Supporters’ Connections to Thompson Health Run Deep What inspires giving? Gratitude? A desire to honor a life well lived? A wish to make the community a better place? Sometimes, it’s all of the above. And often, it’s deeply personal. The connections run deep, making each gift meaningful for both donor and recipient. After all, there are many wonderful organizations in need of support but the individuals, families, groups and businesses featured in this report choose to support UR Medicine’s Thompson Health. Some are just beginning their philanthropic relationship with Thompson, while others are steadfast supporters, continuing a legacy stretching back generations. Whether they are first-time donors or old friends, and whether their contributions are big or small, all are valued partners in our journey to excellence. The journey got an incredible boost in 2012, when — more than a century after Thompson was founded — we affiliated with UR Medicine.

Our donors have witnessed tremendous growth taking place since the affiliation, with more specialized services close to home, and yet they also understand Thompson remains responsible for its own debt and its own fundraising. This understanding fuels the incredible generosity demonstrated when our health system identifies a need. The community rallies, just as it did in support of the Dr. Laurie Sands and Constellation Brands Breast Imaging Center, when we determined how much a second CT scanner could benefit our patients, or even when we asked for support of our Annual Fund. We know our donors believe in our community health system and its promise. Their faith in our associates and our leadership is something we are deeply grateful for. Living up to – and even exceeding – their high expectations is something we strive for every day in all that we do. It is our privilege, as is sharing the stories featured in this report.

A Family Celebrates a Fitting Tribute Posing with a portrait of Dr. Laurie Sands in the lobby of the new Breast Imaging Center are her mother, Mickey Sands, daughter Abby Bennett and granddaughter Azalea.

More than 20 years after her death, the impact of Dr. Laurie Sands continues to resonate throughout the region where she practiced medicine and where her family is known for exceptional philanthropy. From the Sands Cancer Center on the campus of UR Medicine’s Thompson Health to the endowed University of Rochester professorship in her name, Dr. Sands remains a key figure in the delivery of high-quality health care. In 2015, her legacy began to impact even more lives, with the opening of the Dr. Laurie Sands and Constellation Brands Breast Imaging Center in Canandaigua. Located across the street from Thompson Hospital, the center offers leading-edge 3D imaging technology, UR Medicine Imaging radiologists, same-day results and a breast health navigation team to help patients following a diagnosis. And on the same day staff members conducted tours of the 7,000-square-foot facility during an open house last September, several members of Dr. Sands’ family joined other donors, gathering to celebrate the long-awaited center, which is expected to benefit the women and men of the community for years to come. The event was a culmination of a capital campaign which received a tremendous boost in 2014, when the Sands family and Constellation

Brands announced a generous matching gift for the new facility. “This state-of-the-art Breast Imaging Center continues to enhance the best-in-class care Thompson Hospital provides to so many in our region,” said Rob Sands, President and CEO of Constellation Brands. “Our gift reflects the Sands Family’s and Constellation Brands’ ongoing commitment to ensuring that our area’s health service providers have the resources necessary to meet the growing needs and demands of our evolving community.” Rob Sands was joined at the opening by Dr. Sands’ husband, Dr. Andrew Stern, as well as other family members including her mother, Mickey Sands, daughter, Abby Bennett, and granddaughter, Azalea. “I am touched to know this beautiful new center is named for my mother,” says Bennett. “I enjoyed touring it with my family at the opening event and I particularly enjoyed the speeches by my father and my uncle Rob. They told beautiful stories about my mother, her experiences as a doctor and in the community.” The day was meaningful to Mickey Sands as well. “I think it’s the most wonderful facility for the people of our community, and for our family, it’s a very important tribute to our daughter,” she says, adding, “She was a wonderful doctor and she took very good care of everyone.”

Providing Comfort in the Community Denise Chaapel considers Thompson Health “a gem.”

Having a high-quality breast health resource in the community provides a sense of comfort for Denise Chaapel. With family members and friends affected by breast cancer, Denise is all too familiar with the implications of the illness, and it is why she is an avid supporter of breast health awareness. As the exclusive dessert vendor at Thompson’s Bra-Vo for Breast Health Fashion Show, Denise donated everything as a show of her support. “The level of care and expertise brought into the hospital makes Thompson one of the anchor organizations in our community.” “I’ve had a grandmother, aunts and friends impacted by breast cancer,” explains Denise, the owner of Sweet Expressions and co-owner of Mobile Music, both on Main Street in downtown Canandaigua. “Some have lost their battle, and others are still fighting their battles. Knowing we have a top-notch facility in our own back yard is truly a gift.” As a third-generation Canandaigua native and mother of three, Denise has deep roots within the community and a lifelong connection to Thompson.

4 | A Community Effort

As what she likes to call “frequent fliers,” she and her family have experienced many aspects of the health system. It has given her a great appreciation for the commitment the health system makes to the community every day. “Thompson has been incredible,” she says. “The convenience is superior and the communication from the staff is wonderful. What they tell you is going to happen, is what happens.” As the current co-director of the Canandaigua Business Improvement District, Denise believes it’s important – both as a resident and as a business owner – to give back to organizations like Thompson. “Thompson Health is a gem,” she says. “The level of care and expertise brought into the hospital makes Thompson one of the anchor organizations in our community.” Denise adds, “Having the new Dr. Laurie Sands and Constellation Brands Breast Imaging Center is just another step in bringing health care in this community to the next level, and it’s something I am proud to support.”

Generosity Blooms within Family Business

Breast cancer awareness is an important cause for Keith and Wendy Rockcastle, owners of Rockcastle Florist in both Greece and Canandaigua. As avid supporters of Thompson Health, donating flower arrangements for the Bra-Vo for Breast Health Fashion Show was a way to support the initiative to raise awareness. With family members as well as previous employees who have survived breast cancer, the Rockcastles know the importance of receiving quality care. “When my sister was diagnosed, we wanted the best care possible. Thompson was the best place to be for treatment,” explains Wendy, whose family also supported her mother through her diagnosis and treatments as well. “Thompson has high-quality care and a warm atmosphere,” Wendy adds. “It’s the best of both worlds.” Keith says that as the previous owner of Rockcastle Florist, his mother taught him to give back to the community, and “Thompson is a top priority for our support.” Wendy recommends the Foundation Office as a tremendous resource for anyone who wants to make an impact within the health system. “There are many different programs at Thompson in need of support,” she says, “and the Foundation can connect you with the avenue that is the right fit for you.” Keith and Wendy Rockcastle, owners of Rockcastle Florist, believe Thompson breaks the mold in health care.

Coming Full Circle Margaret and Randy Farnsworth recently joined the George Eastman Circle, designating 100 percent of their gift to Thompson.

For Randy and Margaret Farnsworth, Thompson Health has been an important part of their family’s health and well-being for their entire lives. Both were born and raised in the area, and both are devoted supporters of Thompson. “We are blessed to have such a great hospital in our community,” says Randy. “I was born prematurely at Thompson, and both of our parents were treated there. It really hits home to know your family is getting the best care in a time of need, and Thompson is committed to providing the best care to everyone.” “Contributing to the George Eastman Circle was a logical step in continuing to provide steadfast support to Thompson,” says Randy, “and one we are proud to make.” As third-generation business owners, Randy, Margaret and Randy’s sister Martie Buttaccio oversee the operations of Farnsworth Auto Group. It started in 1917 in Shortsville as a Chevrolet dealership and now encompasses two Canandaigua locations with Cadillac, Buick, GMC, and Chevrolet. As the family approaches the 100th anniversary of the business, they have a true understanding of the commitment needed to thrive for generations, much like Thompson.

6 | Steadfast Support

“Thompson’s commitment to quality and continuous improvement in an ever-changing environment within health care is really superb,” says Margaret. “The dedication from all the associates, volunteers, and board members allows them to work toward a common goal of providing the best care possible.” Randy adds, “The benefits of the University of Rochester affiliation are already being felt in the area. Thompson has been able to bring additional services and expertise to the community to provide an increased level of care close to home.” Randy and Margaret recently joined the University of Rochester’s George Eastman Circle. As members, the couple have the option to support one or more of the over 200 funds available through the university with a five-year pledge. Designating 100 percent of their gift to Thompson – where their personal interests and passions are greatest – they have committed to unrestricted support wherever the health system needs it most. “Contributing to the George Eastman Circle was a logical step in continuing to provide steadfast support to Thompson,” says Randy, “and one we are proud to make.”

The Past Inspires Support for the Future Longtime area residents and former Board of Directors members Anne and Bruce Kennedy support Thompson Health every year, without fail.

Thompson Health has been an ingrained part of both Bruce and Anne Kennedy’s lives for decades. After all, Bruce is a Canandaigua native and Anne first came to Canandaigua as a summer resident at the age of 5. “I can’t imagine not having Thompson Hospital – it is such a vital part of our community,” says Anne. “Moving permanently to Canandaigua in 1970 with three small children, it was gratifying to hear from Rochester medical friends that we were fortunate to be moving where there was an excellent hospital and staff. We can be thankful and proud that reputation continues.” Both Bruce and Anne have helped ensure that it continues. Serving on Thompson’s Board of Directors for 36 years, Bruce was one of the instrumental members in the “People Helping People” capital campaign to fund the current hospital located on Parrish Street as well as every hospital fundraiser while he was on the board. Anne served on the board for 25 years, many of those as secretary, managing to be present at every meeting. Both Bruce and Anne look back on their board service as a rewarding, gratifying and educational experience. They consider themselves fortunate to have witnessed the exceptional leadership of people like former board president Marvin Sands, former administrator Anthony Raguso, former President and

CEO Linda Farchione Hawks and current President and CEO Michael F. Stapleton, Jr. “Not only is the community involved with Thompson, but Thompson is involved with the community,” notes Bruce, former owner of Kennedy Funeral Home and Kennedy’s Furniture in downtown Canandaigua. “Thompson has been recognized as a great hospital with exceptional service. Also, the employees, staff and board members have been involved in many outside organizations, which has contributed greatly to enhancing the communities in the area.” Over the past few years, Bruce says, the connection with the University of Rochester has been integrated beautifully by the administration, bringing many additional physicians, adding another dimension to the high-quality care. Anne adds, “Many people prefer a small hospital for the intimate feeling. Now, patients can still feel the same caring but also have the advantage of the affiliation with UR Medicine.” The Kennedys’ involvement with the hospital and their appreciation for how the hospital has continued to grow have inspired them to include Thompson in their community giving for over 30 consecutive years. Their commitment to steadfast support is just one example of our community’s selfless generosity.

Teaming up for Thompson Thompson Hospital got closer to its goal of purchasing a second CT scanner thanks to guests at the Foundation’s Annual Gala. These generous donors included (in the photo at left), Craig Schmackpfeffer, Dr. Nancy Brown, and Drs. Christine and Angel Boev as well as (in the photo at right) Andy Griffith, Christine and Tim Keef, left to right.

When more than 300 people gathered at the Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua for Havana Nights – the F.F. Thompson Foundation’s Annual Gala – they enjoyed a “fiery fiesta” filled with music and savory Cuban cuisine. But these party guests were thinking about more than warm breezes and cool drinks. They were thinking about others. Specifically, those who come through the doors of Thompson Hospital with potentially life-threatening emergencies, needing timely and accurate diagnoses in order to receive the most effective treatment. “The sooner we can begin treating stroke patients,” he added, “the better the long-term outcome.” Following a brief informational presentation by Chief of Diagnostic Imaging Dr. Ben Wandtke, auctioneer Doug Emblidge started the gala’s “cash call,” seeking donations in support of the purchase of a second, 64-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner. Manufactured by Siemens, the nearly $650,000 piece of state-of-the-art equipment is slated to be located adjacent to the Emergency Department.

8 | Special Event

“Time is always of the essence when treating patients with internal injuries, blood clots, and stroke,” Dr. Wandtke said. “There are times when the existing CT scanner is receiving maintenance or is in use, with a sedated patient undergoing a procedure, for example. Having a second CT scanner will ensure a scanner is available to rapidly and optimally care for patients in emergency situations. The sooner we can begin treating stroke patients,” he added, “the better the long-term outcome.” As Emblidge worked the “cash call”, Andy Griffith was just one of the two dozen donors who raised his hand to pledge his support. Although, like many of the others who stepped forward, he’s a longtime Thompson supporter. “As a local real estate broker and business owner for 32 years, I believe that it’s important to support the local healthcare system,” he says. “It’s an important asset to our community.” Thanks to Andy and others who were also compelled to ensure the life-saving equipment could be acquired, a collective total of $17,750 was raised within a matter of minutes, bringing the hospital’s goal that much closer to reality.

Generations of Giving Participating in the Rose Walk each year, (from left) Gemma, Sara, Karen, Dave, and Jesse Gotham support Thompson and other cardiac patients.

Dave and Karen Gotham welcomed both of their children at Thompson Hospital more than 30 years ago, and as each child grew into adulthood, Thompson was there to treat their various ailments. Even so, nothing had a greater impact on the Gothams than Dave’s cardiac arrest in 2003. It was the catalyst to bringing the family together each year for the Rose Walk, in support of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at the Fralick Cardiac Rehabilitation and Fitness Center. “I have been going to the cardiac rehabilitation center every Friday since I started my rehabilitation back in 2003,” Dave says. “And now I walk five miles every day.” The aftercare Dave received following his heart attack helped him to regain his physical health, and also provided a sense of well-being in recovery. It’s why the Gothams support the program, so other patients can have the same experience, regardless of their ability to pay. “Everyone involved in the Rose Walk truly cares about the well-being of others,” says Karen.

“Many of them have been through a cardiac event and they encourage each other and ask each other how they are doing. It’s nice to see such compassion and camaraderie.” “We hope to start a tradition with Gemma to teach her about giving back and helping others in need, and this seems to be a great start.” Compassion is something Dave and Karen hope to instill in their granddaughter, Gemma, who first participated in the Rose Walk at 5 weeks old. Last year, with the help of Grandpa, 2-year-old Gemma donated a jar of coins for the cause. Says Gemma’s mother, Sara, “We hope to start a tradition with Gemma to teach her about giving back and helping others in need, and this seems to be a great start.”

‘Truly a Joy’ For August Lindsay, retired vice president of operations for RevChain Solutions, Thompson Health is “a great place to be.” With more than 500 hours in his first year of volunteer service for Thompson’s Transportation Department, Augie — as he is more commonly known — recognizes the health system is special. “The philosophy that Thompson lives by is impressive. The staff is more personable than at other hospitals — not just with each other, but also with their patients. It’s truly a joy to work with the medical staff, the volunteers, and the patients,” says Augie, a Lima resident and father of two. Transporting the residents of the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center is one of Augie’s most enjoyable experiences. “I really get to know the residents and see their improvements. I always strike up a conversation and try to make them laugh,” he says. Augie’s passion for Thompson started long before he was a volunteer. Nearly 10 years ago, his wife Donna was diagnosed with cancer and received her treatments at the Sands Cancer Center on Thompson’s main campus. Now cancer-free, Donna is a medic for a local volunteer ambulance. Impressed with the level of care his wife received, Augie wanted to show his gratitude. Volunteering his time was the best way to give back to the hospital that has given him so much. “I plan to volunteer here until I physically cannot do it anymore,” he says. “The philosophy that Thompson lives by is impressive. The staff is more personable than at other hospitals — not just with each other, but also with their patients. It’s truly a joy to work with the medical staff, the volunteers, and the patients.”

August Lindsay takes great pride in helping patients at Thompson like Paula Schlegel.

An Opportunity to Say ‘Thank You’ Carol Criss, left, found a special way to show gratitude to her primary care physician, Dr. Susan Landgraf, right.

Held each year on March 30, National Doctors’ Day honors the men and women who dedicate their lives to caring for others. For Carol Criss, it’s a great reason to recognize her physician, Dr. Susan Landgraf, for her dedication and compassion over the last 20 years. “Making a difference in others’ lives is why I became a physician in the first place,” she says. “Carol’s gesture reiterates why we practice medicine each day.” “No matter how busy her day, she always comes into the exam room with a smile,” Carol, a retired speech pathologist, says of Dr. Landgraf. “She’s approachable, truly takes the time to listen, and gives you all the time you need to ask questions.” “She makes you feel like a whole person when you are with her – you’re not just an appointment,” Carol adds. It is Dr. Landgraf ’s vigilance and intuition that Carol credits with her life. After a suspected episode of vertigo brought Carol into the office, Dr. Landgraf recommended she see a specialist to rule out any

further complications. It was quickly discovered there was more going on than met the eye. Early intervention and treatments resulted in a full recovery from a potentially fatal ailment. Dr. Landgraf, a member of Thompson Health’s Canandaigua Family Practice, says she is honored by Carol’s kind words and support. “Making a difference in others’ lives is why I became a physician in the first place,” she says. “Carol’s gesture reiterates why we practice medicine each day.” “No matter how busy her day, she always comes into the exam room with a smile,” Carol, a retired speech pathologist, says of Dr. Landgraf. “She’s approachable, truly takes the time to listen, and gives you all the time you need to ask questions.”

A Fitting Gift, in Gratitude for Quality Care In celebration of the wedding of daughter Susan, left, Elinor Wormer, right, made a gift to a place that was considered a blessing for their family.

After losing her husband of 61 years in October of 2014, Elinor Wormer learned she would have something to celebrate in 2015 when her daughter Susan surprised her at Christmas with news that she and longtime partner Edward (“Ed”) Chippero were engaged. Susan is the University of Rochester’s senior counsel for labor and employment and Ed is a general supervisor for General Motors. Though they had planned to marry after retiring, her father’s death proved the catalyst for moving up their timeline. “After Dad’s funeral, I stood there watching my mom saying goodbye to Dad and observed my siblings standing with their respective spouses and children, and I realized how important it was for Ed to become my husband sooner rather than later,” Susan says. In July 2015, the couple exchanged vows at their home on the shores of Lake Ontario. Since this was not a first marriage for either of them, they asked guests to make a donation to a charity in lieu of a wedding gift. For Elinor, there was one obvious choice for her donation – Thompson Health’s M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center. In 2010, Elinor’s husband, Dr. Donald Wormer, had been diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia. Though

Elinor and Don enjoyed spending their retirement divided between their family home in Portville, Cattaraugus County, and their condo in Daytona Beach Shores, Fla., they moved to Thompson’s Ferris Hills at West Lake in 2011 to be near Susan and their son, Dr. Thomas Wormer, a Canandaigua surgeon. In 2013, when Don’s disease had progressed to the point he needed specialized care, he moved to the Continuing Care Center. A general surgeon for 28 years in Olean, Dr. Wormer settled in nicely, quickly befriending the staff and checking on other residents to ask how they were doing. The family says it was as though he was still a practicing physician, “making the rounds” at the hospital. Providing quality care and comfort, the Continuing Care Center was a blessing for the entire family, according to Elinor. “It seemed only fitting that I make my donation in celebration of my daughter’s wedding to the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center in recognition of the excellent care Don received there during his last year of life,” she says.

Giving, From a Professional and Personal Perspective As the largest domestic resource for reclaimed and sustainable wood products, Pioneer Millworks in Farmington is all about giving back – both to the environment and the local community of which they are a part. For Jered Slusser, Pioneer Millworks’ Northeast reclaimed design expert, supporting Thompson Health is important from a professional and personal perspective. It’s why he helped secure an in-kind donation of reclaimed timber fireplace mantels for the Dr. Laurie Sands and Constellation Brands Breast Imaging Center. “We have had co-workers diagnosed with breast cancer,” explains Jered. “Supporting the Breast Imaging Center was a cause that we were happy to be a part of – and it was great to incorporate the use of our materials as a way to give back to our community.” A Bloomfield native who is now a resident of Geneva, Jered has been a part of the local community his entire life. With both parents volunteering as EMTs for more than 20 years, he describes his first experience with Thompson Health as simply “overhearing the name on the scanner while my parents were out on a call.” Over the years, he has witnessed the growth of the health system. “We have had co-workers diagnosed with breast cancer,” explains Jered. “Supporting the breast imaging center was a cause that we were happy to be a part of – and it was great to incorporate the use of our materials as a way to give back to our community.”

Jered Slusser and the team at Pioneer Millworks appreciate convenient access to quality health care and showed their appreciation with an in-kind donation.

“The diversity of services now available truly helps instill confidence in our community,” he says. “We know we have quality care, close by, and don’t need to travel all the way to Rochester for great service.” Indeed, instead of traveling to Rochester, many of Pioneer Millworks’ employees take advantage of the services at Thompson. “It’s a great group of passionate people, much like our own company,” Jered says.

‘No Better Place to Give Back To’ John Ventura, district manager of Canandaigua Vision Automotive Group, is committed to ongoing support for Thompson Health.

With three businesses located in the Canandaigua area, John Ventura knows the importance of supporting the community. It’s why his decision to support UR Medicine’s Thompson Health was an easy one. “Thompson is a large part of this community,” he says, “and there is no better place to give back to.” As district manager of Canandaigua Vision Automotive Group, John has many employees and customers who have received care at Thompson. And as a member of the community for nearly 20 years, he knows the importance of having an option close by when it’s needed most. When one of his two sons got a fish hook lodged in his elbow, for example, he needed emergency care and Thompson was there. “Thankfully, Thompson was easy to get to and we didn’t need to drive all the way to Rochester for treatment,” says John. “The level of service at Thompson was great. They got us in and out in a timely fashion.” Last year Vision Automotive Group was a cart sponsor for the Thompson Health Golf Classic, which benefited the Dr. Laurie Sands and Constellation Brands Breast Imaging Center.

It was the first time Vision had served as a sponsor for a Thompson event, but according to John, it won’t be the last. “I look forward to continuing support in whatever way is good for the hospital,” he says. “Thankfully, Thompson was easy to get to and we didn’t need to drive all the way to Rochester for treatment,” says John. “The level of service at Thompson was great. They got us in and out in a timely fashion.”

A Lesson in Community Support Canandaigua Academy student Katie Compton, left, teamed up with Michele McElheny, Ryan Macomber, and Richele McElheny from The Country Ewe for a community event to support Thompson.

For Michele McElheny, owner of The Country Ewe, giving back to the community was instilled at an early age. As a little girl, she would place pennies under children’s pillows at a local orphanage, and she remembers her grandmother serving those less fortunate on holidays. This foundation of giving inspired The Country Ewe owner to create the Struttin’ For a Cause Fashion Show to benefit the Breast Health Navigation Program at the Dr. Laurie Sands and Constellation Brands Breast Imaging Center. “Sometimes in a busy life, we lose sight of the foundation that a community provides,” Michele says. “I wanted to put together an event for younger generations to learn about supporting the community and how working together can have an impact on the greater good.” After Michele teamed up with 40 Canandaigua Academy students from Barbara Landon’s Business Cooperative class, her vision came to life one evening in May at the school. A year of planning, an army of community support, and a special guest appearance by Jessica Lahr, Mrs. New York America 2015, made

this an event to remember. With the help of Michele’s daughter, Richele McElheny, and The Country Ewe’s webmaster/graphic designer, Ryan Macomber, the catwalk came to life. “I wanted to put together an event for younger generations to learn about supporting the community and how working together can have an impact on the greater good.” “The whole experience was really spectacular,” says Richele, buyer and online sales manager at the store. “Everyone was united and it brought the community together for a great cause.” The cause is also a personal one. In 2006, Michele’s sister lost her battle with breast cancer. “My sister knew a lot of people in the community, and she had a lot of great resources, but she still had a hard time navigating through the process and I can’t imagine how people with fewer resources could do it,” says Michele. “This program can help them, and it’s a free service.”

Kids Make a Difference for Kids From left, Katie Outhouse, Annie Collins, Ericka Bliss, Jaime Snell, and Alex Gikis helped Canandaigua’s City and Town Summer Day Camp children raise funds to help other local children at Thompson.

The annual six-week Summer Day Camp program run by the town and city of Canandaigua is all about playing, learning, and making a difference in the community. This year, UR Medicine’s Thompson Health was the beneficiary of the program’s good will. “Each year we try to choose organizations within the community that may not always be thought of as helping children and their families,” explains Jaime Snell, senior recreation counselor and 16-year veteran of the camp. “We are always thinking about children in our community,” adds City of Canandaigua Recreation Director Katie Outhouse. “This year, we wanted to focus on kids struggling with an illness, and that led us to Thompson Health.” Reaching out to Thompson, camp organizers learned about the Foundation’s “wish list,” which includes current needs and requests of various departments throughout the health system. An item that immediately jumped out at them was the request for a TV/DVD player and cart for the Emergency Department. “You never think about the little things like a TV — that was such a great idea,” says Katie. “Kids always like to watch movies.” Director of Critical Care Joshua Kulp says the addition of the TV/DVD player and several DVDs

has already provided many benefits for young patients in the E.D. “Offering movies to our pediatric patients eases the tension of waiting for test results, ultimately allowing us to provide better care,” he says. “We also use the movies as an icebreaker to engage children in conversation, which helps build trust and makes the visit easier.” As Summer Day Camp counselor Annie Collins knows, helping kids is a rewarding experience. When asked what her favorite part of being a counselor is, Annie replies, “Making a difference in kids’ lives.” Teaming up with Thompson Health ensures just that. “We are always thinking about children in our community,” says City of Canandaigua Recreation Director Katie Outhouse. “This year, we wanted to focus on kids struggling with an illness, and that led us to Thompson Health.”

Making the Most of a Matching Gift Tracy Gilbert has been a part of the Ladies Pink Fly Golf Classic since its inception 13 years ago, raising funds to increase education and awareness of breast cancer in the community. Supporting Thompson’s new Breast Imaging Center has been especially meaningful to Tracy. Not only have family members and friends been diagnosed with breast cancer, but a few years ago, Tracy had a scare of her own. “After a mammogram at a different facility, I received a letter in the mail telling me that I needed to schedule another appointment as a follow up,” she recalls. “No phone call. No person to speak with. Just a letter.” “Having the Breast Imaging Center back then would have been great. I would have spent less time waiting and worrying,” she adds, noting, “You can cope with anything if you are informed and advised on what steps need to be taken.” Tracy Gilbert was thrilled when she learned her employer offers a company match for associates who participate in charity events.

“Thompson is very involved in helping the community and having the Breast Health Navigation Program is just one of the ways they go above and beyond,” says Tracy. “I am happy to be able to support such a great cause.”

30 | Maximizing Giving

One of the best things about Thompson’s Breast Imaging Center, Tracy says, is the Breast Health Navigation Program. The program, which received the proceeds from the 2015 tournament, involves nurses who provide support and information each step of the way following a diagnosis. “It can guide you through the healthcare system during an extremely difficult time,” she says. Given her longtime dedication to breast health, Tracy was thrilled a few years ago to learn that her employer, SBA Communications Corporation, was offering a company match for associates who participate in charity events. Tracy, the company’s regional site manager of operations, jumped on the opportunity. Every year since, she has been able to secure a matching donation for the Pink Fly. “Thompson is very involved in helping the community and having the Breast Health Navigation Program is just one of the ways they go above and beyond,” says Tracy. “I am happy to be able to support such a great cause.”
