The May Board meeting was a special meeting. It was part of our board development and succession planning project lead by Deborah Claesgens. A few weeks before, we had the board development piece and this meeting dealt with succession planning. You may remember that in October 2016, I gave the board 5 year notice of retirement. Things are progressing well and I am proud of the way the board is stepping up to the challenge.

DreamMaker Special Event The story of the Aladdin Ballet, based on the original tale from One Thousand and One Nights, comes to life for one performance only on Friday, June 30th at the Eureka High School Auditorium with an original performance by Dance Scene Studio dancers and the Ink People’s Sundance Ballet Company members. Colorful characters and spell-bounding choreography will take audience members on a magical ride through a land brimming with a lively marketplace, a mysterious Cave of Wonders, and a grand Arabian palace, all realized by dancing adventures.
Directed and choreographed by Sundance Ballet Company Artistic Director, Carrie Badeaux, she has fashioned a mesmerizing production complete with locally hand painted backdrops, a “flying carpet” that swirls around the stage, special guest illusionists, and of course an abundance of playful dancing characters. In addition to the Aladdin Ballet, the second half of the show will feature non-Aladdin themed dances including Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Tap, and Belly Dance pieces. The Sassafras Belly Dance Company and 555 Contemporary Dance Company will perform new works. Additionally, the Sundance Ballet Company will premier variations from the ballet classic, Don Quixote and Badeaux’s restaging of A Chorus Line’s “One,” both highly entertaining and danced en pointe.
The enticing folk tale features Cain Towers dancing as the poor thief Aladdin, Adriana Granados as Princess Jasmine, and Brooke Grammer as the magical Genie. Towers states, "I like story ballets where you can think about the characters and bring them to life by way of dancing and acting.”
Aladdin Ballet will be performed Friday, June 30th at 7 p.m. at the Eureka High Joining them on stage are close to one Auditorium-1915 J St. in Eureka and is hundred student and community dancers, suitable for all ages. Linda Hartshorn Fiber Artist
This month, Ink News spoke with Linda Hartshorn, an award winning fiber artist whose creations are a delight to all the senses. (Well, they may not taste good, but 4 out of 5 isn’t bad.) Currently, she and the Handweaveavers and Spinners Guild are working on a new studio in the basement of the Ink People’s new building. What is your favorite art medium to work in, and why?
I am a weaver and a dyer, and I work with yarns and dyes. I use all different fibers in my work, but my current favorites are silk, bamboo and tencel. In addition to yarns that are already dyed, I can also dye yarns using natural or commercial dyes. This gives me a wide variety of colors to work with. Color is a very important part of my work. I also love geometry, and looms are uniquely suited to create wonderful patterns and designs. I create my own weaving drafts and most are designed using a computer. My goal in weaving is to create textiles with wonderful patterns that are structurally sound and have lots of color.
When did you first figure out that art was important to you? I have always been a maker. As a small child I always wanted to make things. I still do. I worked with fabric when I was young and I sewed many of my own clothes. In high school I had a wonderful art class where we could make whatever we wanted with help from the instructor. It was a wonderful environment where we could play music and be really creative, very unlike the rest of my classes. I did my first weaving in that class, not really knowing what I was doing, and I did batik dyeing also. Many people think art is exclusively about painting and drawing when it is so much more than that. Who is your art mentor? My favorite fiber artist and greatest influence is Bonnie Inouye. She continually breaks boundaries with her work and has taught the weaving community so many things. As weavers we are really standing on the shoulders of giants and building on the work of so many who came before us. I
10
first learned to weave on my own using books from the bookmobile, so I consider all the people who wrote those wonderful books my teachers. Later on I was able to take a few classes from Nancy Kennedy at the Ink People, and she continues to be an inspiration to me. Finish this sentence: My art is my... … life! What advice would you offer someone just beginning their exploration of their own artistic self? Pursue the things that interest you. Following your passion will take you places. Allow yourself to experiment and make mistakes, build on what you learn. Learn from others but work on developing your own style and your own expression.
