PORTFOLIO

This Portfolio represents a selection of academic works realised over the past three years, whilst I’ve been developing my creative side in IED, Istituto Europeo di Design Milano.

This experience gave me the possibility to increase my design and technical skills, as well as to improve the group work attitude. Besides travelling and observing the beauty of architecture and design, I also had the possibility to work with various people from different cultural backgrounds, giving me a different perspective on global interior design.

I am in constant search of improving and gaining new knowledge through reading, drawing, designing and practising, but also working in the field with experienced people from whom I can continue learning. Design never stops.

PROJECT 1

BEST WESTERN

OBJECTIVE Creating a functional lobby that would bring an exclusive experience to Best Western members, making them spend more time in the lobby. The design has to fit a 16mq module and to be applicable to any Best Western Hotel. SOLUTION Studying the chameleons changing features, the 16mq module based on the Golden Ration is adaptable, customisable, and, therefore, functional, based on organic shapes and verticality. Mainly designed for the loyal customers of Best Western, the services suggested are the Kindle Rental Machine and the self-service area with refreshments accessible only on loyalty points. The module can be repeated in all Best Western Hotels, either as a whole block, or divided based on needs.

RIGHT PAGE: This 16mq module is designed according to different people that have different needs and it perfectly satisfies the BW target, mostly business people travelling for work. Following the user analysis, the spaces are divided into working area, lounge, self-service and private area. The proposed services and zones can be used through the points accumulated on the BW loyalty card, therefore, encouraging members to use it more.

The purpose of lights is not only to illuminate the space, but also to highlight the flow, creating a path in the space. Moreover, they are programmed to adapt based on daytime.

KINDLE RENTAL MACHINE Once connected to the personal area on the Best Western application, the loyal customer can gain a QR code that needs to be verified with the Kindle Machine in order to release a tablet.

BRISE SOLEIL Privacy is very important for the customers of Best Western, thus, the adjustable brise soleil, not only block the direct sun lights, but also allow the customer to work in his own privacy.

THE STRUCTURE Adapting traditional materials, veneered timber wood, the structure is easily assembled, bringing a modern fluid shape to the 16mq module. It is a blend between open and close and provides seating for all.

16mq MODULE RENDERS The designed module represents a comfortable area for each individual, whether they want to socialise, work or prefer to have their own piece of silence. It is a luminous area, well isolated from noise due to sound absorbing materials and it is easy to build. Based on thorough research, the materials render the module more adjustable and applicable to any context, with possibility of expansion to all Best Western Hotels.

PRIVATE AREA

The private area allows the customer to, not only check their personal information, but also to access other info on their location: restaurants, events, maps, shops and so on. They can also shop anything through the BW app that would be then delivered to them personally, without interrupting their routine.

PROJECT 2

THE BLONDE SALAD

OBJECTIVE Re-designing the headquarters offices of The Blonde Salad into a functional and aesthetic space that would translate the online experience of their blog and further endorse it on their social media platforms. SOLUTION Analysing the different users and jobs in the office, the space was transformed into a functional workplace with an efficient and ingenious flow that allows all users to communicate through meeting rooms and common areas. The whole space was divided into two parts, one for working and one for socialising. The office part has two meeting rooms, one for clients, one for TBS Crew, that can be joined into one with the use of openable glass wall separating the two. The division throughout is done through curved surfaces to improve the flow and the materials used are all luminous or reflective to bring light into their below ground office. The social area provides a space for eating all together as a joined community.

TOGETHER AS A FAMILY One of the most important values that The Blonde Salad has been persistent about, was the fact that they work as colleagues but they treat each other as family and they have very close relationships. One of their demands is to be able to fit together at a table and socialise at least during lunch. As a result, this expandable console table was chosen, giving them the opportunity to eat all together, or putting it aside during an evening event.

KEY ELEMENTS

COELUX _ NATURAL SUNLIGHT MIMIC Their office is below ground, and the thing that is really missing in their space is natural light. Fortunately, Coelux is a breaking boundaries innovation that brings the sun into any space, without letting anyone notice that it is a natural light simulation. This is one of the key factors proposed to The Blonde Salad office. It has been positioned in the kitchen, giving the sensation of a fresh and luminous space.

“PERFECT DAY LIGHT” by YELLOW DESIGN in collaboration with LUCTRA 800 plastic buckets encapsulate LED lights and transform the space into an unique interactive space, where people can take a break from work and just enjoy it with colleagues. This would be the extra value to transform this office into a 24/7 streamable live feed.

TECHNICAL DETAIL

THE DESKS The office desks are highly customisable, with integrated plugs for easy access and hidden unneeded cables. It also has optional insulating panels that click onto the desk and, depending on the arrangements of the tables, can provide a fully insulated working booth. The desk also comes with a built-in drawer and a space for little accessories like pens or pencils also adopted into the design. The extra effect is given by the writing board surface that can come useful to The Blonde Salad employees.

KEY FEATURES: THE OUTLINES In this section, the hallway is also displayed. It is a passage from the working area to the social area and aims to draw attention and create some optical illusions for people passing under. It is also welcoming for their potential clients. The kitchen plays with thin outlines and bold colours bringing focus on The Blonde Salad’s identity.

KEY FEATURE: SMART ON_OFF GLASS The key features used in the project are a mix between bold volumes and thin outlines, creating contrast between shapes also through the use of colours. Transparency is a leading element in this design, as it is for The Blonde Salad, with the people admiring them. The on-off smart glass, gives them the possibility to choose when they are transparent and when they need their privacy. Glass is mostly surrounding their offices, thus allowing the light to pass through.

TBS CREW OFFICE The choice of colours and materials for this office comes from a meticulous study of the brand and aims to endorse it and improve it through functionality, modularity, aesthetics and extra services proposed to The Blonde Salad. It should not look like a regular office, it should be “Instagram-ready for the company that works with online platforms and blogs about style, fashion and lifestyle. The render presents the e-commerce / editorial office, with their much needed storage. Rather than having a lifeless, monotonous storage, it was suggested a chic, sophisticated one that would empower both the employees motivation to work, but also the brand identity of The Blonde Salad.

THE OFFICES

LEFT: This is where the finance and legal team can work without being disturbed, being the only fully closed office in the space. The storage was customised in order to hide all their documents and to give the impression of a bigger area. RIGHT: Here, the whole view from the corridor is displayed, showing the meeting rooms and the tunnel, which is a feature of separating work side from social side of office.

THE MEETING ROOMS

The project presents two small adjacent meeting rooms separated by the smart on-off glass panels. Hence, this not only offers the opportunity of privacy, but the panels are fully or partially openable, allowing the two rooms to become one. This modularity grants employees the occasion to have more substantial meetings and to fit more people, including possible clients.

DINING ROOM WITH THE EXPANDABLE CONSOLE TABLE This place is where The Blonde Salad Crew can have their lunch all together, all as a team, or even organise events and have clients in. Through the window door, the welcome area is visible, giving the transparency they wanted.

PROJECT 3

REPLAY

OBJECTIVE Recreating the layout using a multi-sensorial experience in order to attract and maintain the customers’ interest, but also to bring light on a new line of jeans, aiming to develop a new modern urban store. SOLUTION Creating a pop-up composition that has the wow effect, using the latest technology and attracting the customers’ interest. Boosting social media through customer marketing, related to the concept and engaging with the outside world. Resembling a cocoon, the layout makes people feel protected and intrigued and want to learn more about the experience and the products. Furthermore, the project reveals also a spot in the store where customers can choose the material they like and customise their jeans with a tailor made service, making them feel comfortable in their own skin.

THE CONCEPT The concept of cocoon is meant to emphasize the five sense, by creating a bond between customer and the brand. The cocoon is made from a series of tubes that light up when they are touched. The latest material technology is linking the pipes together: a material that reacts to the heat

of the touch. Through a collaboration with Dana Zelig, Replay “weaves” into the space, bringing technology, tradition and fashion together.

VERTICALITY Section D-D’ displays the two selling experiences, the new collection and the Maestro collection. The clothing rails is never the same, playing with liniarity, verticality and horizontality, with the purpose of creating a spirited and lively mood.

MARKETING This section emphasizes the different marketing techniques used by Replay in this project. Aside from the cocoon, there is plenty of signage spread throughout the store, but most importantly, on the second level, there is a tremendous LED screen for the people in the relax area.

THE HYPER COLLECTION Firstly, people can still see the cocoon experience through the pillars, to make it an unforgettable participation. Secondly, on the top floor, the Hyper Collection stands out due to the ingenuous rail system: manequins that seem to be floating, holding on to the slothing rack. They are suggesting elasticity and flexibility, like a second skin.

CUSTOMISATION These views put accent on the customisation area. For Replay, jeans symbolize the fabric of freedom, “Jeans reflect just who we are: two pairs are never the same, just as no two people are never the same” They are a way of representing one’s self and customisation does that. Moreover, they wanted to bring focus on the artistry in which the jeans are created. Hence, people inside the store can watch as their jeans are being handmade.

THE COCOON The main element of the store, the cocoon, is a passage of transformation. Before entering people might feel the judgement of the society and feel forced to live filtered lives due to the social media pollution. Inside, as their curiosity emerges, they forget about the society pressure behind and explore the various materials, creating the desire to reinvent their origins and reveal their inner beauty through the customisation process that follows or the shopping experiences.

PROJECT 4

AMAZON

OBJECTIVE Reconfiguring the logistics warehouses and work scenarios, through an innovative layout, easily applicable to other locations. A new interior vision of all the staff areas, to make everything more functional and efficient. A well-distributed space that would reflect and strengthen human relationships and the community. SOLUTION The research on Amazon employees revealed a few negative apects about their lack of break time and poor working conditions, thus pushing this project in the direction of the employee wellbeing, work efficiency and nearby community. The flow of the delivery station is structured to improve the overall productivity. It is a design project focused on reshaping the surroundings, adding possibilities and centralising the community in order to create a place to work, live and belong. Enriching and integrating the Amazon brand, the new design will bring amazonians and local people together into a central core to enjoy a new reinvigorating environment that will enhance the work lives of the employees and fulfill all their needs.

CENTRALISE THE COMMUNITY

CO_EXIST CONCEPT

A NEW PLACE WHERE LOCALS CAN DISCOVER AMAZON TOGETHER WITH EMPLOYEES

Co. is a latin prefix that stands for “together in harmony”. The idea behind the project is that the space is designed to co-exist with any Amazon warehouse and can be built anywhere worldwide at any chosen time.

ADD POSSIBILITIES

Nowadays, most working spaces are lacking the human part to it, they are not fluid or user-friendly.

A CIRCULAR DESIGN TO SHARE MOMENTS

CO-EXIST is exactly the opposite; It tells a story; it is a space that takes into account both the functionality and the humanity in a space; it is a flexible and efficient space. WHY? Because this project’s vision is made entirely of

BELONG

circular shapes. Where circularity refers to the closed-loop system in which no-one is left out , giving a positive

WORK

feeling and represent harmony of the whole. This design isn’t just living for the Amazonians, it’s a circular design to share moments, that will change the way we live and see the suburbs, a new place where locals can discover and belong to Amazon together with its employees. Designed to be shared, CO-EXIST promotes new relationships and serves THE COMMUNITY.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

AMAZON CORE DETAIL The core, enlightened from above through the skylight, is made entirely from recycled cardboard and shows multifunctionality through the custom made lights and plants inserts into the columns to give the idea of freshness and eco-friendly. The natural light takes part in the emplooyee wellbeing.

AIM AND PROPERTIES OF THE CORE The core breaks through the two levels, and aims enhance the quality of the work and well-being of the employees by refreshing the atmosphere and creating a luminous environment. On the bottom part of the core, employees can interact inside it, entering the conversation pit, whilst on the top floor, due to security reasons, people can gather only around the core. Here, they can eat, meet people from the surrounding community and even allow them to get a glimpse of the Amazon workers downstairs through the cardboard pillars. FIRST FLOOR

GROUND FLOOR

FAÇADE RENDER

Transparency is an indispensable quality for Amazon, which was fully integrated into design through this type of structure surrounding the whole building. It was chosen in order to allow the passing of air and light inside the main building, allowing people to see in and out, through the frames, giving the idea of a sense of community and inclusiveness. The game of volumes and climbing plants aims to enhance the fresh new design of a delivery station and create an immersing place to belong.

GUIDING FLOW AND EFFICIENT DISTRIBUTION As the employees arrive to the delivery station, the easy and efficient flow leads them directly to the changing rooms and briefing areas that were distributed logically around the main glass elevator.

MOTIVATIONAL THEME The aim of the reception is not only to provide information, but also to be a warm, welcoming and motivational space for the people who work in the office.

DESIGN THROUGH MODULARITY AND RE-ARRANGEABILITY Amazon frugality is the main value of the company, therefore the office design should be in-line with the properties and qualities of Amazon. For this reason, the project clearly took into consideration the use of recyclable materials such as cardboard and wood and focused a lot on the employees needs proposing a furniture system that gives them the possibility to choose between different configurations as they please. The office is pivoting around the CORE, the main element of the building. As it was mentioned before, the core’s structure is made entirely in cardboard, material that is repeated throughout the whole design. Inside the core, there is the conversation pit, filled with greenery and natural light from the top, which serves to reinvigorate and refresh the employees during work.

REFRESHMENT POINTS _ AMAZON OASIS In order to reach the delivery station, employees have to pass the security check (Right image). The project proposal was to improve the check in by increasing the number of the metallic doors and improve the efficiency. Once the working hours have started, employees have limited break time and strict regulations regarding beverages. Hence the introduction of the OASIS will solve this problem. Here, the employees can hydrate during work and be provided with a fresher surrounding that replicates the design and brings a peaceful feeling. This design can also be expanded throughout the warehouse.

INCLUSIVENESS AND TOGETHERNESS

The top part of the core is where everyone is invited. This area aims to bring community together and encourage people to socialise and share moments making it a network of relationships. The analysis and research pointed out a flow of people in the surrounding areas, so the project challenges and invites them to discover the hidden part of Amazon. Through a separate entrance, they can blend in with the Amazon employees during their break time and enjoy fast and healthy meals through the Amazon GO service This design fully represents the true identity of Amazon, through the richness of the plants that can be seen al throughout the building.

AMAZON ROOFTOP AND GARDEN

The new delivery station will encourage people, not only to come and go, but to have an experience and live the space day and night. In the Amazon Garden, both employees and the local community can enjoy various activities such as meeting people, but also reading, relaxing and enjoying the fresh air. The space aims to create a new gathering spot, the Amazon delivery station, by reshaping the surroundings, enriching the life of the employees and of the citizens and requalifying the suburb areas around the world.
