City to curb inner-city building hijackings drivers now decide on which route to take for the day, leaving commuters stranded. The buses are also too old and are driven with their engines open, which presents a health and safety hazard.” Bellavista resident Louise Human backed Buthelezi on alleged the erratic Metrobus schedule and urged the City to invest in new buses. She also complained that locals were not benefiting from Jozi@Work as work packages were awarded to non-residents.

peaking at an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) consultation meeting at the Southern Suburbs Recreation Centre in Rosettenville recently, Region F Director Irene Mafune said crime, the hijacking of buildings and a lack of by-law enforcement were some of the biggest “weaknesses” in the City. She was responding to concerns by residents that building inspectors were not doing their job and by-law enforcement was lacking in Region F. The region consists of areas such as the Joburg CBD, Springfield, Turffontein, Jeppestown, Bezuidenhout Valley, Bellavista, Mulbarton, Rosettenville and Doornfontein. Mafune urged residents not to take the law into their own hands to settle disputes. She said the region had

enlisted the help of the Hawks, the elite crime-fighting unit, to investigate the hijacking of buildings in the inner city. She said, as a result of the partnership, there had been steady progress in returning hijacked buildings to their rightful owners. She told residents that some of the mega projects being undertaken in Region F included the R340-million upgrading and building of the Jack Mincer and Kazerne taxi ranks for local and long-distance commut-

ers, the South Hills mixed housing development project and a R72-million transitional housing project in Moffat View to cater for displaced families. Resident Andrew Barker urged the City to “seriously consider” splitting up the region because more resources were being poured into the inner city at the expense of outlying areas. He complained that the proposed rate increase was excessive and that the City needed to pay more attention to water supply

issues if it desired to be a worldclass African city. Ward 57 resident Mbongeni Dlazi said churches and taverns were mushrooming in the area because the City was failing to police by-law transgressions. “There’s illegal dumping everywhere. Churches and taverns operate freely. Who issued them with licences?” Another resident, Nkululeko Buthelezi, complained that Region F did not have enough clinics, halls and parks. “Metrobus

associate consultants have already been placed in various positions in the City’s Finance and Human Resources departments. Mayor Tau added that at least 250 companies had already signed up for similar partnerships. “We’re in for the long haul. We’ll ensure that the youth acquire the skills we need to truly become a world-class African city,” Mayor Tau said. “I’m very excited about this programme. It’s also about breaking down the inter-generational cycle of poverty and partnering with companies that want to see South Africa prosper”, he said.

A career in stock control

ou’d be amazed at the power that a stock controller wields. They are like magicians, pulling much needed but impossible to find items out of rows and rows of boxes that all look the same to me and you. It’s awesome how you can request one single item from a warehouse that houses thousands of items, and a stock controller will in his mind picture the row the which shelf and where on the shelf that exact item is! Although a stock controller and a warehouse manager are two different jobs, in some smaller operations, the warehouse manager is also likely to have a more ‘hands on’ approach where he or she will also be responsible for stock control and they may be involved in the likes of ‘picking and packing’ and in distribution. In larger operations, however, a warehouse manager is likely to oversee the receipt, storage, retrieval and dispatch of goods and will be responsible for the overall management and planning of the warehouse operation. These days stock controllers do not simply accept deliveries from the truck, count the boxes, and load them on shelves. It has become a sophisticated part of the retail process. Stock controllers

must use scanners and bar codes, be computer literate, and be able to learn the particular system in use at their company. Strict controls ensure that the company will always have enough stock on hand to deliver to customers, and will also be aware of seasonal changes where more or less stock will be needed. Stock must also

be protected, insured and tracked and counted. What will I do on a day-to-day basis? Stock controllers jobs are more confined to the stock itself within the warehouse. The work itself encompasses issues related to the control and maintenance of the stock and to supplying custom-

ers what they want and when they want it. Duties include: • Controlling the in-flow and outflow of the stock • Ensuring there are always adequate supplies available. • Receive deliveries and unpack appropriately • Inspect items • Watch for shrinkage and investigate where necessary • Identify and mark items • Capture on the system • Price the items correctly and mark with bar codes • Deal with orders coming in and fill them as appropriate • Take telephone calls from branches and deal with queries • Complete full inventory of existing stock, usually through running computerised reports. Special duties related to food stock control This is a more demanding aspect of stock control as perishable items require immediate handling, storage , capture and replacement. The life span of these items on the shelves is short, and items must be dated according to health and safety regulations. And of course, there are more complicated procedures such as moving produce to the front and replacing items from behind so that you do not

continually push existing items to the back, as you then run the risk of them being out of stock. Special tasks related to food and other perishable items. One of the most demanding areas of stock control is the food sector. This will include other areas where goods have a short life span. Dating goods received is of primary importance. The stock control officer or warehouse manager will also be responsible for maintaining appropriate temperature and humidity levels. Having obtained the appropriate qualifications further o the job training will be given as specific to the goods and industry. What type of person should I be? • Observant • Methodical • Organised • Happy to work regular 8-5 working hours • Can work as part of a team and take direction from others • Responsible • Energetic • Computer literate Promotion potential to Warehouse Manager An experienced stock controller can grow into a managerial position such as warehouse manager. A warehouse manager is responsible for delivering and fulfilling the objectives as set out by the head office. This could include processing orders and overseeing stock control and planning for future capacity requirements. A lot of warehouse and stock control work is automated and computerised and it I sthe stock controller’s job to ensure that they and all their staff are trained to carry out their specific duties. What qualifications will I need? Boston City Campus and Business College offers a qualification in stock control. This is a starting point in this industry. Learners wishing to increase their promotion potential should add value to their cv’s through additional skills such as computer skills, excel and excel advanced for example, and also consider a BCom in logistics.

Inner City learners get moving with 50-hour sports challenge

Children taking part in the Health of the Nation 50 Hour Sports Challenge

A

physically active life is the message behind the 2016 Ascendis Health of the Nation 50 Hour Sports Challenge, which will be taking place in Johannesburg from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 April, 2016 during Physical Education Month. The Inner City learners will compete in up to 15 different indoor and outdoor sport and recreational activities over the course of the three days. They are exposed to a huge variety of sports, including cricket, tennis, hockey, rounders, table tennis, netball,

soccer, rope skipping, ultimate frisbee, athletics and rugby. “Lifestyle habits are entrenched by the age of 12, which is why health and fitness habits must be established in childhood,” so says Brad Bing of youth sports development agency Sporting Chance, the organisers of the programme. “If you’re not playing sport or leading an active and healthy life by then, the chances are that sport and physical activity will not feature in your adult life,” he said.

“The Challenge faces head-on the reality that if South African kids don’t become more active, they will be facing shorter life expectancy and serious health problems,”says Bing. Now in its tenth year, the Ascendis Health of the Nation programme in partnership with the newly established Disney Healthy Happy Learning programme will educate 15 000 young learners from disadvantaged communities on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. The programme is three-phased: a sports challenge that aims to keep a ball in motion for 50 hours, followed by an educational road show with post follow-up school interventions thereafter. Physical education scores low in the school system Partnering with the City of Johannesburg, title sponsors Ascendis Health and media partners SAfm and SuperSport Let’s Play, Sporting Chance aims to inspire a lifelong passion for exercise and sport through the programme. School children taking part hail from various communities throughout Johannesburg, including Orange Farm, Soweto and the inner city. The 50-hour Challenge event will take place at the Southern Suburbs Sports and Recreation centre, in Rosettenville. Held in association with Sporting Chance, Ascendis Health and the City of Johannesburg, the 50-hour Challenge is the largest sporting event of its kind in the country. “Looking after one’s health begins in childhood, and as we all know, the best way to educate children is to make learning fun,” says Dr Karsten Wellner, CEO of Ascendis Health. Inner City schools or individuals wishing to participate in the Ascendis Health of the Nation 50 Hour Sports Challenge can contact Bradlyn at Sporting Chance on 021 683 7299, log on to www. sportingchance.co.za, follow @SportinChance on Twitter and facebook www.facebook.com/ sportingchance.

City honours struggle

T

he City of Johannesburg was abuzz with sports events honouring struggle icons. From the Jozi Freedom ride to the Gandhi walk - nation builders were remembered. People cycled for Nelson Madiba with a social message. “It is about uniting communities, making people aware and also to claim back the streets for our people so it is not about vehicles only anymore and we have a complete street policy where we making sure people can walk cycle,” says City of Johannesburg Transport Member of the Mayoral Committee, Christine Walters. The event has a dual purpose: to remember Madiba and to encourage the use of alternative transport. “I ride as a lifestyle choice, I ride to work to get in and around my neighbourhood it is just a healthy alternative,” says one of the participants. The 35 kilometre route which started at the Nelson Mandela Bridge went past Vilakazi Street in Soweto. The 31st annual Gandi walk honouring Ahmed Kathrada took place.
