City’s Madiba Day activities Every year since November 2009 after the United Nations declared July 18, Madiba’s birthday, as International Nelson Mandela Day, people all over the world have utilised 67 minutes of their time to honour Madiba

Johannesburg - On Saturday July 18, International Nelson Mandela Day, millions of people around the globe will devote 67 minutes of their time to humanitarian causes in honour of the work, struggle and sacrifices of South Africa’s greatest statesman, who died on December 5 2013 aged 95. The City of Joburg, led by Mayor Parks Tau, has lined up several events and activities to benefit the less privileged in tribute to South

Africa’s first democratically elected president, who would have turned 97 on Saturday. Every year since November 2009 after the United Nations declared July 18, Madiba’s birthday, as International Nelson Mandela Day, people all over the world have utilised 67 minutes of their time to honour Madiba. He devoted 67 years of his life to the service of humanity as a human rights lawyer, prisoner of conscience

and international peacemaker. This year the City of Joburg’s Mandela Day programme reaches its climax on Saturday when its departments, regions and municipal entities will host the majority of its activities to mark the occasion. Members of the Mayoral Committee, top city officials and representatives of partner organisations will lead several activities, from environmental cleanup drives, children’s games and storytelling

to maintenance work at an old age home and a cleaning blitz along a busy road. Mayor Tau, MMCs and top City officials will on Wednesday be at Thokoza Park, where Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo will host activities to promote the City’s green culture. Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo’s Noeleen Mattera said children from a local crèche would gather around the tree that Madiba planted in 2008. They will later release white balloons, light candles and celebrate his rich legacy. The City’s Citizen Relations and Urban Management (CRUM) staff

will mend and paint the fence, deliver two beds and heaters, and provide a TV set for the sick room. Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo has organised a trip to the Johannesburg Zoo for 60 senior citizens, according to Nomvula Dlame. Region F’s activities, to be held at the Drill Hall, start on Thursday and will include street cleanup campaigns, health checks and counselling, children’s games, storytelling and reading, according to CRUM Liaison Officer Zaabe Magwaza. Part of the eviction scene in Abel Road, Berea.

Hundreds of residents evicted

Berea - Over 300 families were evicted from The Ridge Hotel apartment building in Abel Street, Berea on Tuesday. The eviction followed a High Court judgement in a matter between residents and Tenitor Properties (Pty) Ltd. Honourable Judge Twala of the High

Court ruled that the residents were occupying The Ridge Hotel building unlawfully, and ordered their eviction. The occupants of the building were given until 10am on Tuesday to remove their belongings, after which the Red Ants eviction men would begin a

forceful eviction. During the eviction the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police (JMPD) said Abel Road and a part of Tudhope Avenue would remain closed until the debris that emanated from the eviction is cleared. That included broken bed frames, couches and picture

frames that were scattered among glass and shredded clothes in the street. Johannesburg Central Sheriff Mangaba would not comment on circumstances surrounding the eviction of the Berea residents, but confirmed that it had been ordered by the High Court.

Avoid fraud and register births early

Johannesburg - Issues such as applying for identity documents and birth certificates, as well as challenges regarding the late registration of births, came under sharp focus at a community engagement session hosted by the City of Johannesburg’s Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) Department at the Bertha Solomon Recreation Centre in Jeppestown, Region F, at the weekend. Matome “Ace” Malatsi, a Deputy Director-General at the Department of Home Affairs, was the main presenter at the meeting, attended by hundreds of residents from 11 of the region’s

wards. Malatsi was supposed to share the stage with officials from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), but they did not make it because of unforeseen circumstances. Malatsi told the gathering about the department’s drive to eliminate the late registration of births (LBR) by December 31. LBR is defined as any birth registered after 30 days. Possible reasons for late registrations include: Deferring the naming of a child because of cultural reasons; Mothers leaving healthcare facilities without registering the birth of their babies; Mothers having no proof of birth, such as a clinic or

hospital card, because they gave birth at home; Mothers who themselves are not in possession of an identity document; and cases in which both parents do not have any valid form of identification. Malatsi said this posed a serious security risk and exposed South Africa to possible fraudulent entries in the national population register. He said the department was seeking to close this security gap by encouraging citizens to register all births within 30 days. This, he said, would help build a secure, accurate and credible national population register with a single point of entry.

“We have been given a mandate to reach out to underprivileged communities so that by the end of 2015 all people, including unregistered individuals, are able to get access to the services they need,” Malatsi said. Local resident Nomsombuluko Maseko, 55, said was happy she attended the session, saying she had gained a lot of “useful and invaluable information” from it. According to Clr Mike Spadino-Pippa, chairman of the local Community Policing Forum (CPF) and of the local residents’ association, sessions such as this were important, especially in reaching out to the elderly.

Bulk of budget for

service delivery

Joburg Community Development MMC Chris Vondo

Johannesburg - Community Development MMC Chris Vondo says the City would spend the bulk of the R52billion budget for the current year on service delivery. MMC Vondo said the City signed service delivery performance agreements with the various municipal entities to fulfil its service delivery mandate and make Johannesburg a ‘world-class African city’. MMC Vondo said the City had adopted four pillars through which it would deliver its mandate: Jozi@

Work, Corridors of Freedom, Blue and Green Economy and Smart City initiative. “A large number of youths would soon be sent to the University of London to be trained in various aspects of information and communication technology. Johannesburg is a city with a predominantly young population. The City has taken the issue of youth unemployment very seriously, hence Mayor Parks Tau’s adoption of the Vulindlel’eJozi programme for empowerment of the youth,” he said.

Wits won’t fault ex-SRC leader Braamfontein - The legal office of Wits University has found that the institution cannot fault its former SRC president Mcebo Dlamini for expressing his admiration for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. “On the basis of existing case evidence, the legal office found that Dlamini’s utterances did not breach the exceptions to the Constitution regarding freedom of speech,” the institution said in a statement on Tuesday. “There are grounds for him to be charged for failing to meet his fiduciary requirements as SRC president. However, given the fact that he has already been removed from

this capacity, the university does not deem it appropriate to charge him in this regard,” it said. The university maintained that Dlamini’s remarks were ‘abhorrent’. The ousted SRC president had said that he believed that all white people had an element of Hitler in them. Wits said it was ‘embarrassed’ that one of its own could have made such comments. “However, given its commitment to freedom of speech as espoused in the Constitution, the university is committed to providing a space for the free exchange of ideas, whether or not it agrees with those ideas,” Ex-SRC leader Mcebo Dlamini the university’s statement said.

Police officers and community members on their way to the Yeoville koppie.

Cops raid koppie area Yeoville - Following a recent raid at the Yeoville koppie, Yeoville police communications officer Cst Thabo Malatji said they will continue raiding the area along Steward Street. “We have been receiving complaints about people being robbed while praying at the mountain. The suspects are said to flee down the hill and through the thick bush. Beyond the bushy area there are shacks, we want to confirm whether the robbers stay or just

run through the area,” he said. Cst Malatji said the suspects arrested during the raids so far have not been linked to any of the crimes reported by residents in the precinct. He said some of the residents living on the koppie are foreigners. “Some are from Zimbabwe and Lesotho and some are from different parts of South Africa. They build structures with twigs and plastic. The situation is not suitable for a human being to live in. If there is a fire, help will

not arrive quickly enough. Even if the people staying there need the police or any emergency help, they may receive it late due to the difficulty in reaching the area. There is no running water or sewage system. It is not a place to live in,” he said. Cst Malatji urged residents to be careful when using the mountain to pray. “We will continue monitoring and raiding the area but we advise residents to be careful when they are there,” he said.

Cop killing suspect dies Cst Mashakane adds that one of the suspects involved in the murder of a Cleveland police officer on Saturday has reportedly died in hospital. Warrant Officer Sibusiso Ndlovu and his colleague responded to a business robbery next to the Jeppe Hostel shortly after 5am when a shootout between the officers and the suspects ensued. Cst Mashakane said Warrant Officer Ndlovu and his colleague were patrolling in the Cleveland precinct together with officers from Jeppe SAPS when

the call of a business robbery in progress came through. “As they arrived, the suspects opened fire. Warrant Officer Ndlovu was hit twice on the neck; he was rushed to hospital where he was certified dead on arrival, the suspects managed to escape,” she said. A police task team was assigned to follow up the case. Cst Mashakane could however not confirm reports that one of the suspects, who was injured during the shootout and was taken to hospital, had died. A source close to the investigation said one suspect died and that more arrests are imminent. Man hijacked and robbed Cst Mashakane adds that a man was hijacked in Malvern and dumped at Cleveland train station on Thursday. “He parked his car in front of a restaurant on Jules Street, as he exited a man pointed a gun at him and ordered him back into the car. He forced him to drive to a field next to Cleveland station. Two other men arrived, assaulted him, stole his two cellphones, a wallet containing bank cards, an undisclosed amount of money and a laptop, then ordered him out of the car,” said Cst Mashakane.

Security man held for rape Staff Reporter news@inner-coty-gazette.co.za

O

n Monday Joburg Central police arrested a 33-year-old man for alleged rape, after he handed himself over to the police, Communications Officer Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele. He says the man, who works as a security guard, allegedly raped a 20year-old woman at a building at corner Fox and Kruis streets. “The victim was coming from a tavern at corner Fox and Eloff streets; and she relieved herself in the street. The security guard saw her relieving herself and threatened to arrest her for urinating in public. The victim begged for forgiveness and the security guard forced her to have sex with him to avoid arrest,” Warrant Officer Mbele says. He adds that on Sunday police also arrested two suspects aged 26 and 28 for common robbery at corner Simmonds and Bree streets. One of the suspects is a female. “It is alleged that suspects robbed a 29-year-old male and his girlfriend at corner Simmonds and Bree streets on. The victims were on their way to Bree taxi rank when they were surrounded by the suspects; they were robbed of their cellphones and wallets containing R600. The male victim saw a police patrol and alerted the officers. When the suspects saw police they ran away in

different directions. Two were apprehended and the other four are still at large with the belongings of the victims, investigation is under way.” Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele adds that a 35- year-old suspect has also been arrested for theft out of a motor vehicle at corner Bree and Quartz streets. “It is alleged that the suspect stole a bag with a laptop computer inside from a car that was parked there. The victim was about to park his vehicle when a man came to his window; he informed him that his tyre is flat. He came out to inspect it and found that there was nothing wrong. The same male opened the passenger door and took his bag with the laptop computer. Police in civilian clothes managed to arrest the suspect and a the laptop was recovered.” Safety tips to motorists Warrant Officer Mbele says they are investigating several cases where the same modus operandi was used in the commission of a crime. “We would like to sensitise the motorists not to listen to bystanders if they told them about their flat tyre. Their intention is to distract you so that they steal something from your car. It is advisable to check your tyre at the garage or go to the nearest police station. Working together the community and the police can eradicate the scourge of this crime.”

Police warn on Muslim veil ban N’Djamena, Chad - Police have warned that anyone found wearing the Muslim fullface veil would be arrested, after a Boko Haram suicide bombing killed 15 people. Saturday’s attack in a bustling market by a man disguised as a woman in a full-face veil also injured 80 people. “This attack just confirms that a ban on the full-face veil was justified,” police spokesperson Paul Manga said. “Anyone who does not obey the law will be arrested,” he warned. The bomber detonated his explosives belt when he was stopped for security checks at the entrance to the city’s main market. Muslim-majority Chad banned the fullface veil, ramped up security measures and bombed militant positions in Nigeria last month after the first ever Boko Haram attack in its capital. Security was tightened on

Sunday with police and soldiers deployed in all areas, including intersections, markets and mosques. Nine of the dead were women traders, and fear still permeated the market on Sunday. Boko Haram claimed responsibility on Twitter for the suicide bombing, signing off as “ISIS, West Africa province” - the militants’ self-styled moniker since pledging allegiance to the Islamic State militant group in March. Boko Haram’s deadly insurgency has killed at least 15 000 people since 2009 and left more than 1.5 million homeless. A four-nation military coalition of Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon has reportedly pushed out the Boko Haram militants from captured towns and villages in an operation that began in February this year. Government to expel UN diplomat Juba, South Sudan - A South Sudanese official says a United Nations diplomat based in the country’s northern Unity state will be expelled in a retaliatory move following the publication of a human rights report last month that accused government security forces of committing widespread attacks on civilians there. The deputy governor of South Sudan’s Unity State Mabek Lang Sunday told The Associated Press that the decision to expel Mary Cummins was made in a state cabinet

meeting. Cummins is head of the UN mission in Unity state. In May this year the South Sudan authorities expelled the United Nations humanitarian co-ordinator Toby Lanzer. South Sudan, which marked four years of independence last Thursday, has been plagued by violence since December 2013 as government troops battle rebels led by former deputy president Riek Machar. He was sacked by President Salva Kiir on a suspicion of planning to overthrow him.

Interior Minister John Magufuli

Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania - The ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party has anointed government minister John Magufuli as its candidate in the presidential elections in October this year. Magufuli, 55, currently minister of works, is widely expected to succeed President Jakaya Kikwete, who will be stepping down after his second and final term. “I am proud of our candidate; he is a very hard-working man and I am certain that he will be the best president,” Kikwete said after the nomination ballots were counted. “He is a no-nonsense man. We hope he will help the country to conquer poverty, and fight graft and indiscipline.” Presidential, parliamentary and local polls are scheduled for October 25 this year. The ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party has been in power since independence in 1964, and has two-thirds of the seats in parliament.

rebel leader

Kampala, Uganda - A Ugandan Islamist rebel leader accused of heading a group that has killed hundreds of people has been handed over to Uganda after being extradited from Tanzania, an army spokesperson has announced. Jamil Mukulu has been described as the leader of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an organisation accused of a string of attacks in western Uganda and the capital Kampala that killed 1 000 people between 1998 and 2000. “He’s waiting to face justice for his crimes,” Ugandan army military spokesperson Colonel Paddy Ankunda said, adding that Mukulu had arrived in Uganda on Friday. Mukulu, a Ugandan national, was arrested in Tanzania in late April and had said he would challenge extradition. He is also wanted in connection with fighting in neighbouring DR Congo and Uganda’s government has said his organisation is linked to Somalia’s al-Shabaab militants. Mukulu has been under UN sanctions since 2011, and rights groups say the ADF is responsible for executions, kidnappings, torture and rape and has profited from lucrative cross-border trade in timber and minerals in eastern DR Congo. The Congolese army launched a major operation against ADF last year, saying they had significantly weakened the group, leaving it with as few as 50 fighters. Reuters

he Orlando Pirates coach Eric Tinkler has explained Lennox striker Bacela’s exit from the club. Bacela’s future at Bucs was in doubt heading into the new season after he fell behind Kermit Erasmus and Lehlohonolo Majoro in the pecking order last term. With the emergence of Thamsanqa Gabuza and the arrival of Tendai Ndoro from Mpumalanga Black Aces, it seems Bacela became disillusioned with life at Pirates. However, the striker was given a lifeline when he started in the absence of Gabuza in the 1-0 away win to AC Leopards of Congo in June, only to be released by the club along with Khethowakhe Masuku last week. “Bacela needs to be playing every week, and there’s no guarantee for

him at Orlando Pirates,” Tinkler said. Ernest Fakude reports that the future of Lucky Lekgwathi at Orlando Pirates is set to be decided after the Kings Cup tournament in Swaziland this weekend. Lekgwathi, who struggled with injury last season, is set to be offered a new contract by the Buccaneers. According to source close to Pirates, the defender is still training with the club with the hope of meeting soon with Bucs chairman Irvin Khoza. “Lucky is part of the group doing pre-season with the club,” says the source close to the Bucs camp. Meanwhile Kaizer Chiefs is set to step into the 2015-16 season in an iconic new home kit that celebrates their 45th anniversary and heralds their illustrious history of winning the most league titles in South Africa.

As they embark on the defence of their premiership title, the team will wear a home jersey with broad gold and black stripes. The new design infuses the club’s legacy and spirit, reflecting almost half a century of prestige and success. A thin black ribbon is featured around the lightweight crew neck collar, which sets off the gold shoulders and sleeves. The team will have the option to wear the traditional Kaizer Chiefs black or gold home shorts, with gold socks completing the kit. The new Kaizer Chiefs home kit is available for pre-sale via the Nike Football App and kaizerchiefs.com from July 17, and on sale in official retailers from July 23. Chiefs Marketing Director Jessica Motaung said: “In partnership with Nike, we’ve created a new kit that en-

hances our image. Our supporters will look stylish and our players have a kit that has the best technological advantages. We urge all our supporters to go out and purchase an authentic jersey and make sure they are branded in gold and black stripes when they attend our matches at home and away.” Chiefs winger Siphiwe Tshabalala feels his new-look Amakhosi side have the making of a strong squad. The Glamour Boys have made a host of changes to the squad that were victorious in the League and MTN8 last season, yet the experienced winger is confident the team will adapt in order to be a competitive force once again this season. “Change is imminent and cannot be avoided. We have to do our best to combine the talents we have and build a strong team,” Tshabalala says.

Sprinter Carina Horn

Sprinter equals 25-year record Athletics Correspondent SA runner Carina Horn sprinted to a time of 11.06s in the 100 metres in Madrid, equalling Evette de Klerk’s 25-year-old SA record in the process. Horn finished third in the final of the World Challenge Meeting. This was also an historic performance because De Klerk and Geraldine Pillay (11.07s) are the only other local sprinters who were able to dip under 11.10s. Horn’s time of 11.06s is the fastest time run by a South African athlete at sea level. This means that the only SA sprint records that are still there are De Klerk’s 200m record of 22.06s (set in 1989) and Heide Seyerling’s 400m record 50.05s (set in 2000). Horn was however, slightly disappointed with her performance in the final. “The conditions were ideal but my legs were dead and I could not get them to go faster. But I am looking forward to the rest of the season.” Jaun Strydom, Horn’s former coach, said he never doubted that Horn was able to improve on or equal De Klerk’s record. When Horn left South Africa to train under the guidance of Rainer Schopf in Linz her best time in the 100m was 11.59s. She has since improved by 0.53s. “Carina is one of the most dedicated and driven athletes I know. She goes to the track at 8:30 in the morning and usually trains until about 16:30 in the afternoon,” the Tuks Athletics coach said. “Right from the start our goal was for her to run a time faster than 11.10s. Akani Simbine and Henricho Bruintjies had to break through the psychological 10 seconds barrier. Now that Carina has broken through the 11.10s barrier, I think she will not have any problems to regularly run times of 11.10s and faster.” Earlier this season while competing in European indoor meetings, Horn proved that she is in good form. Of the five races in which she competed she won two and finished second twice.
