Tamil New Year Celebration Tamil Heritage Month initiative was started by Tamil Canadian community activist Neethan Shan, in collaboration with two prominent educational organizations, Arivakam Canada and Canada Tamil Academy in the Fall of 2009 to celebrate, recognize, promote and advance Tamil language, culture, histories and people in the diaspora around the world. The first ever THM celebrations took place in 2010. In 2011, the Tamil Heritage Month committee launched a petition to request municipalities to proclaim January as Tamil Heritage Month. In January 2012, the municipal governments of Pickering, Ajax and Markham joined the efforts with their official proclamations. Today, after 5 years, the effort has grown tremendously with formal proclamation in 15 municipalities including Pickering, Markham, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Toronto, Brampton and Ottawa, with recognition by many school
boards in the GTA and by all three leaders of the political parties in the Province of Ontario. In 2014, 24 Tamil Canadian organizations and 18 Tamil Canadian media worked together to make the year most successful year ever. In 2015, the team hopes to achieve provincial and federal proclamations, along with expanding to other provinces in Canada and other cities around the world. THM team also hopes to go deeper beyond the celebration of arts and culture, to the celebration of contributions of Tamils to different sciences, literature, philosophy, economics, politics, architecture etc. For more information, visit www. tamilheritagemonth.com

Tamil & Japanese New Year Thaiponkal has been celebrated for over 2,200 years by Tamils worldwide including India, Sri Lanka and now the expanding Tamil Diaspora worldwide. Ponkal is a non-religious festival celebrated over four days to honour and thank Nature and Agricultural livestock for supporting livelihood. The Ponkal had been typically a thanks giving celebration. The sun, the soil and the supporting livestock were thanked for their services to the man-kind. But later certain Hindu rituals seemed to have influenced this celebration. However, today it is being celebrated as a Cultural ceremony. Even the Tamil Christians in Sri Lanka and Tamilnadu celebrate not only as a thanks-giving ceremony but also a Tamil New Year celebration. Professor A. Sanmugadas a research scholar in Tamil studies, University of Jaffna, and his wife, worked with Japanese Professor Susumu Ohno, from Gakushuin University in Tokyo, on the relationship between Tamils and Japanese for 20 years. Professor Susumu Ohno published numerous books and papers on the correspondence between Tamil and Japanese languages in their phonological sounds, words and their meanings, sentences, literary contents, prosodic patterns, etc.
10
Ohno has clearly shown correspondences in certain Tamil and Japanese cultural phenomena as well. One such correspondence that exists between the Tamil New Year’s festival called Thaipońkal and the Japanese celebration of Koshōgatsu, the celebration of “Little New Year”. Tamil harvest festival pońkal is celebrated on Jan 14-15. Japanese harvest festival ‘Koshogatsu - rice harvest’ is also celebrated on Jan 14-15. Ohno has made a thorough study of this subject, pointing out the deciding circumstances in both cultures. In Japan, before the solar calendar was introduced the lunar calendar was in use. Under the lunar calendar, the day of the full moon was considered as the first day of the month and the full moon fell on the fifteenth of January and hence the New Year festival takes place on the fifteenth. With the adoption of the solar calendar, the official observance of New Year’s Day was shifted to the 1st of January. However, since Japan is an agricultural society, the practice of celebrating on the day of the first full moon was continued. This day was called Koshōgatsu (Little New Year’s Celebration) in order to distinguish it from the globally recognized January 1rst. Even after the introduction of the solar calendar, the Tamils have been following a calendar in which the full moon is counted as the first day of the month. Therefore, the fifteenth day of the first lunar month is the first day of the Tamil month called Thai. The Tamils celebrate Pońkal i.e. making a kind of gruel with rice, milk, sugar and red grams. Since it is celebrated on the month of Thai, it is called Thaipońkal. In Japan too the
Japanese prepare Ponkal and celebrate on January 15th. During the olden days, the day before Thaipońkal, Tamils would burn old objects, clothes and withered fences of the cattle shed. This had been taking place in Japan as well. The Japanese called it “Tondoyakki”. Tondo means ‘old’ and yakki means ‘burning’ and it was also held on the 14th of January. In Japan, holy ropes of straw are used to demarcate sacred space, which forms part of the decoration. Holy leaves are hung on those straw ropes. During Thaipońkal festival the pońkal celebration would usually take place either in front of the house or on the temple premises. Mango leaves are hung from a rope which demarcates a sacred area where pońkal celebration is held. This kind of decoration, is common in Sri Lanka, Tamilnadu, Thailand, Southern China and Japan. Annapoorani Passage from Valvetithurai to Massachusetts(USA) 1938
Christened as “Annapoorani Ammal”, the sail ship lovingly known as Annapoorani was built by Mr. Sunthara Mesthri in the coastal town of Velvettithurai, Sri Lanka in the year 1930. This magnificent ship was built using Ghond Gum trees, also known as Neem tree grown in the locality of the town. Purchased by a fellow Shipman, an American by the name of Sir William Albert Robinson in January of 1937, “Annapoorani Ammal” was renamed “Florance C. Robinson”, after Sir Robinson’s beloved wife. Annapoorani, built in a South East Asian country, completely dependant on wind & boatmanship skills, made its historic maiden voyage across the European Continent, along the Atlantic ocean sailing thousands of miles to finally anchor & make port in the harbour of Gloucester, Massachusetts on August 1st 1938. The success of this triumphant historical voyage was due to the excellent seamanship of Captain “Thandayal” Kanagaratnam Thambipillai, along with five of his fellow sailors from the town of Velvettithurai.
to the survival of this beautiful Sail Ship along rough seas making it the only World renowned historic voyage of a sail ship from a South East Asian Country at the time. The following photograph was taken in the Atlantic waters close to Baltimore Harbour near the State Capital Washington D.C., USA. Plainly portraying the ships Double sails all spread out in full, showing off its majestic strive.
Unique skills in engineering & craftsmanship in building with the use of Ghond Gum Trees, along with strategically placed sails by the ship builders of Velvattithurai, attributed
Thamil Nee Pon Sivakumar
Since its successful travels around the Indian, Atlantic & Pacific Oceans, this world traveled sail ship is the pride of Eelam Tamils. The unique craftsmanship & engineering of Annapoorani was used as blue print to build more than 200 ships in the USA, making them stronger, and sturdier to withstand rough waters during World War II. Earning recognition to the ship builders & sailors of Tamil Eelam not only in our neighboring countries but also in Europe & the United States of America.

Arts and entertainment in India have a rich and ancient history. Of the arts, Indian Classical dances are a prominent feature, which are deeply related to Indian culture and religion. There are seven forms of traditional Indian Classical dances: Bharathanatyam, Kuchipidi, Kathakali, Mohiniattam, Odissi, Manipuri, and Kathak. Each of these dance forms are distinct and unique in their own ways. Bharathanatyam originated from Tamil Nadu of Southern India. Which interprets life, communicates feelings, and delianates the essence of ‘bhava’ (facial expression), through settle eye movements and hand gestures. This visual poetry, enhanced by the ‘raga’ (melody of soulful music) comes to full vibrance with intense footwork and explosive rhythm – ‘thala’. It is these qualities of Bharathanatyam which make it the highest from of yoga, that integrates mind, body, and spirit. Kathakali and Mohini Attam which developed in Kerala , South India. Kathakali literally means story-play and is an elaborate dance depicting the victory of truth over falsehood. A Striking feature of Kathakali is the use of elaborate makeup and colourful costumes. The theme of Mohini attam dance is love and devotion to god. Vishnu or Krishna is most often the hero. The spectators can feel His invisible presence when the heroine or her maid details dreams and

ambitions through circular movements, delicate footsteps and subtle expressions. Through slow and medium tempos, the dancer is able to find adequate space for improvisations and suggestive ‘bhavas’ or emotions. Kuchipidi which derived from Andhra Pradesh. The dance drama that stil exists today and can most closely be associated with the Sanskrit theatrical tradition is Kuchipudi which is also known as Bhagavata Mela Natakam. The actors sing and dance, and the style is a blend of folk and classical. Arguably this is why this technique has greater freedom and fluidity than other dance styles. Orissa which derived from Orissa, is based on the popular devotion to Lord Krishna and the verses of the Sanskrit play Geet Govinda are used to depict the love and devotion to God. The Odissi dancers use their head, bust and torso in soft flowing movements to express specific moods and emotions. Manipuri hails from Manipur This dance style was originally called jogai which means circular movement. In ancient texts it has been compared to the movement of the planets around the sun. Kathak hailing from Uttar Pradhes, is a north Indian dance form is inextricably bound with classical Hindustani music, and the rhythmic nimbleness of the feet is accompanied by the table or pakhawaj. Traditionally the stories were of Radha and Krishna, in the Natwari style (as it was then called) but the Moghul invasion of North India had a serious impact on the dance. The dance was taken to Muslim courts and thus it became more entertaining and less religious in content. More emphasis was laid on nritta, the pure dance aspect and less on abhinaya (expression and emotion).

Yalini Rajakulasingam Yalini Rajakulasingam has been training under Nritya Choodamani Narthaki Nataraj since 2008. Narthaki Nataraj is a renowned dancer, whose main mission is to preserve the beauty of the Thanjavur Quartet. She is the direct disciple of Late Guru Kittappa Pillai who was the torch bearer of the Thanjavur Quartet. The Thanjavur Quartet lived during the 19th century and have made many contributions to Bharathanatyam and Carnatic music. The Thanjavur Quartet comprised of four brothers; Ponniah, Chinniah, Sivanadanam and Vadivelu. They were born into a choreographer and composer family and were educated in
Shobi Ruban I am a dancer learning Bharatanatyam for the past 17 years. I am a disciple of Shanta Ponnudurai & Shanthi Ruban in Toronto and currently receiving advanced training from Sheejith Krishna & Manjari Chandrasekhar in Chennai. The past 7 years I have been travelling to Chennai to enhance my experience in Bharatanatyam. Dancing & receiving training in India has increased my motivation to dance and has always made me feel blessed. Since the age of 4, I was nurtured in the Kalakshetra Bani of bharatanatyam from both my mom, and my mom’s guru. Therefore, when I was brought to Chennai, I truly did not find any differences in the teaching and learning aspect. But in general what I was able to differ were the mindsets of Canadian dancers & Indian dancers. In Toronto, as soon as one completes their arangetram, they are known to have completed dance, does not need to be under the guidance of gurus and can now be teachers. But according to bharatanatya dancers in India, this
100
is not their interpretation towards the art and arangetrams. As my guru Sheejith Krishna always says, “Art will blossom in every child and every student who aims to be humble, who strives to be good and who loves humanity.” Being a dancer and a student, I strongly believe & agree on my guru’s words and that there is no end to any art form. Apart from obtaining advanced training, I got a chance to work with other renowned dancers/choreographers like Prof. CV Chandrasekhar ,Narthaki Natraj, Jayanthy Subramaniam & Anita Guha for a Mahabharata Production which was a total new experience for me, since as Canadian born dancers we are not exposed to group productions. Working for other choreographers gave me an opportunity to explore different Bani (styles) like Thanjavoor, vazhavoor, etc. The culture, respect, importance and interpretation that the society in India portrays towards bharatanatyam are my main motive behind my interest to pursue training in India.
music by the great Muthuswami Dikshitar. In Bharathanatyam, they organised all the basic Bharathanatyam movements of pure dance into groupings called Adavus. They also composed new music specifically for Bharatnatyam and introduced a different sequence of items that brought out the various aspects of dance and music. In addition, they created the margam format for an arangetram, outlining which dance items would be appropriate for a repertoire. The style itself is known for having powerful, mathematically and geometrically precise footwork and emotionally complex exploration of the many facets of Shringaram.
Bhavajan Kumar Bhavajan Kumar is recognized as one of the youngest upcoming male dancers in the discipline of Bharatanatyam. Bragha Bessell. Young Bhavajan imbibes the best of his gurus distinctive styles. He was the first Canadian born male dancer to receive the “Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai Endowment” from the Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana and has also received the “Pandit Durga Lal Endowment” from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, along with the “Yuva Kala Bharathi” from Bharath Kalachar. He considers
it a blessing to have worked and performed with stalwarts and legendary performers of our era, such as “Padmabushan” Dr. Padma Subramanyam, “Padmashree” Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy, “Padmashree” Smt. Anitha Guha to name a few. Having given scores of solo and group performances at premier Dance celebrations, and many prestigious platforms in India such as The Music Academy Madras, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Narada Gana Sabha, Bramha Gana Sabha, Thyaga Bramha Gana Sabha, Bharath Kalachar, and many more, He has also performed and toured extensively in India, Canada, the U.S.A, and Europe.

Former schoolmates and passionate foodies, Thaves Ponnampalam and Ara Ehamparam, conceived the idea for their unique business concept, Menyou, upon realizing an opportunity to bridge the gap between consumer dining experience at restaurants and the real-time technology that has touched so many other aspects of modern life. Menyou is an interactive iPad menu application that provides customers with a way to order food in restaurants by tablet device. For diners, this means an enhanced, positive experience while dining out; for restaurant owners, this means increased revenue, efficiency in the ordering process and key analytics capabilities that could streamline operations and future marketing efforts.
106
Menyou, founded in 2012, currently has four employees and Co-Founders, Thaves and Ara, are laser-focused on growing its footprint and acquiring new partners in the restaurant industry, with a hope that they can eventually expand into the hospitality industry. A current pilot with a popular Canadian restaurant chain has provided valuable key learnings and opportunities to refine Menyou’s value proposition as they look to acquire more clients. They are also leveraging a newly-minted partnership with restaurant news site, Dine.TO, to raise awareness of Menyou and eventually become a functional feature in popular restaurants across the country.

CABLE SHOPPE Inc.
Stan Muthulingam established CSI (The CableShoppe Inc.) in 1991 with only four (4) employees. After just few years in operations, CSI became a leading industry player in North America. Stan developed CSI’s High Volume customer premises equipment validation system. This system is a rigorous set of tests done on large quantities of devises simultaneously to ensure their functionality in a field-like environment. The system ensures that each devise is capable of transferring multiple pieces of data at appropriate speeds under noise and other conditions similar to those found in many customers’ homes. These tests are available on a wide variety of standards-based technologies from DOCSIS, DSL, WiFi, 3G, WiMAX and LTE compatible products. Since devises are tested in large batches, vast quantities can be validated within a short period of time in most cost effective, with high quality and shorter turnaround time. Moreover, Stan developed CSI’s capability to establish forward reversed logistics, and upgrade all types of core and edge equipment services, including products used for satellite, DSL and cable systems, routers, fibre optic transmitters and receivers, digital controllers and more. CSI’s specialized knowledge of these HighTech equipment allow configuration and troubleshooting services to be offered for a variety of manufacturers including, but not limited to, Telecoms industries.
As the technology advances exponentially, Stan considers embarking on an OTT (Overthe-top) technology as one of its current initiatives. OTT refers to the delivery of video and audio services without a multiple system operator being involved in the control or distribution of the content itself. The provider may be aware of the contents of the IP packets but is not responsible for, nor able to control the viewing abilities, copyrights, and/or redistribution of the content. This technology complements well with the kind of business that CSI currently has. Also, Stan is now working on establishing a Cloud Data Center. He envisions to provide the following major computing services to his clients: Software as a service, Platform as a service, and Infrastructure as a service. Stan believes that creating the optimal compute solution for one’s business is necessary as every business has unique IT requirements hence CSI hopes to provide a wide portfolio of hosted solutions all backed by support 24x7x365. To date, CSI has over 150 professional and highly skilled executives and employees, over 100,000 sq. ft. facility in the Greater Toronto Area. CSI is a certified ISO 9001:2008 + TL 9000 company and still continue to excel and grow into an organization that is constantly looking to the horizon for opportunities and growth. No doubt, CSI has contributed a lot to Canada.

ARANGAADAL Manaveli – Arangadal The long-drawn ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka has produced more than half a million Tamil refugees, and about 300,000 of them have sought refuge in Canada. Among those who were forced to leave their country of birth were numerous writers, poets, playwrights and artists. A longing for serious plays and dramas that stimulate a serious cultural awareness and debate, rather than the superficial feelings that the cheap cinema-based culture creates/awakens, brought a group of exiled Tamil artists together in 1996 and the Manaveli Performing Arts Group was born. The artists of the group are aware that they have a significant role to play in multicultural Canada. The Manaveli Performing Group is in a unique position because it can blend the rich Tamil cultural, artistic and performing traditions to that of the Canadian. Moreover, they have undergone a plethora of experiences such as loss of one’s own
118
country, the village or urban settings that one learned to cherish, loss of loved ones to the war, the passion one feels about justice after having witnessed so much inhumanity and injustice, and the trials and tribulations in the new country of refuge. Manaveli’s audience comes mainly from the 300,000 strong Tamil community in Toronto. The performances are mainly in Tamil language. Manaveli’s work has been hailed as path breaking by critics in Toronto, Europe and Sri Lanka. Manaveli’s 16th Annual Drama festival that took place on Oct 13, 2013 began with a brief talk by a veteran artist K.S Balachandran followed by four plays namely Atheetha’s ‘Athivarnam Karuppu’, T. Ahilan’s ‘Irulilum Thodarum Nizhal’ directed by A. Puranthakan, Cheziyan’s ‘Kadalillirunthu Kaiyalavu Meham’ directed by K. Navam and Melinchimuththan’s ‘Mandaikkayiru.’

Carnatic Society of Canada
The Carnatic Youth Society of Canada was conceived with the purpose of providing the youth in Canada an opportunity to prove themselves as talented Carnatic musicians. Canada is filled with many talented youth who are proficient in Carnatic music but are not given the opportunity to showcase their skills due to a myriad of factors. The CYSC endeavours to not only give a platform to perform, but opportunities to further hone their skills in workshops and provide opportunities to listen to veteran musicians of the field. Our vision for the future sees Canada as a hub for the art with homegrown artists who are performing at an elite level.
