OLD SALT OYSTER BAR, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! Scott McLaughlin, the owner of Cypress Cove Marina is also the owner of the Old Salt Oyster Bar restaurant, that features an oyster bar that could very well be North Carolina’s largest. Scott, John & Shari Crail and their team of many worked for over a year and half converting the historic “Ben Franklin Store” into this amazing establishment. Scott had envisioned a bar in the middle of his restaurant that would almost run the length of the room. That is 90 total feet of bar! They exposed the original brick walls, the original wood floors and dressed up the tin ceilings to create an amazing appeal. Mission accomplished!
the new restaurant at the same time and since we hadn’t seen each other for a while we decided to share a table and eat together. Her daughter Cody works there as a waitress as well. Shari Crail, the General Manager, came over to our table in an already packed room to welcome us and apologized in advance for any flaws that could possibly occur before the Grand Opening, which was scheduled for the next day. It was cool to watch how oysters were shucked table-side and of course behind the bar. I had ordered a grill plate that came with nice pieces of grilled tuna, steak, a skewer of shrimp and two side dishes. I choose grilled
asparagus and a baked potato with sour-cream. We can assure ya’ll that we both enjoyed our meals and each other’s company very much. Old Salt Oyster Bar offers oysters, seafood, steaks, chicken, pasta and salads and much more. www.oysterbarcolumbia.com www.facebook.com/OldSaltOysterBar 302 Main Street, Columbia, NC. (252) 394-9062
I drove into town looking around for a place to eat and found, to my surprise, that the door of the Old Salt Oyster Bar was already open for a test run. (Now OPEN!) Barbara Fleming (owner of BF Goodbrush, she created their logo) entered Scuppernong Gazette Spring Issue 2013

BOOK OF THE QUARTER BALANCING NATURE AND COMMERCE IN GATEWAY COMMUNITIES BY ED MCMAHON Increasing numbers of Americans are fleeing cities and suburbs for the small towns and open spaces that surround national and state parks, wildlife refuges, historic sites, and other public lands. With their scenic beauty and high quality of life, these "gateway communities" have become a magnet for those looking to escape the congestion and fast tempo of contemporary American society. Yet without savvy planning, gateway communities could easily meet the same fate as the suburban communities that were the promised land of an earlier generation. This volume can help prevent that from happening. Scuppernong Gazette Spring Issue 2013
The authors offer practical and proven lessons on how residents of gateway communities can protect their community's identity while stimulating a healthy economy and safeguarding nearby natural and historic resources. They describe economic development strategies, land-use planning processes, and conservation tools that communities from all over the
and development. Among the cities profiled are Boulder, Colorado; Townsend and Pittman Center Tennessee; Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; Tyrrell County, North Carolina; Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Sanibel Island, Florida; Calvert County, Maryland; Tuscon, Arizona; and Mount Desert Island, Maine. Balancing Nature and Commerce in Gateway Communities provides important lessons in how to preserve the character and integrity of communities and landscapes without sacrificing local economic well-being. It is an important resource for planners, developers, local officials, and concerned citizens working to retain the high quality of life and natural beauty of these cities and towns.

NATURAL EASTER EGG DYES (NaturalNews) Coloring boiled eggs has been a longtime Easter tradition. So has including plenty of milk chocolate and other sugar-laden candies. However, many of the food dyes commonly found on grocers shelves are synthesized from petroleum derivatives and even coal tar. This year, provide a healthier Easter for your children by making your own safe dyed eggs and opting for healthier substitutes for most or all of the candies. In addition, some food dyes based on natural ingredients may come from items you may not care to ingest. For example, the common red food coloring agent carminic acid comes from the dried, crushed bodies of pregnant scale insects. Plant-based dyes for coloring Easter eggs provide a syntheticScuppernong Gazette Spring Issue 2013
free and bug-free alternative, and their muted yet vibrant colors are far lovelier than their counterparts. Children seem to find that mashing food is also much more fun that simply dropping a tablet in a cup. As well, it is a great lesson in creativity and exploring which plant materials work in this way. Some materials work best when they are boiled with the eggs (as
You can use your favorite eggdying tricks here as well: Like crayons for a batik effect or rubber bands for a tie-dye effect. If you like a glossy egg, you can rub the dyed eggs with vegetable oil when they are dry. Some Homemade Dyes: Red - Red cabbage leaves (boil w/eggs) Yellow - Ground turmeric (boil w/eggs) Green - Spinach leaves (boil w/eggs) Orange - Yellow onion skins (boil w/ eggs) Pink - Beets, fresh or canned Cranberries or cranberry juice

Julie & Bryan “T ‘was about time” was what was written on Julia and Bryan’s wedding cake that her close friend Lisa had ordered. Julie and Bryan have been in love for a long time and when they announced that they would be finally making it official, just about everyone was excited and happy for them. About two dozen of the couple’s closest friends and family members came together on a mild Sunday afternoon last month at Julie & Brian’s home to witness them finally ‘tying the knot.’
Ty Fleming officiated the nuptials and it was a fine service! The bride wore a pretty off-white lace blouse with her beautiful long hair hanging down her back like a veil. The happy couple later left for a vacation in the Dominican Republic, while their little daughter Finley stayed with her aunt. We all wish the happy couple the very best!
