n off-duty Johannesburg metro policeman was murdered in Hillbrow. Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said the officer‚ from the recovery unit‚ was on foot when he was shot several times in the upper body. The incident took place at about 3pm. He was declared dead on the scene. One suspect was arrested in the basement in a
building near the crime scene in Claim Street. A second suspect remains at large and the murder weapon remains missing. Minnaar said the officer’s gun was the only thing stolen. Police spokesperson captain Kay Makhubele thanked BadBoyz Security for identifying where the suspect was hiding, whom they arrested. Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba said in a statement that two community members had helped track down the suspects after they had fled into a building. “Badboyz Security assisted police by
pointing out the suspects’ hiding place within the building. Unfortunately‚ one of them was injured in the process by unsafe glass within the building.” Mashaba believes that law enforcement in the city needs to be re-examined. “Our policing authorities are also hot on the heels of the other suspect who is believed to be in possession of the firearm,” says Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba. “This tragic and senseless loss comes after the city and our residents were forced to bid farewell to 3 brave fire-
fighters who lost their lives in the line of duty. “This latest attack on our JMPD officers is not only an attack on government but an attack on our efforts to return the rule of law in our city. It is an attack on our residents, who are desperate to feel safe in their homes, communities and streets. “We will not let unscrupulous criminals hold us to ransom. “The city is working with law enforcement authorities to ensure that no stone is left unturned in apprehending these
criminals. “I plead with any resident who may have information regarding this attack to please come forward. My heartfelt condolences to go the friends and family of our fallen officer. As we apprehend these criminals‚ justice must be done.” Johannesburg community safety MEC Michael Sun called the murder “totally unacceptable”. JMPD chief David Tembe said: “Our target is that if you shoot a law enforcement officer‚ within two hours they must be behind bars.”

Artist: Blanka Mazimela Title: Phezulu (Remixes) EP Label: Get Physical Music Release: 17th September 2018 Cat. No.: GPM469
lanka Mazimela’s ‘Phezulu’ has been one of the biggest recent tunes on Get Physical and now it gets a solo release with remixes from Aero Manyelo and Niko Schwind. Aero Manyelo’s excellent version was included on the label’s Most Wanted compilation in August and also on the artist’s own Body Language Vol 19 mix from April. Manyelo is a prominent artist in his native South Africa and has produced tunes that went on to get huge support from the likes of Dixon and Damian Lazarus. His version is an excellently enchanting one thanks to the thoughtful pianos and sensuous pads, the gentle percussion and soulful vocals. It’s a romantic track that will add real emotion to any set. The second remix from Niko Schwind finds the German Stil For Talent producer flip it into something more upbeat but just as classy and musical. Sweeping chords extend up to the heavens and the vocal is an intimate one, but the drums are bigger and the percussion has more drive to ensure a more immediate impact. The original is from Cape
Town’s Blanka Mazimela, another one of the excellent South African talents Get Physical have been showcasing in recent times. It is a warm track that oozes authentic South African house feelings, with great melodies draped over the slick drum work. These are three sophisticated house tracks that will continue to warm up dance floors well into winter. Tracklist: 1. Phezulu (Aero Manyelo Remix) 2. Phezulu (Niko Schwind Remix) 3. Phezulu Boston City Campus & Business College academic head office is in Stellenbosch, from where Mazimela adds “academic Head of Department”: to his list of daily tasks! While Mazimela encourages students to focus on career building qualifications, he also praises the launch of an additional Soul Candi short learning programme to introduce students to the industryy. The new programme is available at all branches nationwide, and is called the Introduction to Digital Music Composition and Production. Mazimela says this short learning programme was introduced to broaden access across all Boston branches. This programme adds to the existing repertoire which includes DJ101 (offered at selected Boston Branches), The Music Business (offered nationwide), and Digital Music Composition & Produc-
tion (offered at selected Boston Branches). What types of careers can you pursue with a qualification in the music industry? While you may need to combine or supplement a qualification such as DJ101 with, say, a business diploma, which would give you a greater edge in understanding the full running of a business, these are the types of careers that you could explore in the music industry: Performing & Writing Careers. DJ (Nightclub DJ). Recording Careers. Record Producer. Record Industry Careers. Music Business Careers. Personal Manager. Facility, Arena, & Club Careers. Concert Hall Manager. Film Music Careers. Composer. Music Journalism. “Programme directors spend a lot of time on their admin,” notes Mazimela. While the industry appears to be glamourous, there is still a great deal of admin work to be done such as returning emails and calls, dealing people, meetings with PR companies and more. Whatever direction you choose in music, Boston’s collaboration with Soul Candi will ensure you gain the industry skills you require to start your career in this really exciting and happening industry. Mazimela concludes with some words of motivation, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest. Always strive to become a product of value and the best version of yourself in anything that you do”
Jeppestown, Bez Valley and Maboneng are carjacking hotspots - MEC Malobane
C
rime stats suggests that if you are in Jeppestown, Bez Valley and Maboneng, that is where you are most likely to get carjacked and murdered. The majority of armed robberies and burglaries are the result of inside jobs. Commercial crime also increased in the province, as well as the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane says police struggle to trace criminals. “You will go to a crime scene and find positive fingerprints, but those positive fingerprints are not linked to anybody, which means most people who commit crimes are undocumented.” Speaking in Johannesburg on the
prevalence of retail crime‚ Nkosi-Malobane said workers dealing with cash needed to be profiled. “In 60% of criminal activities that happened‚ either the information is from the workers or they are the ones that committed that particular crime‚” she said. Nkosi-Malobane called for the vetting of private security firms and their employees. Lieutenant-General Sharon Japhta‚ the divisional commissioner of visible policing‚ declared war on criminals ahead of the festive season. “We have more resources available for the festive season. We have seen that criminals start shopping very early‚ at the beginning of October. Our festive season plan will start kicking in, in three phrases‚” she said.

Workers evacuated from nine unsafe buildings as government acts on the occupational health and safety concerns.
By Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za
T
he Gauteng Provincial Government has decided to evacuate nine buildings that were found to be non-compliant with the Occupational Health and Safety Act. A report presented to the Department of Infrastructure Development on 27 August 2018 revealed that nine buildings that were subjected to a conditional assessment did not meet the minimum Occupational Health and Safety standards. Premier David Makhura convened a special meeting of the Executive Council to discuss the issue of safety in the government buildings following an assessment report which found that government buildings did not meet minimum Occupational Health and Safety standards. The Executive Council formally approved the action to move staff from the affected buildings to allow for urgent work to make the buildings safer and comply with the OHS Act. The affected buildings are: 75 Fox Street, Corner House, SA Perm, Thusanong, ABSA Building, Sage Life, Bank of Lisbon, Old Reserve Bank and 30 Simmonds Street
The move to address occupational health and safety concerns does not mean government is shutting down. All Heads of Department have implemented disaster recovery plans to ensure that government operations and service delivery continue uninterrupted while urgent work is being undertaken to address Occupational Health and Safety concerns. Staff relocated from the affected buildings are being accommodated in various government premises including disaster recovery centres, regional offices and temporary rented office space. No staff have been given leave or sent home. The work being done on the buildings should be completed in two weeks in some of the buildings while others may require more time. Once all the work to address the defects identified in the assessment report is complete the Department of Labour will be called to inspect the buildings. The Executive Council expressed condolences to the families and friends of the fire fighters who died when they attended to the fire that broke out at the Bank of Lisbon on Wednesday 05 September 2018. The Executive Council also wishes a

speedy recovery to those the staff members and fire fighters who sustained injuries and are still receiving treatment. The Bank of Lisbon building is now in the hands of forensic investigators and the Johannesburg Emergency Services who are conducting investigations to determine the cause of the fire and the circumstances that
led to the death of fire fighters. The Executive Council keenly awaits the outcome of the investigations. The three departments that were accommodated in the Bank of Lisbon building will move into rented offices. The procurement process for office accommodation is being expedited. While the process of finding rented
office space is underway, the three departments are implementing disaster recovery plans to ensure that government operations continue and service delivery is not interrupted. While the conditional assessment was only done on the buildings that are owned by the government, the Executive Council is concerned about safety in all government offices, including the buildings that are being rented from private companies. The Department of Infrastructure Development has been instructed to meet with all private owners of buildings that are currently being rented by the Gauteng Provincial Government to ensure that they comply with the OHS Act. The Executive Council established a special committee made up of the MECs for Finance, Health, Education, Social Development, Infrastructure Development, and Humans Settlements and COGTA. The committee will assess the situation on a daily basis and make appropriate interventions to ensure continuation of government operations and uninterrupted service delivery.

Bushendich and Ande ready to challenge at FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN

ganda’s Mande Bushendich and Eritrea’s Filmon Ande have been added to the elite men’s field for the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN that will take place on National Heritage Day (Monday, 24 September 2018). Defending Champion, Thabang Mosiako is constantly improving in form and openly admits that he prefers hilly terrain to flat courses. “I am strong on the hills. I tend to do better on hilly courses than on flat courses. So it doesn’t matter that Elroy (Gelant), Namakoe (Nkhasi) or the two foreigners are running. I will be ready and hungry to defend my title,” said Mosiako. It is no surprise that the 23-year-old is confident. With virtually no weight to carry and slight of frame, he is the ideal

build for the type of course that will be waiting for the athletes. But Bushendich and Ande are confident too and should not be taken lightly. Bushendich has clocked a 29:00.19 for 10 000m in Kampala, Uganda – also at altitude. Telling though is his 9th place finish at the Africa Cross Country Championships in Algeria in March this year – one place and 3 seconds behind Ande. Still only 21, Bushendich is a diamond in the rough and could well be a tough nut to crack come 24 September. Ande may have finished ahead of Bushendich in Algeria, but had to settle for finishing behind him in Cape Town at the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN. Bushendich was 5th to Ande’s 8th with 11 seconds separating the two (35:55 to 34:06).
