Often over 30% cheaper than our main competitors, see our print comparison chart on page 3 of our new Price Guide. That said, it’s a crazy world out there, and to ensure that we offer you the BEST possible print deals we introduced PRICE CRUSHER. We’ll match or beat any LIKE for LIKE quote you have from another printer, now that’s confidence in our prices. It must be like for like though, after all you wouldn’t expect us to match work printed on our million pound press on environmentally responsible FSC papers against printwork from that wee bloke down the road, would you ?? The Rules Are Thus... We want to make our Price Crusher Guarantee as transparent as possible it’s a genuine offer, and gives you GENUINE savings, but please be aware of the following... We’ll beat any price that you may have from a LOCAL printer (DD postcode) providing this quote is based on LIKE for LIKE printwork. What do we mean “like for like”? - Well, obviously it must be the same technical specification, full colour, same paper etc - but it must also be representative of the high print quality that you will receive from us. This means if wee Jimmy - printing from the garage, offers a quote it’s unlikely to match our high print quality and we’d not consider that “like for like”. Bona-Fide Quote We also have to take into account the “A HOLE” factor, and we all know what that means. If you get a quote for 10,000 Brochures for £40, then clearly this does not reflect a “true market value”, when such quotes are NOT representative of “true market value” then we don’t consider that to be a “bona fide” quote and Price Crusher will NOT be applicable. We’ll determine true market value to be an average of what other comparable printers charge. It’s also worth pointing out that we’ll only offer this on items published in our standard price guide, so that means if you come to us with a quote for 100,000 86 page magazines, well - sorry, but that’s not really our market. Order Placement Once an order has been placed the price is fixed, we are unable to offer any form of price match / Price Crusher AFTER an order has been placed, so it pays to do your homework FIRST. Bottom Line Play fair and take advantage of our GENUINE offer, the worst thing that will happen is that you’ll SAVE money

HOWARD SMITH PAPER GROUP

PEFC/16-33-505

Introduction Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. It was founded in 1993 in response to public concern about deforestation and the demand for a trustworthy wood-labelling scheme. The Trademark of the Forest Stewardship Council (FS C) is a label on timber and wood based products, including paper, which indicates that the wood comes from a well-managed forest. It gives assurance that the forest of origin has been independently inspected and evaluated to comply with an internationally agreed set of strict environmental, social and economic standards. The benefits of FSC labelling The FSC label helps ensure public recognition of your corporate, social and environmental responsibility policies. It provides independent assurance to ‘ethical’ customers that your customers that your product comes from forests managed to the highest social and economic standards. Forest Stewardship Council is supported by high profile organisations including; WWF, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and the Woodland T rust. Forest and Chain of Custody certification Well managed forests are those whose management implements performance standards based on internationally agreed environmental, social and economic requirements. Although many forests are sustainably managed, the only way to provide credible proof of this is through independent verification. Chain of Custody certification is an independent assessment, by a qualified and accredited expert, who verifies systems are in place to trace the flow of wood containing products back to the certified forest. Corporate Social Responsibility Corporate Social Responsibility, often referred to as simply Corporate Responsibility, is a concept whereby organisations consider and take responsibility for the impact of their activities on customer, suppliers, employees, shareholders, commu nities and other stakeholders, as well as the environment. This commitment is seen to extend beyond the statutory obligation to comply with legislation, and sees organisations voluntarily taking further steps of continual improvement. CSR strategies are not prescriptive in what they should cover, but fundamental elements normally focus on; • Health and Safety • Supply Chain Stewardship – ethical procurement • Operational environmental impacts • Social responsibilities for both internal staff and externally for the wider community incorporating charitable support • Business sustainability programmes • Resource efficiencies.

Business benefits of using FSC Certified Paper For most corporate organisations procurement and sourcing policies are now included as a fundamental element of their CSR strategy. This imp acts on their use and choice of paper and print. For paper, commonly products either from a s ustainable certified source, like FSC or PEFC or alternatively paper with a recycled content are specified. Product Labelling The FSC logo is used to indicate that the material has Chain of Custody and comes from a certified source. ENVIRONMENT INFORMATION SHEET Programme for the endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)

Introduction Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is an independent, non-profit, nongovernmental organisation, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainable managed forestsough thr independent third party certification. PEFC is a global umbrella organisation that acknowledges and endorses different national forest certification schemes (e.g. the national scheme in Finland is endorsed by the PEFC). These national schemes build upon the inter-governmental processes for the promotion of sustainable forest management, a series of on-going mechanisms supported by 149 governments in the world covering 85% of the world's forest area. Organisations who are PEFC certified provide an auditable chain of custody which assures customers they are buying wood and paper products that originate from sustainable managed forests. The Howard Smith Paper Group first achieved its PEF C Chain-of-Custody supplier certification in 2007. Certificate number SGS-PEFC/COC-0180 Forest and Chain-of-Custody certification Sustainable managed forests are those whose management implements performance standards based on internationally agreed environmental, social and economic requirements. Although many forests are sustainably managed, the only way to provide credible proof of this is through independent verification. Chain of Custody certification is an independent assessment, by a qualified and accredited expert, who verifies systems are in place to trace the flow of wood containing products back to the certified forest. Why should I have PEFC certification By using PEFC labelled products, you can be assured of gaining public recognition of your environmental and Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR). You can provide independent assurance to customers wishing to buy ethical products that, the forest of origin are managed to the highest social and environmental standards. Increasingly organisations are realising this as an opportunity to grow their business and secure work from organisations who have committed CSR policies. Product labelling The PEFC logo can be used to indicate that the material has chain of custody and comes from a certified source. The PEFC logo can be used optionally on or off product (e.g. invoices etc) . under license from the PEFC-Council, only by those who have a valid forest management certificate or a chain of custody certificate to communicate to customers

How to become PEFC Certified Achieving chain of custody is possible for most organisations with some resource investment. The scale and cost of this investment is reflected on the size and complexity of the business and whether any other quality management schemes, such as ISO14001 or ISO 9001, are already in place. The Howard Smith Paper Group has developed with a p artner organisation, The Print Circle, a web based tool for printers, designers and publishers to understand the process and opportunities of becoming both PEFC and FSC certified. Importantly, this is a competitive and simple solution. Equally important, having made the investment and securing PEFC certification, this tool then helps you remain compliant. We have a detailed information sheet which explains the process and guidance on cost. This can be downloaded from www.fscpaper.co.uk/getfsc What PEFC papers are available The Howard Smith Paper Group have a comprehensive r ange of both PEFC and FSC certified products suitable for most print applications. By becoming certied, foresters, pulp producers, paper mills, merchants, printers, publishers, creative agencies and members of the wider business community alike can demonstrate their commitment to the environmental, social and economical concerns of their stakeholders. And through their participation, they can encourage their suppliers to follow their lead. It provides independent assurance to everyone, throughout the Chain of Custody and beyond, that the forests of origin are proven to the very highest social and environmental standards.

Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certif cation Schemes (PEFC) The PEFC is an independent, non-prot, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999. It promotes sustainable managed forests through independent third-party certication, which assures customers they are buying wood and paper products that promote the sustainable management of forests. PEFC is a global umbrella organisation that assesses and recognises individual national forest certi cation schemes developed in a multi-stakeholder process.

Forests in the EU cover 38% of the total land area and have increased signif cantly over the past 50 years. Today the annual increase of forest cover in Europe is 6,450 km 2 (the size of greater London), equivalent of 4,363 football pitches each day.

Pulp producers themselves must be independently audited to then sell on certied pulp. It provides the guarantee that the tree was sourced from a well managed forest.

In excess of 310 million hectares, 21% of world’s productive forests, are either FSC or PEFC certif ed.

For most organisations today Corporate Responsibility and sustainable procurement is essential. By using Chain of Custody material, printers can add real value to their clients.

Increasingly printers have realised the growing needs of their customers to minimise their environmental impacts and to help promote their commitment. Using the respective FSC or PEFC Chain of Custody logos provides complete assurance that the material originates from a well managed forest. Importantly it also communicates this message to the consumer or recipient of any printed item.

The printer

By working together and becoming part of the Chain of Custody, you could be at the forefront, championing better corporate and social responsibility, not only for the future of the environment but also for the people like you and industries like yours which depend on the widespread and ongoing availability of timber and paper.

Understanding the importance of the environment, and sustainable procurement, Howard Smith Paper Group has developed a comprehensive range of certied products that minimise environmental impacts. They now supply the complete range of paper and boards to the print, design, retail, publishing and business communities. With in excess of 90% of their stock now certied or recycled, Howard Smith Paper Group has a range of environmental papers for every application.

The merchant’s role is to full customer needs and is key to the ow and availability of certied products. Internationally recognised, Howard Smith Paper Group is focused on delivering value to its customers through its products, service and solutions.

Starting with a simple tree, the Chain of Custody has the potential to change the way people across the world supply and use paper products. And, as is nature’s way, the Chain of Custody comes full circle, so what is sown, whether it be a seed or a thought, will regenerate and grow.

Jonathan Porritt - Chairman UK Sustainability Development Commission.

“There aren’t many industries around that can aspire to becoming genuinely sustainable. The paper industry, however, is one of them; it is inherently sustainable.”

Chain of Custody carefully documents the successive changes in ownership and appearance of the material. A key element for the mill is balancing the volume of pulp in, to nished material out, taking in to account waste through the whole process.

Understanding the paper manufacturer’s core raw material is pulp, from trees, it is no surprise of their increasing demand of a sustainable supply chain and for pulp from a certied source.

The rst step in the chain, from the forest, is the pulp producer who are under high level scrutiny they do not receive illegally logged timber. The most comprehensive security comes through using Chain of Custody timber from a certied well managed forest.

From paper to tree - Chain of Custody

Increasingly foresters realise the long term necessity for sustainable forest management. Guardians of this resource they are able to manage and regenerate woodland and meet biodiversity and ecological needs, whilst at the same time fullling the escalating demand for certied products.

The forest is a complex natural community where trees, plants, animals and people live in delicate balance. From the moment that a seed takes root and begins to germinate, it supports a multitude of existences and livelihoods, none more so than those associated with the paper industry. Yet still, every year uncontrolled logging occurs destroying a vital natural resource.

Today, more and more designers, agencies and print managers are recommending ranges from the ever-increasing number of certied stocks carrying Chain of Custody logos. It not only demonstrates commitment to minimising the client’s environmental impact, the socially responsible sourcing and use of natural resources, it also makes perfect marketing and economic sense without any compromise to prot or quality.

In an increasingly environmentally aware and stakeholder-conscious business world, the creative industry is tasked with portraying client credibility in a positive light in all areas of its policy and strategy, particularly when it comes to the use of paper.

The designer, agency & print manager

As an intensive purchaser of paper products, the publisher is ideally placed to lead the way in the future of publishing. By changing its purchasing policy and printing its books, magazines and newspapers on certied paper, it not only enhances the company’s production and environmental credentials but also inuences its suppliers to do likewise.

With a number of global publishing houses using certied material, it’s clear that Chain of Custody material is having a profound inuence. By balancing prot with the environmental concerns of its readers, stakeholders, the industry and wider public, recognition and approval often lead to an increase in sales.

The publisher

Annual reviews, brochures, reports, strategy documents, even the simple memo – they all use paper. What better way for a business to show its commitment to the sustainability of natural resources than showing employees, stakeholders, customers and the general public that they can trace every sheet of paper back to its roots – literally.

Corporate & Social Responsibility policies are now a fundamental part of a company’s business strategy – corpor ate governance, health and safety, diversity and opportunity – but an increasing number of business leaders are concerned about their company’s impact on the environment and in particular, their use of paper products.

The corporate customer

From the forester to the executive board, we all have a responsibility to protect and sustain the natural environment and the power to inuence the way in which our forests are managed and our paper-based products are supplied. Chain of Custody ensures wood based products, including paper, comes from sustainable managed woodlands around the world through the supply chain to the end-user.

From forest to end user, Chain of Custody provides traceability of a printed publication (wood containing products) back to a w ell managed forest source.

Chain of Custody

As environmental concerns have increased, two main auditable processes have emerged to ensure that tree pulp is harvested in ways that avoid negative environmental impacts. These are the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certif cation Schemes (PEFC).

Of course, the main constituent of paper is trees: a naturally regenerating and carbon neutral source. There are rightly concerns about how we manage our consumption of paper but, managed responsibly, communicating in print need not cost the earth.

The written word is surely the most versatile and effective means of communication ever devised. From newspapers, magazines and books to packaging, paper and print, they offer a unique, powerful and controllable vehicle in which to project your message.

PEFC/16-33-505

There is growing recognition, supported by most life-cycle analysis, that the worst way to dispose of paper is to bury it whilst the best way is to recycle it. The good news is that paper can be easily recycled to a reusable quality five or six times. At present, every year in the UK, we consume over 12 million tonnes of paper and board. Approximately 7.8 million tonnes of this is recovered for recycling, of which circa 4 million is re-manufactured here in the UK predominantly into newsprint, tissue and packaging products. The balance is exported to other world markets, the majority to the Far East. Traditionally, papers with a high recycled content were regarded as down-shade and poor in performance when compared to virgin fibre grades. However, these myths can be openly challenged. Today’s recycled alternatives are equal in quality, performance and reliability. “We’ve selected high-quality recycled products that won’t just promote sustainability but will also positively reinforce Ocado’s brand value”. Jodie Macklin Marketing Publications Manager, Ocado Environmental benefits of recycled papers The arguments for recycling paper and board, and for organisations to buy more recycled paper appear compelling. However a recurring theme in the debate that surround waste and resource management is the extent to which the recycling of materials offers genuine benefit to the environment.

The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), a not-for-profit government funded organisation, commissioned a major international research project from the Technical University of Denmark (IPU) and the Danish Topic Centre on Waste. Reviewing existing Life Cycle Analysis it concluded the following derived benefits when using recycled paper; 1 tonne of 100% recycled paper versus virgin paper on average; – Diverts 1.3 tonnes of waste paper from landfill – Uses 50% less energy in production – Saves 1.32 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide (CO 2) WRAP information sheet on this subject can be downloaded; www.wrap.org.uk/advocacyinformationsheets With carbon increasingly topical it is important to note that a major factor of carbon benefit is the assumption if not recycled the fibre may otherwise end up as landfill or incinerated. If landfilled, degrading paper produces methane; a greenhouse gas which is 23 times more powerful than CO2. What constitutes a recycled paper There is currently no official standard for what constitutes a recycled paper. The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), have published minimum recommendations that organisations should consider. In summary these are; Printing papers: Minimum 50% recycled content Copier/Office papers: Minimum 70% recycled content Tissue: Minimum 100% recycled content

For part-recycled products, the benefits should be calculated on a pro-rata basis.

Recycled content includes both post and preconsumer waste, as defined by the NAPM, but excludes mill broke. Mill broke, waste generated within the mill, has always been considered part of the normal furnish of the product. Business benefits of using recycled paper Increasingly organisations are interested in sustainability, their Corporate Responsibilities (CR) and generally reducing their environmental footprint. A “quick win” for many organisations can be implementing a paper procurement policy for recycled papers, with the associated environmental benefits they can claim. Importantly an organisation can make their key stakeholders, employees, customers and stakeholders aware of their commitment by; including this within their annual Corporate Responsibility report and using suitable iconography (logos) on their printed material. Marketing your commitment – Iconography There are a number of different logos which can be used to depict that the product is manufactured from recovered fibre (recycled). The most common in use are; The Mobius loop The percentage figure contained within the loop defines the level of recycled content. The NAPM loop The percentage figure contained within the loop defines the level of recycled content.

“Using recycled paper has enhanced the University’s image and commitment to environmental issues, with absolutely no detriment to quality.” Amy Clark – Marketing and Communications, Southampton Solent University Demand from Government and the wider public sector The government are committed to driving demand for recycled paper, thereby reducing landfill. In November 2003, the Government published the “Quick Wins” specification where all government departments should procure paper with a minimum recycled content. Carbon Balanced Paper. A new and simple way to reduce your carbon footprint. Global warming is a completely natural phenomenon. NASA never landed on the Moon. Paper is inherently bad for the environment. Some myths just won’t go away. Take paper. It’s biodegradable, recyclable and its raw material is renewable. More trees are planted in Europe than are harvested. The paper industry, a major user of renewable, low-carbon energy, is one of the most sustainable industries there is. And the massive rise in paper recycling in the last decade has been one of the biggest environmental success stories in the recovery and re-use of our waste. Now, Carbon Balanced Paper from Howard Smith nails the myth for good. It is paper for which the production and distribution has been carbon balanced, or offset, by the World Land Trust, on top of its other environmental and sustainability benefits. It is paper that will reduce your carbon footprint. And it is one of the most sustainable forms of communication available. So weigh it up. Stick with a myth or switch to Carbon Balanced Papers?

creators of colour

Why cut carbon? Carbon management is good for the planet and for business. Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives now dictate the esteem in which brands are held, and pro-low-carbon statements from business leaders such as the Copenhagen CommuniquĂŠ, which called for reductions in carbon emissions of 50-85% by 2050, indicate clearly the importance business now attaches to the issue. The low-carbon economy is on its way, and business is setting its sights on new targets. Today, a carbon reduction strategy is a competitive advantage. Tomorrow, it will be standard business practice. Using paper where the carbon impacts have been balanced by the World Land Trust will help your company meet and exceed your reduction targets. By using an on-product icon, a business can convey that success on all their printed material.

How carbon balancing works Carbon balancing is a form of carbon offsetting in which you can have total confidence. Our partner is the World Land Trust, an international conservation charity dedicated to saving threatened habitats and their biodiversity. Sir David Attenborough is among its Patrons, and its integrity and credibility provide customers using Carbon Balanced Paper with complete peace of mind. Carbon Balancing by the World Land Trust tackles climate change through projects that both offset carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and conserve biodiversity. Through land purchase of ecologically important standing forests under threat of clearance, carbon is locked that would otherwise be released. These protected forests are then able to continue absorbing carbon from the atmosphere. Referred to as REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation), this is now recognised as one of the most cost-effective and swiftest ways to arrest the rise in atmospheric CO2 and global warming effects. Howard Smith Paper has, with the World Land Trust, already protected more than 260 acres of threatened forest and natural habitat. If you want to do more, specify paper that’s been carbon balanced.

Paper: A powerful and sustainable form of communication Why paper? Why print? The printed page is a wonderful thing. Paper is a powerful and persuasive medium of communication. But it is also one of the world’s truly sustainable products. The companies that make it need thriving, growing forests. In Europe, the area of forest cover is increasing at a rate of 1.5 million football pitches every year. Respected certification schemes authenticate paper that uses sustainable forest source material.

Carbon Balancing is a superb initiative introduced by The Ink Shop to ensure that our clients are offered realistic, pro-active and sensible solutions for environmentally responsible printing. Ask your local Ink Shop Centre for further details of our Carbon Balancing initiative.
