he City of Johannesburg’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) in Region 6 recently undertook a safety awareness campaign under the theme “Safe Streets and Transport For All” as part of citywide Transport Month activities. Region D CRUM Co-ordinator Nomvula Dlame and her team interacted with public transport drivers, passengers and residents at the Kliptown Taxi Rank and Maponya Mall in Soweto as well as nearby townships and informal settlements to raise awareness of public transport safety. Taxi drivers belonging to the Soweto Taxi Services were reminded about the importance of obeying the rules of the road, and fitness and roadworthiness of their vehicles, and the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding. When Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport Cllr Nonhlanhla Makhuba launched Transport Month recently, she said the City would champion a number of activities. She said it would focus on road safety, road conditions to support economic growth, the dangers of vandalism of road infrastructure and cable theft. South Africa has since 2005 observed October as Transport Month to raise awareness of the important role transport plays in the economy. Dlame said the campaign, which involves members of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and South African Police Service, was not a once-off initiative. She emphasised that the drivers should refrain from taking drugs and alcohol. He added that the City would also appeal to traffic officers to treat drivers with dignity and respect. Lesedi Mogweng of the Community Outreach Unit appealed to taxi drivers to obey road signs and traffic lights and stop texting while driving. He said fatigue was one of the main causes of accidents and advised drivers to pull aside when tired. He appealed to them to renew their drivers’ licences, discs and public drivers’ permits before they expired. Mogweng said the City would soon embark on advanced and defensive driving training for public transport sector drivers. STS Training Officer JM Sibeko urged drivers to be proactive, cautious and always put the passenger first.

t is alleged that a 41-year-old male was stabbed recently, over missing boots in his shack. The victim confronted the suspect’s brother who was wearing his boots that were stolen in his shack. Infuriated, the suspect came and grabbed the victim at once, then stabbed him once in the upper body. The victim then ran with his stab wound until he fell in the bushes. When paramedics arrived they certified him dead on the scene. Community members teamed up for a citizen’s arrest and handed the suspect to the police who then rescued him from an angry mob who decided to take the law into their own hands. He was taken away and will soon face the long arm of the law in the Johannesburg Magistrate Court.

he Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) has ambitious plans to transform forgotten underground tunnels in the inner CBD that connect to city hubs into walkways, shops and restaurants. The underground tunnels date back to the early 1930’s and were discovered during the city’s construction of the new Kazerne transport hub near Queen Elizabeth Bridge. The tunnels have historic significance with heritage value as it is believed that they pass through Constitutional Hill and were used to transport prisoners. The design plans for the tunnels are not finalised and a feasibility study still needs to be conducted, but the intention is to make the tunnels a connector between transport hubs and a destination. The tunnels might include shops, public spaces, green spaces, cycle-ways and public art exhibitions. An intensive public consultation process will also be undertaken with the relevant stakeholders. The project will be handled by Urbansoup Architects and Urban designers, as they are the ones who discovered the tunnels and approached JDA so that they could catalyse the rejuvenation of the inner city. Ray Harli, director at Urbansoup said: With crime increasingly affecting the city, Harli said: “strict urban management guidelines and security measures will be developed,” and “we fully understand that the success of the project hinges heavily on the

safety aspect he added. He said that highly advanced technologies will be employed to manage potential terrorist threats, criminal activities and will be properly sealed to address pest control concerns. The JDA will commission a feasibility study in the 2016/17 financial year into whether the project could become a reality. “While the JDA has had an impact on the shape of the city as a result of its focus on urban regeneration, experience has shown that urban regeneration projects with sustained incremental upgrading have a more sustainable impact,” said Douglas Cohen, executive manager for planning and strategy at JDA.

Beach in the inner - city

The scene taken from the Braam beach party in Newtown, recently

Melissa Bambie news@inner-city-gazette.co.za his past weekend was full of surprises for the residents of Newtown, when they witnessed their first beach party. On Saturday, the 8th of October, the events group “Until-Until”, hosted one of Joburgs finnest, creative parties for 2016, Braam beach party. Until-until also runs annual Parties such as Genesis all black. The event had headliners who are making waves in the music scene right now, such as AKA, Ricky rick, Stilo Magolide and the cities current favourite DJ’s, Tira, Ph, Capitol and many more. Although the weather wasn’t very friendly, and rained throughout most of the night, it did not stop the party from going on nor the people from having a good time. But the weather was not the only thing that was a potential threat to stopping the beach party, just last week, as the name suggests the party had been initially planned to be in Braamfontein, the heart of the student hub, but due to the previous event that happened a week beforeBraam beach party, which was Braam festival, the Beach party was moved to Mary Fitzgerald square, in Newtown. Although the shift in venue really upset people, it did not stop the people from attending the event. Seeing that the party mimicked an actual beach party, the dress code was beach wear. Despite the weather, the ladies were dressed in summer wear and beach throws while the gents in their colourful summer shorts and vests. The atmosphere described by one of the ladies that attended the beach party, was ‘Tropical’. “The event was lit, I actually felt as though I was on the shores of Durban,

Ricky rick and even though it was raining, it wasn’t cold, infact I think the rain made the event more exciting”, said Noluthando Mazibuko, who attended the event. “Salute to the events group ‘Until-Until’ for holding Joburg down, with the best party by far and bringing the beach to the city, the performing acts was really the highlight of my night. A well-done to them too for keeping the crowd entertained in the rain.” Sihle Sehlango, a happy and excited attendant said. According to the interviews, the events group Until-until outdid themselves, with a happy crowd and a successful event. Props to them. Now we wait for the next Until-Until event to see what creative angle they include in their parties this time.

Although the weather wasn’t very friendly, and rained throughout most of the night, it did not stop the party from going on nor the people from having a good time.

Indaba calls for unity to curb electricity theft “We should continue to send the message that there will be consequences for those who illegally use electricity Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za outh Africa loses R20-billion a year due to electricity theft compared with the R200-billion loss suffered by electricity utilities worldwide. This was revealed by electricity utility Eskom’s Dileep John during his address at the close of the 65th conference of the Convention of the Association of Municipal Electricity Utilities (AMEU) in Southern Africa at Emfuleni in the Vaal recently. The three-day convention attracted hundreds of delegates from across Southern Africa. They included representatives of the City of Johannesburg and other municipalities. The annual gathering brings together role players with the aim of finding new and innovative ways to generate, manage and distribute electricity to consumers. John said electricity theft was fuelled by the perception that thieves do not get caught. He said, however, that increased cooperation with municipalities was beginning to yield fruitful results. “We should continue to send the message that there will be consequences for those who illegally use electricity. We should not stop talking to our customers because any solution that we seek should include them,” said John. Other speakers said Eskom should include municipalities in its Operation Khanyisa campaigns if it wanted to change customer behaviour. Co-operation, skills transfer and funding were dominant features at the conference. Speakers highlight-

ed the poor funding of municipalities to meet their service delivery targets while having to confront the technological and skills gaps in the most important layer of government. Newly elected AMEU President and Head of the Electrical Department at Emfuleni Municipality Moferefere Tshabalala said municipalities must exchange ideas and each other to improve services. He told delegates that though challenges might differ in scale they were identical in most municipalities and it was important that co-operation was encouraged. “We need to realise the importance of working as a unit and tackling challenges that emanate in our spaces knowing that we can seek help and guidance from other municipalities. helps no one to work in silos and this conference has proven that there is a need to join forces,” Tshabalala said. The use of smart meters, the importance of which Local Government and Traditional Affairs Minister David van Rooyen emphasised on Monday when he opened the conference, was again a talking point, with delegates saying they were monitoring the City of Johannesburg on how it was rolling out the project. More than half of Johannesburg electricity meters are now smart meters and this move has led to a decrease in billing queries. Electricity service providers pledged to work together towards a common goal. Tshabalala promised to increase co-operation between municipalities and the private sector.
