New mayoral committee set to elevate lives of Joburg’s residents

T

he 10 newly appointed Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) of the City of Johannesburg represented multi political parties, race, gender and a shared vision of improving the lives of Johannesburg residents, Executive Mayor Cllr Herman Mashaba said at a media conference recently. He said the new MMCs would, among promises made during the run-up to the August 3 local government elections, focus on addressing the high rate of unemployment, creation of equal opportunities, eradication of corruption, increased accountability and respect for the law. The new MMCs are Professor Rabelani Dagada (Finance), Dr Valencia Ntombi Khumalo (Shared and Corporate Services), William Still (Environment and Infrastructure Services), Dr Mpho Louisa Phalatse (Health and Social Development), Michael Sun (Public Safety), Nonhlanhla Sifumba (Community Development), Sharon Peetz (Economic Development), Richard Funzela Ngobeni (Development Planning), Mzobani Ntuli (Housing) and

Nonhlanhla Helen Makhuba (Transport). “These people were not chosen because they are close friends or deployed as payback or because they are cadres. These professionals were chosen for their ability to deliver to the people of Johannesburg, especially the underprivileged,” Mayor Mashaba said. “Voters need to be thanked for what they have done for this country. By calling for leadership that comprises coalitions, the voters have called for negotiations and engagement. The days of political abuse of society are over. This team is made up of doctors, a professor, community development activists and, above all, people with a deep love for this city and people with a passion for development. “These are people who want the best for this city. The sole consideration for these positions was their ability to deliver and their willingness to serve the people of Johannesburg, especially the underprivileged,” said Cllr Mashaba, who was celebrating his 57th birthday. “It is important for the people of Johannesburg to identify and connect with our team. It is important to remember that leadership is about how your ethical and moral leadership

affect the people you serve. It is about being a true public servant.” Prof Dagada, who has a PhD degree, is an author, associate professor, development economist and a policy fellow at the South African Institute for Race Relations. Dr Khumalo possesses a PhD degree in Health Professions Education and a Master’s degree in Somatology. She has been lecturing at the University of Johannesburg since 2008. Still is an Oxford University graduate with a Master’s degree in Philosophy. He served as the DA branch chairperson from 1987 to 1996. Dr Phalatse is a trained general practitioner,

while Public Safety MMC Sun is an attorney and former shadow minister. Sifumba is a former DA shadow MMC of Community Development and DA proportional representative councillor. MMC Peetz is a former Shadow MMC of Economic Development. Ntuli is an Inkatha Freedom Party member, while Makhuba is a former IFP Member of Parliament. Mayor Mashaba said he would soon engage the various city entities and departments to assess what is required.“In time we will announce a deliverable and practical solution on how the City will progress,” he added.

It is alleged that suspects robbed a 28-yearold male at Carr and Queen Elizabeth Street on the 16th of May 2016. It is further understood that the victim was on his way to Bree taxi rank to catch a taxi to work when he was confronted by three suspects, one of the suspects pointed a firearm at the man, while his accomplices searched him and took his belongings including R400 in cash. Having stripped their victim of his belongings, the criminals then ran off and jumped into a black Daihatsu, the victim managed to take the registration number of the vehicle as they sped off from the scene. After making a report, police followed the information and found the rightful owner of the vehicle who helped the police with their investigation.

ohannesburg central police arrested a 29-year-old male for impersonation at corner Noord and Twist Street on the 21st of August. It is alleged that the man who identified himself as a police officer stopped a couple and demanded to see their passports, after failing to produce valid documents the bogus cop then demanded money from the victims, after threatening to arrest them. The suspect showed the victims a fake appointment card with a pasted police emblem that was cello taped. At a distance, community patrollers managed to see the money exchange, they quickly approached the scene and demanded to know what was happening. Having realised that the man produced a fake Police ID, cops were contacted and managed to seize the fake appointment card as well as the victim’s money. Police investigation is under way and suspect will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court. Safety Tips To The Community To Expose Bogus Cops: In a statement issued by the police, the law enforcement is appealing to the community to be its eyes and ears in the fight against Bogus Cops who are damaging the image of the police. When stopped by an ununiformed cop: - On the appointment card/certificate make sure that you see his photo, police emblem, surname and that nothing is pasted on the card. - Ask to touch it to feel that it is genuine. - Real policeman will not ask for money. Johannesburg Property Company CEO Helen Botes speaks to delegates during the JPC’s Women’s Day celebrations at Indaba Hotel recently.

JPC reaffirms its women empowerment drive Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

W

e have set an ambitious target but I am confident that, if we truly believe in transformation, it is achievable,” Botes said during the JPC’s Women’s Day celebrations at Indaba Hotel in Fourways. The JPC’s target exceeds the national target by about 30 percentage points. “As the JPC we have set a goal to achieve 50-50 gender parity by 2030 and aim to position ourselves as the benchmark for women and youth transformation in the property development sector,” Botes said. She encouraged women and women-owned businesses in the sector to get involved and take advantage of available opportunities. She said in a bid to level the playing field in the multibillion-rand industry, the company had implemented several key gender transformative policies. “Our dedication as property transformation activists is a driving focus that will change the face of this male-dominated sector and create a new equitable playing field,” said Botes. The JPC’s gender parity policies mean that women and women-owned businesses will

have equal access to the facilities management budget that currently stands at R650-million, construction and building contracts, outdoor advertising, educational programmes, learnerships and the JPC graduate skills development programmes. Verusha Morgan, JPC’s Property Asset Management General Manager, said the entity was managing R34-billion worth of public-owned property in Johannesburg. She said this presented great opportunities for women entrepreneurs, especially in the wake of Johannesburg’s continued growth and development. “At the JPC, we live and breathe transformation and economic empowerment and believe that women are an untapped resource,” she said. ‘It is a fact that the demand for land will rise due to the growth of Johannesburg. Not only will the demand for land increase but so will the need for property-related services. This essentially means that the opportunities available are boundless for several sector-related businesses including quantity surveying, asset management, property management, facilities management, outdoor advertising and more,” said Morgan.

Self-driving taxi trials begun in Singapore

MOTORING

A

n American firm named nuTonomy is testing its autonomous motoring software and hardware systems in the relatively benign environment of Singapore. It’s an unprecedented event, and the guinea pigs are invited to take part with the offer of free travel, although it’s not as simple as walking outside and hailing one of the autonomous vehicles Customers can’t choose just anywhere for the taxis to pull up either; they have to end the journey by taxi at the designated point closest to their final destination. And of course they also have to walk to the same designated points for pickup. The trial is confined to a 4km² area on the west side of the city, and the company settled on Singapore for its testing due to the city’s relatively disciplined traffic flow and high dependency on taxis for getting around. Singapore has long been at the forefront of adopting new technology, a case in point being its willing participation in a forthcoming trial of a passenger-carrying drone by Airbus. While each vehicle nominally is selfguided, it’s not truly driverless as such, being minded by an employee ready to take over the driving duties in the event of an unforeseen incident. The employee is also there to check and assess data on the fly. Founded in 2013 by two MIT robotics experts, nuTonomy – with a regional office in Singapore – approached the Singaporean government a few months back for permission to run the trial. The testing is already in progress, with the taxis equipped with lasers, cameras and the proprietary software to guide the cars through traffic. — Online
