pub retains many original characteristics including the warm and comforting open fires.

22

The Castle Hotel will impress guests who put good hearty food at the top of their priority list. The pub prides itself on classic cooked dishes made with care, from hand-battered cod with chips, gourmet burgers and the popular Brewer’s Chicken, as well as a traditional Sunday roast with a huge Yorkshire pudding.
