C
ity Power scooped the muchcoveted Power Utility of the Year at the Africa Utility Awards, which were held in Cape Town, South Africa. The Africa Utility Week is a leading annual power and water industry that attracts over 6000 attendees and 80 utilities from across the continent. The Power Utility of the Year award recognizes the power utility in Africa that excels in any one or more of the following fields: service delivery, project roll-out, technology roll-out, revenue protection measures, loss reduction, grid integration and new energy sources, including company contribution to sector growth, demonstrated expenditure reduction, increased capacity to deliver services and revenue collection, completion of infrastructure development or sustainable maintenance projects. City Power was vying for this much-sought award with a number of utilities from across the continent, namely Ghana Grid Company Limited, KenGen from Kenya, Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited and Volta River Authority
from Ghana. “We are pleased that once again the diligent work that has been done by the City Power team has been recognized and acknowledged. This award is an affirmation of the hard work that has been done by the City Power team, and this accolade galvanizes us to work harder to provide our customers with the superior service they deserve.” Says Sicelo Xulu, City Power Managing Director. “City Power has introduced a range of interventions aimed at curtailing power consumption and lessening the potential for load shedding in its area of supply in Johannesburg”, added Xulu These cutting-edge solutions include load limiting, a first solution of its kind to be implemented in South Africa that enables City Power to remotely disconnect households that uses electricity excessively when the grid is under pressure. Through its expansive network of smart meters across Johannesburg, City Power can remotely monitor household’s usage and request them to reduce consumption when the grid is constrained. In the event of non-compliance, the power is remotely disconnected. The power
will return at intervals, giving the household the opportunity to reduce consumption to the required levels. When the required threshold is not reached, the household is disconnected completely throughout the load shedding duration of four hours. City Power also developed a load limiting application, a free app that is compatible with Android and iOS operating systems, which, amongst others, alerts residents of load limiting schedules and allows them to disconnect power remotely. Through the implementation of load limiting, City Power has had to implement only 41 of the 220 requests from Eskom to shed load, thanks to the excess capacity created through load limiting. City Power was also recognized for introducing a solution called ripple control, which disconnects geysers during periods of constrained supply. This solution has gone a long way towards alleviating pressure on the national grid and freed up to 110 MW of electricity. Buoyed by the success of these interventions, City Power also rolled out technology called time of use, which is a dynamic tariff pricing system which prices electricity at a
premium during peak periods when the pressure on the grid is high and at discounted rates during off peak periods. Time of use seeks to encourage usage of electricity during off peak periods by incentivising customers. “The past three years have been both challenging and exciting - it was a golden era of accolades and recognition for sound leadership and innovation at City Power,” concluded Xulu.

ANCYL members pose for a photo with recipients of the sanitary wear
Keeping girls in school Staff reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za
T
he African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in Zone 12 visited Denvor Secondary School and Atlone girls High for donation of sanitary towels and providing puberty education as well as empowering the girl child to stay in School. “The campaign has a far great objective — by motivating the girls to have a dream and a plan for their future, their self-esteem is raised and they are in a better position to further their education. This campaign will help many girls from impoverished backgrounds. The onset of puberty
marks a sharp decline in school attendance and could even lead to them dropping out of school completely. One of the reasons for this high dropout rate is the lack of sanitary protection and lack of knowledge around puberty. “Because they are unable to afford sanitary protection and because they don’t understand what happening to their bodies, what should be a celebration of womanhood becomes a time of shame, embarrassment and stigmatisation with dire consequences for the girls education and consequently their future”, the ANCYL said.

Digital training kicks off T
he bridging of the digital divide in Johannesburg is continuing. The 2016 season of the Digital Ambassadors Programme – an R80-million digital training initiative run by the City of Johannesburg in partnership with Harambee Youth Empowerment Accelerator and the University of Johannesburg – has kicked off. More than two dozen youths gathered at the Klipfontein Multipurpose Centre in the City’s Region E on Wednesday May 11 for the launch of the second season of the programme. This was one of the first such gatherings to be held throughout the city over the next few days. Through the programme, the City recruits and trains unemployed matriculants in digital literacy and information technology. After the training the youths, armed with a tablet, go into communities to pass on their digital skills so that more and more Johannesburg residents can gain enough knowledge to access the internet and enjoy the benefits of broadband connectivity. The Digital Ambassadors each earn R50 for every member of the community they train. Speaking at the Klipfontein launch, the City’s Ephraim Pooe told the unemployed youth that this was one
opportunity they needed to grab with both their hands. “To every youth, this is one opportunity not worth missing,” he said. The initiative – championed by Executive Mayor Councillor Parks Tau – is run under Vulindlel’ eJozi, a City initiative aimed at breaking down barriers to youth employment. When he announced the programme during his State of the City Address in May 2015, Mayor Tau said the City knew and understood that with just a little help, Johannesburg youth could become its greatest asset. “This is why we are investing so much in the youth of this city. This is in line with our developmental local government approach to the implementation of the 2040 Growth and Development Strategy,” said Mayor Tau. The programme uses the called Maru a Jozi portal, an easy-to-use digital tool that enables one free access to a range of basic online services. Besides being provided with a tablet to train community members, digi-entrepreneurs will also be mentored in business acumen to enable them to use technology to create innovation for their own enterprises.

Joburg Water donates diapers
Joburg Water employees hand over donations

J
oburg Water, the City of Johannesburg’s water and sanitation provision entity, is donating more than one million diapers to the elderly throughout the city as part of its celebration of National Sanitation Week, which started on Monday May 16. National Sanitation Week is an annual event observed by the Department of Water and Sanitation and local government to encourage municipalities and communities to prioritise sanitation, health and hygiene. The campaign means that Joburg Water must reach as many people as possible within a short space of time – from Monday May 16 to Friday May 20 –
to make a donation. Several shopping malls have been approached to serve as drop-off points and Joburg Water has initiated a social media campaign through its #1millliondiapers4dignity to encourage residents to donate and help to enhance the dignity of the elderly. The diapers will be distributed via 11 old age homes throughout the city. Joburg Water Managing Director Lungile Dhlamini has called on Johannesburg residents to come on board. “We have already received support from various shopping malls to exhibit at their centres, create awareness and also serve as drop-off points for those community members wishing to support this initiative. Furthermore, we are going to use our offices and the social media, through our #1millliondiapers4dignity, to encourage people to donate,” Dhlamini said. The beneficiaries include the Andries Meyer Old Age Home in Eldorado Park; Frederic Place in Coronationville; Evalon House in Jeppestown; Nazareth House in Yeoville; and Tswelopele Frail Centre.

cCain South Africa spread some joy and showed just how much they care, by doing something special for the residents at Nazareth House in Yeoville, Johannesburg. They showed that it really is the little things that mean everything, by arranging a special surprise lunch for the elderly and children living at the home. 120 of the elderly and hospice residents were treated to a delicious lunch. The dining rooms were decorated in black, yellow and white balloons and lanterns which added flare, while yellow and white flowers decorated the tables. The delicious smell of roast chicken, McCain Veggie Sides creamed spinach, mashed butternut and mashed potato filled the air and the soulful sound of music created a fun and exciting atmosphere. McCain threw quite a party for the 40 children living at Nazareth House as well. The afternoon started off with a delicious chicken nugget and McCain Crispy Oven Chip lunch. This was followed by a string of fun and exciting activities. The kids each got to paint a special plate, which was decorated
