From the Editor’s Desk

Editor-in-chief: Talal Budebs Managing Director: Charl Chaka Editor: Andy Buchan

Dubai is a great city, but one of its faults is it lives life in the fast lane (no doubt with some moron sitting on your rear bumper, flashing his lights like he’s operating a club’s strobe). Which is why after cramming thousands of events into the last 11 months, we’re looking forward to Ramadan and a much needed month off. That said, the Infusion team are dispersing to Ibiza, America and the Maldives, so there might not be much re-charging going on! Until then, we have the low-down on the next 2 weeks of big events and club closings before Ramadan, which is scheduled to fall around July 19 and last for 30 days. Looking Back

What we did

Evanescence @ World Trade Centre

Who said summer in Dubai is dull? The people watching alone at the Evanescence gig was Olympic quality: women in skirts short enough to get the Twitter dress code frothers worked up, glammed-up goths, grand-parents and the normal coterie of heavy metallers enjoyed an impressive night of rock and roll. Local band EYE impressed with their heavy take on prog-rock on warm up (abetted by some intrinsic visuals), before Evanescence — helmed by rock and roll maiden Amy Lee m S came on stage for an hour and half of rock and roll theatrics. Highlights came thick and fast, but encore closer ‘My Immortal’ had the 4,000 strong crowd singing along to every word, the perfect closer to a high-energy pop-rock show.

Get Wet @ Nasimi Pool

What could possibly go wrong at a pool and foam party - all day sunshine, night-time beats courtesy of some of Dubai’s finest and 1,500 clubbers all giving it large? Well, you could have a freak gust of wind blow a ball of foam onto the stage sending a CDJ into meltdown and ensuring Nasimi resident Smokingroove had to play the rest of his set off one deck. Thankfully that was it for foam-related surprises, with Mr Mr stealing the show with a big set of trademark audio tonic beats and pieces. Oh, and special mention must go to the look-at-me clubber who tried to play keepy-up with one of the beachballs while staring at several ladies, only to fall flat on his face mid-juggle. More messy than Messi.

Golden Foot Mega Tent

Football is increasingly big business in the UAE, and the European Championships has been one of the biggest and best yet, with the quality of football (and lack of vuvuzelas) far outstripping the last World Cup. And the viewing options have also improved tenfold, with the Golden Foot Mega Tent near Barasti proving to be a popular choice. Operating over two levels, and with a 2,000 capacity, it’s one of the biggest arenas on offer, and comes with 3 eyemeltingly big screens and a host of smaller TVs dotted in amongst the numerous sofas. The vibe during the big matches was as good as anywhere in the city, and as an added extra they had a full on light display which went into over-drive whenever a red or yellow card was issued.

Fancy booking big American electro DJ Steve Aoki? Then you’ll need to provide this (and loads more) for his rider: Inflatable boat or dingy for 2-3 people 6 pairs of men’s underwear 1 bottle Listerine 2 medium sized cakes that read DIM MAK, soft icing, soft cake, nothing dense (DIM MAK is the name of his record label) 1 Director’s Chair 1 1/8th of local grass (ahem) Can’t see him being booked in Dubai any time soon, then… In Numbers $65 million — the net worth of Tiesto, according to celebritynetworth. com. Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyk, John Digweed and Armin Van Buuren make up the rest of the Top 5.

Looking Forward

Local News

No.1 Fridays line up It's been one of the success stories of the clubbing season as No.1 Fridays made the seamless move from Sensation to N'Dulge, and have promptly been packing out the Atlantis club week-in, week-out. They're closing their summer with a bang as Chris Brown's official DJ Babeydrew plays on Friday July 6 (coincidentally while Chris Brown's 'other official' DJ plays at Trilogy the same night) for the Fortune album launch. Friday July 13 meanwhile sees the long-running brand welcome back Heartless Crew (above) for a DJ and MC show. Ladies get free entry before midnight, and Dhs100 for men all night.

MUSIC THAT MATTERS

Send tracks/edits/ remixes to andy@ infusion.ae

Most Wanted Ninja Party Mix Explosive, but very commercial, hour-long party mix from N'Dulge resident Soulninja. DJ Aks - Nonstop House Mix As it says on the tin, non-stop, commercial house from the Velvet Underground man. Sansa/Nasrawi/Mehdi Dub Doubt Very promising, deep house release from One28 Records, with the Rampa take our favourite. Perfect Storm ADHD (Remix) Dark, Odd Future style hip hop re-take by The Recipe's Perfect Storm. Raxon - What Just Happened Brooding, basslinefriendly deep house from the audio tonic man. Socio Robots/Markii/ Hoolz - Stay A While Deep house work-inprogress slammer from the 3 Dubai producers. Darko De Jan Dubai 2 Brazil More tech-house goodness from the prolific Dubai producer.

Battle of the beats

What do you do when a newcomer snaps at your ankles, itching for a fight? Well, if you're long-running DnB night Globalfunk, you invite said challengers audiOasis for a head-to-head battle for a full on feast of beats. It all takes place at Catwalk on Friday July 6, and marks the end of the season for both nights, with the monthly audiOasis nights having created a hot fuss in recent months for their party-starting mix of DnB and dubstep. The tunes come courtesy of Mach 4, Mr Gremlin and Somalie, while MCs Olly Wood and Prit are on hosting duties.

Al Murray calls time

Al Murray, the UK comedian, is back in Dubai after his sold-out shows last year. His stand up routine, in which he acts as a stereotypical rightwing pub landlord, has won him several plaudits: he was twice voted in the Top 50 stand ups of all time, while he won the prestigious Perrier award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He'll be performing at the Madinat Theatre on September 11 and 12, with tickets Dhs250.

Nasimi pool parties return, again We all thought it was a one-off, but when thousands turned up to the last pool party at Nasimi last week, it seemed people power forced their hand as 2 more foam and pool party sessions have been confirmed. Friday July 6th's line up includes Radio 2's Schooly, MustHaveSoul's Simon Reid and Philip Jo, while the closing party on July 13 features the sounds of Dan Chadwick, Patrick Carrera, while Raxon and Afroboogie close it out with a deep house and tribal tech-house session. 1pm-1am, Dhs100 entry for all from 3pm.

Looking Forward Ramadan

Ramadan is due to start on Friday July 20 and continue for 30 days until Saturday August 18 (although these dates can change due to the official sighting of the moon). During that time, all clubs will be shut, and loud and live music isn't allowed, while pubs and bars will only serve alcohol from 7pm, meaning Friday brunches are on hold for the month. Infusion will return after Ramadan, with our next issue out on Sunday August 18.

Kudos to the Electric Daisy Carnival promoters, after they temporarily paused their programming in Las Vegas as high winds and dust storms threatened the safety of the crowd. Big ups, erm ourselves! Our Youtube channel has just hit 80,000 views making it nearly as watched as Paris Hilton's disastrous attempt at DJing.

The DJ Magazine poll is back for another year. That sound you can't hear in the background is the Infusion office giving a sh*t. Justin Beiber has released his own perfume range. We didn't know that smelling good was imperative for someone who's balls haven't dropped, but apparently 'Someday' is available for Beliebers everywhere now.

Hip hop

hooray

Summer's in Dubai might be the rough side to year-round sunshine, but at least they come with the guarantee of the Hop Fest, the 3 day festival dedicated to good times. We spoke to A&E's Beer Brand Ambassador Jasper for his must-sup beers(also, Beer Brand Ambassador must = best job in the world), scoured the net for some mustknow beer facts and quotes and a step-by-step guide to drinking it (it's not as easy as it looks, apparently). Cheers!

Erdinger Dunkel

Dunkel Weißbier Erding, Germany 5.6% ABV Dunkel literally translates as “dark”. Erdinger Dunkel has an indulgent aroma of cocoa, roasted coffee and banana. An experience reminiscent of drinking an espresso in a Bavarian Chocolate Haus.

Marston’s Pedigree English Pale Ale Burton-Upon-Trent, UK 4.5% ABV New to Dubai, Pedigree is a classic English Pale Ale that embodies the traditional

flavours of nut, fruit and wine notes that can only be achieved by a true BurtonUpon-Trent, Oak Matured, British Ale.

Somersby Danish Cider Copenhagen, Denmark 4.7% ABV If you have a bit of a sweet tooth, and fancy a break from the hops, Somersby is your answer. This Danish cider only started in 2008 and has taken Scandinavia by storm. Completely natural with aromas of candied apple… very easy drinking.

Delirium Tremens

Belgian Golden Ale Melle, Belgium 8.5% ABV In 2008 at the World Beer Championships in Chicago, USA, Delirium Tremens was voted “The Best Beer in the World”. Complex aromas of yeast, cloves, citrus and green apple make this a well-balanced beer to be savoured.

Früli

Strawberry Witbier Melle, Belgium 4.1% ABV “A smoothie with bite”, Fruli has a serious Strawberry sweetness that balances the zesty wheat beer base for a delicious experience. 2009 saw Früli voted as the “World’ Best Fruit Beer” at the World Beer Awards.

Modelo Especial Mexican Pale Lager Mexico City, Mexico 4.5% ABV Originating in 1925, Modelo is the big brother of Corona. A light bodied, full flavoured Mexican lager with a subtle hoppy, dry finish. An easy drinker for the sweltering Dubai summer. Pilsner Urquell Czech Pilsner Pilsen, Czech Republic 4.4% ABV Pilsner Urquell literally means, “The Pilsner from the original

source”. This traditional, full flavoured pilsner was created in 1842. That makes Pilsner Urquell the world’s first Lager! Light sweet malt followed by a deep hoppy dry finish makes this the quintessential Pilsner.

Beer facts Beer quotes How to drink it How to lose your beer belly The ancient Sumarians were the first to brew beer, and took it so seriously that if you brewed a bad batch, your punishment was to be drowned in it. You can’t be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at

very least you need a beer. Frank Zappa. Light makes beer go off, which is why many beers are stored in brown or dark green glass to help protect them. Beer should be stored in a fridge, but at 45-55 degrees, which is warmer than most fridges. Lower temperatures may add to the refreshment value, but will also numb your tongue to the tastes and aromas. Water is a key component in beer, and certain types of water are better for certain beers — Dublin’s mineral-rich, hard water is perfectly suited to making stouts like Guinness. Half a pint of an average beer actually has fewer calories than 2 percent milk But then again, you don’t generally sink 10 of them in a session. So those calories can take some shifting, especially if they come with a late night takeaway on top. America’s prohibition lasted 13 years, 10 months, 19 days, 17 hours and 32 minutes. If you're drinking at home, chill your beer glass in a fridge (but not one with open food containers). The glass should be thick walled, and ideally not plastic as they can transfer flavours from previous contents. In 1814, a brewery tank ruptured, causing a tidal wave of beer to course through a London parish, destroying 2 houses and killing 9 people.

Head is important on a beer, so pour from a height into the glass, with a steady, slow stream to minimize disruption. Beer is aromatic (or at least good beers are), so take a good sniff before you drink it all in. The beer market in America is worth an estimated $110 billion, with over 205 million barrels of beer sold. The short answer is there’s no quick fix to your beer belly. Cardiovascular exercise is the best way to shift excess weight, with high intensity interval training (2 min sprint, 10 minute jog) one successful method, along with . Oh, by the way, we lied - there is a quick fix. Don’t drink beer. Good job Ramadan is just round the corner… The oldest trademark in the world is the Bass beer logo from 1876. All right, brain. I don’t like you, you don’t like me. So let’s just do this and I’ll get back to killing you with beer. Homer Simpson. Your body can break down about one drink an hour. BigFun

The original house music sound has never been bigger, but some of the originators are back in business, including Detroit trio Inner City responsible for classic hits 'Big Fun' and 'Good Life'. We spoke to Kevin and Anne Saunderson about their comeback and their legacy.

Why did you choose now as the time to make a return? Kevin: We miss and love our music. Our kids had grown older, and it felt like the right time — we did a tour in 2010 that we really enjoyed and made us realize how much we were missing it. We still have stuff that’s not been complete. How does the live show work, how spontaneous can you be? Anne: We have worked together for so long now, that we know the songs inside and out, so it’s easy to be spontaneous if necessary. Kevin: The live show is different in different areas. Sometimes we have a full band with keyboards, percussion, the girls singing and myself controlling the flow and vibes. As it’s all live, I can change up very easily. What legacy do you think you have? Anne: That fact that people are

covering Inner City songs or

that we hear songs that sounds similar to Inner City tells us that we are still big influences on the dance music scene. Kevin: We’ve had success from the underground to the commercial, and we’re still doing it 26, 27 years later. What’s your take on the current house music scene, is it where you thought it would be when you helped start things? Anne: It’s taken a long time for the USA to embrace dance music, much longer than we thought it would take. The commercial side of house music is certainly doing well. There are more RnB artists like Usher and Nicky Minaj right now making house music than RnB! But there are different dimensions to house music and it would be nice if radio would embrace the non-commercial as well as commercial. America is going through a real renaissance in terms of dance music — how

connected do you feel to that? Anne: Very! To hear songs with similarities to what we were doing 20 years ago, is really quite amazing. To see people singing along with the songs at the shows is incredible, especially as some of them should be in bed at that time as they’re so young! Kevin: It’s finally caught up, but it’s very commercial, very cheesy. People believe they can make money from it now. The young generation are into electronic music, it has become a popular format for many pop and RnB artists. I think it will help the underground side of things too, which gives it longer life and continuation which can only be good. ‘Big Fun’ and ‘Good Life’ have stood the test of time and are still club classics — what makes them last so well? Anne: Lyrically and musically these tracks are timeless and memorable. They remind people of a time when music was made for the love and from the heart, they associate a part of their life with hearing these tracks for the first time, at a club, in a car on the radio, playing in the background at their wedding etc. Most of all these songs bring back happy memories. Kevin: They’re very hooky, both musically and vocally, and they have a very different sound. They’re very uplifting. At the end of the day, everyone wants to have their soul lifted. Taboo Ramadan closing party feat. Inner City Live, Thursday July 12, 10pm-3am, Dhs150.

Musical medicine If it's something a little bit different you're after, Catwalk is a good start. With DnB, dubstep and indie already on rotation, they also have Bad Medicine, a house night dedicated to all things big and bassline. We spoke to promoter Lisa Chauhan and resident Marky B to find out more about this niche night

Lisa

How and when did Bad Medicine start? The music scene over here gets static and a bit too much of the same-same sometimes and I was missing the bassline, cooler sounds you hear in Leeds and Manchester. A friend and I got together and thought we should do a night with this type of music, and Bad Medicine was born. It’s a unique night in Dubai, in that it caters to the bassline, tougher electro sounds — how’s the response been so far? Our first ever gig was fantastic and it’s been great ever since. Everyone who comes

down to the night really enjoy themselves, there’s a great atmosphere and the music is what sets us apart. As a promoter, what do you find works best in this region? Well obviously Facebook and Twitter is used massively in this region and it’s a great way to make people aware of what’s happening and new nights. Using photos and videos, promo footage of the night etc really works well because visually people want to see how busy the night

is, the caliber of the crowd. I love Twitter, in fact I think I am a Twitter junkie, I get cold sweats if I haven’t been on it every hour! Blackberry broadcasts are also quite effective if you are promoting in the right circles, however it can be annoying for some. You’ve made a new home at Catwalk, how are you settling in so far? Catwalk is a really great venue. The capacity is about 250, it’s cool and intimate and a nice underground spot for music that isn’t really mainstream. It’s home to a few different, alternative nights. Any what’s in the pipeline? Thursday July 12 is our closing party. We're sticking with the star, DJ Marky B. We love the way he plays to the crowd and drops certain tracks that make you want to dance (or skank, which is what I do!)

Marky B

Is this your favourite style of music to DJ? I love playing all types of house music and I am a very versatile DJ, but if I had to pick one I would say this. It’s the style I played in the UK for years before moving to Dubai. I lived in Leeds and used to play at Fibre, Glasshouse, Mission and Gatecrasher to name a few and know the

scene really well. Dubai is missing that, so it’s great to play what’s close to home. And what sort of reactions do you get at the night (good and bad)? All good. This style of music is all about crowd participation, there are some huge drops, upliftings vocals and a lot of big remixes so the crowd love it! What’s a big track working in your set at the moment? Mark Longbottoms remix of ‘Somebody I Used To Know’. It’s a current track that everybody knows, but with the heavier bassline and beats, it gets the crowd everytime! And if you like the night, any other nights/DJs you’d recommend checking out? Mark Pickup, Matthew Charles and Da Sendri: all great house DJs and each have a real passion for music! Also DJ Masterstepz, he’s’ known for his UK garage and urban sounds, but he plays at N’Dulge every Friday and really knows how to get the crowd hyped! Bad Medicine, Thursday July 12, Catwalk, 10pm-3am, Dhs50 with one drink after 1am, free before.

Music News... End of the road

Depending on which side of the musical fence you sit on, this is either a tragedy or the best piece of news you’ve heard all year as the Swedish House Mafia, the high-octane trio comprised of Axwell, Ingrosso and Steve Angello have announced they’re splitting up. But not before they play several stadiums around the world, including the Milton Keynes Bowl on July 14, their residency at Ushuaia and a farewell show at the Friends Arena in Sweden at the end of November. In a statement on their site, they said ‘We came, we raved, we loved.’ Doubters would also add ‘we played pre-recorded CDs’ into that, but there’s no denying the hitMUSIC BITES making power of the trio, who will all continue to record and perform under their own names. We can only enter after her sterilisation team has left the room. There will not be any of Madonna’s DNA, any hair, or anything.

Portuguese promoter Alvaro Ramos confirms that a team of 9 clean her dressing room, removing every strand of DNA they can.

Guetta pushes Deadmaus’ buttons

Never far from a DJ battle or tirade, Deadmaus has slammed David Guetta and ex-label mate Skrillex in a recent interview in Rolling Stone. Deadmau5 said Guetta has ‘two iPods and a mixer and he just plays tracks,’ while he claimed Skrillex ‘wasn’t doing anything got technical, he’s just playing his sh*t’.’ Aware that he might be under scrutiny himself, Deadmau5 countered by saying ‘Not to say I’m not a button pusher, I just push a lot more buttons.’

Final Pendulum swing?

Rob Swire, Pendulum’s lead singer, seems to have called time on the DnB outfit’s time by stating ‘There will be no further Pendulum live shows. There are no current plans for a new album in 2013.’ His off-shoot creation, Knife Party, have been getting increasing amounts of air play, with Swire describing it as ‘too much fun.’ It looks as though the Pendulum name will still exist in some form, with El Hornet and Mc Verse continuing to book DJ sets under the name.

Lauryn Hill Fights the Power

Fugees singer Lauryn Hill published a powerful critique of the music business and consumer society this week in response to US tax authorities charging her with failing to file tax returns between 2005 and 2007. Releasing her statement via her Tumblr, mslaurynhill.tumblr. com, the massively successful former pop star described sacrificing her personal needs to make millions for corporations and individuals who turned on her as she sought escape. “I’ve seen people promote addiction, use sabotage, black listing, media bullying and any other coercion technique they could, to prevent artists from knowing their true value, or exercising their full power,” she said. “Addressing critical issues like pop culture cannibalism or its manipulation of the young at the expense of everything, was frowned upon and discouraged by limiting funding, or denying it outright,” she continued. “I kept my life relatively simple, even after huge successes, but it became increasingly obvious that certain indulgences and privileges were expected to come at the expense of my free soul, free mind, and therefore my health and integrity. So I left a more mainstream and public life, in order to wean both myself, and my family, away from a lifestyle that required distortion and compromise as a means for maintaining it,” she explained.

From With Love A big name DJ in Dubai, Matt Charles made the bold decision to return to Ibiza for the summer in search of, if not fame and fortune, some impressive DJ bookings at the island's more illustrious clubs. Here's how his summer has gone so far… They say if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere, the same must be true of Ibiza. When you exit Ibiza Airport, the first thing you’re hit with is famous DJs staring back at you from billboards that anywhere else in the world would have brands like Coca Cola staring back at you. For 4 months of the year, this island is the dance music capital, or EDM as America has termed it. For that very reason, every starry-eyed kid with a USB stick full of tunes flocks to this island to try and break through the ranks and one day appear on one of those hallowed billboards. This makes for some stiff competition on the island and provides clubs, bars and promoters with plenty of options when it comes to putting

their line ups together. But what should a talent booker be looking for in a DJ? For the last few weeks the requisite skill set of a competent DJ has been a hot topic on social media platforms, including Twitter. In one camp we have the Swedish House Mafia with their pre-recorded sets, pyrotechnics and radio friendly formulaic “Electronic Dance Music” and in the other corner we have the champion of the bumpity bump, underground house, a man known for paying his dues, the original House Gangsta, DJ Sneak. However these DJs all have one thing in common: it is extremely unlikely any of them have warmed up a club or played a day time set at a beach bar in the not too distant past.

To cut it on this island and actually make a living, an “Ibiza DJ” needs to be flexible and have an extensive and varied music collection (that you know how to put together well). Breaking into the big line ups or major clubs without the backing of a Beatport Top Ten bothering production is extremely difficult, so the other route is paying your dues, making your contacts and climbing that ladder slowly. And since getting here in May, that’s exactly what I’ve been doing, Sneak would be proud! The International Music Summit at the start of the season is a great opportunity for networking as everybody is in one place for 3 days. It was here that I caught up with old friends and bagged myself a set on Pacha’s Roof terrace for the Defected In The House Opening party. With Bob Sinclar, Shapeshifters, Simon Dunmore and Shovel downstairs doing their thing, I kept the terrace bumping along to some classic house with

some funk and disco thrown in for good measure. Next up was a change of scenery down at Sands Beach bar in Playa Den Bossa. The 3 deck wizard himself, Carl Cox, bought into this beach bar last year, so big things are expected this season: the setting is amazing so I’m looking forward to being back there over the summer. All work and no play makes Matt a dull boy though, so I have managed to get out and check out some of my favourite clubs. Space Opening was gargantuan as always with Carl Cox taking the Flight Arena 2 and half hours beyond its closing time. DC 10 is its usual crazy self, although I was digging the main room more than the terrace this year, you can probably attribute that to my age and the more available real estate. Next up was the We Love opening, with its usual mini-festival like line up. But the highlight for me was Derrick May, a DJ who truly deserves to be on a billboard.

DJ Booth: Da Sendri

One of the longest-serving DJs in town — and with current residencies at Sandance, Nasimi and M-Dek, one of the best — we find out what makes Darren ‘Da Sendri’ Hendry tick…

One thing you might not know about me is... I used to do ballet to help my balance (I wanted to be a footballer). My worst ever job was... I’ve had so many but the worst was door-to-door sales in Sheffield. I lasted about 1 week, it was terrible. My favourite ever record is... Louis Armstrong, ‘Wonderful World’. DJing is much like... Getting paid for your hobby, there is no better feeling when you are playing a great gig and the crowd are really into your set, it makes life worth living. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Inconsistent: sometimes you play for one of the best most up for it crowds ever, the next week you have idiots constantly telling you what to play. Do we come to your work place and tell you how to do your job? I’m really proud of... Hmm not really proud of anything yet. I have acheived quite a lot so far but only a fraction of what I want to achieve. Ask me next year and see if I’ve done something extra that I’m proud of. If I could change one thing about anything it would be... Governments and banks, I’d get rid of them all. I can’t live without... The Internet, boring I know but I spend half my day on it, for work, for information and socially.. Oh dear I really am sad My biggest DJ achievement to date is... Still being booked for the best gigs and venues 7 years since giving it all up to become a DJ. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... The late 80s and early 90s. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... Carl Cox. The guy is a genius and if I couldn’t learn from him then I might as well give up! I’m not a politician but... It’s not hard to see the world is seriously messed up these days.

Album Reviews... Stained Music - This Is House Volume 1



It’s a bold statement, calling your latest compilation ‘This Is House.’ We’re sure that the 80s masters would have something to say about it, never mind the fact that by definition it’s trying to unify the house sound (which in today’s genre-split, fractured scene is virtually impossible). But while you could argue with the bold moniker, the album’s roots are in the right place as label owner Greg Stainer reworks Cheryl Lynn’s disco classic ‘To Be Real’ into a filtered, tech house monster which will clearly do damage on more commercial dancefloors. The UAE born and bred label has a host of local talent on display, including Armani’s Darko De Jan and the Lebanese/ English duo of Rayner & Wisqo, and they have one of the album’s highlights in the form of bouncy, Euro-house track ‘Smoke The Pancake,’ all face-melting pads and percussive stabs. The tracks are all fairly linear — deep house, electro and hints of trance are to the fore — but as a dancefloorcentric package, this is highly effective thanks to big builds, rock-solid drops and sublime production. This is Greg Stainer’s interpretation of house, which is fine with us.

Fun - Some Nights



Production. It might be a vague-ish word used to describe the sound and quality of a song/album, but it’s at the forefront of Fun’s second album. On lead single ‘We Are Young’ it adds to the songwriting skills of Nate Reuss, transforming it from a cute little ditty into a bombastic, stadium-sweeping pop song that’s swept all before it, including claiming the Billboard Top spot. And then there are tracks like ‘All Alone,’ a bouncy hip hop number abetted by some military drums and brass flourishes which grow thanks to the pop injection. But on ‘It Gets Better’ for example, the incessant auto-tune and pop gloss that covers every guitar riff and drum break turn it from what could have been a promising punk tune into a neutered, pop-lite confection. ‘All Alright’ meanwhile sounds like the male version of a Leona Lewis song, and that’s never a compliment thanks to the onion-like layers of production wizardry that drown her ‘songs’. The end result is mixed: it’ll do very, very nicely in the charts, but for those looking for a bit more substance, you’re left teased and tantalised by the opportunities, which really isn’t much fun at all. Will.I.Am burned

In today’s busy age, we all have to multi-task. But rapper will.i.am took this one step further recently when he decided to not only carry the Olympic torch as part of its journey to London, but also Tweet his live experience. ‘It was hard for me not to tweet about it... When they created the Olympics there wasn’t Twitter. The torch is a light and all I was doing was sending the light across the planet.”

GOSS BITE It’s really awesome. 68 year old school bus monitor Karen Klein responds after Dhs1 million was raised in her name after a 10-minute long video in which she’s ruthlessly bullied by 13 year old school kids surfaced on Youtube.

Taxing times

While tax might be little more than a novel concept in Dubai, it’s big news elsewhere in the world, something comedian Jimmy Carr found out to his cost last week. He sheltered millions in a perfectly legal, but morally dubious offshore investment, and was rumbled by Times’ journalists. He has since apologised about the revelation, taking to Twitter to write ‘I now realise I’ve made a terrible error of judgement.’ As did the heckler at his recent gig, who cried out ‘You’re a tax cheat.’ When Carr questioned what he did for a living, he replied ‘I’m a tax inspector’ to which Carr won the day by responding ‘Well you’re doing a fairly s**t job of it, aren’t you?”

Weird News... Extra time

The football might have been big businesses for bars and pubs, but it’s created an unlikely sideaffect - namely football widows are taking to dating sites looking for sex during Euro 2012. Illicitencounters.com has experienced a 77% spike in traffic, which it attributes to neglected football widows looking for some on-the-side action. Spokeswoman Rosie Freeman-Jones said: “People’s interest in football is obviously on the rise, but WEIRD BITES so is the number of women who feel put out by their husband’s obsession It is very dangerous and it can do you real with the game.’ damage - I don’t want others to make the same mistake I made. UK resident Katie Wilson, 19, was fined Dhs1200 for walking through her local Tesco supermarket naked in the afternoon (and karate kicking a cop) after she took too much of new legal party drug Benzo.

Purrfect Cats have an array of talents - mostly chasing balls of string - but one toy shop in Southampton has employed the world’s first security cat. Millie the Bengal cat has been hired to help guard some of the UK’s best selling toy ranges, with her climbing and loud purring skills making her the prime candidate. As expected, Millie will be paid in cat food and fish for her vital work, while her owner added: “Millie has always had a very vigilant personality and doesn’t mind long hours alone.”

ASK

2000 He’s one of the most in-demand DJs on the circuit, so who better to turn to for advice. Starting from this issue, we’ll put your pressing concerns and questions to DJ Habibi 2000, so we can all bask in his infinite wisdom… I’m a passionate music fan, I live and breathe good music, and have all of Justin Beiber’s releases. But how do I make myself stand out from all the other pop DJs in town? First of all, let me tell you what pop means - it means popular. Surprising, isn’t it? I’m not a pop DJ, but I am a popular DJ which is just another reason why I’m seen as an enigma in the industry. But when I’m mixing Rihanna into David Guetta, I like to add in as many effects and samples as possible so that people know it’s DJ Habibi 2000 in the mix. So I’ll add my DJ jingle

over the top (recorded by the RTA’s voiceover woman, the best in the business) and drop in air raid sirens to get people moving. Alongside that, I’ll chop into the mix, cut out the bass, add in filters, and thanks to the soon-to-be patented DJ Habibi Better-Mix Auto Sync software, I’m able to concentrate on the more theatrical side of DJing, like directing the indoor fireworks display and making sure my pointing-at-the-camera work is on fine form. ANGRY MONKEY It seems everything in this day and age is geared towards making our lives easier, making things quicker. And while the Monkey is all for that — after all, when a banana peeling machine can do it quicker than our Monkey maid, it’s a no-brainer. But sometimes shortcuts don’t always work out for the best. Like acronyms. They’re designed to make your reading and understanding quicker, and when done right — STFU is one of the Monkey’s favourites — they save time and energy. But increasingly they’re finding their way into club land, most notably in hip hop nights. First there was the sniggersome PYAO (that’s Party Your Ass Off, wordsearch chums). And then came the-WTF-name, PHAT, which, naturally, stands for Pretty Hot And Tempting. Now, far be it from the Monkey, a simian more versed in grunts to point out the inadequacies of this, but that’s F***ING TERRIBLE (no need for an acronym there). Then again, The Monkey knows of one promoter who nearly went with the night FILTH, which heinously, stood For Lovers Of Intelligent Tech House and was rightly deemed DOA and never used.
