Are you a gawping ghost watcher? Do you like to take a gamble on a ghoulish sighting? Do you love to hang out in a haunted hotel for Halloween? We’ve gathered a cast iron cauldron of ghostly places and haunted happenings where an unexplained bump in the night or a sudden icy chill could be your clue for an early hotel check-out!

Tutbury

Castle

13

Dating back to the 1800s, the spirits of the Peak District are alive and kicking at the Innkeepers Lodge Castleton! Local legend declares there are four ghosts who haunt the grounds and room number four could be the scene of stranger things too! Situated in the haunting and dramatic landscape of the Peak District and surrounded by the hills of Hope Valley, this bed and breakfast inn is a

14

good base for exploration and discovery as well as providing a comfortable stay. All creature comforts are included, from Freeview TV, free WiFi and parking plus a continental breakfast. Fine wines, cask ales, ciders and of course, spirits are available from the friendly bar. Guests can enjoy a freshly prepared menu with dishes which are perfect for a business meeting, a family get together or a romantic meal for two.

Haunted Happenings If you have a feeling you’re being watched when you stay at the Bell Hotel in Thetford don’t be surprised! The ghosts of a former landlady and a hooded monk have been known to show their presence. Add in the smell of a mystery perfume and your stay at this 16th century inn is certainly going to awaken the senses! The hotel offers 45 cosy en-suite guest rooms with vintage features including original Tudor wall paintings. Free WiFi will keep you connected to the

outside world and for dining, there’s a delicious seasonal menu to be sampled in the separate bar, restaurant or lounge area. The Bell Hotel is a good base for exploring the beautiful county of Norfolk where there are myths and tales to excite lovers of legends and ghost gathers. Ann Boleyn, phantom horse-drawn carriages, skeletons, dragons and big beasts are lurking in church grave yards, along ancient walkways and across the county ley lines!

15

Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire has featured on the TV programme Most Haunted and this Halloween it’s the scene of Portal Paranormal; a night dedicated to ghost hunting using all the latest hi-tech equipment in the hands of a professional paranormal investigation team. The castle is best known as one of the prisons of Mary Queen of Scots and there are reports of hundreds of sightings about different ghostly going-ons so if you dare to stay for the event, which runs until 12.30am, be prepared to be spooked!

16

Just a short six minute walk from the castle is the picturesque Dog and Partridge Hotel located on the town’s High Street. The former coaching inn has lots of period charm and feature beams, exposed stone walls and open fire places. Food is taken seriously here with the team taking great pride in the seasonal menu of pub classics and new dishes. Game, fish and seafood will tempt the taste buds and you may even time your stay here to coincide with one of the hotel’s themed food and drink festivals.

Haunted Happenings Woodchester

Mansion

Headless horseman, infant spirits, a drummer boy and chanting monks are a few of the spooky characters who make their presence felt in the county of Gloucestershire. The region is well-known for the stunning Cotswolds, where picturesque villages, towns and stately houses attract millions of visitors every year. In the centre of Gloucestershire is the market town of Stroud. With cafés, galleries and gift shops plus a popular farmers market, it’s a great base for exploring the beauty of the region and if you’re lucky, you may witness a few of the county’s not so pretty ghostly residents too.

Woodchester Mansion is a good place to start. The Victorian Gothic house was never finished; ceilings and floors are missing, windows absent and some of the walls have never been plastered. There is however plenty to see, including stunning stone carvings and two breeding colonies of bats. And it’s when the sun goes down and the bats start to stir, that the house opens its doors to ghostly gatherings! Don’t be alarmed by the sounds of a steam train passing through the house. American servicemen, a Roman soldier, a phantom coach and a headless horse could also give you something to talk about! Photo by ricardo

17

If you prefer a more organised approach to ghosts, the Creeps, Crimes and Curious Tales walking tour in Cheltenham unearths some stories of paranormal activity from behind the regency facades that the Gloucestershire city is so famous for. In a two hour tour, learn about the original woman in black, a murdering butler and some of the characters who haunt the school.

18

To help you sleep at night, we suggest a stay at the Greenway Hotel and Spa on the outskirts of the city. The property dates back to the 16th century and with no reports of hauntings, guests are assured of a friendly welcome and comfortable stay!

From the coast to the countryside, from the suburbs to the city; pubs with accommodation are not just for hikers who like to huddle over a pint, a packet of Pipers crisps and a picture postcard view! Pubs with accommodation are an excellent choice for the business traveller too. Nowadays, a warm welcome is pretty much guaranteed wherever you stay but choose a pub and you choose a relaxed stay where guest rooms charm as much as the hosts, where character is part of the service as well as the fixtures, and local knowledge is freely shared. Choose a pub for your next business stay and you can be assured of a breakfast to fuel your day and an evening meal that goes beyond a traditional cheese and pickle ploughman’s; enjoy seasonal menus that gastro-pubs would be proud to produce.

25

The beer garden at Gosforth Hall Inn in Cumbria is becoming a firm favourite for fair weather days filled with al fresco dining opportunities. Equally appealing is the inn’s bar and lounge for relaxed dining or on those chillier evenings, enjoy eating in the restaurant. Homemade pies, winter stews and game casseroles will gladden the heart of a weary traveller in winter while curries and paellas please in the warmer months. Of course, fans of fajitas, fish and chips and burgers and baps won’t be disappointed either and the apple pie and custard is definitely not to be missed!

26

The Inn Crowd Located in the Lake District National Park, Gosforth Hall Inn is very popular with visitors to the area, which isn’t surprising given the attention to decor and detail in the guest rooms. Situated in the Grade II listed building are four en-suite rooms that feature original sandstone walls, beams and fireplaces. With under floor heating through the bedrooms and walk-in wet rooms, beautiful oak furniture, king size beds and 32” flat screen TV, guests are assured of a most comfortable stay. Built much more recently, The Annex beautifully complements the 350 year old inn and is sympathetically designed with a local slate roof and sandstone structure, following a courtyard layout. Rooms here are as inviting and charming as the rooms in the inn with some providing unspoilt views of the countryside. There are also two and three bed apartments on-site which include great living spaces. Free parking and WiFi are included and the hosts promise a delightful stay for business travellers and leisure guests alike.

Voted a top ten autumn and winter golf course by ‘Today’s Golfer’ magazine, Ufford Park in Woodbridge, in the heart of Suffolk, is a par 71 championship parkland course for intermediate and experienced players although golfers of all abilities will certainly enjoy the tees, fairways and greens. The course is home to prestigious events such as the PGA Europro Tour and the Best Western Senior Masters. There’s a good selection of short and longer holes which circle a five acre conservation area. Experienced golfers will enjoy the risks of the 12 holes where water comes into play and for the big hitters the 13th at 294 yards sets a challenge.

34

Further facilities include a two tier, flood lit undercover driving range and although there’s not a pro shop on-site, the 4,000 square foot American Golf shop provides everything a golfer could wish for. Ufford Park is an excellent choice for golfers who want longer breaks too. In addition to the one day/one night golf play and stay packages, five and seven day memberships can be purchased and for the rusty or improving player, the residential tuition breaks include expert advice from the on-site DoctorGolf Academy.

Tee Time!

Along with complimentary access to the health club and swimming pool too, golfers can enjoy delicious dining in the hotel’s Park Restaurant. The seasonal menus really benefit from local produce such as freshly caught fish, dairy products, fruit and vegetables from Suffolk farmers and artisan butchers supplying the best beef, lamb, chicken, pork and game.

In the City: Birmingham It’s easy to take in the many historical sites around Birmingham. The city has an abundance of landmark buildings that date back to the Industrial Revolution in addition to newer award-winning properties that are recognised across the globe. A good place to start a journey back in time is at the city’s Town Hall. Built in 1822 and with Victorian architecture resembling a Roman temple, the venue played host to the first performance of Mendelssohn’s Elijah in 1847. Today it continues to be the centre of the city’s music scene.

A visit to the Grade II listed building that’s home to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery will open the door to artwork from the 17th and 19th centuries. Exhibits include local and industrial history along with fine art, ceramics, jewellery and archaeology that form a collection of world importance. The Library of Birmingham holds internationally important collections too and also provides free access to the National Film Archive. State-of-the-art gallery space, an outdoor amphitheatre and two garden terraces make the Library of Birmingham a popular attraction with over two million visitors a year and for literature lovers, at the top of the ten floor building, is a rotunda that’s dedicated to Shakespeare.

Birmingham is a hotspot for food fanatics too; Michelin-starred restaurants, independent dining, street food, the world-famous Balti Triangle and regular farmers’ markets add to the diverse and rich range of delicious dishes and dining options available. There are plenty of canal-side restaurants too and for something a little extra special, the 360 degree panoramic views of Birmingham from the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill will certainly impress.
