Students, journalists must be diligent navigating the news
Jan. 20 marked the beginning of Donald Trump’s second presidential term. While the outcome of this administration is uncertain, the way news and social media manipulated and skewed the public’s understanding of the election is clear.
The strained relationship between the media and the public was discussed earlier this month at The Westport Library, when a panel of distinguished journalists and U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut addressed the mistrust in media and how many voters felt the bias in the news misled them on what to expect in the most recent election. The Board agrees and given the increased bias in news sources and the spread of misinformation, we advocate for everyone to take steps to strengthen their media literacy practices.
In this constantly changing media landscape, news consumers must take on greater responsibility. It is essential for us to broaden our perspectives, seek news from varied sources and break out of our insulated media bubbles by questioning everything. This is more important now than ever. AI-generated deep fakes are becoming more prevalent and believable, and Meta platforms are no longer using fact-checking programs and are instead adopting X’s “community notes” method. Because of these developments, it will only get easier for misinformation to spread. Making deliberate efforts to diversify the media we consume will help mitigate these risks. Therefore, the Board encourages students to view articles, videos, TV shows, podcasts and social media posts
from a variety of news sources and then question most sources.
In 10 years, where will you get your news? Will you question TikTok or Instagram posts by following up with credible sources? How will you determine a source’s credibility?
How you answer those questions will determine whether we still have a free and independent press in the future. Afterall, journalism is a business, and they have a product they need to sell. In order to make money, news outlets need our clicks, likes and readership. That means we actually hold the greatest power to change future media coverage, because we are the ones who choose what to click.
While mistrust in the news is fueled by the biases major news companies have, recent changes in journalism have further elevated this problem. One major shift is the rise of social media’s influence. As more people turn to social media for news, dangers emerge. In order to capture short attention spans, platforms emphasize soundbites, short snappy quotes taken out of context, which then fuels hy per-partisanship. Addition ally, social media algorithms reinforce personal biases, cre ating echo chambers that limit exposure to alternative perspectives. The Board observed this with their own social media feeds and recognized the dan ger that it poses to our ability to consume unbiased content.

Our clicks influence how news companies allocate resources, so, if we want news outlets to do better, we, as the consumers, need to hold them to it. The future integrity and accuracy of journalism is literally directed by the clicks of our fingertips, and so we must recognize how we contribute to the problems and take responsibility. It is up to us to preserve truth in this ever increasingly biased and rapidly chang-

Creating a shining future through New Year's resolutions
Cohen ʼ25 Paper Editor
One of my favorite things in the world is to see progress within myself, whether in the gym or at school. This makes coming up with my New Year's resolutions the best part of the year. At the end of every year, I make a list of things that I want to change in my life.
For example, last year I made the resolution to truly focus on myself and not worry about other people. Every day since then, I have made a conscious effort to not let others get in the way of me being my true, authentic self.
I have so many things I want to change about my lifestyle in 2025. I want to go on more walks, reach out to more people and try new things.
But a problem with resolutions is that many people try to make unrealistic life changes which lead to them giving up and not completing them. In fact, recent research by Lexipol has shown that only 4 opinions
9% of Americans actually keep their resolutions throughout the year.
I think a realistic New Year's resolution is different and will lead to a likely chance to follow through with it.
So, just make an attainable New Year's resolution. It feels amazing to make even a

100 FIRST DAYS

Donald
Trump has returned to the White House, and has brought with him a long checklist. He has also ushered in a “government trifecta,” meaning that the House of Representatives, the Senate and the Executive Office are all controlled by one republican party. Government trifectas tend to last in two year periods, the last one being Democratic from 2021-23.
This particular transition is unique, as Trump is serving a non-sequential second term in office, something not accomplished since president Grover Cleveland in 1893. This occasion gives him the chance to build on legislation he started in his first term while simultaneously nullifying much of the Biden administration’s work.
Jan. 20 to April 30 of 2025 will mark Trump’s first 100 days in office. During that period of time in his first presidential term in 2017, he worked to repeal the Affordable Care Act (or Obamacare), an act that increases health insurance coverage for the uninsured. Trump also signed travel and immigration bans and travel restrictions to several Muslim countries and advocated for the immediate construction of a physical wall on the US-Mexico border.
Inklinations

Trump promised to make the “Trump tax cuts” the biggest in history, citing his plans to reduce the corporate tax rate from 21% to 15% (if the company is US based), ending taxes on overtime pay, and ending taxes on tips.

Trump proposed a government efficiency commission, which would be led by Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla. The commission would look to make cuts in the Department of Education (DOE). Trump campaigned on “[putting] parents back in charge” and offered the first pick of funding to schools that abolished tenures (a policy that protects teachers from being fired without cause) for K-12 teachers, or cut administrators focused on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. He has also discussed on X the idea of shutting down the DOE altogether.
Trump has said he will “revoke every Biden policy promoting the chemical castration and sexual mutilation of our youth,” in reference to gender affirming care. Ryan Thoreson, a specialist in LGBTQ+ rights at Human Rights Watch wrote that Trump will continue to weaken protections of LGBTQ+ rights, particularly for transgender Americans.

“
It would be better if we had local and state governments dictating what the Department of Education is, because in that case it’s more democratic, and elections are closer to the people; they decide what their education is.”

What do you think about Trump saying he would get rid of the DOE?

“ It sounds harmful to the upcoming generations who will have to deal with the consequences. I believe that it will cause more harm than good."

One of the most major foreign policy changes Trump is proposing is in regards to tariffs, such as a tariff upward of 60% on Chinese imports. He also plans on establishing a policy of reciprocating tariffs; if any nation were to impose tariffs on the US, the US would reciprocate.
In regard to subjects such as the US-Mexico border, Trump said at a Nevada rally that “massive portions of federal law enforcement” would be shifted to the border. Immigration restriction has been a fundamental part of his platform for his reelection campaign. He vowed during his speech at the Republican National Convention to not allow “killers and criminals” across the border. Trump has called his plans for the border the “largest domestic deportation operation in American history.”

He also plans to cut back on many of Biden’s climate initiatives, and instead increase domestic production of fossil fuels by ending delays in federal drilling permits and leases, while removing limits on American natural gas exports. He has expressed disdain for alternative energy sources such as wind turbines as well, saying in a post on Truth Social that the U.K. was making a “very big mistake” by utilizing the in the North Sea.
“
I think the Department of Education is inefficient, [and] I also believe the federal government has no place controlling our education. There are ways to alter the system that would make it more efficient, but a shutdown may be the most practical at this point in time.”

“
I don’t think he should. The BOE is important for students to benefit in their education and learn well."

Enhancing MINDS or MISCONDUCT?

AI Invades Staples: Is it a friend or a foe in the classroom?
Caroline Zajac ʼ25

Olivia Saw ʼ26 Assistant

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken Staples by storm since 2022 when the platform ChatGPT launched. Tools like ChatGPT have rapidly become part of academic routines. Students use AI to brainstorm writing ideas, summarize lengthy texts or even draft college essays. AI has continuously proven to be a reliable source for shaving time off busy schedules.
“I don’t think ChatGPT is a bad thing,” Sophie Cochran ’25 said. “I use it to help me get ideas for certain writing prompts. It helps when I have brain fog. I’m not using it irresponsibly.”
But teachers and administrators at Staples are addressing the use of AI as an issue. Students face plagiarism consequences, and use is considered a violation of academic honesty. If students are caught using AI on assignments, they will receive an email sent home, a potential zero on the assignment
and put on academic probation.
“I think the important thing is that students realize that they need permission from the teacher to use generative AI for completing their assignments,” social studies coordinator Lauren Francese said. “These tools are taking away important parts of the learning experience, like generating ideas, imagining different possibilities and producing written work as a process for thinking.”
“ I don’t think teachers can stop kids from using AI
"
- Brooke Lawrence '25
With the rise of AI, the question arises: Should AI be banned in schools, or is there a way to embrace it ethically? Universities around the country argue that it violates their plagiarism rule, believing it only enhances dishonesty. For example, the University of Michigan has completely banned the use of AI, including ChatGPT, in the application process.
However, there is a growing shift in perspectives. UCLA, for example, opted out of TurnItIn’s AI Writing Detection “Preview” Feature; UCLA is also imple-
menting ChatGPT Enterprise in research studies, because there is a recognition that AI can enhance learning when used responsibly.
“AI is changing so fast and it’s so new, that teachers need to get educated before we can decipher what a responsible use of AI looks like,” English teacher Jesse Bauks said. “During professional development days we need to have instruction on AI.”
The use of ChatGPT has skyrocketed, for example the chief of OpenAI said ChatGPT currently has over 180.5 million users and openai.com receives approximately 1.6 billion visits per month
“I don’t think teachers can stop kids from using AI,” Brooke Lawrence ’25 said. “It’s grown too big for the administration to contain. It’s about teaching kids to use it morally.”
STAPLES OPINIONS
88.6%
SAY THAT AI SHOULD NOT BE BANNED ENTIRELY FOR USE ON SCHOOL WORK OF 281 STUDENTS AND TEACHERS

Catherine Campagnino ʼ26 Paper Editor
The first words that might come to mind when someone mentions Artificial Intelligence (AI) are probably “cheating” and “forgery.” But the truth is, the ethicality of using AI is much more complex. In fact, there have been several programs developed using AI that have expanded the possibilities for legitimately using AI in order to help students actually learn.
AI applications for students with disabilities bridge learning gaps STAPLES OPINIONS
For example, some students have dyslexia or other learning challenges that prevent them from absorbing long text. Notebook LM takes long texts and presents it in podcast form so users can listen.
“It has opened up more possibilities for students,” Staples’ Occupational Therapist Claire Nicklas said. “There is a whole variety of different treatment ideas and different ideas for sessions to help students with certain problems.”
Programs such as Gemini AI allow students to put writing prompts into AI, allowing students to be more independent and approach tasks in different ways.

Due to recent plagiarism issues involving students using AI to write their papers, Staples' AI policy has been under review in the last couple months, with the administration even considering an AI ban. This raises the question of whether or not there are any learning possibilities that can come out of AI or if it is just for plagiarism.
“AI is good when it is used properly,” Jack Srihari ’25 said. “I strongly believe that it shouldn't be used to cheat, and the school, instead of banning AI, should be teaching people how to use it in a manner that can be helpful.”
The Magic School, Notebook LM and Gemini are all AI programs that hold great capacity for helping students to learn.
“Some of the students that I work with have a hard time getting their thoughts from their brain onto a paper,” Staples' speech pathologist Deirdre Flores said. “For example, when a student gets an essay assignment, they could use AI to create an outline instead of waiting for a teacher to provide one. This not only helps them figure out how to organize their ideas but also builds important organization skills and fosters their independence in the learning process.”
AI isn’t only a helpful tool for students who struggle with fine motor skills; AI is also helping kids who are non-verbal as well, by creating a more naturalist sounding voice on their alternative augmentative communication devices. This allows people who are non-verbal to sound more like a person and less like a robot.
who's non verbal the chance to sound much more natural, rather than a robotic voice speaking to you,” Flores said. “Which could change the perception of the person that's talking to them, that you're actually talking to a person rather than like a robot.”
DOES THE USE OF AI TOOLS ENHANCE OR HINDER THE LEARNING PROCESS?

However, the stigmas and legitimate dangers surrounding AI remain. ELA Coordinator Jessica DiBuono believes that it is still important to approach AI cautiously.
“I ask all students to remember that it is never going to be a replacement for their own thoughts,” DiBuono said. “Their ability to critically think is developed through continued practice, and none of us should give up that chance.” features
Always check with your teachers before using AI.

From Laughs to Limits: How a TikTok Ban Could Change Everything
Paper Editor
Ti ikTok was set to go dark in the U.S. on Jan. 19 but returned hours later after President Trump announced plans to pause the ban. But the app is not out of the woods yet. After months of mounting national security concerns, the U.S. government demanded the app’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, transfer o wnership to an American firm—a deal that has still not happened. Now, the app that reshaped social media culture is in limbo, with the Supreme Court ruling that it is Constitutinal to ban the app, and President Trump giving it a stay of sentencing.. In the meantime, many students hope that one of their main means of entertainment, social connection, and global awareness will not be taken away.

Student representatives amplify student voice, but need students to step up
Lily Hultgren ʼ25 Editor-in-Chief
How do we hold students accountable? This was the question that the Board of Education (BOE) faced after fully revising the student Code of Conduct. Initially, the Board wanted to do this by having students read and sign it. However, BOE senior student representative Calum Madigan ’25 feared such a lengthy document would not allow students to actually understand the new policies. Instead he proposed alternatives to make the Code of Conduct more approachable such as creating a summarized version or dedicating time into the health curriculum for students to learn and be assessed on the material.
These are the kinds of suggestions Madigan, and new student representative Souleye Kebe ’26, regularly share at BOE meetings.
While the student representatives have no voting power, they attend every BOE meeting and provide student input regarding issues impacting the schools. However, in order for student voices to be better heard, both Madigan and Kebe want the
student body to also share their feedback with school and district leaders more.
Student opinion is particularly relevant as a recent issue that the Board has been discussing is cell phone usage, a topic that Madigan wants students to pay more attention to.
“I know neighboring towns such as Greenwich have already done a full ban, and I think everyone on the Board is really in support of banning cell phones,” Madigan said. “That's the topic right now that is really floating around. I'm not sure if all students are aware of it.”
Although the student representative position has given students more ability to contribute to discussions surrounding school issues, Kebe believes that there are additional changes that should

be made to improve the student to district administration relationship.
“The primary change I want to see is the school being more receptive to the comments and opinions of students,” Kebe said. “It does appear that many of the efforts made by students and me to enact change at Staples falls on deaf ears or on ineffectual hands. The solution is for students to advocate for themselves more and for faculty to be willing to compromise with us more.”

For students that want to have a say in district issues like the cell phone ban or how the school is run in general, Madigan has recommendations for how to do that.
“One way is they can come to the Student Council meetings and they can express their voices, and then I can share what they're saying to the Board of Ed.,” Madigan said.
The BOE, which consists of seven elected members, meets every other Thursday at 7 p.m. Whether a student attends these meetings or pursues another avenue to get their voice out, Madigan and Kebe are depending on all students to be more proactive and speak up about the changes they want to see in the schools.
“We are the ones who attend Staples,” Kebe said. “Closed mouths don't get fed.”

Overtime. Next goal wins. This pressure fuels her quick action as she anticipates and intercepts the opponent’s pass. Sweat dripping, she dribbles the ball 45 yards, feeling the Darien defender right on her tail. Time ticks down. She pushes the ball out of the defender's reach and in a split second decision strikes it, losing sight of its destined path. Bang. The sound of the ball hitting the backboard in the net gives way to eruptions of cheers from the stadium and bench. This was the final goal in the field hockey Fairfield County Interscholastic Conference (FCIAC) 2024 Championship, scored by Staples midfielder Sofia Fidalgo Schioppa ’25. The team went on to claim the State Championship, capping off a stellar season. Beyond Staples, Fidalgo Schioppa continues to shine in club play. She competed with the U16 U.S. National Team for two years before playing with the U18 team last year. She is now one of just five players from her former team selected to try out for the U21 team this year. Fidalgo Schioppa is no stranger to high-level play.

“The pace of play is a lot faster as the competition gets stronger and stronger,” Fidalgo Schioppa said. “I just love being able to challenge myself everyday with these players and new coaches. It allows me to get better each time that I’m with them, gaining more experience and feedback.”

The competitive National selection process is through USA Field Hockey. Players start at a state level, and then go to regional level, then national level, culminating in monthly selection camps in North Carolina. From those, the National team gets developed, which includes around 25 girls. The team has camps every month in the winter and spring, and then goes on a week-long tour to compete with countries like the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Spain.
“You’re basically with the best of the best playing against the best of the best,” Fidalgo Schioppa said.
Playing field hockey since she was eight years old, Fidalgo Schioppa emphasizes her motivation toward constant improvement.
“You just have to be honest with yourself if you really love the sport and if you’re passionate about it,” Fidalgo Schioppa said. “And if you are, then you want to be there at practice and putting in that work, and it’ll just come naturally.”
Fidalgo Schioppa is committed to Princeton University to continue her field hockey journey and leadership.
“Sofi is always very inclusive to team members and knows how to have fun at practice while also staying focused,” Emma Larit ’25, Fidalgo Schioppa’s Staples co-captain, said.
Whatever the future holds, Fidalgo Schioppa remains determined to elevate her game.
“She is one of the most talented players I have had the pleasure to work with,” Abdel Elkettani, one of Fidalgo’s club coaches, said. “Her skill level, vision and game intelligence makes her one of the top players not only in our club, but in the country.”

Varsity sports appoint junior captains
Ava Coyle '25
On The Wreckord Executive Producer
When you think of team captains, you think of seniors who have dedicated three previous years to playing their sport. Yet, Staples sports have found a suprisingly large number of underclassmen who fit this role. One might believe underclassmen would struggle to find their footing as a leader, especially when they share the position with other senior captions. But the underclassmen captains, with the support of their teamates, are ready to prove that assumption wrong.
MASON TOBIAS MARY STEVENS SARAH BOGDAN
Boys’ basketball captain Mason Tobias ’26 hopes to emulate alumni Chris Zajac ’23 and Charlie Honig ’23 as he steps into his new role as captain.
“Those were two of the best captains I’ve ever had,” Tobias said. “I think one of the things they did really well was just make everyone feel like they’re equal and part of the team, so that is something that I want to be like.”
With a season that stretch es from winter to ear ly spring, the team has found it difficult in past years to keep up the same energy. Tobias hopes to do one “simple” thing throughout the season: “Just continuing to bring it everyday.”

In early May, girls’ track and field coach Jesse McCray announced that the team would be able to self-nominate for captain positions. After demonstrating her dedication by consistently attending every practice and meet, Sarah Bogdan ’26 nominated herself and was voted in by her teammates. Bodgan hopes to lead by creating a welcoming environ ment, fostering team connections and ensuring the team feels like a safe space.
“It seems very individual [track & field], but a really big part of it is just com ing together with your teammates and sup porting one another,” Bogdan said. “Because with that sup port you’re able to get farther than you ever thought that you would be able to.”
Mary Stevens ’26 has always enjoyed running but was inspired to follow in her older sister's, Francine Stevens ’23, footsteps by joining the track and field team. Now, as Stevens navigates her junior year, she also navigates being captain of Staples girls’ track and field.
Stevens has found that contrary to what one may believe, she is not
spect and kindness any captain deserves.
“I think that as a junior captain it can be a little scary because you don’t want to overstep, like with the senior captains,” Stevens said. “So, I just want to make sure that everybody feels comfortable

Fashion Forward:
Camille Blundell ’27 Paper Editor
The news is in, and leopard print jeans are not going anywhere. School is hard, but being fashionable isn't. It's time to nd a common ground between looking and feeling your best by mixing in the incoming trends with your everyday look.

Per usual, take this with a grain of salt and wear what you want. What do fashion designers know anyway?

For 2025, we are looking at two di erent but equally cute trends.

First up, introducing, or well, reintroducing the 70’s bohemian look. You heard me right, boho is not only for Coachella. YSL, Valentino and Isabel Marant are channeling a 70’s revival with jewel tones like dark green and mauve. Focus on mixing and matching patterns, making it the perfect excuse to raid your mom or grandma's closet. Grab your dark colored ru e skirts, Levis, long owy tops and brown leather boots. Vogue and Harpers Bazaar predict suede having its comeback, perfect for layering textures as we saw in the Miu Miu, Acne Studios and YSL spring/summer 2025 runways.

Next up: the surge of simplicity, or the “Clean Girl Aesthetic.” e idea of combining classics with a pop of modern street style is making its debut, and the beloved slick backs are sticking around, and coming back even stronger in 2025.

Cosmopolitan highlights a surplus of stripes, seen in runways such as Prada, Louis Vuittiion, Dior and Chanel. Brands like Artizia are leading with the idea of basics being your staple. Grab a pair of blue jeans, stick with neutral colors and don't forget a classic shoe. While the Adidas Sambas have been dominating, the arrival of Nike Cortez, Reeboks and New Balances are sure to follow and contribute to the rise of sporty-chic. e minimalist on-the-go look is an extension of the minimalistic out t, the idea of combining a simple out t with sporty accessories. Miu Miu and Tory Burch debuted these sort of looks on the runway, with collaborations like SKIMS x e North Face to further cement its inevitable rise.

FASHIONABLY IN: Cheetah, stripes and BOHO chic are here to ring in the New Year.

Think slick back buns, gel nail polish, and trendy minimal makeup. The idolized Hailey Bieber, owner of Rhode Beauty, has kickstarted a movement of prioritizing effortless beauty.
A bold and unapologetic confidence catapults this vibe of combining Y2K styles with a maximalist and sassy image.
Endless cool incorporated with a timeless aesthetic. The 90s vibe focuses on iconic staples that simultaneously feel modern and retro.
