Them vs us, EDM vs House music. Yes, EDM might be the musical equivalent of a Jaeger-bomb, all short-lived fizzy excitement focused on the drop, but everyone needs an entrance to dance music, a gateway drug as it were. Mine was funky house back in the 90s, which then progressed to breaks, techno, DnB and now my tastes include pretty much everything (apart from trance, that’s still my dancefloor kryptonite). So while I understand the angst that die hard house heads have against EDM fans, imagine the chain of discovery they’ll make as they discover original Croydon dubstep, 90s rave culture and 80s American techno, tracing the scene’s dancefloor roots. As gateway drugs go, EDM is one of the most divisive at the moment, but everyone has to start somewhere. Welcome to the dance music family… Andy

What we did

Globalfunk feat. Andy C @ The Music Room What happened in The Music Room on this night will go down in history as the best rave-up Dubai has ever witnessed. If anyone has got a problem with that opening statement, take it up with the 300 plus sweat-drenched clubbers who were still chanting the DJs’ name at 3:10am. The DNB Awards 2012 ‘Best DJ’ winner delivered a brutal bass master-class with a little help from a third deck and the crowd-surfing MC LowQui. The Ram Records top-dog slapped down classic deebee tracks from the vaults (DJ Hazard & Distorted Minds’s ‘Mr Happy’) and fresh dubplate material from the likes of Sub Focus and TC. The pace was kept high and the vibe was spoton thanks to a ‘shorts and caps welcome’ message from the organiser, and top-notch warm-up sets by local boys Somalie, Mr. Gremlin, MC OllyWood and Mr. GlobalFunk himself, Mach 4. The fact that the crowd featured several 40+ junglists, a majority of late 20 to 30 year olds and a good number of younger ravers only served as testament to Andy C’s lasting appeal. The speed of his mixing and evident passion for the genre had a clearly contagious effect on the diverse audience. A crisper sound-system would have prevented the temporary hearing loss inflicted on the walk home but what’s a bit of tinnitus between friends? You what? Olly Adams

Looking Back The 411 @ People By Crystal

While Thursday and Friday night might get all the headlines in Dubai, the party-starting people at The 411 have been extending the weekend into an all-mighty Sunday morning hangover thanks to their urban-meets-EDM weekly party. Helmed by DJ Bliss and Shef Codes, the night has quickly become something of a cult institution, thanks in no small part to the quite stunning crowd they attract every week – beautiful men and women abound at every corner of People By Crystal, making this the polar opposite to Rock Bottom at 3am. With a faithful crowd – who start packing the dancefloor from midnight onwards – and no sign of the night slowing down, it looks like the glamorous side of Dubai will be extending the weekend for a good while yet…

Looking Forward

Local News Cirque Du Soleil

We’re not short of a joker or two in Dubai – just go to a few of the more ‘exclusive’ clubs for that – but we’re very happy to have the Cirque Du Soleil clowns, acrobats and generally extraordinary people back in town. Running for 10 nights from February 6 at the World Trade Centre, the worldfamous circus and acrobatic crew will be bringing their Drailon performance to town. Tickets start at Dhs295, and will most likely sell out, tickets available from platinumlist.ae.

Infusion Records

We’re not scared to shout about ourselves in this little pocket rocket of a magazine, and we’ll soon be singing and shouting as Infusion Records is very much alive and kicking. Helmed by musical maestro Conan Manchester, the first release – out on all the major platforms including Beatport – is a collaboration between Conan and Quincy Maldano, called ‘Quincy’s Dream,’ backed up by two almighty deep dubs, and is released at the end of February.

Back to the future

If the airwaves weren’t already saturated with enough 80s hits for you, then good news is at hand as the decade that refuses to die is back in Dubai once again with 5 acts playing the 80s Rewind Festival on March 1 at Festival Park. Cheese-monkeys will head for Rick Astley (pictured), while actual music fans will be thrilled that ABC and Heaven 17 are playing live, while we had to google Howard Jones and T’Pau. Either way, there’s something for everyone, with tickets via 80sdubai.com.

James Walsh added to Stone Roses

It’s one of the most anticipated indie concerts Dubai has ever seen, as the newly reformed Stone Roses head to the city on Thursday February 21. And organisers Done Events have just announced that exStarsailor front man James Walsh has been added to the Media City line up as warm up. Tickets are still on sale starting from Dhs295, but are selling fast via thestonerosesdubai.com.

Rumours

Andy Smith, ex Portishead knob twidder, could be heading out for Deep Crates later in the year. Metallica have confirmed they’re returning to Abu Dhabi, playing at the du Arena on April 16. Sandance are rumoured to be closing out their season in May with a big weekend-long party. After their triumphant return with Andy C, Globalfunk are said to be on the case with DJ Hype and DJ Marky. Solomun could be returning to Dubai we hear... Remember the Infusion Full Moon parties? Good, weren’t they. Well watch this space (not literally, duh) as they’re set to return in the near future. John Digweed tickets are a steal at only Dhs100, good work Nasimi!

Bieber fever has well and truly started. Kill us now! The Infusion intern who showed up to work a full 90 minutes late, after a team outing to VIP Room opening, while everyone made it in on time. Sleep when you're dead!

Take one stunning beach venue, import the best beach club ethos from Ibiza, add a mouth-watering Mediterranean restaurant and you have Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE. And to top it all off, their booking policy for the last few months has been outstanding as Jamie Jones, Axwell, Guti, and more have turned the beach club into the weekend’s hottest destination. And their form continues, as on February 15 they invite down one of the rising stars of the house scene, Miguel Campbell who was responsible for ‘Something Special,’ one of the sexiest and sultriest house cuts of recent years…

Something

special

Need to know: Miguel

Campbell

On ‘Something Special’:

Whilst out in Ibiza, it became apparent that “Something Special” was going to be a great record. I knew that it would do quite well but honestly did not think that it would have the impact that it has had on our culture and my career. It is overwhelming to have such great feedback and hear so many kind comments whilst knowing that the best is yet to come.

On Hot Creations:

Some friends of mine were playing my music at last years WMC when I received a call about signing a couple of tracks to Hot Creations. Later, when I then spoke with Jamie Jones, we agreed that I would produce an album for his label. I am very proud to be a part of the Hot Creations team.

On his funk feel:

I listen to a lot of funk and disco tracks, the old 80s and 70s funk is the main inspiration for the sound I work on. A lot of the French touch was based on funk and disco too. I think there are two definite types of disco, you have the real disco stuff and you have the funk disco – it’s more the funk side of things we’re into.

On dance music’s evolution:

For me dance music was born out of hip-hop, so it’s been a real cool progression. I would never change my listening habits, and it all goes back to the roots and reggae that my parents used to listen to – it all had emotional content, which is very important to me – when I stopped listening to hip-hop and started listening to dance music it was all piano house, very emotional. There’s

something about having a fourbar loop where, every time it repeats, it’s saying something new to you and the longer it goes on, the more it says to you. That’s where Daft Punk came in and smashed it, that same style – small changes over the course of five minutes – and that’s what inspired us to do what we do now.

On making cool tunes:

Whenever I make a tune I always think, “Does it sound cool or does it sound cool for today?”. I always like to think: “If something sounds cool, it sounds cool forever.” I always try to impose that ethos on my music and, if it doesn’t work, I put it to one side and one day, a year or two year’s time, I might have an idea that I can bring back. This is what I did with Something Special, I wrote that song in 2007 and, after I began to make my album, I noticed Lee was into lots of the RnB vocals – I realised I had that track and thought it would

be pretty cool. I reproduced it and you saw the result!

Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE

It’s fair to say that in just a short space of time, Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE has become the go-to beach club in the country, and with an impressive booking record in recent months, that reputation looks set to continue.Along side that, they have an outstanding restaurant serving top-of-therange Mediterranean cuisine with a hint of japanese food, while the sun loungers and VIP beach beds are busy throughout the weekend, so make sure to book ahead. They’re also promising their first birthday in April will be a huge event, but before that hey have a big February as Uner, Larse and Michel Cleis are all confirmed, with another big name act to be announced. Miguel Campbell plays Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE, Ghantoot, Friday February 15, 1-11pm, reservation@bluemarlinibiza-uae. com, 056 1133 400.

"So you’ve tried and failed... the lesson is, never try.” The immortal words of one of the greatest philosophers of our time, Homer Simpson; and it is around about this time of the year where those words become more relevant than ever. Yes, it’s that time when you realise that all the resolutions (or as we like to call them, ‘lies’) you made on January 1st about how you were going to live a better life were, quite frankly, rubbish; you haven’t quit smoking, you have the physique of a champion darts player and you drink more than David Hasselhoff and Mel Gibson combined.

So with this in mind, we have translated a list of ill-chosen expressions that the worst of us continue to use, New Yearafter-New Year, in the naive belief that it might help turn our miserable lives around.

Glossary: You say:

We say:

“I’m going to start working out more”

“You’re going to get a gym membership that you will never use, then you’ll spend 6 months ‘working out’ why you’re now 5,000 dirhams poorer. And still fat"

“I’m going to turn over a new leaf”

“You’re going to find new and interesting ways of hiding your girlfriends from your other girlfriends”*

“I’m cutting down my calorie intake”

“You’ll waste half of January realising that you don’t like drinking vodka with soda or tonic or anything other than Red Bull. You’ll be back on the beer by February”

“I’m going to live a healthier life”

“You’re going to start using condoms instead of hope”

“I’m going to smoke less”

“You are not going to smoke less”

“I’m going to be a nicer person”

“You’re going to consider giving a tip to the poor guys that fills your petrol tank, but then you’ll realise that, because it’s an Emarat, he can’t keep tips anyway. You will then spend that money on crisps”

“I’m going to read more”

“Catching a glimpse of Infusion Magazine during a drunken fumble in a night-club bathroom does NOT constitute reading. Just go buy yourself a Kindle and throw it immediately in the bin”

“Fitness first”

“Fatness first. Fitness First second”

*N.B. This is NOT sexist, guys. Women have already found all the best ways of doing this. If you are a man, you are useless. Fact. - Dr. Michael Ross, BSc., SSc

I ndu stry stan dard He’s the larger than life DJ, and one of the biggest stars in the Dubai scene, with an impressive knowledge of music and a cult radio show, The Edge. With a big year behind him, and an even bigger one in front, we caught up with Dany Neville to find out more

2012 was a big year for you – what were the highlights? Being awarded a Gold plaque for producing Karl Wolf ft. Juicy J “Mash It Up” as well as being awarded the award for best DJ at The What’s On awards were 2 of many highlights. 2012 in general was a year of recognition and for that I am thankful. And what are you looking forward to this year? My main focus this year is wrapping up Robin’s album as well as releasing music under Dubnetikz, there is talk of TV shows and more online activations to come, I’m also looking forward to my first European tour kicking off March 19th. You’re a very passionate DJ, and never afraid to speak your mind – has that ever caused problems for you? It’s always an issue being out spoken, the industry tends to expect all artists to be politically correct and turn a blind eye on situations that damage our income not to mention our lifeline. I didn’t come into this industry through ass kissing, hence when I speak my mind/ stand for the truth, it hurts some more than most that don’t have control over my success. You’ve refused to be nominated for some DJ awards and accepted others – what, if any, media or awards do you respect and look up to? Awards that tend to be given away

by a group of people collecting envelopes filled with cash I stay away from, the very few that actually have the public vote I believe in. Again my career never depended on winning an award.... it took 12 years to get awarded Best DJ, at the end of the day the people will speak the truth. You founded Underground Procedures, a DjJcollective – what was the inspiration behind it and how is it growing? UGP is a collective of musicians from around the world representing quality sounds. Growing up not having any support from the industry I promised myself I would give the right talent a chance regardless and never fall into discriminating against talent, that’s what happened in my case coming up. I can tell you it was not a pretty sight. If you could change one thing about the Dubai club scene to improve it, what would you do? Cut out all the DJs that play ‘Gangnam Style…’ You’ve played internationally, and have been involved in some big releases, notably with Karl Wolf – do you think you could make a living full time from the international scene? I never did and never will have a 9 to 5, my Mom raised me with 3 siblings, worked 17hr shifts to make ends meet, where I am today answers that question.

Whereas other people’s survival depends on Daddy’s funding. You’ve had a very public stand off with DJ Bliss, including several Twitter battles - is it all at peace now? Was that the guy who tried to be a rapper? Ya he was funny, he’s cool you fool... What advice would you have for anyone looking to make a start as a DJ in today’s climate? Fall in love with the music first, let some be an example of how ‘Mr me too’s’ never last... undergroundprocedures.word press.com twitter.com/danyneville

Electro EDM isn’t just big in America, the sound has permeated to the UAE, and into the debut single of Dubai duo Hollaphonic. Comprised of Radio 1’s Greg Stainer and motormouth MC Olly Wood, they’ve signed a worldwide record deal with EMI, so Infusion decided to sit down with the pair to find out what all the fuss is about…

Congratulations on signing to EMI what does a record deal today actually mean, have you ordered in the private jet and blue M&Ms already? Greg: We actually have a private jet with blue M&M’s on order. We have been told it’ll arrive as soon as the first 10 million albums have been sold.
Olly: I don’t know where this M&M lark came from; that’s one of Greg’s fetishes. I’m writing this answer from a chair on a magical train that floats above Dubai (AKA the Metro) so I'm down to earth still... G6 is on order and being flown in by that dude from Iron Maiden.

Dubai Music Where did the inspiration for the group come from, have you modeled yourself on any other acts? Greg: My inspiration comes from my many years of DJing in the Middle East. I’ve realised that there is a happy medium of music which is commercial enough to please the vast array of nationalities who party here every weekend. But yet ‘cool’ enough to please the connoisseur crowd! I hope that our music will sit somewhere in the middle of the cool/commercial divide. My role models would be Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada and Daft Punk.
Talk us through the singles and the sounds your going for Greg: The first single can be described as an uplifting complextro vocal banger! Olly: The first single is pure electro pop and is designed to stick with you on the wildest journeys of your life. The rest of the singles are hush hush, but single two is immense.

What challenges did working with each other bring? Greg: Olly tends to invade my personal space quite often.
Olly: Greg doesn’t like me being close or touching him... I like touching and being close. And when will you be touring the show live? Greg: We are hoping to have a first official Hollaphonic show in Dubai in March. Expect a lot of very cool visuals and Olly wearing a penguin suit
. Greg, you’re a busy club DJ have you been dropping the tracks in your sets to gauge the reaction? Greg: Yep... since the first track was only a mere 1 minute long demo, I dropped it to test, and the reaction was simply amazing. Olly, you’re a persistent Tweeter have you made any new connections via your online presence? Olly: Yeah this little South African dude from an equally small clubbing magazine keeps sending me photos of his feet… And what are your ultimate hopes and aspirations for Hollaphonic? Greg: To be recognised among the biggest EDM acts in the world, simply because the music is that good.
Olly: Tour the world at sell out events to people that want to see us live and love our music. Their debut single, ‘I Don’t Want It To End’ is out now via EMI

MUSIC BITES Fake plastic Tories I don’t have fond memories of it at all. To find you have to do something just to feel normal is not a good road

Legendarily hardcore rock drummer Ginger Baker outlines why developing a heroin addiction isn’t such a good idea.

Thom Yorke has threatened to “sue the living s***” out of David Cameron if the prime minister uses a Radiohead song in a future election campaign. “I can’t say I love the idea of a banker liking our music, or David Cameron,” the singer told Dazed & Confused. “I can’t believe he’d like [2011’s] King of Limbs much. But I also equally think, who cares? … As long as he doesn’t use it for his election campaigns, I don’t care. I’d sue the living s*** out of him if he did.” Keane found themselves in that position in 2010, when their song Everybody’s Changing was played at a Conservative party launch. “Am horrified,” wrote drummer Richard Hughes. “I will not vote for them.” While Yorke holds strong opinions on social and environmental issues, DJing for Occupy London and attending the UN’s climate change conference in 2009, he admitted that “politics is not a fun thing to write about”. These days the Radiohead frontman tries to calm himself down – and perk up his spirits – with yoga and meditation. “I’m not as volatile as I used to be, which is good, ‘cos I’d have burned out if I was,” he said. “I can still be a nightmare, though.”

Album Reviews... 13 albums for 2013

With January a quiet time for album releases, we look ahead to the coming 12 months and pick out the forthcoming albums that you should be looking forward to

A$AP Rocky

Already postponed twice, A$AP’s debut album is firmly penciled in for a 2013 release, which is excellent news for the rap scene as the New York star looks set to be one of the bigger names this year.

Atoms for Peace

A veritable super group as Thom Yorke’s skittery electronics are fleshed out by Red Hot Chili Pepper’s Flea, REM’s Joey Waronker and Nigel Godrich (Radiohead), appealing to fans of Flying Lotus and Warp Records.

Azealia Banks

‘212’ dominated the cooler dancefloors last year thanks to its potty-mouthed electro meets rap stylings, and it’s been onwards and upwards for the New York native – with a few feuds with other acts thrown in for good publicity – ever since, with her debut album scheduled for a February release.

Black Keys

With El Camino catapulting the two-man band into the rock stratosphere, they’re likely to follow up their impressive album release ratio with another bluesy belter this year, with Dangermouse on production duties once more. All we need then is for an enterprising promoter to book them for a Dubai show...

Daft Punk

Aside from the recent Tron soundtrack, it’s all been quite from the Parisian pair of electro noiseniks, but with news that they’re roped in superproducer Nile Rodgers of Chic fame to steer their next album, except huge dollops of funk alongside their side-chained electro.

Depeche Mode

Their 2009 offering Sounds of the Universe might have been adequate, but when you have a catalogue of hits like Dave Gahan, adequate won’t do – which is why we’re pant-wettingly excited to hear that their 2013 album is a mix of soulful and live atmospherics, and should be a welcome return to form.

Johnny Marr

Smiths fans are among the most passionate, so be prepared for an outpouring of emotion when ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr unleashes his first original material since the band split over 20 years ago – early indications are driving, melodic indie-pop.

Haim

A trio of impossibly cool sisters from New York, who blend cutesy pop with bluesy rock and roll. Oh, and their first incarnation of their band featured their old man on bass until they had to tell him he was cramping their style…

Look and Listen Major Lazer

Diplo’s reggae-meets-bass project is back on track this year, and he’s roped in a diverse cast including Vampire Weekend, Bruno Mars, Tyga and Flux Pavilion to help out on beats and vocals duty.

Queens of the Stone Age

With a collaborative cast including Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor, Jake Shears and more, the highly anticipated 6th album from Josh Homme’s rock and rollers should be their best yet – he’s described it as ‘deeper, richer and stranger’ so the omens are very, very good.

Stereophonics

They unveiled their lead single ‘In A Moment’ from their new album at their Dubai show, and promises to usher in a big, bold and melodic direction for the long-standing Welsh rockers.

The Weekend

One of the stand out RnB and urban stars of the last few years – and achieving that success with muted melodies and intricate beats – we’re hyped to hear his follow up album.

Vampire Weekend

The long awaited follow up to 2010’s Contra finds the band maintain their accessible, pop-laced math rock, but they say with added ‘dark and organic’ elements, with the release earmarked for Spring of 2013.

DJ Booth: Donabelle Zuzart

A big name in the Goa DJ scene, Donabelle DJs in Ras Al Khaimah, and is the resident DJ at QDs‌

One thing you might not know about me is... I hate people ill-treating animals. My worst ever job was... Selling postpaid sim cards. My favourite ever record is... Da Hool, ‘Meet Her At The Love Parade.’ DJing is much like... My heart beating every second… Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Fabulous! As you get so much exposure to different genres, versatile clubs and styles. I’m really proud of... Being the youngest Indian female house DJ to start spinning at the age of 16. If I could change one thing about anything it would be… Trying to make people stop littering and dirtying Goa. My biggest DJ achievement to date is.... Well, I always wanted to play in Trilogy when I used to holiday in Dubai, and eventually I did! There was just something about spinning behind those decks. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... I’m very happy with this decade. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... Paul Kalkbrenner. I’m not a politician but... I think the state of affairs in the world is getting worse if not better! soundcloud.com/djdonabelle

67 year old Sabine Moreau responds after her Sat Nav took her on an 1,800 mile detour, as her intended 38 mile trip to the train station instead took in France, Croatia, Germany and finally her return to Belgium.

The BBC has apologised after a character from children’s TV programme The Tweenies appeared dressed as Jimmy Savile. In the scene, the character Max appeared in a blonde wig, wearing Savile’s trademark tracksuits and using his accent and catchphrases. He presents a Top of the Pops-style show in the episode which was filmed in 2001 but repeated on CBeebies before 9am on Sunday. Viewers tweeted about the gaffe. Kenny Senior wrote: “Are BBC trying to self destruct? Max from Tweenies dressed as Jimmy Savile just now nearly chokes on my cornflakes.” A police report on Savile, who died in 2011 aged 84, concluded he was a “prolific, predatory sex offender” who abused more than 200 people over a 60-year period.

A US computer programmer has been caught outsourcing his own job to a company in China. The software developer in his 40s is said to have paid the firm a fifth of his six-figure salary to do his job for him, and instead spent the time surfing the web. Andrew Valentine claimed his company had been contacted by another firm who feared their system was being hacked after noticing it was being accessed from Shenyang, China. An investigation revealed one of the company’s employees had outsourced his own job, paying a Chinese firm more than £30,000 to write computer programmes.

ANGRY MONKEY America is a great, great place. Incredible even. But there’s one flaw with the American dream – it makes people think they can take on the world, and beat it. It turns hip hop stars into media moguls, releasing branded vodka, embossed toilet bowls and reality TV shows watched, we can only assume, by strung out cretinous meth heads. And it seems this influence has permeated the UAE. Take some local stars for instance, who having achieved a huge amount of success in a few different fields, then take it upon themselves to become a musician and rap star. Now ambition is a great thing, but cringe-inducing attempts at rapping and nursery rhyme lyrics that hurt like a blow to the head, combined with the standard cliched video shots of clubs packed with rent-a-models, blinged up Bentleys and a ‘My inspiration is Jay Z, but I’m nowhere near as good as him’ cameo from some American rapper we’ve never heard of. Excuse me while I do a little Monkey sick in my mouth. Maybe time for a reality check, and stick to what you do best…

Monkey Out...
