Where to go and where to stay

2020 marks the 125th anniversary of the National Trust. Founded on 12 January 1895 by Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Hardwicke Rawnsley, the trio of environmental pioneers pledged to preserve historical and natural places in the UK. Since that day, the charity has grown to a membership of 5.6 million supporters and it cares for over 500 places. It was back in the 1800s when the charity was given its first place of interest; five acres of cliff top at Dinas Oleu in Wales. This was followed by the purchase of Alfriston Clergy House in Sussex which was bought for £10, and then in 1899, the trust bought its first nature reserve. Located just outside of Cambridge, the two acre Wicken Fen is now a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest, as well as a National Nature Reserve, and a Nature Conservation Review site.

As a celebration of the trust’s commitment to buildings, in 1900 it was gifted Kanturk Castle in County Cork. This was the ninth property in the portfolio and remains the only one outside the UK.

Blakeney Point on the North Norfolk coast was acquired in 1912. This National Nature Reserve is now home to England’s largest grey seal colony which can be viewed on one of the locally operated ferry trips. 17

The Lake District is another area where the National Trust has a strong presence, thanks in part to the children’s author Beatrix Potter who left 4,000 acres of land and 15 farms to the care of the trust. Hill Top is always a popular place to visit and gives a glimpse inside the mind, as well as the home of Potter who swapped her London life and became a Lake District landowner and conservationist. In 1945 the National Trust celebrated its 50th anniversary with a portfolio of 93 historic buildings, 112,000 acres of land and a membership just shy of 8,000 people. Thirty years later, membership hit half a million and by 1990, an impressive two million people had signed-up and were enjoying free access to hundreds of memorable places. Today, the National Trust looks after seven of the UK’s World Heritage Sites, including Stonehenge, Giants Causeway, the Jurassic Coast and Hadrian’s Wall. It has 39 pubs and inns, and its historic houses and dramatic landscapes have featured in Harry Potter films through to small screen successes such as Downton Abbey, Wolf Hall, Poldark and Game of Thrones. Thanks to its supporters, during 2018/19, the trust received almost £97.8 million and for the 125th anniversary year of the National Trust, a special project to raise £125,000 has recently launched. Focussing on a collection of critical projects across the trust’s English Riviera properties, the charity is looking for a thousand fundraisers to raise £125 each by holding coffee mornings, quiz nights, bake sales and sponsored walks and runs.

One of the projects is the installation of garden seats which will be created by a local Devon carpenter and installed at Compton Castle. A larger project is the restoration of Agatha Christie’s summerhouse and flowerbeds at Greenway, reinstating the original route of the garden path and bringing the summerhouse back to its former simple design.

choice. Situated just over five miles from Greenway and close to Paignton Beach, the hotel boasts its own unique history having been the home of Washington Singer, one of the sons of Isaac Singer of sewing machine fame. The property was also requisitioned for the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War.

Greenway was Christie’s holiday home where the family and her friends enjoyed summer and Christmas holidays. Having been keen collectors, today’s visitors to the house can see some of the silver, botanical and china collections, in addition to the many books, all of which offer a peep into the author’s life. Fans of the who-done-it genre might even notice that the boathouse was the scene of a crime in Dead Man’s Folly too!

Eight miles from Paignton, in Kingswear, Coleton Fishacre is a National Trust property dating back to the 1920s when it was the elegant and glamorous setting for cocktail parties hosted by the famous D’Oyly Carte family. Acquired by the trust in 1982, the plans for Coleton Fishacre during the anniversary year include the creation of a paved garden path to make the main house and garden accessible to all. It might sound a simple project but because of the soil type, location and sourcing the necessary historical materials, it’s going to cost in the region of £50,000 to complete.

If you’re planning a visit to this National Trust hotspot, the Palace Hotel in Paignton is a good

19

The Place Hotel is an obvious choice of stay for Coleton Fishacre too but if you want to venture a little further afield, the Dartbridge Inn in Buckfastleigh is a picture postcard setting for a few days away. Dating back to the 19th century, public areas of the inn give a nod to the property’s past with oak beams and open fire places, while contemporary furniture brings modern day comfort and style to the restaurant and bar. The en-suite accommodation is tasteful and everyday starts with a freshly cooked to order breakfast!

Waterborough [CC BY-SA 3.0]

Our next National Trust stop is to Bradley, an unspoilt medieval manor house in the heart of Newton Abbot. Set among woodland and meadows, in the valley of the River Lemon, visitors can wander through rooms that have been untouched by time and enjoy the peaceful gardens.

Dartbridge Inn

If good views are an important part of your stay, the Passage House Hotel on the outskirts of Newton Abbot is ideal. It’s located on the banks of the River Teign Estuary and enjoys stunning views from many of the guest rooms, the restaurant and the sun terrace, which is a lovely location for afternoon tea. As well as the modern hotel, which has superb leisure facilities, there’s an 18th century country restaurant and bar.

Gwen and James Anderson Bradley Manor, National Trust property.

About five miles west of Torquay is the village of Compton where the trust’s Compton Castle stands among orchards and a small formal garden with the rolling hills of Devon as the backdrop. Dating back over 600 years, the Grade I listed building started out as a manor house which was then fortified in the 1500s in response to French raids on Plymouth.

20

Passage House Hotel

125 years of the National Trust A National Trust property since 1951, Compton Castle remains the home of the Gilbert Family but visitors can explore the property and soak up the romance and history of the building. Rooms open to the public include the medieval kitchen, Great Hall and Solar and Sub Solar. Built in 1450, the Solar (a large private living room) is reached via a climb up the 15th century staircase. Designed as a peaceful retreat from the noise of events in the Great Hall, a National Trust volunteer is on hand to explain additional points of interest and answer any questions visitors may pose.

Brian Abbott [Public domain]

Opening again in April 2020, the castle’s rose garden and medieval style knot garden add further appeal and interest to a visit.

Headland Hotel

Travelling from the countryside and Compton Castle to the seaside and all the delights of Torquay, the Headland Hotel provides a comfortable stay and a great location for discovering more of the National Trust’s portfolio. The 3-star hotel is on the beachfront and has a wellness area with a spa and sauna for guests’ relaxation. With evening entertainment, a shared lounge and a restaurant that specialises in British cuisine, including gluten free and vegan options, this is another of Devon’s popular hotel destinations.

Headland Hotel

We’ve highlighted just four of the National Trust’s historic buildings. There are another 296 houses and buildings across the UK which are all worthy of a visit, especially in this celebratory 125th anniversary year! If you need help planning your accommodation, you can trust our team and free service to match your National Trust visits with an enjoyable couple of nights away! 21
