Finance tips 3

Managing debt as a new graduate Earning your first pay cheque after years of studying can be quite rewarding, but this is also a time to start charting a stable financial future.

Eunice Sibiya, Head of Consumer Education at FNB

“G

raduates who have just entered the job market this year will, for the first time, experience a drastic change in their finances. That’s simply because moving from a monthly allowance to a salary is a big shift in terms of cash flow, however it must be managed properly. Earning a salary is quite liberating but if not well managed it could lead to financial problems,” says Eunice Sibiya, Head of Consumer Education at FNB. Sibiya shares some of the most common factors that often lead to financial difficulties for

graduates: Not working on a budget: Good money management starts with knowing where and how your money is being spent so a monthly budget is important to ensure you track your monthly spending. Without a detailed budget plan, it’s difficult to track your spending patterns. Failure to plan can lead to you running out of money before pay day which can potentially result in you borrowing to survive until pay day. Peer pressure: following the latest trends, and trying to keep up with friends can be costly, because it often leads to a life you cannot afford which ultimately leads to financial strain. It’s better to be honest with yourself

about what you can and cannot afford. Never try to match up to how other people live their lives because everyone’s financial circumstances differ. Impulse purchases: not planning your purchases has a direct impact on your budget, therefore you should consider planning your purchases and avoid impulse buying so you do not buy goods that you don’t need. Avoiding impulse purchases will help you plan your purchases and save for the items that are really essential. Not having an emergency fund: an emergency fund is designed to cover shortfalls when an unexpected expense occurs such as a medical

emergency or car breaking down. Such expenses can have a huge impact on your finances and if you don’t plan for them you might end up having to tap into debt to cover the costs. Therefore, it is advisable to create an emergency fund with at least three to 6 months of your monthly income. “While it is understandable that moving from a monthly allowance to a salary will have a huge psychological shift in terms of your cash flow, it is important to be financially smart from the day you start working to be able to have a secure financial future. Have short, medium and long term financial goals and be disciplined,” concludes Sibiya.

City employees in mayoral clean-up drive By Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

S

porting overalls and other protective, casual clothing, hundreds of City of Joburg employees took to the streets to participate in the Citywide, mayoral clean-up campaign, #AreSebetseng recently. For two hours, City employees poured out in the streets of Braamfontein, Midrand, Soweto, Orange Farm, Randburg and other suburbs of the municipality to pick up litter; pulling down illegal advertisements, cleaning up manholes and illegal dumping spots, while ensuring no dirty site is left unturned. The campaign, which is spearheaded by the Executive Mayor, Cllr Herman Mashaba, is designed to encourage residents of the City to keep their surrounding areas clean. Mayor Mashaba started the #AreSebetseng clean-up campaign several months ago to rid the City of grime and attract investment. Addressing employees ahead of the cleanup, Mayor Mashaba said he was encouraged to

see a large turnout for such an important initiative. “I have bereavement in my family, but I thought I should join you for a short while to clean-up the suburbs around the Metro centre, as a sign of support. We need to keep encouraging members of the community to stop littering, that’s the only way we can win the war against crime and grime,” Mayor Mashaba said. City employees gave the monthly clean-up campaign a new twist, by electing to clean for two hours once a month. Several tons of rubbish was collected by City employees from the Joburg Property Company, Joburg Social Housing Company, Joburg Water, City Power, Joburg Development Agency, Pikitup, JMPD, Metrobus and Joburg Theatre. It was the first time since the campaign’s inception that City of Joburg employees participated in #AreSebetseng. The City Manager, Dr

Ndivho Lukhwareni, the MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Nico de Jager, the MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, Cllr Ntombi Khumalo and the portfolio head of Community Development, Cllr Nonny Sifumba, also took part in the employee driven initiative.

Dr Lukhwareni said City employees should not make the monthly #AreSebetseng a onceoff campaign. “This employee-driven campaign should be undertaken each month so we can ensure the environment we work in is clean, and that the entire City is clean as well, to enable us to attract investment other oppor-

Commuters injured in Kensington accident “I saw bodies being thrown out of the taxi as it rolled several times”- witness By Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

S

everal passengers were injured when a bakkie bumped into a commuter taxi, forcing the taxi to lose control and rolling several times, along Langerman Street in Kensington, Johannesburg, on Monday 12 February. The accident was caused by a Toyota Hilux bakkie, which lost control and rammed into the back of the taxi causing it to be jerked from its lane, into the air, landing and rolling on the road. According to eyewitnesses who spoke to the Inner-City Gazette at the scene of the accident, one lady described the accident as simply horrific. “I saw bodies being thrown out of the taxi as it rolled several times, honestly i have never seen such a thing in my life,” said the traumatised lady. A sombre scene prevailed as residents and motorists stopped at the scene of the accident to offer help to the affected

passengers. The taxi driver lay in agony, still wearing a shirt torn to shreds, stained in blood and seemingly wondering what went wrong. A nearby wall was struck by the bakkie as it veered off the road, after bumping the taxi. Both Vehicles were severely damaged. An oncoming vehicle which was being driven by a lady was hit on its right side by the taxi. “ I was driving up along the road, there was a bakkie and a taxi coming down on the opposite lane. I saw the bakkie lose control and hit the taxi from behind, as a result the taxi lost control and bumped my car on the right hand side. From there the taxi rolled,” said the lady who was in the car with her son at the time of the accident. Pointing at an innocent child seen clinging to her father’s arms, one witness described the little girl’s survival as a mere spectacle and miracle, saying the little girl was blessed to be alive after being thrown out of the flying taxi. T

he City is offering R100 000 to anyone who has substantive information about the shooting which transpired this morning, during which, one of our JMPD officers was shot in the head. Ensuring the safety of our officials, and especially our JMPD officers, is my number one priority. In the pursuit of keeping the residents of Johannesburg safe, I must first and foremost ensure my law enforcement officials are safe when conducting their work. This is why we are offering this reward, and by doing so, I someone will come forward with information which will lead to arrest of the suspect(s). MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Michael Sun,

Chief of JMPD, David Tembe, and Speaker of Council, Cllr Vasco Da Gama, visited Milpark Hospital to see the officer, along with his wife and brother. JMPD commended him for his bravery and thanked him for going beyond the call of duty to try and uphold the rule of law. The City is saddened and angered that this attack follows just a week after an EMS ambulance was assaulted with a brick while tending to a maternity emergency. It is also two weeks after two of our officers tragically died when a drunk driver drove into them while they were on duty at a road block. This criminal behaviour must be condemned in the strongest possible terms and this culture of lawlessness must end.

However, Hunt has since confirmed that the Bafana Bafana international has indeed signed, explaining the decision to bring in another central midfielder. “Yeah, Cole Alexander’s here. We’ve signed him,” Hunt says. “A few [central midfielders] are going, and a few have gone already, so we have to look at the long-term as well,” he explained. Wits parted ways with former Bafana skipper Steven Pienaar at the turn of the year, while Xola Mlambo completed a transfer to Orlando Pirates. Alexander faces competition with the likes of Thabang Monare, Granwald Scott, Edwin Gyimah, Ben Motshwari and Phumlani Ntshangase for a place in the team.

idvest Wits have secured the services of midfielder Cole Alexander on a free transfer, head coach Gavin Hunt has confirmed. Reports have been rife that Alexander had completed a move to Sturrock Park in the last week, but no official word had come from the club. The 28-year-old midfielder was released by SuperSport United last month, following an unsuccessful 18-month spell that was largely due to an assortment of injuries. The Clever Boys visit Golden Arrows in their next Absa Premiership encounter on Saturday afternoon, with kick-off set for 15h30.
