synopsis BEGINNING IN 2020, THIS DESIGN SEEKS TO DEMO AND REDEVELOP AN EXISITING LAUNDROMAT AND PARKING LOT ON AN IRREGULAR SHAPE LOT. IN ORDER TO AVOID THE COST AND TIME IMPLICATIONS OF A RAZE PERMIT, THE PROPOSAL SEEKS TO KEEP 50% OF THE EXISTING EXTERIOR WALLS. THE LOT SHAPE WAS ONE OF THE MAIN CHALLENGES OUR DESIGN TEAM FACED, PARTICULARLY THE REAR YARD LOT LINE. THE SETBACK REQUIRED FROM THE REAR PUSHED OUR TEAM TO INTRODUCE A WIDER VARIETY OF UNITS TO MAXIMIZE THE NUMBER OF UNITS WITHIN THE BUILDING. **RENDERING ON PAGE 1 DONE BY MM VISUALIZATION STUDIO**

outdoor space WITH WIDESPREAD COVID-19 CASES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES, ONE OF THE MAIN GOALS OF THE DESIGN WAS TO ENSURE PRIVATE OUTDOOR SPACE FOR ALL 24 UNITS. ALL UNITS ARE PROVIDED A BALCONY, AREAWAY, OR PRIVE ROOF DECK. OCCUPANTS HAVE THE ADDITIONAL OPTION TO ENJOY THE AMENITY ROOF DECK ACCESSIBLE TO THE WHOLE BUILDING.

synopsis ALONG CARROLL STREET NW, A MIXED-USE CORRIDOR ENSURES RESIDENTS ALONG THAT CORRIDOR AND DWELLERS IN THE NEARBY LOW AND MODERATE DENSITY RESIDENTIAL ZONE HAVE CONVENIENT ACCESS TO GOODS AND SERVICES. ALONG THIS CORRIDOR BETWEEN THE TAKOMA PARK METRO AND THE MARYLAND-D.C. BORDER EXISTS A CONVENIENCE STORE TO BE RAZED WITH A NEW DEVELOPMENT TO TAKE ITS PLACE. AT THE START OF THE PROJECT, THE PROJECT TEAM AND THE NEIGHBORHOOD RESIDENTS PRIORITIZED PERFECTING THE TRANSITION FROM HIGH DENSITY TO LOW DENSITY BY WAY OF THE MASSING OF THE NEW DEVELOPMENT. ANOTHER ONE OF THESE STRATEGIES INCLUDED THE PROGRAMMING: A MIXED USE PODIUM CONSTRUCTION BUILDING WITH A PARKING GARAGE BELOW GRADE, RETAIL SPACES AT THE GROUND FLOOR, AND 36 RESIDENTIAL CONDOS ABOVE. **RENDERINGS ON PAGES 7-8 WERE A JOINT EFFORT BETWEEN BRYAN SAMUEL AND I**

cd set excerpts AT THE TIME I JOINED THE PROJECT TEAM, THE DESIGN DEVELOPMENT PHASE HAS BEEN MOSTLY COMPLETE. MY CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROJECT TOOK THE PROJECT THROUGH PERMIT AND A COMPILED CONSTRUCTION SET READY FOR CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN IN LATE 2021. DUE TO THE SIZE OF THIS PROJECT (8,400 SF), THE ASSORTMENT OF EXTERIOR MATERIALS, AND THE PROGRAMMATIC USES THAT REQUIRE DIFFERENT WALL TYPES, IT WAS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT FOR THE PERMIT SET TO BE CLEAR AND ORGANIZED. THE SET ACCOMPLISHED THIS THROUGH MATERIAL SAMPLE IMAGES, A WALL TYPE SCHEDULE WITH CLEAR LABELED LAYERS, WALL SECTIONS AT UNIQUE LOCATIONS, AND ENLARGED UNIT “TYPES” WITH THEIR OWN PLANS AND REFLECTED CEILING PLANS.

synopsis THE DESIGN CONSTRAINTS INCLUDED ACCOMMODATING A.D.A, KEEPING AN 8’ CORRIDOR EGRESS CLEARANCE, AND REQUIRED CONSTRUCTION TO BE BUILT-IN CASEWORK.
HIGH POINT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IS SITUATED IN PASADENA, MARYLAND. THE SCHOOL HAS BEEN RENOVATED AND MODERNIZED. ONE OF THE SCHEMATIC DESIGN CONCEPTS FOR THIS PROJECT FOCUSES ON A GRAND TREE NEAR THE PROPOSED FRONT ENTRANCE.
THE SOLUTION FEATURES TWO PLANES THAT BEGIN INDIVIDUALLY, MEET TO BECOME ONE, AND CONTINUE TO FLOW. CONSEQUENTLY, ALL STUDENTS, AND TEACHERS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SIT TOGETHER. IN ADDITION, IT OFFERS A SURFACE TO DISPLAY STUDENT ARTWORK TO A VISITOR WALKING THE HALL.
AT THE TIME I JOINED THE TEAM, THE PROJECT WAS IN THE CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENT PHASE. WHILE THE MAJORITY OF THE BUILDING HAD ALREADY BEEN DESIGNED, THE CORRIDOR PASSING ALONG THE GRAND TREE LACKED A POINT OF STASIS TO APPRECIATE THE OLD OAK.

paintings & murals ARTISTIC PROJECTS IN MY FREE TIME ALLOW ME TO PRACTICE MY DESIGN, MANUAL, AND TECHNICAL SKILLS WHILE EVOKING A MEDITATIVE MIND AND FEELINGS OF SATISFACTION. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN DRAWN TO PAINT, FROM ACRYLIC TO WATER COLOR (OPPOSITE PAGE). IN THE LAST HANDFUL OF YEARS I’VE EXPANDED FROM CANVASES TO WALLS. FOUR YEARS AGO, I BUILT A WALL IN MY APARTMENT IN ORDER TO CREATE AN ADDITIONAL BEDROOM. THE WALL WAS TO BE REMOVED BEFORE THE LEASE EXPIRED. THE BLANK CANVAS INSPIRED A WELCOMING STATEMENT PIECE AS SOMEONE ENTERED THE APARTMENT THAT DYNAMICALLY GUIDED THEM TO THE CORE OF THE APARTMENT. I USED MY SKILLS IN ILLUSTRATOR TO CREATE ITERATIONS OF THE WALL DESIGN AS
SEEN IN EXHIBITION 1. AFTERWARDS, I BOUGHT BLUE, PURPLE, AND WHITE WALL PAINT TO MIX THE COLORS I NEEDED. THE PROCESS AND FINAL PRODUCT CAN BE SEEN IN EXHIBITION 2. FOLLOWING THIS WALL PAINTING, I WAS ASKED TO PAINT A CENTERPIECE FOR A BABY BOY’S ROOM. THE HOME OWNERS KNEW THEY WANTED A TREE AND A LION WHEN THEY APPROACHED ME. FROM THERE I WAS I ABLE TO CREATE THE COMPOSITION, DECIDE THE PLACEMENT WITHIN THE ROOM, AND MIX THE PAINTS NECESSARY FROM A LIMITED PALETTE. THE FINAL PRODUCT AS SEEN IN EXHIBITION 3 SPANS TWO WALLS AND A CEILING. THE TREE AND LION ARE HAND SKETCHED AND PAINTED WHILE THE LEAVES ARE CREATED BY DABBING A SPONGE IN GREEN PAINT.

furniture refinishing ANOTHER OUTLET FOR MY DESIRE TO PAINT HAS BEEN FURNITURE REFINISHING. OVER THE LAST YEAR, I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO REFINISH TWO TABLES, ONE SIDE TABLE AND ONE DINING TABLE. THE SIDE TABLE WAS INHERITED AND DID NOT FULLY FIT THE AESTHETIC OF THE SURROUNDING FURNITURE. THIS TABLE REQUIRED TAKING OFF THE PREVIOUS PATTERN USING CITRISTRIP. IN ORDER TO FIT THE ART DECO/MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE, A HAND-CUT A STENCIL OUT OF POSTER BOARD USING AN EXACTO KNIFE WAS MADE. AFTER ENSURING THE STENCIL WAS FIRMLY IN PLACE ON THE TABLE, GOLD SPRAY PAINT WAS USED TO APPLY THE PATTERN. THE DINING TABLE WAS BOUGHT AT A MOVING SALE. THE FOLDING LEAF TABLE WAS PERFECT FOR THE SMALL APARTMENTS OF D.C., HOWEVER, THE BLACK PAINT ABSORBED THE POSITIVE ENERGY OF THE ROOM. IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THIS PROJECT, THE TABLE HAD TO SEPARATED PIECE BY PIECE, SANDED, PRIMED, AND PAINTED. THE LEGS WERE COLORED WITH A BLUE WOOD STAIN AND SANDED FOR A WEATHERED LOOK. THE TABLE TOP WAS PAINTED WITH A MATTE WHITE CHALK PAINT. THE FINAL PRODUCT IN PLACE BRIGHTENS UP THE ROOM WITH AN ASSORTMENT OF COLORS.
