he City of Johannesburg will be conducting an Expanded Social Package, residents who want to register and who meet the requirements should submit the following documents at the nearest Revenue Customer Service Centres: • Proof of income (SASSA) card AND the last 3 months’ bank statements or sworn affidavit confirming that you do not have a bank account and no other source of income; • Identity Document; • COJ rates and taxes account; • City Power pre-paid meter account number; • Eskom pre-paid electricity account number; and • Johannesburg Water account number (ITU number on the receipt). Residents of Slovo Park & Elias Motsoaledi in Soweto who have been waiting over 20 years to receive basic services, have electricity in their homes for the first time. Cllr Herman Mashaba said, “I made a promise to the people of Slovo Park that our government will bring electricity to their homes. I am proud that today, the City of Johannesburg could deliver on that promise.”

n Saturday July 14 at 13:00 the newly restored Newtown Heads and a colourful new art installation by the Imbali Visual Literacy Project will be revealed to the public at a festive launch on Mary Fitzgerald Square as part of the inaugural Newtown Now festival. The Newtown Heads, a public art installation of 560 carved wooden heads that sit on plinths across the Newtown Precinct, have become one of Newtown’s most iconic features over the last 17 years. In 2018 the City of Johannesburg’s Community Development Department of Arts, Culture and Heritage Directorate announced it would restore and repair these much-loved

public artworks, many of which have become severely damaged or destroyed over the years. Spearheading the refurbishment of the Newtown Heads is sculptor Americo Guambe who led the original team of artists who first created them in 2001. Made from old railway sleepers, each hand- carved head is unique, representing a sea of faces from across the African continent. Americo Guambe says of his Newtown Heads sculptures; “I wanted to show the people of Johannesburg that it is a city of many diverse cultures. And so the heads do that –

people of all races, genders, ages and cultures adorn the plinths around Newtown and the city.” The first stage of the refurbishment has seen the restoration and replacement of 196 heads around Mary Fitzgerald Square and along the pedestrianised walkway that connects the square to Helen Joseph Street. These heads will be joined by a new public art installation led by Imbali Visual Literacy Project that includes coloured flags which will be hung from the square’s lampposts and large screen-printed banners emblazoned with images of Newtown’s iconic buildings.

Newtown Now is a free festival that celebrates Newtown’s unique culture and heritage, at the heart of which is Newtown’s iconic public art installations. The one day festival on Saturday July 14 includes free walking tours, arts and heritage exhibitions, creative workshops, family events and a flea market. Participating venues and tour guides include: Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, the Worker’s Museum, The Market Theatre, Museum Africa, Market Photo Workshop, Stop Sign Art Gallery, 56 Pim Studio, Past Experiences, and the Newtown Junction Precinct.

suspected foreign national was caught on Monday at the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Public Safety’s Headquarters in Martindale allegedly trying to secure a position as an insourced security guard using a fraudulent South African Identity Document. The city has been embarking on what it has decscribed as a monumental project to in-source 4‚000 security guards who were previously outsourced to various security service providers. MMC for public safety Michael Sun said the alleged fraudster was suspected to be a foreign national pretending to be a beneficiary of the project.

“After investigation by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD)‚ officers assisting with the project arrested the suspect and took him to the Sophiatown SAPS for further prosecutions‚” Sun said. He added: “We have been carefully monitoring the people arriving for the insourced security positions and there have been several attempts by unscrupulous individuals trying to cheat the system in order to secure positions. “We will not tolerate such behaviour and the arrest of this fraudster is a stern warning to those trying to defraud the City and rob the rightful beneficiaries of their opportunities.” Sun said applicants would have to go through a two stage check system before presenting them-

selves at the interview desk which would eliminate the chances of fraud and impersonation. “The City is nearing the completion of the first stage of insourcing of 1‚600 security guards and the insourced security guards have already commenced with their work. “We will continue with the process and ensure this project is a success for the benefit of the residents of Johannesburg.”

Among them are actors, social activists, NGOs and various organisations. Prominent actor Sello Maake kaNcube revealed that he is supporting the event because of his staunch opposition to gender-based violence. “I would like to see men taking responsibility for their own actions in restoring and going back to dignity,” he said. Ncube said men must make sure they take responsibility when they are fathers. “If we don’t father our children, who will? We are not men because we can make babies. We are men be

Police Minister Bheki Cele joined hundreds of police cadets at the 100 Men March. Cele has admitted that the police sometimes do not act appropriately when domestic violence and gender abuse cases are reported. He said that not all police officers are rotten apples and that the cadets were brought to take part in the march to learn and appreciate the importance of working with communities. Representatives from churches and NGOs also attended the march.
