TATTOO : CARE AND MAINTENANCE MARISSA YOURELIS, 22ND OCTOBER 2018

Caring for your new tattoo is very important as with the correct care, your tattoo can heal quickly and without infection, and prolong the vibrancy of the ink. Below are some tips on how to care for your new tattoo and ensure it remains in pristine condition over time.

IMMEDIATE AFTERCARE

Immediately after receiving the tattoo, the artist should apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly and cover the tattoo in either a bandage or plastic wrap. This wrap prevents the tattoo from getting infected from any bacteria and prevents the tattoo from rubbing and getting irritated. After a few hours, ensure your hands are clean and remove the wrap. Gently wash the tattoo with fragrance-free soap and water. After gently drying your skin, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly, although keep the wrap off. This allows your skin to breathe. While your tattoo is in the healing process, it is important to wear sun-protective clothing and call your artist or doctor if there is any signs of infections.

DO NOT:

- use sunblock on tattoo until it is completely healed - scratch or pick at the tattoo - wear tight clothing over the tattoo - go swimming

DAY TO DAY CARE

The first day you might notice fluid, possibly some blood and extra ink, extruding from the tattoo. Do not panic as it is normal. Your tattoo will start to heal and develop a dull, cloudy appearance. Ensure to wash your skin gently with a fragrance-free soap and alcohol free moisturiser. Your skin will begin to feel itchy about a week after you got the tattoo. In order to relieve the itch, use a moisturiser several times a day. Do not pick at any scabs or try to pull them off as they can form into scars and sometimes can remove the ink. By the second or third week, the outer layer of the tattoo should have healed while the lower layers can take up to four months to completely heal. By the end of the third month the tattoo should look as vivid as intended by the artist. Ensure to use cool water when showering as scalding hot water does not only hurt, but can fade the ink over time. These caring techniques can be used for a number of weeks to ensure that the tattoo remains in good condition when in the process of healing.

PRODUCTS

It is important to use mild, fragrance-free soap, or a tattoo cleanser, to clean the tattoo. Popular soap options include dove and neutrogena, although for the first few days use a petroleum-based ointment to help the tattoo heal nicely. After three days you are able to switch to regular moisturiser, such as aveeno and curel.

LONG TERM TIPS

In order to prevent the tattoo from fading or degrading you should keep the tattoo clean, stay hydrated, watch what you wear to avoid abrasion and constant sun exposure, and avoid excess weight gain or weight loss. After the tattoo has completely healed, ensure to protect it by applying sunscreen, which is SPF 45 or higher. This prevents the tattoo from fading quickly and ensures the colours stay as vibrant as the artist intended. “Aveeno”, October 2018, Photographer Marissa Yourelis

TATTOO : IS YOURS TRENDING? MARISSA YOURELIS, 22ND OCTOBER 2018

Tattoos are an expression of your personality that is with you permanently. Therefore, when choosing your tattoo it is important to pick one that is timeless and personal. Although, it is very difficult to pick something truly original as we are constantly influenced by what is currently trending. Even though there are many different styles, colours, subjects, and locations of tattoos, typographic tattoos are an extremely popular style of tattoos. Typography tattoos have been a go to for many, many years. As technology has advanced over the years, the creation of thinner tattoo needles allows finer and more delicate tattoos. This meaning that the thinner needle creates a more precise line and expands the creative possibilities in design. In 2018, the most popular typeface families are typewriter and cursive styles which includes the fine-line trend. The cursive style has been very popular as they remain the classic typeface that does not date. One of the most trending styles of cursive tattoos are the fine-line scripts. These fine-line scripts are very popular as they are minimal and can often be hidden well, as they are most popular on the wrist and rib cage. This meaning that the fine-line tattoos are often done in black or grey as they convey a simple and minimalistic style. The large rise of fineline scripts are in response to popular celebrities, like Kylie Jenner and Hailey Baldwin, sharing images of their tattoos on social media. In order for cursive styled tattoos to be legible and still have the original designed form, you should make sure that you outline and it is not too small. The best way to get a tattoo that you are in love with is to hire an artist. By hiring an artist, you ensure that the tattoo is not only perfect but has a creative flare. Lettering artists will ensure that your tattoo is trendy and that the cursive fonts remain legible over time.

Typewriter styled typefaces are rising in popularity as they incorporate the “vintage” aesthetic trend into the tattoo. Many of the typewriter types are used in minimal tattoos of one or two lines of text. The text is more commonly not accompanied with images as the visual style of the tattoo is, as though it was typed in a paragraph through a typewriter. Another reason for this is that as time passes and the tattoo begins to fade, the typewriter typeface will remain legible while any cursive type will eventually become difficult to read. Therefore, typewriter styles have become very popular as they are timeless, remain legible as time passes and creates a beautifully simple design.

Many tattoo artists across the world assist individuals in being able to hide embarrassing and regretful tattoos, such as their ex-boyfriend’s name. They have used outstanding calligraphy and typographical lettering to create another tattoo of words that can be covered up from the image underneath. Various types of creative processes are used, for example being able to employ bold letters to cover large tattoos or the tattoo artist’s recommendations of what could be done. Many individuals will come in regularly to get the tattoo done. This depends on the skill and time efficiency of the tattoo artist. “Angel”, (Laura), 18 Ocotober 2018, Photographer: Dijle Ozer

Many tattoo artists come from an art backround, which has led them to practice within the fields of typographical elements, including size, kerning, typefont and the list goes on.
