... from the Editor My favorite time of year is just around the corner! This issue is always fun to put together due to the many events & bike nights kicking off. While I say fun, I must also say tedious! It is a hard one to compile into one issue because you want to be sure to not leave anyone’s event out. I hope we got it all in here for you guys. This Editor’s Note is going to be short and sweet… .I’m sure you guys will appreciate that! Ha! March and April not only kick off riding season and loads of events to attend. It also kicks off a crazy couple of months for my family. I have both of my daughter’s birthdays, my hubby’s birthday & my anniversary!!! Geez, what was I thinking being so busy in April? Not to mention the fact that I will have a teenager this year! Oh.My. Gosh….Where does time go? This is both scary & exciting to me. Scared that she will act like me & do some of the things that I did way back then. Yet, excited that she is living the very best years of her life & that I get to soak in all these moments with her. So, while you guys are out riding & enjoying this beautiful weather that gets offered to us here in the South, I’ll be planning parties & preparing myself to be the Mom of a teenager! With Bike Nights kicking off & the season of poker runs every Saturday upon us, I want to remind all of you to please drive safe and be sure to not over drink and then make the mistake of hopping on your bike. I feel like this is preached to all of us when it comes to getting behind the wheel, but we sometimes overlook it while on two wheels. At most all of these events that we love to attend, there is always alcohol. While I love a cold beer just as much as the next, I just want to remind you all to think before you drink. We have to drive on the defense most of the time to everyone in a vehicle, so just make sure you are able to keep your reflexes sharp & your chrome shiny side up!!! With that said, go out there this Spring and Have a heck of a time enjoying all the good times that these businesses are working hard to prepare for you. Ride all you can & if you don’t have a bike just yet…well, you have a couple weeks WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?? Being on two wheels with the wind in your face is the best therapy out there and we all need a little therapy now & then. Yell at our crew if you see us out anywhere & be sure to tag us in your photos on social media #inknironmagazine!! Enjoy yourself this Spring & thank you again for making Ink N Iron Magazine your go to source for events! We appreciate ya! Ride Safe & Live it Up, Tonya

The likelihood of a deer-vehicle collision in South Carolina is higher than national average, according to records from the state and automobile insurers. The data shows the likelihood of a vehicle in South Carolina being involved in a deer-vehicle collision over the next 12 months is one out of every 137 drivers. The national average is one in 182. In 2013, four people were killed in vehicle - deer collisions in South Carolina, and three of them were riding motorcycles. Over the years I have received many calls from bikers that were injured in collisions with animals, most of them with deer. Despite a persistent rumor, the state will not compensate anyone for a collision with a deer or other wild animal. The only way to protect yourself for damage to your motorcycle is to make sure to have collision and comprehensive insurance coverage on your bike. The only way to receive any compensation for any injuries is to have medical payments coverage or personal injury protection coverage on your bike. These types of insurance will pay you for property damage and medical expenses in the event of a motorcycle vs. wild animal collision. For more information on these types of insurance coverages, visit our web site at www.ironhorselawsc.com under insurance tips. If you have a passenger on your motorcycle they will have a case against you as the rider and your motorcycle insurance and could receive money for their injuries from your motorcycle insurance. Deer mostly move at night, so ride defensively and reduce speed and use your high beam headlamp at night, on back roads and in areas where you see deer crossing signs or in areas with wildlife habitat. Collisions with farm and domestic animals are a different story. If the owner of the farm animal or dog can be identified, a case can be made against the animal’s owner if they can be identified. In the past two years I have settled cases against a dog owner’s home owners insurance where the dog caused the motorcyclist to wreck. In both cases the rider was attacked or charged by pit bull dogs, resulting in a motorcycle wreck. If you have a collision with a dog or farm animal or are attacked by a dog resulting in a wreck, call police immediately and get any information from the animals collar or tag that could identify the owner. If there is no collar, tag or branding on the animal, ask the officer or animal control to do an investigation to determine ownership of the animal. If you have any questions or have been injured in a motorcycle wreck and would like to speak to me, please call me at 855-IRONLAW. Ride Safe. Ride Free!

ABATE of South Carolina had their annual Lobby Day on January 14,, 2014. Over 200 motorcyclists converged on the State House grounds to voice their opinions regarding statutes that will affect motorcyclists across the state of South Carolina. To start the day the riders met at the Carolina Ale House in Columbia and were treated to a free breakfast provided by All American Heating and Air. During this meal riders watched a slide show outlining the legislation ABATE is focusing on this legislative session. The primary bill that ABATE is pushing this year is H3231. If you are unfamiliar with this bill, it concerns motorcycle parking in parking facilities. As you are probably already aware, motorcycles are currently prohibited from parking in state and city owned garages across South Carolina. If H3231 is passed into law it will become illegal to bar motorcyclists access to the state and city owned facilities. After the breakfast and presentation the riders were provided a free shuttle to the State House where they met with Governor Haley. Once the meeting with Governor Haley had concluded ABATE members roamed the halls speaking with representatives about H3231. These conversations were critical in getting H3231 before the full committee just a few weeks later where it was passed through full committee favorably and sent to the House floor. I cannot convey how very important the member support and their combined efforts were in getting the bill to this critical point. After the legislature convened for their first session of the year, the members were shuttled back to the Carolina Ale House for a lunch provided by Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group. During the course of this lunch we learned that we had accomplished our goal for Lobby Day in gathering massive support for this bill. In closing, if you are not a member of ABATE I would encourage you to consider joining. It is because of this group that we can enjoy many of the freedoms the State of South Carolina provides including: permitting riders without a helmet, reduced taxes on our motorcycles, the opportunity to proceed through a red light after 120 seconds, as well as many others.
