After a long summer, there’s a definite sense of excitement in the air, a palpable energy about the new season. And it’s come earlier than I can remember in the last decade – outdoor events didn’t normally start in earnest until October, and even then you’d look like a drowned rat after a humid night out. But now we’ve got big outdoor events like Zedd and Lady Gaga, and club nights starting outdoors from the first week of September. Just remember not to wear any Hypercolor t-shirts on your nights out under the stars. Among the biggest early hitters is Groove on the Grass, as the boutique house and techno festival returns with the blitzkrieg beats of Berlin duo Pan Pot, who are this issue’s cover stars. We’ve got the lowdown on them, and the rest of the new season in our free 100 page issue.

What we did

Zedd @ 0 Gravity The outdoor clubbing season came alive in style last weekend when ‘Clarity’ and ‘Find You’ DJ Zedd made his Middle East debut. Zero G had learnt from previous events, and ramped up the organization and production. With more speakers, an impressive LED wall and pyrotechnics including CO2 and fire, the night got off to a great start from the first beat. With 2000 sweat soaked clubbers out in force, promoter/ organiser/DJ Dion Mavath worked the crowd nicely on warm up before Zedd took over. Although the set might have been a little bit too cheesy and commercial for the hardcore electronic music fans, Zedd played all his hits and was accompanied by a sea of voices singing along. Insane visuals and an overall solid, crowd pleasing set left Dubai looking for more from both the venue and the genre in the coming months as the season heats up and the weather cools down. – Sam Moult

O1NE Yas Island launch party, Abu Dhabi

The reopened O1NE reinstates why it deserves a place on the UAE scene – even if that place is a little out of the way from Dubai at 45 minutes drive. Out in Yas among Ikea and yawning car parks it nevertheless remains a classy venue well worth the trip. The outer shell of the venue is the first indicator you’re somewhere special thanks to an artful explosion of graffiti top to bottom, a design echoed on the customized limousines and souped-up vans that can be hired as transport. The club’s new weekly theme is O1NE Night in, with New York first up. That most celebrated of cities was reinvigorated through an abstract artistic vision: painted-on cop uniforms for the hostesses, a mesmerizing 360-degree cityscape, and private table booths each named after a different Big Apple district, lining the sides up short flights of steps. From a chilled start before midnight where you can survey the crowds from the mezzanine level booths, the club is packed just past 2am, with breakdancing and caberet girls parading the central catwalk to supplement the beats and house music and absorbing 360 screens. A stand out among rival clubs.

DUST @ Story Rooftop

Disco is a universal language. Just look at DUST: two Australian DJs as headliners, a multi-cultural dancefloor that looks like the United Colours of Dubai, and a few breakdancers to give the dancefloor some momentum. Despite a late crowd, the floor filled up from midnight and by 3am and the last tune, the club was a seething mess of limbs, disco arms and slurred singing. While Story Rooftop’s indoor lounge, with its low ceilings and dancefloor, did a sterling job, we’re counting down the days until the terrace is open and the dancing under the stars can begin again in earnest.

Sigma @ Warehouse Dubai, Level 41

Once again Level 41 was at full capacity for the latest instalment of Warehouse Dubai. The entrance queue almost reached from the lift to the Media One exit by 11:45pm, an issue promoters have assured will be rectified for anyone buying advance online tickets for their next event via a queue jump service. With Sigma, Hannah Wants and Artful Dodger on the line up, this was a cross genre event full of talent. Artful Dodger started off proceeding with the usual flow of Old School Garage dropping the classic ‘Re-Rewind’ which had the crowd singing along. Next up was Hannah Wants, an artist who has exploded on the Ibiza scene this summer with her popular Bass House sound, who’s set hit a high point with her remix of ‘Kill My Love’. Sigma closed the night in style with their popular Drum and Bass vibe which had party goers still dancing until 3am. With 3 sold out events in a row, the Southampton born event has certainly taken Dubai by storm. We can’t wait for the launch of their newest event Arcadia feat Patrick Topping at Dek on 8 on September 18.

Sunny Vibe Up @ Dusk Terrace

Sunny Vibe Up returned to the Dusk terrace for their first party of the season featuring their ever-reliable team of residents as well as inviting down some of Dubai’s best, which included Danny Kwang, Jimmy Irvine and Shadi Megallaa. Despite a mid afternoon sandstorm, the party was one of the busiest yet and with all profits going to the PCRF, everyone danced into the small hours for a great cause. With such a solid start to the season we can’t wait for their next party which features their first international of the season, Charlie P.

Hop Fest @ Irish Village

Dubai’s expat community were reaching for their Steiners as the Irish Village once again erected their familiar sawdustladen, giant air conditioned tent to greet thousands of smiley faced hop lovers for their annual 3 day festival. With over 100 labels to choose from spanning the globe, covering countries such as Germany, Italy, UK, Japan, Belgium, South East Asia and many more, drinkers were spoilt for choice. The MapleJacks, performing from the high rise stage, had a lively crowd dancing and singing along to a set filled with classic covers from the likes of The Proclaimers, Brian Adams, The Beatles, Bon Jovi & REM. Our favourite moment was trying to perform a Do-si-do to ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’ whilst trying not to spill our freshly poured Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu. Good times!

Banging thetechno drum Berlin duo Pan Pot have become one of the most consistent and important names in techno in recent time, so it’s no surprise to see them headlining at forward-thinking festival Groove on the Grass‌

Welcome to the region, what have you heard about Dubai? Tassilo: To be honest not that much and it is the first time that we will play in Dubai so both facts will make it a very interesting experience I hope. Thomas: I think we nearly played there before but the date somehow got moved so now we are quite excited to check everything out. You've almost grown up and alongside mobilee, what does the label mean to you, and what is your new direction with Second State? Thomas: Of course mobilee was one of the most important things for us and our music career. It was our first platform and with our release being one of the first on the label, we grew up together so it really means a lot to us. Tassilo: With Second State we want to move on and make the same thing possible for other artists as mobilee did for us. We have great producers such as Clint Stewart and Stephan Hinz releasing with us and we try to give them the best possible platform for their music. And you met Anja Scheider at an 'ill-fated' gig a decade ago according to your biography – what happened on the night? Thomas: Haha yes! At the very beginning we did not have many bookings so we thought we’d just do a party on our own. Not many people or to be more exact, almost nobody showed up but we booked Anja and got to know each other. This is how everything started. What does techno sound like to you, how do you define it? Tassilo: It's like a heartbeat, you can't be without it. Techno is the perfect music to dance to and lose yourself. And with all its possibilities in sound and elements, it has more to offer than any other music genre.

Thomas: Maybe it's best to get an understanding of what it sounds like to us by checking out one of our sets or releases on Soundcloud or Youtube. I hope that speaks for itself. And who's making good techno at the moment, who are you listening to and playing? Thomas: We really like Stephan Hinz. Maybe it’s bit of shameless self-promotion for our label but he is good and that’s why we signed his tracks. Tassilo: There are so many great artists out there but I agree with Thomas. We also really dig Alan Fitzpatrick, Maceo Plex and of course Ray Kaijoka. You've got a busy month with gigs for Music On in Ibiza, a trip to Chile, and several dates in Germany including Watergate – how much do you adapt your sound when you travel to different places, or is it always the full Pan-Pot experience? Tassilo: Our sets do depend on many factors like where we play, the time and the size of the venue. Even at the Music On events on Ibiza we played a bit of a different set for the Main room and the Terrace. But overall we have our favourite tracks and like to play them where ever possible to create something like the Pan-Pot experience. And how do you feel about promoting your own events like Marco Carola, it must be a new challenge? Thomas: We promote our own events in Berlin and Second State nights in cities such as London, Paris and now Amsterdam. It is a great thing to be able to be able to invite your friends or favourite DJs, like Carl Cox, who played with us at Watergate this year; so I can understand why Marco is doing his own nights on Ibiza. Tassilo: It is a lot of fun having your own events but we also want to do it for the right reasons. Groove on the Grass feat. Pan Pot & Avatism (Live), Friday September 26, Emirates Golf Course, 7pm-3am, early bird tickets Dhs180 from Platinumlist.net

DBridge over troubled waters

Not content with just bringing out the biggest names like Hype, Andy C and Roni Size, Drum and Bass night Globalfunk has teamed up with Bassworx to bring out ex Bad Company DJ and underground champion DBridge for his Middle East debut. We caught up with him to find out more about the state of Drum and Bass and why dance music should stop and start again… Welcome to the region, we have a pretty strong DnB history, what have you heard about the region? I’ll be honest, I’ve not heard a lot, which I’m pleased about. I like going to new places and having no pre-conceptions. It makes for a better experience. You attracted a lot of attention recently when you defended the state of DnB in an online blog – was that your intention, to draw attention to the genre? I never expected the response it got. My intention was to tell things how I saw it and to highlight what seemed like the daft and ill-informed perceptions from people who should know better. I was just confused by short-sighted views, coming from people who I believed to be more intelligent and in the know. With big names like Sigma and Wilkinson breaking through, surely DnB is in a good place for the next generation? Depends really, if Sigma and Wilkinson are what you

consider to be DnB, then yeah I suppose that side of the scene is healthy. What I and a lot of others do has very little to do with that, so for us things are different. We’re as underground as ever and have a loyal following. So in that sense, yeah I suppose things are in a good place for those who wish to walk our path. Do you feel like you have to stand up for DnB? If there was a DnB parliament, who would be Prime Minister? I stand for the music I represent and believe in, the artists I support and the music they create. Unfortunately, or not it’s been bundled into the term DnB. So by default I stand for it. I’d never vote for a DnB Prime Minister, we’re too divided as a scene for one person to speak on behalf of all. I’d probably lead a coup if there was one though!

What would you like to bring back to clubbing from the 1990s when you started out? I’d like to bring back life before smartphones. I’d like to see more people enjoying a show through their own eyes, not a well lit screen. Everyone is in a club supposedly enjoying a collective experience, yet seem so disconnected from what’s going on around them. And where do you think clubbing and DnB is headed, to a good place? It’s become a commercial entity now. Everyone can experience it and as a result it’s been watered down for mass consumption. EDM, DnB, House and Techno have been co-opted by greed. I’d like to see it head back underground, to shed its skin and start anew. Where are your sets at musically at the moment, what's working for you? My sets pretty much revolve around the music I release as Exit Records, and the music I make. I like many different aspects and styles, so the fun part is trying to piece it all together into a coherent musical narrative. Hopefully it's a story that people can enjoy and are surprised by.

Globalfunk vs Bassworx feat. DBridge, Thursday September 18, Casa Latina, 9pm-3am, Dhs100.

Combining a festival atmosphere, a life-size boxing ring and some of the best party tunes known to breakdancing man, the Dance Off Soundsystem are a sight to behold. Ahead of their Superheroes debut, we spoke to 3 of the 4 members, to test them on the essentials (like their favourite Rocky montage)‌

TOM

AKA DJ Cowtippa AKA MC under Gobblejob Musical weapon of choice: Operacore. Best dance move: The collapsing leapfrog (look it up on YouTube, thank me later). Favourite Rocky montage? The one with all the exercise. Uppercut, jab or low down and dirty groin kick: Can I choose Karate chop? To the balls? If you had a Boxing nick name, what would it be: ‘Tonky-Dong’. If it was a dancing duel between you and the Cuban Brothers, who'd win? We would. We might be far worse dancers, but we’re more

Cuban than them and we’d probably cheat.

LUKE AKA KB

Musical weapon of choice: I'm a sucker for anything with a broken beat. Best dance move: The drunken DJ. Favourite Rocky montage? Are we supposed to say any other bit apart from where he is jogging down the beach with the sexy music, is this a joke? Uppercut, jab or low down and dirty groin kick: Headbutt. If you had a Boxing nick name, what would it be: Kenneth "Clubhandz" Babbsley.

If it was a dancing duel between you and the Cuban Brothers, who'd win? We are the Dance Off DJs, we make Michael Flatley’s River Dance look like group epilepsy, we'd win!

DAVE

AKA Airayad Musical weapon of choice: Cats and dogs in an oil drum pushed down a very large hill! Just don't tell the RSPCA‌ Best dance move: The pretzel flip, first learnt during my contortionist years in the Russian travelling circus, it's a high-risk maneuver with maximum levels of danger that would make even The Expendables wet their French knickers! Favourite Rocky montage? When Sly first tried learning the pretzel flip whilst filming Rocky 4. Needless to say he failed and it didn't make the final cut. Uppercut, jab or low down and dirty groin kick: Groin kick. If you can take a volley to the plums then you are worthy of... another groin kick! If you had a Boxing nick name, what would it be: Dolph Blunder-rum.

If it was a dancing duel between you and the Cuban Brothers, who'd win? Contemporary Dance will win as there will be so many insane moves and groundbreaking shapes thrown by both sides, and thrown so perfectly, that nobody will ever dare attempt to throw them again in the history of humankind for fear of looking amateur, so the only dance left to perform will be contemporary dance with ribbons, poi and bongos! But out of the duel, we would win with a mind-blowing coordinated karate chop pretzel flip volley to their ging-ganggoolies. Superheroes feat. Dance Off Soundsystem, Dek on 8, Thursday September 25, 6pm-3am, free entry.

Kate Simko –

The last time… Electric Days are back in action with another strong femaleaccented line up, including American DJ, producer, film soundtracker and Get Physical signing Kate Simko…

The last time I came to Dubai I thought… There is a lot to explore in the city, and I wished I had more time. The last time I played a Live set was… In Ibiza outdoors on the sea for Boiler Room. The last time I loved my job was… Today, recording harp for my next EP. The last time I complained about my job was… Today, when I found out a show in four days might be cancelled. The last time I played jazz was… Good question. Probably improvising on the piano, but not proper jazz standards. The last time I paid for a night out was… In Munich a couple weekends ago on a night off. The last time I worked on a TV soundtrack was… Earlier this year.. There's talk of collaborating on a China TV series soon.

The last time I lied was… I really try not to lie, unless a man asks me my age :) The last time I laughed out loud was… On the tube ride home today. The last time I played for Electric Days was… September 2013. It's hard to believe it's been one year! Very happy to be back in Dubai again. See you soon!

Tracks

Ahead of the Plus/Minus relaunch at their new Level 41 home, we caught up with their Diynamic headliner, Karmon, to take a trip down musical memory lane…

What was the first track you played out? Aquasky vs Masterblaster – ‘Beat the system.’ What would be your wedding song? Hmm, I never thought about that. It will be a nice piece of classical piano music. What song makes you switch off the radio? Anything from James Blunt or Nickelback. And what song could you listen over and over again? Matthew Herbert – ‘It's Only (DJ Koze Remix)’ Which track do you wish you'd made? Hard. There is so much good music on the planet. I would go for Michael Jackson – ‘Smooth criminal.’ Which of your tracks do you think is the best? Turning Point.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? Pharell. What was the first band or DJ you were into? Toto. Is there any music you can't listen to? Actually no, I can listen to any type of music. Music is‌ Emotions.

Plus/Minus feat. Karmon and &ME, Friday September 19, Level 41, Media One Hotel, 9pm-3am, Dhs120 on the door.

Fast-rising house music DJ Patrick Topping has hit the big time recently with several Beatport No.1s, and now makes his debut in Dubai courtesy of brand new monthly night Arcadia. We caught up with him to chat Hot Creations, DJ names and partying at Berghain.

No stopping Topping

You've had an impressive rise to dance music fame – how can you explain what it's been like to an outsider? It’s been amazing and such a whirlwind. The touring and gigs have increased massively in the last year, so I’m just taking it all in and making the most of it. Did you ever flirt with having a DJ name, or has it always been Patrick Topping? Yeah when I had my first release about to come out I thought for ages about what name I should use! I had always just played under my own name, but then when that track was due to come out I thought really hard for a name. But I wasn’t comfortable just picking out a random word. If it was more natural like a nickname then I would of done it. When was the last time you paid to get into a club? The Berghain/Panorama Bar in Berlin 3 weeks ago. Everyone has to pay, including guestlist, it was worth it though! What did having Beatport No.1s mean for your career? Well I’m lucky enough to be doing this full time now. ‘Get Beasty’ reaching number 1, really helped, then ‘Forget’ doing the same straight away after, definitely give me massive exposure.

You came to Hot Creations by sending in your demos – did you do anything creative to catch their attention, what was your reaction when they first got in touch? It was actually a friend of my mine that sent a demo in, without me even knowing. He just told them about some of the names that had been playing the unsigned tracks I think. Obviously I didn’t believe him, haha. The Hot Creations team have a reputation for hard partying – have you had to play catch up? I don’t think I’ll ever catch up! How does your music making process work, do the beats come first, the melody, the bass? And who taught you to make music, or was it all self learned? It depends really, I don’t have a set formula. I’ve found it’s best to look for samples and sounds first and run with something that you like, if that’s a drum sound or vocal or snyth sound etc, instead of trying to make a track with a predetermined sound in my mind. Arcadia feat. Patrick Topping, Thursday September 18, Dek on 8, 3pm-3am.

Music News... Mau5 trap

Megalithic company Disney recently launched a lawsuit against Deadmau5, after he attempted to trademark his mouse head logo. Deadmau5, AKA Joel Zimmerman, isn’t exactly the shy and retiring type, so he promptly hit back with his own lawsuit, claiming that they used his track ‘Ghosts ‘N Stuff’ on a short cartoon without his permission. Just in case his lawyers letter hadn’t quite hit home, he then Tweeted Disney with a picture of the letter, before cheekily asking at the end if he could ‘have a trademark.’

MUSIC BITES Stage diving, cool right? Not so when cake-flinging EDM DJ Steve Aoki tried the other week, as on take off, he pushed the DJ booth over and killed the entire DJ set up. Skills bro.

Pioneer DJ competition This year’s competition is well up and running, and after the preliminary rounds, moves into the semi-finals stage on September 19 and 20 at Story Rooftop, and the final at 0 Gravity on September 25. The eventual winner will not only walk away with their head held very high, but they’ll win a pair of CDJ2000 Nexus, as well as gigs for audio tonic, an EP release through Lowbit Records, a mix compilation through the Groove Society and of course an interview in Infusion Magazine. Get down and show some support for our local talent! Facebook.com/pioneerdjmea

Album Reviews... Lone – Reality Testing House

I

facebook.com/magicwirelone



You might not know much about Lone, but if you’ve been anywhere near a decent dancefloor in the last year, you’ll know all about his seismic ‘Airglow Fires’ track, a bumping, 6 minute journey that takes in angelic harmonies, tinkling keys, roundhouse bass and skippy beats. The good news is that on his fifth album, Nottingham born Matt Cutler has backed up that dancefloor heat with a soaring, disco-glazed, hip hop meets electronic album that’s one of the best we’ve heard this year. While previous albums, notably the also excellent Galaxy Garden, mined a more techno-friendly path, Reality Testing sees Cutler blend hip hop ethics with hazy house and ruptured beats, creating a more sunny side up version of Boards of Canada. And alongside straight ahead house cuts like ‘Vengeance Video’ and the Detroit-style ‘Aurora Northern Quarter,’ there are plenty of intricate beats and downtempo glory to make this his most satisfying and accessible album yet.

Royal Blood – Royal Blood Indie/Rock’n’Roll



I

royalbloodband.com

What do you get when you combine the White Stripes and Muse? Apart from an easy (and yes, lazy) journalistic analogy, you get Royal Blood, a punk-rocking Brighton duo who are sweeping all before them. The band, bassist and singer Mike Kerr and drummer Ben Thatcher, have scored the fastest selling rock debut in years, and promptly took the No.1 spot a few weeks ago in the UK. Live, they’re a ferocious proposition, all pounding bass, muscular drums and sonic squall. They’ve brought that attitude to their self-titled debut album, a rocket-charged rock’n’roll ride that reaches a high point with hit single ‘Come On Over’ and doesn’t let up for the rest of the album. Creating their trademark sound by lacing a bass with guitar strings (and a secret set up of pedals and amps, we’re told), they’re a two man riff factory that deal exclusively in (Led) Zeppelin sized monster tunes.

MEETTHE

PROMOTER

Running since: Mostwntd, established March 2014. Run by: Managing Partners of Mostwntd, Jessica Glunz and Sharif Saci Venues worked at: Jessica Glunz: Armani/Prive, Sanctuary and Trilogy. Sharif Saci: Cavalli and Nasimi Local residents: Resident DJ for BangBang Roberto Mermand, Resident DJ for Dirty Laundry Sam Farsio

Who are you and what do you do? Mostwntd represents and provides event management, entertainment and promotions for premium boutique brands and businesses in the UAE. A service delivering guests to a world of seductive opulence, style and glamour drawing on over 15 years of industry experience working with internationally recognized entertainment and hospitality brands. What events do you currently run? Right from the inception of Mostwntd, what was more appealing to us was a daytime camaraderie on a Saturday with the perfect setting, the right choice of cocktails and of course nothing beats classic vocal house with a sundowner. This is what we have brought to life with Bangbang at Pure Sky Lounge, a bi-weekly Saturday event. Our second adventure is Dirty Laundry at GQ Bar, a cutting-edge and trendy weekly event held every Tuesday Night. What’s the key ingredient to building a good brand and promoting? In three words, originality, persistence and consistency. That’s the foundation however, one must always be willing to adapt to the noise sometimes, a little tweak here and there but sticking to your vision is vital if you want to witness longevity. What’s been the biggest mistake you’ve made? Not so many mistakes, rather lessons without the benefit of a mistake yet. At this stage we are nurturing our partnerships and keeping room for growth. Whatever the mistake or difficultly that we face, there is a moment where there is a possibility for triumph.

And the biggest success? The very fact that we are a fully functional company is our success. I believe the moment will come where we will be feasting upon many more successes along the way! How underground can you take your vibe, or how commercial will you play it? Our sound is predominantly house ranging from uplifting vocals and bouncy rhythms to a more refined selection of deep house. How do you balance what you want to see and what the crowd wants, and when have you got that wrong and right? We are lucky that our events are targeted to a niche clientele and the word goes around quickly amongst them, we are prompted and so we deliver. How do you see the nightlife scene evolving? In recent years we have seen a growth and an interest in diverse genres of music. This has triggered the interest in artists to be associated with the city and a much wider variety of options in nightlife available for everyone to find their personal taste. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

DJ Booth: Jako Diaz

Freshly crowned as the new resident DJ at GQ Bar after a month long competition, we spoke to Italian DJ Carlo Servodio AKA Jako Diaz to find out what to expect‌

One thing you might not know about me is... That when I get off from DJing I’m a shy person but when I’m in the booth, I transform into another person. My worst ever job was… Working in a building company. Winning the GQ/Fame residency was… A dream, and I thought “I have to win the competition.” The DJs that inspire me are… Gorgon City, Hannah Wants, MK, Disclosure, Root 94, Ben Pearce and others... but I identify and am inspired by Duke Dumont. I’m really proud to have… The passion for music, there is nothing more beautiful! What track could you drop in every set? Josh Butler - Got A Feeling (Pleasurekraft Bontan remix). I can’t live without my… Girlfriend, she’s a font of inspiration! My biggest DJ achievement to date is… As a producer to have hit the Traxsource Top 20, and as a DJ I’ve played in front of 5,000 people. What is your guiltiest pleasure? Risking more! If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be… Daft Punk!

Looking Closer

Weird News... Speaking in tongues

Anyone waking up from a coma is great news, but learning a new language while you’ve been out is an added bonus. 22 year old Australian Ben McMahon woke up from a week-long coma after a car crash to find he could only speak Mandarin. His first words to a nurse were, “Excuse me nurse, I feel really sore here”, in Chinese. He then asked the nurse for a pen and paper and wrote in Mandarin: “I love my mum, I love my dad, I will recover.” His newfound language skills baffled his doctors and family. Despite taking Mandarin at school, he had never been fluent at the language. He’s now being offered Chinese speaking tours of his hometown, and he’s even been made a host of a Mandarin TV program.

WEIRD PIC We all fancy a bit of extra TLC at times, but one Giant Panda went a stage further, and according to experts, faked signs of pregnancy so she would be given five star treatment, and an increase in her favourite food, buns.

Party hard

We normally either plead ignorance, or tell our other halves that the taxi is ‘just around the corner’ as we attempt to stay out a bit later. One Bolton man took this to extremes recently though after telling his girlfriend that he’d been kidnapped, so he could stay at the house party longer. The 32 year old claimed he was being held against his will at a house in Bolton and would not be allowed home until he had paid a £50 debt. His girlfriend called police on Friday and officers tracked his phone to Shurmer Street where they found him. He was fined for wasting police time, and now presumably doesn’t have to worry about staying out late as he’s single.

Geordie expats flock in there 100’s to donate to the Children of Gazza

DUBAI, U.A.E: Local Reggae, funk & soul night “Sunny Vibe Up” was over run by hordes of Newcastle United supporters recently as they ran a charity event with all proceeds going towards the humanitarian crisis in Palestine. Using the hashtag #SaveTheChildrenOfGaza to promote the event led hundreds of semi literate Geordie expats to believe they would be donating to help the offspring of troubled sporting hero Paul Gascoigne after he was found drunk outside his home. “H’way man, we came to support this worthy cause as we can relate to what Bianca Gascoigne is going through. Back in Newcastle, we’ve all found a family member drunk outside our house at some point” said Cheryll Slappah from Tyneside. Event manager Ahmed Dubijad said. “I’m humbled by the support from the people of Newcastle. I can’t believe the turn out. We’d run out of Newcastle Brown Ale by 11:00pm and the event looked like a cross between Geordie Shore & St James’ Park”

Cool

Will there be any dead air and love lost between Channel 4 co-presenters Eve Jaso and Rob Kaye when they take our Cool Test?

EVE

ROB

My best claim to fame is… Tricking everyone in a press Holding David Blaine’s hand line up at New York fashion and wrist while he did a magic week into thinking that Jennifer trick, making 52 cards turn Anniston was a friend of mine into only 12 hearts. I made only to be introduced to her later sure no cards slipped through on at the after party, #Awkward! his sleeve. They didn’t, it was She ended up making a joke of amazing! it calling me her BFF for the rest of the night. Have you ever used your name or fame to get out of trouble? All the Ch4 presenters were Only once whilst being thrown out for a movie night, so I of Harrods in London for cheekily asked a cinema to give out ripped jeans. I said ‘do the whole Channel 4 team an wearing know who I am’ only to be upgrade, the movie was full. I you tried to blag us Platinum seats, told ‘no’ and escorted to the it didn’t work and got shot down! door. The funniest radio experience I’ve had was… I got tired of Eve telling me how a girlfriend she has been Rob revealed a secret on air, great all her Ex’s, so I called each that he Veet’ed “certain” parts to them live on the air to find out of his body! It made us laugh so of truth. Turns out she wasn’t hard, that I cried and couldn’t the bad. Well apart from being breathe or talk! that unhealthily obsessed with her cat! The coolest radio station in the world is…

In the UAE, Channel 4 Dubai of course! We have the most banter in the office and it’s Channel 4, of course. never safe to leave your Facebook open in the studio!

Eve Jaso vs Rob Kaye The coolest number in my phone book is… Although Eve told me to say her For fun nights out DJ Bliss number, the coolest would have and Calum Best, for music to be Bassem Youssif. I met chat Fuse ODG. him whilst working in Cairo and we’ve kept in touch ever since.

It’s not big and clever but…

My lovely home is a homeless It works! Well sort of... cats sanctuary. Your answer to everything is…

That’s cool! (I definitely Dude! I say it way too much... overuse this haha!).

The best insult you could give each other is…

Need me to lend you my tube Wolverine is only a cartoon of Veet for that unwanted hair character and sadly won’t Rob? be able to marry you!

The verdict: Crazy cat lady vs Veet happy Rob, we’re going with a score draw on this one. A year’s free supply of Infusion’s to everyone!

AVATISM VAKANT - BERLIN. GER

FULL LINEUP TBA... ...

It’s 5pm somewhere...

Not only do GQ have some of the best food we’ve had in the city, their cocktails are off the chart good. So, we asked their head bartender to give us the lowdown on three of their signature cocktails…

Flight 1020

The Flight 1020 is an innovative twist to a classic gin cocktail called the Aviation. We started off by infusing Jose Cuervo 1800 with squid ink to make it jet black. Next we muddle Kiwi fruit with Violet and Maraschino liqueurs, our homemade cherry syrup, and fresh squeezed lemon juice. It is shaken and served in chilled Martini glass with a red sugar rim. This cocktail is meant to stand out visually and be complex on the palate, any Tequila aficionado will definitely be pleased. Specs: • Jose Cuervo 1800 (45mls) • The Bitter Truth Violet liquer (10mls) • Maraschino Liquer (10mls) • Cherry Syrup (10mls) • Lemon juice (20mls) • Muddled kiwi fruit • Garnish with red sugar on rim of martini glass

Deconstructed Sangria

During summer, any casual drinker loves a cold glass of Sangria. We’ve created the best in Dubai, hands down. The base is La Vendemia Rioja wine from Spain, spiced up with a dash of Hennessey VS and Cherry Heering Liquer. Next, fresh orange, apple, lemon slices and strawberries are added, then stirred with ice to chill. We finished it off with our homemade fresh orange juice foam, which provides its unique texture and flavour balance. This concoction took us the longest to perfect, and like all good things it was well worth it. Definitely one of the best on our list. Specs: • La Vendimia Rioja Red Wine (100mls) • Hennessey VS (15mls) • Heering Cherry Liquer (15mls) • Sliced Srawberries, • Oranges, apples and lemons • Top with Fresh orange • juice foam

Mezcal Aparenté

By far the most memorable cocktail on our current menu. The Mezcal Aparente turns heads every time because of its presentation in a hickory smoke filled cloche. Simple yet precise, this libation is comprised of Jose Cuervo Tradicional Tequila, Ramazzotti Amaro Italian liquer, Agave syrup and is finished with dashes of plum and cherry bitters. These ingredients are stirred until properly chilled then finished with hickory smoke. By evoking all of the senses, this perfectly balanced cocktail is my personal favourite.
